Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • Discoveries while trying to setup Leopard Server - Help! What am I doing ??

I have documented 2 scenarios and i would like some help with proper build procedures. Until today I have been using the host record I asked my ISP who also hosts Pri/Sec for my company domain to setup. It wasn't until this morning that I realized that they didn't setup a PTR record so because of that I did a RDNS lookup on my static IP and today I programmed that into the host/domain fields thru my build so that there was proper RDNS for the setup. Which looks like this rrcs-0-0-0-0.central.biz.us.rr.com zero's being an actual static IP.
Scenario 1- Install Leopard onto MacMini with Standard install and use Apple Airport extreme for NAT firewall/router. Ok so I have done this about 4-6 times to try and get this right.
    A. Install Leopard and let OS auto config Airport-N for port mapping.
    B. Airport WAN is static IP from ISP and LAN is 10.0.1.1, Mini LAN is 10.0.1.2 Airport is DHCP provider on LAN.
    C. Mini hostname is set to rrcs-0-0-0-0 and domain is set to central.biz.us.rr.com
    D. After the system was rebooted after install I immediately got an error because the server prefs told me it could not find server rrcs-0-0-0-0.central.biz.us.rr.com which was weird because it is a brand new build. but since I setup the computer name to be mac-srvr I was able to remove the FQDN and input mac-srvr.local and then I could sign in. ---- I think this happened because when I am trying to log into the server prefs it's going out and performing a lookup and returning an error because from inside the FQDN reverse is actually the WAN interface of the Airport and not the LAN of the mini even though I told the mini to be the FQDN. Hope that makes sense and someone can tell me if I am right and then how to fix it .
    E. When I connected the MacBook and setup a user on the LAN side and then immediately disconnected from LAN and performed Dialup to the internet I was able to use the VPN for the first time which is great but but but the ichat would not work as I kept getting certificate errors and the ical from what I remember was good.
So major issues here in this scenario is that internally the server is setup as rrcs-0-0-0-0.central.biz.us.rr.com and services don't seem to be able to find that computer. And second ichat does not accept the default certificate and or cannot connect to the ichat server.
Scenario 2 - Install Leopard onto MacPro with Standard install nic0-wan with static ip 0.0.0.0 and nic1-lan with static of 192.168.1.1
    A. Install Leopard and set hostname=rrcs-0-0-0-0 and domain=central.biz.us.rr.com with computer name of mac-srvr.
    B. Upon server reboot and the second interface is not giving out IP's, I found that the range was from 192.168.1.2-254 and the default search domain was example.com because I Ieft that field blank during install and so I had to stop DHCP and setup someting like company.office and restart and all is was good.
    C. Once Macbook was on LAN and services setup properly I then disconnected and I was not able to VPN into the network like on the macmini unless I opened up the server admin and went the vpn console and then enabled pptp with another range. I could then PPTP vpn but not L2TP which should have worked out of the setup. But when I do PPTP I cannot gain access to server resources via smb://192.168.1.1 which is what the server automatically creates when you run server gateway assistant.
    D. The ichat and or L2TP VPN does not work unless I actually go into the Server Admin and disable it which I have another posting in VPN/Networking support about this for a 3rd build showing the same issues.
So major issues here are that services such as ichat, L2TP does not work unless I disable firewall, PPTP does work but does not pass traffic onto the LAN or I can't log into the server shares.
So if anyone has any insight, I am about 20 rebuilds in trying to get just one working properly over the past 3 days. And if anyone has a step by step that would be even better lol. I have all the Apple Server Docs as I attended a training seminar recently so I am well versed in the generic documentation but there is nothing in the server admin or any other apple doc that states this is what you need and how to do it as far as setup goes with setting up your Leopard server if you don't have external DNS and or if you just want to have a fake dns setup like fakeserver.fakedomain.office as we do with SBS. So any help would be good.

Found that if I clean up DNS for my domain with PTR and A then everything started working properly after a rebuild.

  • Want to Install 10.6 on Mini built for 10.6 Server - help?

