Dictionary lost - I have no words!

Last week out of the blue, while typing in AppleWorks WP I went to spell check and got an error message: "The main spell dictionary is not installed". Where did it go? How do I get it back?
Today I also attempted to open a couple of fairly recent documents and I got an error message for that too: The file [computer gibberish] was deleted. What is going on? What do I do about it?
Due to problems with AppleWorks in general I've been considering trying NeoOffice, or one of the many other options out there. Could this be the time to do that?
I am on an eMac running OS 10.3.9.

"Not installed" actually means "not selected," which in turn means that AppleWorks isn't aware where the dictionary is, and isn't connected t the dictionary.
Your main (aka spelling) dictionary should be located at Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks Essentials > Dictionaries.
On your way to the Dictionaries folder, check that AppleWorks 6 is also in the AppleWorks 6 folder. It needs to be in the same folder as AppleWorks Essentials (and other folders that should also be located here).
The Dictionaries folder should contain your main dictionary (English - Spelling) as well as a thesaurus, a hyphenation dictionary, and your User Dictionary. There will probably be others as well.
If they're not there, you'll need to reinstall AppleWorks from the original installation disks.
If the dictionaries are there, and appleWorks is where it should be, you'll need to tell Appleworks where the Main dictionary is.
Launch AppleWorks and open a new word processing document. Go Edit > Writing tools > Select Dictionaries...
In the Select Dictionaries dialogue, Click the Main Dictionary button and check the Currently Selected Dictionary window (It will probably say 'no dictionary selected). Click Choose.
An Open Dialogue will open, showing the contents of the Dictionaries folder, with the Main dictionaries listed in black and the rest in grey. Click on English - Spelling, then click Select.
In the Select Dictionaries dialogue, click each of the other radio buttons in turn to check if other dictionaries are installed (selected). Install any that are missing using the same steps as above. If there is no User Dictionary in the Dictionaries folder, click the New button to create and select one. The default name is User Dictionary, but you can give the user dictionary a different name, and can create more than one if your work requires more than one specialized vocabulary. Only one of these may be selected at a time though.
The disappearing files problem could be caused by renaming or moving the file in the Finder while it was open in AppleWorks.
Regarding your NeoOffice question, moving from AppleWorks is definitly an action to be given serious consideration now or in the not too distant future. While the application currently serves well, that cold change as future versions of the Mac OS arrive and support of the application diminishes.
The current version of NeoOffice is 2.0.3(beta), and although it appears to be stable under the light load I give it, I'd hesitate recommending a full move to any beta application. Some AppleWorks users have adopted Pages for most word processing functions, and continue to use AppleWorks for the things Pages doesn't do. I'll probably follow that route as well, but not until iWork includes at least one of a competent database or spreadsheet component (and preferably contains both).

Barry

    I have lost the icons for Word, Excel, iTunes, etc. from the bottom of my desktop - how do I get them back?

    Easy-these are just aliases. Do a cloverleaf+F/command+F (Find) and they should appear. Either create an alias and drag it to the dock-or there's an "add to Dock" command in the Finder. so click on whichever app you'd like to add to the Dock,  then add to Dock and it should appear there. If something isn't in the Dock that doesn't mean it's gone for good. It's just an alias
    well, hope that helped

  • Add (to dictionary) is grayed out in Word 2008 :o(

    I have Word 2008 for Mac. I love the "add" to dictionary feature in the spell check but in mine, it's GRAYED OUT. Why? How can I enable this? I'm sick of "ignoring" my last name and other words I often use!
    Thanks much!

    Thanks! I found the answer on that website. Here it is:
    You'll need to set up a custom dictionary first. On the word you'd like to add to your custom dictionary, do a right-click or Control+click, select Spelling, and in the Spelling and Grammar dialog click Options. The Spelling and Grammar preferences pane should be displayed. For Custom Dictionaries, click on the Dictionaries button, put a check mark in the Custom Dictionary item box, and OK your way out of there.
    Now you should be able to add any "misspelled" words to your custom dictionary.

  • Dictionary doesn't remember added words (ID2)

    Hi. I like the interactivity of InDesign's dictionary, but there's one huge problem I've experienced since the beginning... the dictionary doesn't remember added words. As I add words in one document, it seems to acknowledge my action; ie, if I add the new word again, it no longer highlights it as misspelt. As far as I can see from my preferences, either with a document open or without a document open, I'm using the default BRT.UDC dictionary. Also, I merge this dictionary into any open document so that it can see (?) it...
    The most annoying thing is that sometimes the dictionary appears to work! But I can't seem to find a hard and fast way of making it work all the time!
    Also, is there a way of seeing what words I have added to the default dictionary. At the moment it appears that there are none... although I can see words that have been added to the dictionary of the open document (ie, a few).
    This appears to be the ONLY area where quark was simpler, easier, more friendly, less techy...!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Yup - added words (gulp! I hope). I have the cursor flashing in a suspect word, hold down the control button and the contextual menu pops up, asking me what I want to do. I choose 'add word'... and hey, presto! Or not, in my case...!

