Developing one project on Windows, Linux and Mac

Assuming that there is one JDeveloper workspace and a project...
Say there are three developers, each using a different O/S, but the same version of JDeveloper; can they all easily check-out and check-into a source repository (say: Subversion) without creating any issues with the other developers? Or are there JDeveloper settings that end up being O/S specific?

JDeveloper is a pure java application.
Almost anything that you do in Jdeveloper will be a pure java application.
As long as you stay away from absolute paths... (No "C:\Program Files\....." or "/home/user/....."), you should have no problems running JDev and any of its projects on any system Java is released on.
My desktop is Fedora Core 3, my co-workers use Gentoo and Windows XP. Our applications run on Windows 2K3 and RedHat EL 3. there were very few precautions that we had to take to get this great cross platform capibility.

  • School deployment with Windows, Linux and Mac Os

    Hi,
    we have a project with a school where they want to make a classroom with 20 imacs. The imacs will have 3 systems (Mac, Win and Linux) at the same time.
    They want the possibility to make something like the pc does with Rembo: When they need to format and reinstall the 20 imacs, do it over the network from a server.
    Is it possible on iMacs?
    Thank you very much for your help.

    I have no idea if Dell = best of PC (use to be IBM, DEC, HP, Compaq) but I hand build my own. And a Mac is never as good at Windows and has a number of shortcoming when it coems to running Windows natively.
    So I have to ask. Sometimes general purpose is the best of none and all the headaches.
    Paragon has tools to deploy and move OS from virtual to physical and back, and between hardware. There are enterprise editions and tools. Ideally you just boot off a server and get your own profile and image no matter where you are.
    OS X Server can run OS X Clients off VMs. And yes it would be nice to support any microcomputer or workstation or whatever. I am not the type to go for all in one anything iMac-ish. Give me a hard drive for each and don't try to mix Grub, MBR, GPT, NTFS along with HFS and EXT3.
    You do know that you are VERY limited in and pushing what falls in "supported" and what partition table will handle this, as well as keeping Windows booting on Mac.
    Boot Camp Assistant is not designed for such chores.

  • Firefox use of resources on Windows; Linux and Mac

    Firefox uses way too much resources on windows. This includes memory and cpu. I have done extensive research online. This is not an issue of extensions or profile. It seems to be a matter of javascript. If you turn it off then things get better but too many sites rely on javascript.
    What is needed is a fix not work arounds. Firefox needs to put a leash on javascript resource usage. It should run but only in the tab that is currently open and with easily adjustable limits. I don't want my machine to be handed over to some web site to run whatever they want on it. However I do want to be able to access legitimate features that require javascript. There are many sites who do not seem to respect the difference. Therefore it fall on the browser to decide it for them. Maybe we need a sort of built in noscript.

    Unless you have a 100% reproducible test case that meets the following criteria, engineers can't fix it (Engineers need to know where to look before they can fix a problem)
    * Latest version of Firefox (the latest nightly build is best)
    * Most updated OS
    * Updated graphics drivers
    * A system free of malware
    * Update plugins (your plugins are horrible out of date FYI)
    * A fresh profile
    * A testcase and steps to reproduce so that anyone at any time can make the exact same issue happen on any similar machine
    All of these things can negatively affect resource usage, and unless you have these, there is no actionable bug to be fixed. Once you have all these, file a bug with clear Steps to reproduce.
    If you are developer you know that just someone coming and saying "Your program sucks and uses all the things!" isn't a useful bug report (unless your program is literally 200 lines of code). For something as large and complex as Firefox, we need to know where to look in order to fix something. Is it a bug that happens when a specific Javascript function is called? Then that's in one area of the code. Is it a bug when an image of X size is in a webpage? That's in another area of the code. All of this information is vital and if you really are as experienced of a software developer as you say you are you would understand that, and if you really do want to help you should have no problem providing this information.

  • Can Java program written on Windows platfrom run in Linux and Mac?

    Hi
    I am currently building a java applet in windows platform. I am wondering whether this program can be run on other platforms (Linux and Mac Os), Because the requirement of this program is to be able to run on three different platfrom (windows, linux and Mac os). Really appreciate if someone can help me
    Thank

    I can say with a high degree of certaintly that the answer is probably. Thats about 90% probably, which is a lot better than you will get with anything else. You may need to be careful of fonts and such, but GFI

  • Same code will run on windows xP and mac x

    we have to develop the application for windows XP and mac X. so the codes written in windows platform will run at mac X with same performance ? plz suggest me..
    thanx
    vipin

    Same performance? Too many variables to say.
    It depends on the computer processor, amount of memory etc etc, let along the differences in the implementation of the java virtual machine on different platforms.
    I doubt you will find anyone that can give you a straight answer.