Hi there - I'd recently bought a Mini Server running 10.6 Server Edition, and I'd like to install the regular 10.6 OS on it... but the Mini is not letting me. I keep getting the grey screen of death followed by a kernel puke every time I go to install.
Anyone got any hints on getting that normal 10.6 installed on hardware configured for 10.6 server?
For those wondering: I need the normal 10.6 OS so I can run MAMP. MAMP is not reco'd or supported by 10.6 server - http://forum.mamp.info/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8062  I actually got MAMP running on 10.6 server... for a bit. Then it started throwing all sorts of errors, would not connect to MySQL, and then finally refused to launch. Ugh.
I will be using this Mini for web dev and running my install of ActiveCollab. Currently I have an older Mini running all of this, but it is running MAMP on 10.5 (not server edition) - and I'm just looking to update to the new Mini hardware, then take that older box and repurpose it somewhere. I actually blogged about the original 10.5 setup a while ago, the overall scenario has been updated a bit since then (not using Remote Desktop Transporter any longer or but it's roughly the same configuration as it was then: http://www.fatheaddesign.com/352/build-your-own-mac-dev-server-for-under-100/
Thanks so much for any assistance everyone, any help is very much appreciated!

Niel: Fantastic suggestion, and I am definitely going to try this.
Question though: if I can't get this Mini to boot from a normal OS install disc, then what happens in the future if I need to do any maintenance on it via bootable OS disc?
Just thinking out loud here, if that cloning method works than possibly I should do a mirror of the system onto a hard drive right after install, just in case. Then if anything happens I can either fall back on my Time Machine backups or do a clean reinstall from the mirror and then restore files from the Time Machine backup.

  • RMAN backup restoring to new server help!

I'm using Oracle 8.1.7. The production database was copied (datafiles, controlfile etc) to a NEW server that I'm trying to set up as a development DB. I take full database backups using RMAN from the production server, and I want to restore them on the development server. I think I somehow have to specify the filename/location of the backup file but I can't seem to figure out how to do it.
I am not using a recovery catalog.
    Any help is appreciated.

If you restore the controlfile backup to the development server RMAN
will "read" the expected location of the backupsets from there.
In 8i you cannot use the CATALOG command so you have to copy all
the backupsets to the same path on the development server as on the
    production server.
Once you have your init.ora and controlfiles in place (and created the
expected target directory structure for the database and redolog files),
you can use STARTUP MOUNT and thene RESTORE from RMAN.
I believe that you should be able to rename files in 8i RMAN as well.
If not, you'll have to stick to restoring to the same location.
The key thing is that the controlfile records the "location" of the RMAN backupsets
and the "location" where datafiles are to be restored to.

  • Upgrading Mail from 10.3.9 to 10.4.8 Server - Help Needed, Please

    Hi
I posted a message a few weeks back with regard to this topic, but have had no replies. I don't seem to be any further on in solving this on my own, so I'm posting again in the hope that someone will be able to assist.
I have an Xserve G4 running 10.3.9 which is a Open Directory Master, PDC and also acts as a Mail Server for our domain. The system software is installed on one 60gb drive in the Xserve and the Mail Store is on a second drive. All the Windows clients can log into the domain and their mail is on IMAP using Outlook as their client.
I am now installing a second server in another office, and obviously this will be a new XServe running 10.4. I would like to make this an Open Directory Replica but now need to upgrade the first server to 10.4 before I can do this.
Each attempt has been at the start of a weekend when staff have gone home, so that I can shutdown Mail and clone the Mail Store before proceeding.
My first attempt was to install a new 10.4 installation onto a drive module and then attempt to upgrade the Mail. I removed the original 10.3.9 startup drive and I cloned the mail store drive before attempting and then followed the instructions given in this article:-
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301656
When running the first part of this script, I get a socket error and don't seem to be able to get beyond this point.
Next, I atttempted a straightforward upgrade. To do this, I again cloned the Mail Store onto another Drive Module, and so that I could roll back in case of problems, I also cloned the startup drive. Once this was done, I then removed the original drives for safety, booted and proceeded to upgrade the Server software from 10.3.9 to 10.4 performing all updates along the way.
When I first booted, I had quite a lot of errors, DNS zones hadn't come over, and I had to kerberize the system, but after doing this and several restarts to cure other problems, all seemed to be OK, but then when I invoked Windows services and tried to log into the domain from a PC client, it failed saying the Domain Controller wasn't available, and the server log shows "Broken Pipe" errors and I cannot seem to resolve these issues. Server admin, also now loses connection with various services at intermittant times and I have to reboot.
So, my conclusion is that the 10.3.9 installation on this server is way too flaky to be upgraded and I must find another way.
Ideally, what I would like to do, is install a brand new 10.4 system onto the server, setting up DNS, Open Directory etc etc ensuring that my clients can log into the domain (copying their profile to the new account if necessary) and then upgrade the Mail once it is all stable. Can anyone help me with this by giving me a step by step guide? I am willing to pay for someone who knows how to do this if they can help me with a guide or perhaps even provide remote assistance.
    Thanks in advance
    Paul
    PowerBook G4 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   G4 Xserve 1GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 10.3.9 Server