    What do you want to do specifically.  They are two different document formats - one is PDF, the other DOC or DOCX.  In what way do you wish to "add" ad PDF to a word document. You can embed a mini version within a document (copy it and paste it from within the x.doc) but that's a pretty hokey looking solution.
    Oh, its mostly irrelevant if its office 2004,8 or 11 - they all do this more or less the same way.

    You select the printer properties and set the appropriate page size (I think there is a place to set it in PDF Maker too, but not sure). In the printer, this is equivalent to putting the proper paper in the printer.

    Your profile says you have 10.6, so why bother with the original 10.5 OS?
    But to your question, before you erase anything, make a backup of your data for safe keeping and restoration. Having an external hard drive for this purpose is most useful.

  • I have transferred Word files from my PC to my new Mac Book Pro and some of the files cannot be clicked on and opened or even deleted because you can't select them. There are a variety of document files and pdfs etc. Any ideas ?

    I have transferred word files form my PC to my new Mac Book Pro. Some of the word files are feint and will not open as you cant select them. Also you cant delete them either because the cursor wont highlight or select them. Any ideas anyone?

    Have you tried looking at the file in list view in the Finder and seeing if they actually occupy any space? i.e. "Size"? There shouldn't be any problem with Office documents, Adobe pdfs, etc. If they migrated properly - did you use Migration Assistant or some similar utility?

  • Epub doesn't have the words in the right place

    I am using indesign cs6 on windows and this is a fxed epub.  In Dreamweaver I changed css to reflect where I wanted the words to go on page 4. When I go back to epub the words are not in the correct place. this is a children's book and needs to have the words ontop of the image.  Here is the code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
              <head>
                        <title>arobbyroo-4</title>
                        <link href="css/idGeneratedStyles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
              </head>
              <body id="arobbyroo" xml:lang="en-US">
                        <div class="_idGenObjectLayout-1">
                        <div class="Basic-Graphics-Frame _idGenPageitem-1">
                                            <img class="_idGenPageitem-1" src="image/pg4.jpg" alt="" />
                        <div class="mainbody "/>
                          <p class="page04a">Robby the Roo built a canoe.</p>
                             <p class="page04b">with intentions of paddling away..........</p>
              </div>
              </body>
    </html>
    In indesign the words are in the paragraph syle mainbody.  When I first epub this the words are on different pages. So I moved them onto the correct page and put in the css. here is part of the code
    p.page04a {
              position: absolute; font-size: 20px;          font-family: Arial, sans-serif;
              top: 47px; left: 60px; height: 33px; width: 165px;
    p.page04b {

    Hello William,
    Thank you for the question.  It sounds like you would like to delete some songs off of your iPad.  I have a couple of suggestions.
    First, I recommend swiping the individual songs on the album to get the delete option:
    Remove a song that’s been downloaded. Swipe left, then tap Delete.
    If the you are not getting a delete option and song has a cloud icon to the right of it, this indicates the song is being streamed from iTunes in the Cloud.
    You can choose to hide all songs that are not downloaded on to your iPad in Settings:
    Just show music that’s been downloaded from iCloud. Go to Settings > Music, then turn off Show All Music.
    iPad User Guide - iTunes Match
    http://help.apple.com/ipad/7/#/iPad99f373c1
    Alternatively, if the song was purchased from iTunes, you can hide the song by accessing the iTunes Store on the computer:
    To hide your purchases
    Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
    From the Store menu, choose Store > Sign In, and then enter your Apple ID and password.
    Go to the iTunes Store.
    Click Purchased from the Quick Links section on the right side of the iTunes Store.
    Choose a content type by clicking on Music, TV Shows, Apps, or Books from top.
    Hover your cursor over the item you want to hide.
    You will see an "X" either to the right or left top corner of the item.
    Click the "X" to hide that item. A confirmation dialog will appear once you click the "X."
    iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919
    You will need to quit and relaunch the Music app on your iPad after hiding the purchase on your computer before seeing the changes.
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

    Create a Custom Page Size with the same dimensions as your document within a new Joboptions file and then use that new Joboptions file when you convert your square document to PDF.

  • Do Apple or my MacBook Pro have a word program?

    like word perfect for windows...do mac have a word program?

    The included application is called TextEdit.  It is a simple word processor application.
    Microsoft Office can be purchased for the Mac, which includes Microsoft Word. You need Office 2011 for OS X Lion.
    Apple has an office suite called iWork.  It includes an application called Pages.  Pages is also available as a download in the App Store (you want the Mac App Store, not the one for iOS mobile devices.)
    There are free open source office suites that use the same formats as Microsoft Office.
