Diagnosis please

A 5 year old PowerPC iMac running OS 10.4.9. Today, a kernel panic, and now it has a dark gray screen and that's it. It starts up okay with a blue screen (spinning thingy), then goes dark gray. I tried PRAMming it and there's no response. I can't get the Superdrive door open to try restarting with the DVD. To turn it off, I have to hold the start button in for about 5 seconds. Worked great for almost 5 years! Is it dead (logic board)? worth resuscitating? Any help would be appreciated.

Not good news I'm afraid. VRAM is soldered on to the logic-board. You will need a logic-board replacement.
I had a replacement about two years ago costing £325 + £65 fitting cost.
I've replaced many internal components in the iMac G4 but wouldn't do a logic-board.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Problem with iBook powering on... Need help diagnosing please

    Hello,
So for awhile my iBook G3 (dual USB, 700 mhz, 12" display) when the power is pressed the computer chimes and the hard drive will start spinning and then nothing happens. After a few seconds I can hear the drive stop spinning and the only sign of power is that the keyboard will light at the caps lock key.
I tried doing a PMU/PRAM reset and the iBook did a long beep noise, then the hardrive started spinning, then power light started flickering, and than it chimed and that's it.
Not sure what to do with it. I love this computer, and all though it's older and well out of date, it's ultra compact and worked great for wireless internet surfing when away from home. I'd appreciate any help to help figure out what this problem is and if it's worth paying to get it fixed or to replace it.
    Thanks for reading,
    Matt
iMac G5, iBook G3, iMac DV   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

First, check out the Apple Knowledge Base article on troubleshooting portables that won't turn on or start up to see if something there helps.
It sounds like you may be having logic board problems. Enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from the logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar and it is not past the three-year time limit, give Apple a call.
You can find the original purchase date of the iBook, by entering its serial number into the box at the bottom of Apple's main support page under "About Your Support Coverage."
If it is past the three-year time limit (and it probably is), you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.
    John Sawyer
    CJS Macintosh Repair
Instructions for removing the lower case:
    iFixit.com
If the shim fix doesn't work (or you're leery of trying it), DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California offers the cheapest repair I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.
Once you get it fixed, try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. The theory is that picking it up by the left front corner alone can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.
If you can't manage to get it fixed free or on your own with the shim fix, I almost think it's a better idea to put the money you would spend on a repair toward a new MacBook. They are such a spectacular upgrade over the iBook G3. Hard drive specs, USB 2.0, RAM, processor, Tiger, the newest version of iLife, built-in AirPort Extreme, Bluetooth capabilities, and built-in iSight camera. If you can afford it, that may be the way to go. With a new MacBook, you have the option of using Migration Assistant to transfer your data to the new computer, but that likely won't work if you can't get the iBook to start up at all. However, with a new Mac, you may be able to retrieve some of your data using FireWire Target Disk Mode.
Good luck. Let us know how things go.

  • Getting lots of kernel panics, help me diagnose please

My battery (117 cycles on an early 2011 MBP) has decreased to about 30% of it's original capacity. I have a service battery message. I think that it was around when I got this message that I started getting loads of kernel panics.
I can get severel of them every week. I also have problems installing software, for instance when I tried to update to 10.8.3 through AppStore, the update failed and I had to download the combo update manually to be able to install it.
I am travelling and don't have access to my Time Machine backup, I would have done a fresh install of OS X already if I'd had access to my harddrive.
I got a kernel panic just before I started typing here.

You're getting random panics, some of which don't involve any third-party kernel extensions, so those extensions are not causing the problem. Almost certainly, a hardware fault is.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Format external drive partition under 10.2.8