They've never heard of a G4? That's shocking, perhaps you shouldn't go there anymore :P.
OS X 10.5 requires at least an 867 MHz G4, unfortunately. You can upgrade to OS X Tiger (10.4) though (Just run software update after installation to get to 10.4.11).
You can find Tiger cheap on eBay or the likes, note you must buy the full retail version which looks like this:

  • Oracle AS connect to MS SQL server - help please.

    hi there
can anyone tell or show me how to connect Oracle app server to MS sql server? thanks

    Hi Tom,
For stand-alone OC4J (any version), you need to add an appropriate entry to the "data-sources.xml" file (in the "j2ee/home/config" subdirectory) and put the JDBC driver file(s) into the "j2ee/home/lib" subdirectory. On my OC4J 9.0.3 distribution (on my Windows XP machine), there already is a "ms-sql.xml" file in the "j2ee/home/config/database-schemas" subdirectory. If you don't have one, then you may need to create one, or if you do already have one, you may need to modify it. More information can be found at these Web sites:

  • Java code to create a new .txt file in FTP server  --- Help

    Hi,
I wrote a standalone java app which creates a .txt file in my local machine and transfers it to FTP server. But my requirement now is to create a new .txt file with the same content in FTP server itself instead of creating locally with basic java code.
I'm aware of transfering file from local machine to the FTP server using STOR command of FTP. But i never tried creating a new file & writing content into that in FTP server.
So, if any one did this before please help me out with source code or any idea ???
    Thank you.

thanks for your reply. yes i've seen the Apache Commons NET API , but there is no method or class to create a new file in FTP server. I'm really worried how to solve this problem ???Sure there is.
There's a method where you can write data to a file on the server using an OutputStream, right? Well, instead of writing to a FileOutputStream, write to that OutputStream instead. Remember to close the OutputStream and call the method which says you're finished with the command (I forget what it's called).

  • Connecting a kiosk to a server - help out a newbie!

well no exactly a newbie, but sort of
    hey all
i am self-taught and i have pretty good as3 and mxml skills and have worked with Flash Pro and Flex, but only for my own stuff at home. i have only done local AIR stuff that don't require sending and getting data from a server
now someone has asked if i could build him a kiosks/server system, and i want to dive into that
the kiosks would be deployed in stores and have touchscreens displaying pictures, movies, banners and accept user control and data - no problem here
i plan to build his remote controlling software in Flex and the kiosk AIR apps in Flex or Flash pro.
the kiosks should periodically connect to the server to see if updates are available  and download swf, jpeg and movie (mp4? flv?) files to the local filesystem (no live streaming is needed)
also, user created data (forms only) should be sent to the server - i guess xml
since i have no server side or server connection experience could you help me out here - what to investigate further into:
    URLloader?
    Sockets?
    HTTPrequests?
    WEBrequests?
    RemoteObects?
can all this be in as3 alone or do i need stuff like php also?
also, would i be able in the controlling flex app to determine if specific kiosks are offline?
    thanx a million,
    Saar

you can use urlloader to load data from the server but you may also need serer-side code (unless you're hard-coding file names).

