Did someone send spam through my iinet mail account via my Mini Mac?

I am very annoyed with iinet. They locked me out of my email account with no warning or explanation. All my important mail comes via that account and has done for 6 years. Imagine all the places that need to use my address to contact me - dozens and dozens.
I rang them and they claimed my email account and computer have been 'compromised'. I have a Mini Mac, 10.5.8 and a 2011 Macbook Pro. I use the Mail programme and my messages are deleted from the server immediately.
Is this even possible that my Mac has got a trojan? They have not sent me an iota of proof that spam was sent from my email account or my computer. But they claim their tech department traced the spam mail to my IP address. I just can't believe this.
Their solution is to make me change my password. As I believe the spammers are only spoofing - adding my email address to the 'sent' field - not hacking - I won't do it on principle. This is what iinet wrote. Please advise me how to respond because I am not changing my password if they are just being silly.
I understand that this is frustrating and a bit hard to understand. The processes involved with tracing issues like this are not easy and we have to stop all possible spam or compromises working its way through our network so no damage can be done.
Below is a basic outline of what happens:
1.            Operations Centre (OpCen) discovers spam or a compromise.
2.            OpCen trace the IP back to a username.
3.            The customer’s account is locked and active internet session terminated.
4.            OpCen create a PTS task outline the issue.
5.            CC contact the customer and confirm all threats have been removed.
6.            CC create an ETS work request (WR) advising the steps taken to prevent future incidents.
7.            The WR is reviewed and the customer’s account is unlocked by OpCen.
For whatever reason our OpCen team have traced your IP to your username and have followed our usual procedures to stop this from affecting our network.

Internet Service Providers needs to be forewarned, users frequently get spoofed about spam.  Shutting down their account due to suspected spam only weakens their reputation as an Internet Service Provider.
Spoofing can make legitimate e-mails look like spam simply by editing the reply-to address on your e-mail.
Sadly, spam e-mailers harvest legitimate e-mails by infecting various Windows machines and servers and grabbing addresses off their addressbooks.    People who mass e-mail you for legitimate purposes may actually be the harbingers of this problem because someone on their mass e-mail list may have the spam virus.  The way you can prevent it is:
1. Never publish your genuine e-mail on any website that doesn't securely hide it.  That includes Apple Support Communities postings.  You can edit your Apple Support Community preferences to hide your actual e-mail address in the profile (which I see you've done!).
2. When the recipient of a mass e-mail from a friend, tell them to only use BCC in their future mass e-mails.
3. If sending mass e-mail yourself, do it only from an account you can afford to be bombarded by spam, or be spoofed.
4. Encourage the use of mailing lists that don't publish a person's e-mail, including social sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn.
5. Inform internet service providers that by setting up blacklists, they end up unintentionally making a file whih if compromised on an insecure machine, can backfire, and only create more spam.  Any internet provider blacklisting you is doing just that.

  • Can't send email through my aol mail on my iPad 2 after updating to iOS 7

I had to update m iPad because I was no longer able to work a lot of my apps because they kept telling me that there was an update that I had to do in order to even work my apps!  I was very reluctant to do it in the first place fearing that I would loose a lot of my pics, videos and or more!  Anyway so the other day I sat down and finally did it.  After updating my iPad 2 to the new operating system of iOS 7 now I cannot send emails through my aol mail on my iPad.  I tried putzing with the settings for smtp and to no avail nothing,  I then decided well maybe downloading the aol app would help but still not good enough because it takes up so much room that I had to delete some apps just to get it.  I had since deleted the aol app and am still trying to figure out why I keep getting the message I am getting is incorrect] hen it gives me two options which are option 1) Settings and option 2) Cancel.  I am in need of assistance here because I can receive mail but cannot send it.  Oh and I am able to send mail through my other email addresses on my iPad mail including my me.com and iCloud.com as well as two others but am not able to send through aol.  I am loosing my patience with apple very quickly as one why did I have to update the system and why am I forced to update my apps which I feel is completely ridiculous in the first place.  Everything was fine until I had to do that and now I cannot keep my iPad on for more then an hour when the battery drains so quickly now because I guess it takes up so much unneeded space!  PLEASE HELP ME!

    Hello, PriestessJeanann.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article I would recommend going through when experiencing issues with mail.  The usual fix would be to delete the email account in question and add this account via the preset AOL option.  I would also recommend checking with your email provider for security procedures such as two-step verification as this could cause this issue.

but when i try to send the pictures i've taken it doesnt work.
    any ideas?