  • Web Start doesn't leave the gate on Linux and Mac

    I am evaluating Java Web Start to decide whether to recommend it as part of a government grant proposal. My initial impression of Web Start has been a sorry one. When I go to
    http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/demos.html
    and click on one of the demos, I am redirected to the page
    http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/needdownload.html
    which tells me that I need to download Java Web Start ("a one-time process"). Fine, I click on the download link, and instead of a download, what I get is a bug-report page:
    http://java.sun.com/webapps/bugreport
    I have seen this behavior on both Linux and Mac OS X. (My Windows machine already had Web Start installed from several months ago; I don't know if this reflects a superior Windows support relative to Linux or Mac OS X support, or a better download software several months ago.)
    This is a terrible first impression for one's software. Given these beginnings, any sane developer would run away as fast as possible from the Web Start technology. Clearly a lot of work has gone into Web Start, and to see squandered like this is surprising.
    Our software's user base (research biologists) has large Macintosh and Linux constituencies. My experience with Web Start suggests that Web Start would be a disastrous choice for us. I hope there is a simple way around these obstacles.
    Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

    I haven't tested JWS before JRE 1.4 so I can't recommend you anything if you require JRE 1.3 or before, but if you can install JRE 1.4, specially JRE 1.4.2 or after, JWS works very good on Linux and Windows. In both platforms I use deploy applications using JWS and they all work very good. I have no experience on Mac OS X.
    Both platforms obviously require Java preinstalled. Also there is some ways to install Java automatically, this is something that must be done by an administrator as every other software that requieres installation and configuration on every PC. After that step, everything is very simple.
    On Linux if you click on a .jnlp file for the first time, at least mozilla ask if you want to save the file or open it, you can select the javaws executable inside your java installation as the program to open this file, mark that that's the action you always want to do with that kind of files, and that's all. Also you can manually register .jnlp files and application/x-java-jnlp-file mime tipe as handled by javaws as the last part of the java installation and this first step will not be necesary.
    On Windows the installer automatically register itself as insterested in handling jnlp files, so the previous step for linux is not required.
    Hope this helps.

  • Native Process Concerns on Linux and MAC

    I  have created an AIR application that has a feature to take screenshot  of the screen. I have used "senthil.jar" to support screenshot capture.

    Native Process is created and used. I have also created native installers like -
    exe for windows
    dmg for MAC
    rpm for linux
    on  windows everything works fine.But on linux and MAC one NativeProcess  event is dispatched i.e. Event.ACTIVITY. No other event is dispatched.

    I haven't tested JWS before JRE 1.4 so I can't recommend you anything if you require JRE 1.3 or before, but if you can install JRE 1.4, specially JRE 1.4.2 or after, JWS works very good on Linux and Windows. • MacBook Air dual system with Windows crashed, and Mac password forgotten

    The MacBook Air of my friend encountered a few big problems.  Here is the story:
    1. There are two operating systems in it: Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6.  She used Windows 7 exclusively (which is the reason for the 5th problem below).  This may already seem awkward from the start, but please don't blame her for this..
    2. Today somehow the Windows 7 cannot boot (the classical "blue screen" appeared), probably due to an error in the updating process.
    3. So now we have to log into the Mac OS to do some operation on the Windows system, either to back up the data, or to edit the Windows disk somehow to repair it.
    4. In order to do this, we need to install some third party tools in Mac OS (to have access to the NTFS file system; BTW, the Windows partition cannot be mounted by the "disk utility" tool due to some errors), and here is where another big problem comes about:
    5. She has forgotten the password of the Mac OS system (be assured: this MacBook Air is not a stolen one), so practically we cannot install any new software, or run tools that requires a high privilege!
    6. Well, by Googling I found that the password might be circumvented by using a recovery usb stick, by she cannot find out this usb stick...
    7. Some articles mentioned pressing "command + R" or "command + S" during booting to enter a command line environment (I am not sure about this), which had no effect at all in our case.
    By now I have no solid idea how could such a situation be solved...  The possibilities I can think of are:
    a. Take the laptop to an Apple repair center.
    b. Try to make a recovery disk by myself, and use it to get rid of the password.
    c. Try to boot the computer with an external disk (somehow made), and then edit or backup the Windows partition.
    I am not sure any of them will work.
    Any ideas will be appreciated!