  • My ipad wont connect to the internet server, help please!

My ipad suddenly wouldn't connect to the internet so I turned it off and on, checked the settings, there wasn't anything wrong and I could connect to my wifi from my phone in the same location. So I pressed reset and delete all data and settings. Now it wont reset and a message comes up that says "your ipad could not be activated because the activation server cannot be reached:. Try connecting your ipad to itunes to activate it or try again in a couple of minutes." I cant connect to itunes because I cant get past this page in the reconfiguring process. Trying again and again will not work. Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

By reseting and deleting all data and settings, you wiped your iPad clean of anything that was "yours". Put your iPad into recovery mode and restore from iTunes. Hopefully you have a backup there to recover all your data.

  • Another Newbie, how can Mac OSX Server help my School?

Hi all, the school where i work has just taken delivery of 11 brand new macs. 8 iMacs, 2 MBP's and a mini. What i'm interested to know and if anybody is just prepared to bullet point, is how we can really benefit from this software.
Clearly it's going to be tricky administering 11 macs individually, so maybe sacrifice the mini to become the server. Heres some basic questions and if anybody has any other comments they can add from experience i can approach the school with my findings?
    1) Can multiple third party software installations be initiated. i.e. we have Adobe CS3 can a multiple install be initiated over the network or would all machines have to be updated individually.
    2) A big concern is storage, if a server is used can files be stored locally on the machines or would they have to be stored on the server, Xserve isn't on the cards unfortunately. Is it like a windows server where the profile is stored on the server and then just downloaded to the appropriate machine. For the meantime we ideally need to store locally or on firewire drives to keep storage issues to a minimum. It's no problem making students stick to the same mac if we can make this happen.
    3) Could backups be initiated from all machines to some sort of storage facility.
    4) I'm guessing it's easy to lock machines down, it seems very easy to do on standard OSX so i'm guessing it would be even easier on server.
Being a school i would be grateful for any advice or recommendations on how administering this small network would be easiest done. I'm an experienced mac user but no in a network scenario, i am however keen to learn.
    Thanks in Advance

Hi, I'll give a go at answering your questions.
First, how tricky it will be to administer 11 macs individually truly depends on your users. I've setup offices where the employees were intelligent people who weren't interested in hacking around on their machines, they just did their work. All their user accounts had admin privileges (along with an admin account on each machine that only the appropriate people knew the password for) so they could easily change preferences and do updates, etc. I barely had a problem with them. If you have a group who are all into surfing naughty bits and bittorrenting and other things, then you'll need to lock them down. If you are going to lock them down, you can still do it without the aid of a server by having an admin account on each machine, but you will have to touch each machine periodically to install updates and such. If you do go with server, then you can manage a lot more centrally. By the nature of you having 11 machines and the limit of OS X client of only 10 file sharing connections at a time, you're almost forced into OS X Server and the Unlimited version at that.
    1) Yes you can initiate software installations simultaneously, but it will require you to capture and package those installations, and use something along the lines of FileWave, radmind, Apple Remote Desktop, etc. to perform the push. For the number of users you're dealing with, it's probably much easier to host the installer on the network, and screen control each system and run the install (along with entering the serial numbers for each one). Any future updates could be easily performed with a terminal script and access to the updater files.
    2) You can store your files anywhere you want, locally or on the server (or even on a NAS). Obviously it makes sense to host them on the server (or other central location) if they are collaborative files (ie., everyone works on them or needs to see them). Your question about the windows profiles doesn't make sense with the storage part, but you can choose how to run your server/client model. You can have roaming profiles where the users' home directories are stored on the server and they can login from any machine. Or you can have individual machines and the server only authenticates the user for access to mail/file/whatever services.
    3) Yes. Either by using Time Machine if it gets fixed in 10.5.2, Retrospect (which I don't trust and haven't for years), rsync (which is free and built into the OS and is cross platform so you could even back up Windows clients), or some other commercial client like PresSTORE.
    4) Yes, as I stated above you can lock down the client machines and of course server can be locked down to avoid people from messing it up.
I know you mentioned an Xserve isn't an option, but how about a MacPro tower? In your situation, I would setup a MacPro with a single 2.8Ghz Quad core chip, Unlimited MacOS X Server, 2GB RAM, and 2 x 500 GB SATA drives for $3648 (cheaper if you get the drives from elsewhere). If there's the chance you could migrate other school services to the new server (email, websites, shared calendar, jabber server, etc.) you could upgrade the processor and memory (RAM can also be had cheaper from a 3rd party). You setup the two drives in a mirror RAID for fault protection and it would contain your OS and your file shares. Then get 2 external firewire drives, at least 500 GB each. Configure your network backups (and the server itself) to backup to an external drive, leave it attached for a week, and at the end of the week, eject the drive, disconnect it, and plug in the other drive (both should be named the same). Then take the first drive off-site (to another building on campus, etc.). Repeat every week. This gives you a rotating off-site backup. If even that is not an option, the mini could be the server, but you definitely want to max the RAM, and buy one of those nice mirrored RAID enclosures from OWC as your main drive, along with the 2 externals for rotating backup.
I hope that's answered some of your questions, feel free to ask more if need be. May I ask where you are located? If by some amazing chance we're close by, I might be more of a help. Take care and good luck.