    Hello, Teoakley1440.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I see you are experiencing an issue with Yahoo mail on your iPhone and have tried some troubleshooting steps with the issue persisting.  I would need clarification of the exact issue you are experiencing to provide a better answer.  However, there may be some troubleshooting steps that have not been processed in the article below.  I would also check with Yahoo to see if two-step verification is enabled as this can cause issues with mail.

  • IPhone wont send email from a certain mail account

I know the settings are right, but the iPhone wont send mail from one of my mail accounts (hosted by the company i work for, which offers mail hosting as a service, and has hundreds of other iPhone users with the same account settings.)
The progress bar that indicates "sending" zips by suspiciously quickly when I hit Send, but there is no audio confirmation. Then the email is gone - its not in my Sent Items folder, and its not in the Drafts folder and its not in my broom closet.
From what I understand, if one SMTP server isn't available, it should default to the AT&T SMTP server, but it apparently doesn't even get that far, because the phone must think it's sent the message, or it would end up in the Drafts folder (or Outbox, I can't recall), which is what I would normally experience if I had no service at the time I was sending the message. I have two other accounts that work normally on the iPhone. Nothing has been recently changed with the SMTP server in question, which works fine with all my other devices.
    I've tried:
    • deleting the account and re-adding it manually (four times)
    • deleting the account and syncing it with my computer (three times)
    • hard resetting the iPhone
    • ensuring that the primary SMTP server for this account is, in fact, switched to "On" in Settings->Mail, Contacts, and Calendars, <mail account>-->SMTP (which brings me to another question: how do I edit this list? Is it automatically populated by the accounts in my Mail app?
    • screaming from my back porch
    Ideas?
    Email Account type: IMAP
    Authentication type: MD5 with SSL
    Port: 587
    8GB 3G iPhone, Software version 2.2.1

    One thing that might help.
If your primary server is hosted by your company, double check the outgoing settings.
    Host Name:
    Use SSL:
    Authentication:
    Server Port:
If it zips through your primary server without effect, try turning the primary server off and one of the secondary on.
If connected to Edge or 3G, you can use ATT's SMTP server.
If issue still persists, then set up a gmail or yahoo account to test with.
    Both are free email services.
If still fails, then general troubleshooting might help.
Here are a couple of articles from the apple support website that might help out.

  • Unable to receive gmail through apple's mail app 4.3 on Mac Book Pro

I am unable to receive gmail through apple's mail app 4.3, on my MacBook Pro although I can receive my email on the gmail web site. *I can send email through Mail with no problems I just can't receive any e-mail in Mail.* Recently I got a message that my user name or password was incorrect. I made sure the information was correct but still I can't receive any e-mail in Mail. Could somebody please help me?
Here are the settings. Are they correct?
    Account Type: Gmail IMAP
    Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com

I had the same problem. The unlocking mentioned above worked for me. Right now mail.app is downloading the messages.
I've also on other message boards found a link for correct setup: http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/answers/howto_setup_gmail_imap_andmail.app1/
The key here is to go to labs and enable advanced IMAP settings.
I'm not cheering yet if I hover over the folders / labels that are synced I get de message "Unable to open "foldername""

  • Can't send emails on my yahoo mail account. gets stuck in the outbox. tried deleting and reinstalling but it didn't work., can't send emails on my yahoo mail account. gets stuck in the outbox. tried deleting and reinstalling but it didn't work.

every time i try to send an email from my yahoo mail account it gets stuck in the outbox. i have tried reinstalling my email account but it doesnt work

Have you tried setting up your Yahoo account using Mac Mail instead of dealing with web based mail?
It only takes a minute to set this up.
Open Mac Mail. From the menu bar top of your screen click Mail > Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
    Click +
Enter your name, Yahoo user name and password, click Create.
If you'd rather not do that, it would help to tell us which Mac OS X you have installed and which version of Safari in your reply.

  • After installing iOS6.1.1 I can't send massages to an e-mail account

After installing iOS6.1.1 I can't send massages to an e-mail account

Several users have reported this -- here is a long thread: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1006704 verizon email..can't reply to emails says null status:404].
At this point, no one has posted a diagnosis of why this function is no longer working in Firefox 31. Unfortunately, with hundreds of changes in each version, it is difficult to track down without "hands on".
In the meantime, if you need to use Firefox for your Verizon mail, you have the option of reinstalling Firefox 30 (so long as you know there are security implications). See: [[Install an older version of Firefox]].