Hello. I have been trying to setup a WD My Book 500gb with 2 partitions to be used as on offsite backup unit for our business computers. We have one Mac (this G5), and 4 Windows stations (3 XP/ 1 98SE). I am trying to setup this unit with one partition using NTFS and the other with Mac HFS or HFS+ file systems. I have found a utility that allows me to format the partition that I intend to use with the Mac as a FAT32 partition. I then tried bringing the WD MyBook to the G5 and reformatting that partition as HFS. When I run Disk Utility, I click on the partition showing as Fat32 under disk2 and then click on the Erase tab, select Mac OS X Extended file system, no OS9 drivers, have tried various names (Mac BU, My Mac BU, My MacBook, etc), then click Erase, Confirm Erase. The progress bar comes up for a moment or so, says that it is erasing the volume, then exits out as if done. Unfortunately, it never mounts the drive and the volume no longer shows up in Disk Utility (only shows the Drive without any recognized partitions) until I close and restart Disk Utility. When I restart Disk Utility, the volume I am trying to format once again shows up under the drive, tho now with no name. Under Identification, it says Mount Point: Not Mounted/ Format: MS-DOS/ Capacity: 116.44gb. After doing some browsing around onthe internet trying to troubleshoot this on my own, I found some reference to Disk Utility logs (supposedly avail in upper right corner, tho didn't find there). I searched in the Library/Logs/Crash Reporter and found 'Disk Utility.crash.log' which says:
    Date/Time: 2008-09-17 21:25:42 -0400
    OS Version: 10.2.8 (Build 6S90)
    Host: Joanns-Computer.local.
    Command: Disk Utility
    PID: 540
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x01215088
Any suggestions on how I might get this partition formatted for a Mac file system? I would use Fat32, but I plan to use RSyncX to backup this G5 and would like to make the backup bootable in case of critical failure. And since I am using this drive as a backup storage device rather than file sharing system, I have no need to access files on either partition from the opposite operating system.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be rendered. Also, if more info or more of the log file is needed to diagnose, please let me know.
PS: Sorry if this is in wrong forum. Wasn't sure if this falls under Setup, Customizing or something else.

You can either format the drive entirely FAT32 that can be used on both Windows and Mac or you can format the drive entirely for the Mac, but you cannot have one partition of each on the same drive (not with Jaguar. You would need Leopard to accomplish that and an Intel Mac.)
There is this article/hint explaining a method for doing so, but I do not know if it is doable with Jaguar. Maybe Panther since the hint appeared about the time Panther was released.

  • IPod classic fails to sync some tracks from iTunes

I use an iPod Classic 160 GB with iTunes. Both are fully up to date. Every time I sync with iTunes roughly 500 of 5000 odd tracks fail to sync. This number fluctuates, but stays around the 500 mark. iTunes does not recognise this problem - it claims to have synced completely. It is only when I go through certain Albums I notice that some tracks are missing. It tends to affect the same artists, but different songs are missing within any given Album each time. (ie: a song may appear on the iPod one try, then be gone the next.)
All my tracks are either AAC audio file or MPEG audio file. The problem seems to affect them irrespective of kind.
There is plenty of space on the iPod, with over 100 GB free.
I have tried Retry, Reset, Restart, Reinstall, Restore - all multiple times, with no result. I have tried syncing auto and manually, and wiping both iTunes and iPod every way I can think of. Still, when I sync, the problem remains.
This problem is driving me crazy, especially since I can find no cause, and no applicable advice on forums. I have searched Help forums for answers, but everything that comes up either doesn't match or I have already tried with no result.
    Please help.
If I need to give more detail for an accurate diagnosis please let me know.
I will be eternally greatful to anyone who can help.
    Thank you, Jonny.

I'm also having the same issue.  I have recently had to get rid of my old PC that my ipod was synced to and so have now had to sync my ipod to my new laptop.  The problem started as soon as I did this - at first it was saying that my laptop wasn't authorised in the itunes store, but it is and I have reconfirmed this.  All of my music was copied across from old computer but there are around 2000 songs not syncing.  If anyone can help it would be hugely appreciated, it's driving me mad! One other thing is that I went to download all of my previous itunes purchases to this laptop but only 3 of them actually downloaded - I had separately copied them across from my old computer anyway but wanted to keep the list of my purchases - when I go into my account it thinks I have downloaded everything so won't let me do it again.  I'm assuming both problems relate in some way to the new machine, but I don't know why.

  • Mac mini takes twice to wake up

Basically i have a intel mac mini and whenever i try to wake it up it always takes more than once to get it to come back fully. usually i'll wake it up the first time, see the desktop, then it will immediately go back to sleep, and then it will come back alright the second time. If you need to see any log files to help diagnose, please let me know

Mine does the same thing, but not all the time. I'd say about 50% of the time.