  • Problem with clustering with JBoss server---help needed

    Hi,
Its a HUMBLE REQUEST TO THE EXPERIENCED persons.
I am new to clustering. My objective is to attain clustering with load balencing and/or Failover in JBoss server. I have two JBoss servers running in two diffferent IP addresses which form my cluster. I could succesfully perform farm (all/farm) deployment
    in my cluster.
I do believe that if clustering is enabled; and if one of the server(s1) goes down, then the other(s2) will serve the requests coming to s1. Am i correct? Or is that true only in the case of "Failover clustering". If it is correct, what are all the things i have to do to achieve it?
As i am new to the topic, can any one explain me how a simple application (say getting a value from a user and storing it in the database--assume every is there in a WAR file), can be deployed with load balencing and failover support rather than going in to clustering EJB or anything difficult to understand.
Kindly help me in this mattter. Atleast give me some hints and i ll learn from that.Becoz i could n't find a step by step procedure explaining which configuration files are to be changed to achieve this (and how) for achiving this. Also i could n't find Books explaining this rather than usual theorectical concepts.
    Thanking you in advance
    with respect
    abhirami

    hi ,
In this scenario u can use the load balancer instead of fail over clustering .
I would suggest u to create apache proxy for redirect the request for many jboss instance.

  • Does moving SP code from DB to App Server help scale an application?

We have an application developed using Oracle 10g Forms / 10g DB? All our processing is done using SPs. So they all run in the DB server. Even our Inserts/updates/deletes to a table are handled by SPs.
The site with the maximum simultaneous users (i.e. concurrent users) is one with 100 concurrent users.
We have prospective customer whose requirement is 300 concurrent users. Our application won't be able to handle it since the DB server is a single processor server with limited memory.
One suggestion was move the SPs to the App Server by moving them to the Form. Since OAS has a PL engine they will run in the App Server and hence remove the workload of the DB.
I don't buy this. My point is, even if SPs are moved to the app. server still the SQLs will run in the DB server, right?
    So what is the advantage?