  • Can't connect to Office 365 mail account via Apple Mail (Exchange)

I recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite, but had this problem before upgrading as well. I have an Office 365 mail account, but cannot sync it via Apple Mail. I went into my Apple Mail accounts and tried connecting my Office 365 account through the Exchange option, but it will not connect. From my knowledge, this is not an uncommon problem but it is very inconvenient. Is there any way to get around the glitch, or anything I should be doing differently? I do know a couple people with Office 365 accounts who have been able to make it work, but they apparently did not do anything differently when setting up their account.

Sometimes this issue is caused by a misconfiguration or incompatibility of the Exchange server, or perhaps by a bug in Mail. If so, you won't be able to resolve it yourself. The fact that your iOS devices may be working well with the same account isn't relevant, because iOS uses a completely different protocol (ActiveSync) to communicate with Exchange servers. By default, OS X Mail uses the EWS protocol.
Each of the following steps has been reported to help with Exchange issues, at least temporarily, in some cases:
    1. Back up all data. Open the Internet Accounts pane in System Preferences and check to make sure you don't have duplicate Exchange accounts. If you do, delete all but one of the duplicates. If there are no duplicates, delete the account and recreate it with the same settings.
    2. Rebuild the affected mailbox.
    3. Reindex messages.
    4. Follow the instructions in this support article to disable autodiscovery. You may need to get configuration details from the server administrator.
    5. In the Keychain Access application, delete the password item for the account. The next time Mail tries to access the account, you'll be prompted for the password. Check the box to save it in the Keychain.
    6. If you've created subfolders of the Exchange inbox, log in to the server through its web interface, move the messages out, and remove the subfolders. The inbox should have no subfolders.
    7. Synchronize with the server using IMAP rather than EWS. This is only possible if IMAP is enabled on the server.
    8. Consider using Outlook instead of Mail to access your Exchange mail.

  • How can I set up my spouse's e-mail account separate from mine on our shared iMac

My wife and I like to keep our e-mail accounts separate, so we don't have to sort through all of it.  We also like to keep our apple accounts seperarte, although we do share an iCloud account for sinking contacts and calanders.
We are new to apple PC's and even had to call find out where to turn our new iMac on.  What is the best way to set this up?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can create a new user for one of you. It's easy to create an user > http://support.apple.com/kb/ph4600
After creating the account, the computer will ask you the user you want to log in every time you start your Mac, so just choose the one you need. After creating the user account, access to this user account and configurate it. Go to System Preferences > iCloud to use iCloud, and open Mail and select File menu (on the menu bar) > Add Account, to add a mail account

  • Is someone trying to send SPAM through one of my servers?

    Hey all.
I had a rather fun start to the week, my boss handed me a couple pages of an email he got that had bounced back from our ISP. Basically it tried to send mail to a "[email protected]" (googled it: apparently people get phishing messages from that address) from my boss' email address.
Normally I'd just kind of shrug it off and say that someone was trying to use our host's mail server as us and couldn't get through, but in the headers something caught my eye:
    X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.1084)
    The original message was received at 2011-06-15 12:19:31 -0400 from postoffice.b.com [10.0.0.1]
    Reporting-MTA: dns; postoffice.b.com
    Received-From-MTA: DNS; postoffice.b.com
Now let me just go ahead and clarify, all our email is handled off-site by the host of our domain name. At most my boss will send and receive his email from Apple Mail. I've had the Mail service on all 3 of our xserves off.
Second, I've set up our own DNS server on one of the xserves. Actually I have two (one for redundancy) but the second has been disabled for a while now pending hardware changes. I use the made up domain of "b.com" for our servers, so if you look under the DNS service and check the "b.com" zone, there are only 3 entries; one for each of the servers. There is no "postoffice.b.com".
Just as well, our network (the greater part of it at least) runs on IP's that begin with 10.0.1.*, not 10.0.0.*. There is no 10.0.0.1 on our network.
I'm over my head on this one, I just want to know if anyone has actually gotten into our systems, and if they have (or even if they haven't), what they're doing and how I can stop it. I've gone ahead and put the full header up on pastebin if someone would like to look at it:
    http://pastebin.com/dPGPyub4
I've replaced my boss' email address with "BOSS EMAIL" and our IP address with "COMPANY IP". I've left the rest untouched.

