Difference between web server & application server

Hi everybody ,
Pl .forgive me for my ignorance.I can't understand the difference between Application server & web server .
KIndly help me .
Thanks.

A web server basically just copies files over the network using HTTP. It needn't support server-side execution of any kind of application code (except the server itself, of course). Application servers, on the other hand, provide a platform for application development.
In the J2EE world the term "Application server" is usually used to distinguish a fully-fledged server with an EJB container and JMS (such as JBOSS or BEA Weblogic Server) from containers that only implement the web application container part of the J2EE spec (such as Tomcat or BEA Weblogic Express).

  • Difference between web server and servlet container

I can't able to figure out the techincal difference between web server(such as java web server) and servlet containers(such as jakarta-tomcat).If you please let me know then I will be very thankful to you.

The web server serves html pages to browsers that request pages. It can also send images, javascript, flash content, and a few other things. When a request comes into the web server for a servlet or jsp, the web server calls on the Servlet container to do THOSE jobs.
The Servlet container is the execution environment for a jsp or servlet (they are both servlets) to run Java code on the server and do logic.
So you see, the web server spits out static content, where either no logic is involved, or the client's web browser does the logic. The Servlet container is used for applications that execute code, perform logic, connect to databases, etc.
So they work together, but are completely separate logically.

  • Difference between web server and webcontainer

Hai all,As i am new to the servlet technology, I am confused with the terminology of webserver and webcontainer. Can anyone tell me the clear difference between these both?
    Thanks in advance

A web server refers to a server which normally listens at port 80 and serves up html pages, images, etc... The html pages are usually static pages unless they contain JavaScript. An application which uses servlets and jsps requires an application server such as Tomcat, WebSphere, WebLogic, etc.... These application servers include a "web container". Basically the "web container" is software which implements the "servlet contract". If you look at the api documentation for javax.servlet and javax.servlet.http, you will see that the most important objects (e.g. ServletRequest, ServletResponse, Servlet, HttpSession, etc...) are interfaces not classes. The reason for this is that each application server implements its own classes which implement these interfaces.

  • What is the difference between Component,Server,Tool and Software?

    HI,
What is the difference between Component,Server,Tool and Software?
    SHABEER

    Hi
Every individual part that constitutes in making an SAP System is called a COMPONENT.e.g DB instance, Java CI, ABAP CI etc
SERVER is the actual composition of different components of SAP.e.g. a database alongwith can instance would constitue an application server.
TOOLS are the products from different organisations (SAP or Non SAP) that can be used for different functionalities like keeping a check on jobs, monitoring of the system , e.g Tivoli
SOFTWARES are a kind of tool that help you to bring up results from the system in a user acceptable format. These are utilities that act as interfaces between the user and the system.

  • Differences between Weblogic Server and Weblogic Server Suite?

    Hi
What is the differences between Weblogic Server and Weblogic Server Suite, beside licens costs?
    Regards
    /Martin

WebLogic server standard edition, you get the WebLogic with no clustering.
Clustering is available in the WebLogic Enterprise Edition.
The WebLogic Suite also gives you Coherence and JRockit real-time

  • Difference between CR Server XI and Business Objects  Enterprise

Can anybody just tell me in brief what is the Difference between CR Server XI and Business Objects  Enterprise?

    Here's the brief summary:
CR Server is essentially Business Objects Enterprise with the following limitations:
    - Limited to a single server (no clustering)
    - Limited to a maximum of 4 CPUs
    - Limited to the Crystal Reports content type
    - Limited to a maximum of 20 Concurrent Users (or CAL - Concurrent Access License)
    - One CAL can service between 5 and 10 'real people' depending on your usage patterns.
    - No Web Intelligence
    - No Crystal Xcelsius
    - No Dashboarding
    - No Enterprise Performance Management
    - No Data Integrator
It is ideal for a departmental or a small company reporting server.  It includes
    - CAL licensing (BusinessObjects Enterprise doesn't)
    - One copy of CR Developer Edition for every 5 CAL purchased (Report designers are extra with BusinessObjects Enterprise)
    - Live Office for office integration
    - Sharepoint 2003 Portal Integration Kit
    - Web based report administration and consumption
    - Business Views Manager for semantic layer maintenance
I hope this helps - let me know if you have more questions.
    Thanks,
    Blair Wheadon

  • The difference between VTP server and transparent mode on Catalyst Switch.

    Hello
I have a question about the difference between VTP server mode and VTP transparent mode on general catalyst switch.
Basically VTP server mode can create and modify VLAN configuration but  actually there is not any VLAN configuration through running-config, is it true?  When I checked it on Cat3550, certainly there is not VLAN configuration on VTP server mode. But VTP transparent can create VLAN and configuration but does not synchronize with other switch VLAN status. I appreciate any related information and reason of the VTP server mode specification, thank you very much.
    [VTP Transparent mode]
    3550#sh vtp status

    VTP Pruning Mode                : Disabled
    VTP V2 Mode                     : Disabled

    Hi mhiyoshi,
    3550#sh vtp status
    VTP Version                     : 2
    Configuration Revision          : 0
Maximum VLANs supported locally : 1005
Number of existing VLANs        : 27
    VTP Operating Mode              : Transparent
    VTP Domain Name                 :

    *omit
    3550#
    3550#sh run
    Building configuration...
    *omit
    vlan 99
     name TEST-VLAN
The above out put indicates that Vlan is created and then mode changed to transparent. i.e why revision no is 0.
    3550#sh vtp status
    VTP Version                     : 2
    Configuration Revision          : 0
Maximum VLANs supported locally : 1005
Number of existing VLANs        : 27
    VTP Operating Mode              : Server
    VTP Domain Name                 :
    VTP Pruning Mode                : Disabled
    VTP V2 Mode                     : Disabled
    VTP Traps Generation            : Disabled
    *omit
    3550#
    3550#sh run
    Building configuration...
*no VLAN like above configuration on VTP transparent mode.
This indicates that vlan never created in server mode nor learnt from another switch as revision no is 0

  • Difference between SQL SERVER 2008 & SQL SERVER 2012 & SQL SERVER 2014

    Difference between SQL SERVER 2008 & SQL SERVER 2012 & SQL SERVER 2014 ?

What sort of databases do you have OLTP? Data warehouse? What requirements do you have for High Availability?
The main features for SQL 2012/2014, as I see it:
o  Support for window functions, which makes it possible to write fast queries for running totals, sliding windows etc.
o  Columnstore indexes, which can speed up your data warehouse enormously. But of no interest for OLTP. Only writable in SQL 2014.
o  AlwaysOn and Availability Groups, a vastly improve story for high availability and disaster recovery.
o  try_convert/try_cast, you can now easily filter out values from a column which does not convert to a number. A small but essential feature.
o  In memory-OLTP, a new in-memory engine in SQL 2014. This far with very limited feature set, and quite specialised.
Of the points above, the second and third require Enterprise Edition, the first and fourth are in all editions. For the last, I don't think Microsoft has announced anything yet.
There are also new stuff in the BI area, but that's out of my league.
And, oh, there is a new licensing model - which I think is holding more than one customer back.