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    If your friend has got a Late 2010 MacBook Air, the Mac came with a USB drive that contains Mac OS X Snow Leopard, to reset passwords, reinstall Mac OS X...
    If he/she has got an older MacBook Air, he/she has got DVDs instead, and you need an external optical drive or a PC to be able to reset the password. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2129?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US After starting with the DVD, open Utilities menu > Password Reset, and follow the steps
    If he/she lost the USB drive or DVDs, call Apple to get replacement DVDs or another USB drive > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

  • USB compatible with Windows 7 and Mac OS X

    Hi everyone.
    I bought myself today a Datatraveler 32GB usb stick from Kingston. I do some computer fixing in my spare time.
    I want to put my personal tools on this stick. So when I go to people who have Windows I take the usb stick with me and I have all my tools on it. On the other side, when I go to people with a Mac, the usb stick has to be compatible with that too. So I thought, when I make 2 partitions on it and I format the first one with Mac OS X extented and the second with NTFS, then I got a usb stick that is compatible with both OSes. But when I format this in Disk Utility my Windows PC doesn't recognize the stick as compatible.

    Hi Joel,
    just as an idea: why not use FAT32 as file system ?
    It's compatible with both Windows 7 and Mac OSX.
    For your immenent problem:
    You have to use MBR (Master Boot Record) as partition scheme on the stick, then Windows 7 can format its partition with NTFS and OSX can format with MacOS Extended (Journaled) on its designated partition.
    Be aware of some stories that using MacOS Extended file system on an MBR partitioned drive/stick might lead to 'deteriorating' problems later on.
    Personally I use FAT32 for my USB-Sticks without any problems going back and forth between Windows and Mac OSX.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Lenovo Wireless Headset W770 compatibility with Linux and Mac

    Hi,
    Can someone provide me information on Lenovo Wireless Headset W770 compatibility with Linux and Mac distributions.  On the product overview page under Software Requirements, only Windows is mentioned.  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?submit=true&componentID=1343112653906&DocID=PD...
    Please let me know if the headset can work with other distributions as well.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Keya
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I just received W770 and tried it on a PC and it worked. But when I plug the USB receiver in a macbook air (2011 MAC OS 10.6.8), it didn't work. The message I got is that MAC can't recognize the "keyboard" and asked me to press the shift button on the unrecognized keyboard- which I guess meant that the MAC treated the USB dongle as if it were a wireless keyboard of some sort. Anyway, would appreciate it if you could let me know how to make it work on MAC. The previous statement saying that it would work on any Lenovo machine regardless of OS is kinda of unclear - do you mean that it would also work on lenovo running MAC OS (is there any Lenovo running Mac OS?). Thanks.

  • Anyway to dual boot either Linux and Mac OS X?

    Is there a way to dual boot Ubuntu and Mac OS X similar to Boot Camp?

    Here's where you start.
    As an alternative you can purchase either Parallels Desktop for Mac or VM Fusion which provide virtual machines in which you can run various operating systems concurrently with OS X. Both products run various versions of Windows, Linux, and Unix.

  • If I use an SD card for both Windows 7 and Mac, is there any way to see the documents from the Mac sight while on the windows side?

    If I use an SD Card on both the windows 7 and Mac OS (using bootcamp), is there any way to see the data seen on the Mac OS side while using the Windows OS?

    Windows Aero style uses a different background image than Mac:
    Windows Aero:
    #nav-bar {
    background-image: linear-gradient(rgba(253,253,253,0.45), rgba(255,255,255,0));
    Mac:
    #nav-bar {
    background: url(chrome://browser/skin/Toolbar-background-noise.png),
    linear-gradient(hsl(0,0%,93%), hsl(0,0%,83%));
    I can't test hands on, but you might be able to clear that OSX "fog" using a rule such as:
    @namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
    #nav-bar, #PersonalToolbar {
    background-image: none !important;
    background-color: transparent !important;
    This could be applied using the Stylish extension or by creating/editing a userChrome.css file.

    yes you need the updates and patches.
    Only some of the drivers that Windows will automatically install at times
    and always make sure to insure it is using restore points
    do all the maintenance andsuch as normal
    use MS Security Essentials for AV is really top notch
    Clean disk space
    Use WinClone new program to inisure you have a restore image

    lower your font size unless you have difficulty
    MS Security Essentials is excellent
    Then again maybe time to investigate Windows 8 RP (which uses Defender)