christian, I just modified the original post thinking nobody will reply since it's very long. Thanks a lot for the reply. For others and myself also here is my original question.
I have a problem like this: Take this scenario. We have a TELCO app. It is an E-Business Web Application (i.e. Dynamic Web Site) developed using ASP.Net/C#. App. Server is IAS and DB is Oracle 10g. IAS and the DB reside in 2 servers. Both are single processor servers.
The maximum simultaneous user load is 500. i.e. 500 users can be working in the system at one time.
Now suppose 500 users login at the same time and perform 500 different operations (i.e. querying, inserts, updates, deletes). Now all 500 operations will go to the App Server. From there the C# code will perform everything using Oracle stored procedures (SP). I.e. we first make a connection to the DB, SP is invoked by passing parameters, it will perform the operation in the DB, send the output to the App. Server C# code and we will close the Oracle connection (in App Server. C# code).
Now, the 500 operations will obviously have to wait in a queue and the SQLs will be processed in the DB server.
Now, question is how does CONNECTION POOLING help in this situation?
I have been told that the above method of using DB SP to perform processing will make the whole system very slow since all the load of the processing has to borne by the DB Server and since DB Operations involve disk I/O it will be very slow. They say you cannot SCALE the application with this DB Processing mode and you have to move to App. Server processing mode in order to scale your application. I.e. If the number of users increases to 1000 our application won’t be able to handle it and will get very slow.
What they suggest is to move all the processing to the App. Server (i.e. App. Svr. Memory). They also say that CONNECTION POOLING can help even further to improve the performance.
I have some issues with this. First of all to get all the data to the App server memory for each user process from the DB will not only require disk I/O, it will also involve a network trip. That will obviously take time. Again the DB requests to fetch the data will have to wait in the DB queue. Then we do the processing in the App. Server memory and then we have to again write to the DB server which again will require a network trip and disk I/O. According to my thinking won’t this take MORE TIME than doing it in the DB server??
Also how can CONNECTION POOLING help. In C# we OPEN a connection ONLY just before run the SP or get the data and we close the connection just after the operation is over.
I don’t’ see how CONNECTION POOLING can improve anything?
I also don’t see how moving data into the App. Server from the DB Server can improve the performance. I think that will only decrease performance.
Am I right or have I missed something?

  • Instant Client with SQL Server - HELP!!

    G'day all...
My goal is to connect to a server using Oracle Database version 8.1.7.4, from a server which does not have either Oracle Database or the full Oracle Client, preferrably using SQL Server DTS packages.
With that said, I have installed instant client basic and instant client ODBC suppliment on our first development server using the instructions at the following link without any difficulties, although I do admit that I only have a tnsnames.ora file and not a sqlnet.ora file:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/instantclient.html
The trouble is, when I attempt to deploy it on any of our other servers it fails. When I attempt to connect using Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle in a DTS package in SQL Server I get the following error message:
HResult of 0x8004005 (-2147467259) returned Unexpected error occurred. An error result was returned without an error message.
(Note: This is seen on all other servers I've tried this on except for the first one).
I have also tried setting up a System ODBC connection using the Instant Client driver but it returned this error message:
    Unable to connect
    SQLState=S1000
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12705: invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified
In desperation I have also tried installing the Oracle RDB Driver and the Oracle 8.1.7.8.1.0 ODBC driver. Both appear to install successfully yet nothing seems to work.
As far as I can tell,l these are the differences between the first server and the other servers:
    - First server is MS SQL Server 2000 version: 8.00.760, rest are 8.00.818
    - First server is running MS SQL Server Analysis services, rest are not
    - First server is MS Windows 2000 Advanced Server, rest are MS Windows 2000 Server
So my first question: Does anyone know if the Instant Client tool works with SQL Server version: 8.00.818?
My second question: Can anyone else suggest something that I haven't tried yet, short of installing the Full Oracle Client on this server? Not that I'm opposed to doing that, it's just that it's a last resort idea as of now...
Please help - need to roll this into production soon...

Kent, I see that many others have reported that error (doing
a google search), but I see no ready answers. I saw something that
reminded me of a connection string value that I've seen answer some
problems. May be worth a shot for you: try adding this string to
the connection string (in "advanced options") for your datasource:
    AuthenticationMethod=Type2
If it doesn't solve it, remove it. But keep it handy in case
it ever may help with some other problem.
Here's one other possible answer for you:

Sorry I can't be more clear for you.
