Developing Queries in Production

My client insist on developing and testing queries in their production system. The were told that this was the best option. I disagree.
I come from an R/3 background and have never heard of such a thing. Their reasoning is that the transports never worked.
Can someone help me with some additional reasons why this should not be allowed other than the obvious.
Thanks

I have been an advocate of permitting creation of Adhoc queries in production. We all must keep in mind that R3 is a transactional system whereas BW is a data warehouse.
What is the use of a data warehouse if you cannot obtain Adhoc reports, as the name implies, in production, on the fly, without going through an IT QA and transport process. Most of the improvements occur with Super Users and functional administrators improving the processes and queries to fit the needs of the users. How would a super user see changed conditional and exception reporting, if he does not have access to do it?
That said, the best practices I have seen include a routine process to eliminate / delete very old redundant queries created by users in Production. The organization does need trained users to do such an activity. All critical and significant queries should get duplicated and transported through Development, and not be changed in Production environment. Only such queries should get placed in roles. Access to infoareas should be limited to Super users. Global structures should be used and available to be modified after they are copied using save as function.
I am aware of the down sides on maintainance and performance, when you permit such a process. Still, the benefits are much more to an enterprise, to ignore such an option.

  • Transport of queries from production to developement

    Hello BI Community,
We allow ad-hoc query development in our production system. Yet certain queries are critical and must be "certified" so that they cannot be overwritten in an ad-hoc manner.
The method for certifying a query is to transport it from the development system, and once done the only way to change this query is to move another transport.
As more and more sophisticated queries need to be certified, it is becoming difficult to re-create those queries in the development system for the certification process.
Does anybody have experience or recommendations around moving a query that was originally created in the production system BACKWARDS to the development system ? Then it would be easy to move forward again via transport for certification.
    Thank you !
    Kiran

    Hi Kiran,
    1. Open production system
    2. Create transport (1) in Prod, add queries, process chains, etc.
    3. Create new transport (2) in Prod (in SE01) of type "Transport of Copies"
    4. Enter your target system on this screen (choose your Dev system here!)
    5. Include objects from transport 1 into transport 2
    6. Release transport 2 to go to Dev
    7. Delete transport 1 from Prod. This release locks on the objects.
    8. Close Prod
    8. Import transport 2 into Dev system
    OR
The reverse transport is usually not setup , what you could do is :
    1. As BASIS to set up the connection
    2. Copy the transport object into file and then import it manually into Development

  • Queries in Production for Business Users

    Hello fellow SAP Security Colleagues,
I am familiar with some of the obvious reasons why query development and execution should be restricted in production and have generally agreed with the restrictions.
However, I wanted to reach out to those of you who have supported a project which either:
A.) allowed business users to create and execute queries in production  /or/
B.) allowed queries to be developed and transported to production for use by business users.
I would like more information on how this is working out for your company and what steps you are taking to make it work securely and with little performance issues.
Thank you so much for your feedback!

    Hi Teresa,
I agree with Julius and Auke, but have a fair amount of experience of working with companies who disagree....
At my current client we have a small project taking place to rationalise the use of queries.
Until recently almost all users had the access to create and change queries in the production environment.  There are approximately 3000 queries and 1500 infosets used, created, 50% of which are used over the previous 12 months.  The result of this is that many reporting controls are bypassed and there are many "versions of the truth".
For legal reasons we now need to secure the data.  This also requires robust change control over the queries.  The existing queries were transported into the development environment and access to maintain queries has been removed in Prod.
All new queries are created by a functional expert and then handed over to the development team.  The dev team review the query (make sure that it is reasonably efficient etc) and then put in auth checks into the infoset.  This is then tested and only when signed off, is transported into the Prod.
It's not an ideal situation but until most of the reporting has been moved to BI, is reasonably controlled.  What it rarely addresses is the need for consistent reporting.

  • Transportation of Work books from BW Development to BW Production

    Hi,
I have Transported 0FIGL_C01 InfoCube from BW Development to BW Production and have loaded Data also.
with the cube Queries have also come in the BW Production..
But i did not get workbooks in BW Production?
How to bring work books into BW Production?
Please tell me step by step procedure
    Help will be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks in advance...
    This is ver urgent...