  • Photoshop crashes when opening a file (stalling)

Can anyone please help me with this issue? I have searched all available threads, yet none of the solutions have worked when executed. I hope this isn't too much information, but I wanted to provide as much as I could in order to obtain a solution/work around.
I am working on a Mac mini, 1.66 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, Snow Leopard 10.6.6.
Each time I open Photoshop, all of the tools appear, but I can only open a file by dragging it from a folder location to the Ps icon. Once the file is open, I can make limited changes using the Menu items at the top of the screen, but no keyboard shortcuts will work & result in a beach ball stall.
Ps will crash if I attempt:
    • mouse over the menu items too fast.
    • attempt to save my changes. (Save, Save As, etc.)
    • Try to open a file with the menu, and/or keyboard shortcuts.
This is as far as I can get and then the beach ball appears and I have to 'force quit'. I have attempted multiple files from .psd to .jpeg, etc.
I accidentally stumbled on to a Windows forum, and attempted some of those fixes, as well:
    • turning off printer sharing.
    • deleting all content relating to Lexmark 5400 series printer. (which I no longer use.)
    • deleting 3rd party software, which was Sony freeware related to a digital voice recorder. (I couldn't even use it because Sony and Windows must have a proprietary agreement.)
    In addition I have:
    • Reinstalled Ps, and downloaded/installed all available Adobe updates.
    • Downloaded/installed all available Mac updates, except for the Lexmark update because I am no longer using the printer.
    • I deleted the Lexmark printer from the System Settings, and did another software update search, after which the update mentioned previously no longer appeared. I have restarted multiple times.
I have replaced the Lexmark with an HP Photosmart D110 series print/copier/scan (no fax) model, have a Kodak Easy Share (series 3) printer connected, and an Epson Perfection 1250 scanner. I have made the Kodak my 'default' printer under advice found in the Windows section of a similar discussion on this issue.
The only other USB devices connected are a WD MyBook 320 GB external drive, and the Apple slim line keyboard with a mighty mouse. Occasionally, I will connect an iPod/iPad for music/device updates, and then disconnect them
I have attempted to include the report that is generated each time Ps crashes below, however the forum site keeps timing out. Must be too long. Although I am not 100% certain it is exactly the same each time due to the length of content, and my lack of programming knowledge. If the report is required to diagnose, please let me know and I will attempt to re-post.
As with most others, Ps is a primary system I use and being unemployed I do not have the means to upgrade to CS5, nor to pay Adobe tech support to diagnose. This program is essential in my search for a job.
Any assistance that can be provided is sincerely, and greatly appreciated.

We need to see the crash report (or get the email address you used when submitting the crash to Adobe, and which specific version you are using) to figure out the cause.
This is as far as I can get and then the beach ball appears and I have to 'force quit'.
Wait - that's not a crash.  That's a hang or freeze (very different beast), and you wouldn't be able to send in a crash report.
Quick questions: Have you installed all the Photoshop updates?  Have you tried disabling all third party plugins?

  • Export (exp) taking long time and reading UNDO

    Hi Guys,
    Oracle 9.2.0.7 on AIX 5.3
A schema level export job is scheduled at night. Since day before yesterday it has been taking really long time. It used to finish in 8 hours or so but yesterday it took around 20 hours and was still running. The schema size to be exported is around 1 TB. (I know it is bit stupid to take such daily exports but customer requirement, you know ;) ) Today again it is still running although i scheduled it to run even earlier by 1 and 1/2 hour.
    The command used is:
    exp userid=abc/abc file=expabc.pipe buffer=100000 rows=y direct=y
    recordlength=65535 indexes=n triggers=n grants=y
constraints=y statistics=none log=expabc.log owner=abcI have monitored the session and all the time the wait event is db file sequential read. From p1 i figured out that all the datafiles it reads belong to UNDO tablespace. What surprises me is that when consistent=Y is not specified should it go to read UNDO so frequently ?
There is total of around 1800 tables in the schema; what i can see from the export log is that it exported around 60 tables and has been stuck since then. The logfile, dumpfile both has not been updated since long time.
Any hints, clues in which direction to diagnose please.
Any other information required, please let me know.
    Regards,
    Amardeep Sidhu