    Hello Jeff,
I would start with the Received headers. The important one here would be the last Received entry in the header. They're written out in reverse order. So, in this case,
    Received: from User (62.1.248.190.dsl.dyn.forthnet.gr [62.1.248.190]) (authenticated bits=0) by cybergearnetworkfive.com (8.13.6.20060614/8.13.6) with ESMTP id p5FGF7Bl004780; Wed, 15 Jun 2011 16:15:08 GMT
That header appears to be formatted correctly, so it would seem to be the origin of the message. If it weren't formatted correctly, then I would look at the next Received header that appears above it, and so on.
The issue, then, would appear to be that cybergearnetworkfive.com may have an open SMTP relay (allowing SMTP connections from anywhere). So, a computer at 62.1.248.190 appears to be exploiting that security hole by sending out spam using a bogus "From" address.
This appears to be just a run of the mill phishing email that is masquerading as being from your boss' email address.
Harmless strictly from an email security standpoint as long as you aren't "cybergearnetworkfive.com" -- they appear to have a configuration problem allowing SMTP connections from anywhere.
Though from a social engineering standpoint, these can be pretty dangerous.  With our company, we leverage our security and legal team to track down, identify, and prosecute (fraud) persons who masquerade as us.
    Hope this helps a bit.

  • How did someone send an email using my email address to others without my knowledge?

Recently someone said I sent an email out to their friends.  I have a MacBook Pro.  How could this happen?

It is likely that someone else's computer was used, your address was found in their address book and the spammer "spoofed" your email address.

  • Can't send email from my personal pop3 account via my S5.  Receives mail fine.

    Hi,
I have an S5 that I use to receive email from my personal email account (supplied by Primelink).  I can receive email fine, but can't send anything.  My SMTP server is mail.wgtest.com using port 465.  I am using K9 mail as my email app.
I was told by Primelink that it's a Verizon Wireless issue.  Is there any way to respond to my emails from my phone?  I can send via my hotmail account, but then my hotmail sent message folder gets filled up and the reply to address always shows up as my hotmail address, not the wgtest.com address.
How can I fix this problem?
    Thanks in advance!
    Spectre55

    Thanks for the reply.
I have tried using three different email apps and keep getting the message that it can't connect to the server.  I'm using the smtp address of mail.wgtest.com.  As I said, I can receive fine, but Primelink told me that Verizon won't let me send from my primelink account through their system.  They said I may have to use an smtp relaying service, which I've never heard of.

  • I cannot send from one specific BT Mail account but can access folders using IMAP.

    Thunderbird 31.3.0 on WIndows 8.1 64 bit.
I have two email accounts configured into Thunderbird.
Both are BT accounts and have identical configurations.
IMAP is used for reading mail, SMTP for sending mail.
On one I can read folders, delete emails from the Bulk Mail folder, fetch and send mail.
On the other I seem to be able to do everything except send mail.
I can read mail, delete SPAM, but for some reason not send emails.
Both accounts are using "mail.btinternet.com" as the IMAP and SMTP server.
I am using Thunderbird as a back up email client to deal with a very few messages which cause major problems with my main email client which is Windows Live Mail 2012. I have double checked and the mail server details are the same between the two and my WLM client can send emails to the same SMTP server on the same port as Thunderbird fails on.
I know the password is correct because I can connect over IMAP and delete SPAM using Tbird.
The only difference that I can see between the two accounts is that one is "@btinternet.com" and the other is "@talk21.com".
The symptoms - I see the progress bar with "Connected to mail.btinternet.com..." and green all the way across.
Some time later I get a separate warning saying "Login to server mail.btinternet.com failed".
Because of the time delay I am assuming that the session has timed out.
I am also assuming that if the credentials were wrong the rejection would have been immediate (although the delay may be to reduce the effectiveness of brute force attempts to guess the password).
So I know that the IMAP credentials are O.K. - I can access the mailbox.
I know that the SMTP credentials are O.K. - I can send mail from WLM using the same settings.
Further confusion - I know that it worked in the past because I have a test message in my Sent mail from when I first set up Tbird.
    This is all very weird.
Has anyone else seen something similar?
Also, is there a debug option where I can trace the SMTP protocol when the email is being sent?
    Cheers
    LGC

Update: - I sent two separate test messages and saved both the failing emails as Draft to retry after restarting Tbird.
I've just noticed that they are both in a Drafts folder on my mail server.
Not, however, the Drafts area for emails composed using the web mail client but under a separate Folders tree.
I can't send the email with the web mail client, although I can forward it.
So further proof that the IMAP side is working.