    Hi
Unlike Queries, usually workbooks are saevd either under a role or under Favourites.  So if you have saved the your workbooks under a role, you need to have that role assigned to you to view the workbooks. The roles and profiles might be quite different in dev and QA because of authorisations, so look into them carefully. If the developer saves the workbook as a favorite can you still transport it and see it? After transporting the workbooks you will need to retransport the roles they are assigned to. Once the roles are transported after the Workbook transport ..all the workbooks are visible.. The  rule is to transport the roles only once and never after, else all workbooks contained in that role in the target system will be wiped out.
Just for safety sake, it is a good idea to maintain all the workbooks on a secure location, so that in case they are wiped out, you can use these to re-establish them. We create our workbooks directly in production. You can also confirm this by going to RSA1 -> Transport Connnection -> Click on Object Types -> Expand Query Elements -> Query -> double click Select Objects -> Search by your query Technical name -> Transfer. Once you get ur Query and all its object in the righmost box, under Transport request column you should see the Request number that you have created for all the query elements you have changed. If this is not the case then you assign it by checking the transport box for the query and Transport button

  • How to port database changes from development to a production environment

How do I port database changes from the development to the production environment?
I am using v8 and have always had to redo everything using the schema manager all over in the production environment. Is there an easy way to generate a script, for example to dump the database changes on the development machine to be executed later on the production machine?

This should already be a clearly defined change control process. Once a procedure, function, package, trigger, or whatever completes the testing rounds, it should be promoted to production.
Forgive me if it seems I'm trivializing, but I don't see the problem, just copy the object(s) from your software library (or development) into production using whatever tool works best or has been chosen. If you are doing data copies then you have various options again including good old export/import.

I know c,c++ and java language ! and i want to contribute for development of mozilla products ! any idea where i can find beginner level projects ! so that i can hone some real development skills too :)

You could also try jumping in on some of the Mozilla IRC chat channels as was suggested to someone else in another thread.
Also you could also try the [/forums/buddies new contributors forum], it does now have an Admin monitoring and replying. (At the time of the quoted post Admins were almost impossible to get hold of for forum matters )

I know just the places where I think you'd fit in best. To make sure, just join us in #sumodev and #mozwebqa and #communityit at irc://irc.mozilla.org
I think your skills in php, javascript, python and server admin-y stuff will come in real handy at these places. :D
For example, some help is needed here to fix these tests after a new theme was added to wiki.mozilla.org and they are in python. https://github.com/mozilla/wiki-tests - more info in #mozwebqa
And maybe some help with perl might be needed with firebot, a irc bot written in perl. Channel #firebot for that.
And #communityit (for server admin stuff) and #sumodev could use some help as well, just pop in and ask. :)

  • Queries in production

    Hi Guru,
We have some queries in production. But there are couple of them which other users cannot able to see or not available. Only I can see on my PC. They all have the same rights or roles as I do. i.e. fullcontrol. any suggestion please.
    thank You

    Hello Amit,
When you say the users are not able to see the queries, I am assuming the workbooks. Since, this happens a lot in a system when a workbook has changed and has been transported over the id associated with the workbook changes due to which the authorization doesn't work any more and they are not assigned to any role.
In order to avoid this please run the program "RSWB_ROLES_REORG" to first identify all the corrupted workbooks (if my assumption is correct).
Then you can either assign them to a role and before that make sure the right id is assigned to the role.
Also refer to the OSS Note 385219 for additional information in this regards.
Please assign the points if this answers your issue else let me know additional details.
    Thanks
    Dharma.

  • ESR role in different development, test, and production systems

    Hello,
I want to know the role of ESR in development, test, and production system. Do I have to install ESR in every seprate installated SAP CE machine??? or should It be centrally and development., test and production systems can use it?? Does software release process effects in the whole landscape??
does Test and Production system requires ESR??? or all used services are embed into released software SCA files to test and production system???
    Regards,
    Naeem

    Hey,
as far as I understood the ESR is a design time tool, i think  you don't need to have a productive instance.
I think it should be installed on your PI systems. And I would prefer to have at least a devel and a test installation, to
separate services on test machines from those who are running on productive systems.
as you can't differentiate the services by their name but just by their systems, you should have separate ESR Instances.
Nevertheless I think it could be possible to run only one ESR....
    Kind Regards
    Christof

  • Development, quality analysis & production servers

    hi,
can anyone tell what is the use of Development server, Quality Analysis server & Production Server...pls... tell me what are its uses & where are they used?  If we develop any project, it comes under which server? when will we use Production server.....
    Thanks & Regards,
    vijaya

<b>Development Server</b> - Used while you are developing your application (product). Its of general usage.
<b>Quality Server</b> - The application targetted to have some application only that meant to be shipped or used by customer. Here you can have environment similar to production system and test the application (product).
<b>Production Server</b> - Used to have the actual application (product). Used by customer directly.
Having different servers helps to control the development and maintainence of your product.

  • How to export tables from development server to production server

    HI,
Any body plz let me know how to export tables from development server to production server. what are the user names and password i need to ask my manager to do that. what are the requirements i need to ask him.
    Plz reply me ASAP.
    Thanks in advance.

    hi buddy
first of all you should let us know the environment of production and development servers
    database versions
and you need to have userid which has privilege to export tables of other schema. userid(owner) of the tables you want to export.
    Traditional way
export tables in development server and then ftp to production and then import
in the above case you should have similar database structure(tablespace etc) to avoid errors...
if there are few tables only , you can use dblink instead of export and import...