  • No Internet connection on wireless with WPA after 10.4.10 update

After the 10.4.10 update I can't connect to my network that uses WPA encryption. I'm able to connect to the router fine and ping computers and the router in my network but I can't view any websites. DNS to outside websites works too. I can view websites fine from my windows laptop connected via the same wireless router. Internet does work on my mac when I connect via my neighbor's open wireless connection so that's why I figure that encryption is the issue.
I have searched and read other posts on the forum and done what the recommened... I deleted the keychains related to my wireless router and deleted the router from my preferred networks then re-added the router. I have also run the permissions repair and reinstalled the 10.4.10 update. Nothing has helped.
I'm a mac newbie so if I'm missing any information that could help diagnose, please let me know.
    Thanks!

I have a wifi-related problem with 10.4.10 as well. Everything works fine when I'm plugged in, but when I switch to battery power, I can use the network just fine for a while, and then I'm cut off. I'm still connected to my wireless network, but no data comes in. Data input is restored once for a brief period, but then it dies completely and the only solution is to reboot. I'm having this behavior on my C2D MacBook (2GHz, 2GB), and a workmate has been complaining about a C2D MBP and a C2D MB dropping their wireless connections after the 10.4.10 upgrade. So it seems like something's borked on the wireless side.
I'm going on a two-week trip on Sunday and in the destination I'll depend on the wireless, so anyone with a quick solution has just earned him/herself a beer

  • Corruption on export from Motion? Help!!

    Greetings,
I'm experiencing an odd problem.. Unpredictably, my compressor output is completely corrupt, wacky horizontal lines across the frames, etc.. I've successfully exported this project TWICE, and after making a few minor adjustments, my last two renders were both corrupt. I need this project done TODAY, and can't afford another corrupted render!
Has anyone experienced anything like this?
If there's any more information you may need to diagnose, please let me know.. i'll be monitoring the forum.
    Thanks in advance!!

Well, lets push this baby to the top. After doing a number of batches with different projects, I actually havent seen the final file as I'm still in the middle of the export, I want to see it in the DVDSP viewer to see if it's a corrupt file or a compression problem, but suddenly I have black horizontal lines all over my video, after which my finder crashed and it took me a while to finally get the computer to be back to normal. I really dont even know if the finder and compressor issues are related, but my finder seems fine now, yet compressor was still acting up. I will continue searching for other posts related, but since I found this one I figured I'd jump in and push it to the top see if we can get some answers

  • BSOD infinite loop problem - Satellite M55

Many people are getting "infinite loop" error with M55 / ATI 200M.
Is there a fix for this? My laptop (purchased in May 2006) is worthless...reboots every 2 minutes. Totally unusable.
There was a post here where the user indicated they found a solution, but the solution was not posted :(
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=15169
Please reopen this thread, or post the solution.
If there is a new driver I'm supposed to use, please post the link (as opposed to just saying "use a new driver").
    Thanks.

The error appeared around the August / September 2006 timeframe. If you simply boot up the computer, it will happen with a few minutes, just viewing the desktop, with no applications causing the error.
The computer only has a 90 day warranty. It may have initially occurred within the warranty period, but the Toshiba support rep said it was out of warranty, and they could not help me. The M55 is a relatively inexpensive laptop, so the cost to bring it to a service center is would almost equal the replacement costs. :(
    I installed this Toshiba-provided driver: sm55evideox.exe
    http://www.askiris.toshiba.com/ToshibaSupportSite/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1158 481xml&sliceId=&dialogID=10312729&stateId=0%200%20 10310682
This was the most recent (July 2005) driver I could find for the M55-S1001.
If there is a different driver I should be using, please let me know.
Maybe I have to uninstall & then reinstall drivers? I don't know....
The Display properies show the driver is provided by:
    ATI Technologies
    The error message is thus:
    Blue screen...
"The problem seeems to be caused by the following file: ati2dvag"
    ati2dvag
    Beginning dump of physical memory
If there is more information or details that may be helpful in a fix or diagnosis, please let me know, and I will post it.

  • Spotlight endless

    What's wrong with spotlight???
It displays not " Indexing About 58660324 hours remaining".
I tried to reset Spotlight, to remove the drive from scanning preferences.
But once all back as before, it will scan my hard disk for hours endlessly.
    Any clue?
    Thanks

    +1 Me too!
I stopped it when it quoted 2000+ hours - then it failed to shutdown - I'm on a Mac Pro - spotlight doesn't index endlessly when my other drives are removed - so i'm presuming it's a broken hard drive. I'll Backup & Zero it - to see if that works.
I thought it was faulty ram - but I think it makes sense that it's a faulty drive. - my crashes were when- opening finder windows - going to save dialogues, opening disk utility... and on shutdown...
It also crashed when trying to force quite spotlight from Activity Monitor & also when running the 10.5.6 combo updater.
I've removed it now - ran combo update, then softwareupdat ( with permission repairs in the middle) and whilst i've not done any heavy lifting yet - it seems to be OK.
if anyone can add to my "unqualified" diagnosis - please, please do. i'd like my thoughts confirmed - or beaten down...

  • P1102W doesn't broadcast SSID & Driver cannot be installed on Mac OS 10.7.5

    Hi,
I bought a new wifi extender and managed to mess about the settings.  I have no idea how this happened.
But the current situation is that P1102W doesn't talk to me because it doesn't broadcast its SSID so I cannot login through its Embedded Web Server.  I cannot connect it through USB to my MacBook Pro either.  I suspect it is because I somehow messed up my driver setting.  But I cannot re-install my driver somehow.
the machine is on Mac OS 10.7.5.  The printer P1102w is already in its printer list (on wifi but is not connected).  I tried to reinstall driver in order to connect through USB.  But the installation always failed at the last step (mac popped up message suggesting me to talk to software supplier).  I have done "Repair Disk Permissions" a few times. Still the driver doesn't install.  The driver I talk about is "LJP1100_P1560_P1600_Full_Solution.dmg"
My HP P1102w has been reset to factory default by powering up while pressing the cancel (X) and wifi buttons a few times.  Although its blue wifi light is blinking, it doesn't broadcast its SSID, so I cannot connect to its web based set up page.
I hope someone out there can help me.  If I failed to provide any necessary information for your diagnosis, please let me know.  Thank you for your help.

    Hi @SillySilly,
I see by your post that you have lost the wireless connection with the printer, since setting up a extender. I can help you with this.
You will have to network the printer to the main network. Make sure there isn't any spaces or special characters in the network name.
Make sure Safari is set as the default browser. (sometimes the EWS won't open if it isn't set as the default)
Open Safari, across the top select the Safari menu, select Preferences, General, set as default.
If you can still print by a USB connection, skip to running the HTML Config section.
I would run the uninstaller, there might be bits and pieces of the old software still installed.
    Uninstalling the Printer Software.
    Reset the Printing System:
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.
Click the Apple icon ( ), and then click System Preferences.
    Click Printers & Scanners.
Right-click (or Ctrl +click) in the left white side panel, then click Reset printing system.
Click OK to confirm the reset.
Type the correct Name and Password.
Click OK to reset the printing system.
Connect the printer directly to the Mac.
Run the downloaded drivers again. HP LaserJet Full Feature Software and Driver.
If you have any issues with the HTML config opening then do the following steps:
    Close any applications.
On the Apple menu bar, click Go, computer, MAC harddrive, Library, Printers, HP, LaserJet, click on folder for your printer, click on EWS browser or HTML config, click the Networking tab, click wireless on the left and fill out your information. (make sure infrastructure is selected) Apply settings.
Then delete the USB driver and add the network printer.
Please provide in detail the results if you are still having issues.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
Click the “Kudos Thumbs Up" on the right to say “Thanks” for helping!

  • Applescript/Automator iPad restore?

I work for the educational technology department at a college, and we've begun issuing iPads to our faculty. I'm looking for an easy way to to restore the iPad through an applescript or automator workflow (preferrably that can be kicked off by simply plugging the iPad in). Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks!

It would be really great if people took the time to come back to posts they made and reported what the solution was, if there were any.
@slacksam you took the time to create a great post, can you take a moment to document what your resolution was? Others are having the exact same issue (as verified by your excellent post and diagnosis), please help us out!
