Difficult selection - help needed
I'm attaching an image where the client has requested the dark background be made a bright color, #e48da8 for example, yet still have a believable edge from hair to background. I have made a couple of attempts which have fallen short. How can I replace that darkness with a brightish color and do it convincingly, given that the darkness comes into the hair quite a bit, and the edge is feathery?
After selecting as much as you can with the magic wand, open the refine edge dialog ... and after the job done in it, there is a section at the bottom of the dialog "decontaminate colors", select it and adjust the slider. You can find some nice video tutorials on the net about refining edges.
And, for the dark portion of the hair ... I tried it again ... hue/saturation adjustment layer may be more useful than the dodge technique (for there is a blue shine from the original background). Lower the lightness slider a little and apply a mask to the adjustment layer.

i am trying to select my inline graphic after it is added to textflow.

ThanksI think most likely the problem is that you are not passing an explicit operationState. That is the last parameter in EditManager.modifyInlineGraphic, and if it is left out, then TLF will use the current selection as the location of the inline graphic. If you want to modify an inline graphic at a particular location, you should create a SelectionState at that location, and pass that as the operationState.
Suppose the inline is the first thing in the TextFlow. Then you could do this as follows:
var selectionState:SelectionState = new SelectionState(textFlow, 0, 0);
IEditManager(textFlow.interactionManager).modifyInlineGraphic("source", 100, 100, null, selectionState);
Then it should find the inline graphic at the start of the TextFlow, regardless of where the current selection is.
If this does not sound like the problem you are having, please send a code snippet for the event listener where you call to modifyInlineGraphic.

Help needed on installation of Oracle 9i EE on Sun Solaris 8. The problem I met was: we followed the installation guide from the documentation. And we selected the choice "install software only". After it was done successfully, we run Database Configuration Assistant utility to create a database instance. But finally it always tried to create the instance at the root directory ( / ) which doesn't have enough space and then failed. The case was that we have set the enviroment parameters: $ORACLE_BASE = /export/mydata, $ORACLE_HOME = /export/apps/oracle9i. That means it should be installed at /export/mydata, but it didn't. Any help or advice are welcome. Thanks.
SimonI have downloaded Oracle 11G R2 version from Windows and extracted it in Windows and copied it into DVD after extraction in two folders. Now I am mounting that DVD in Solaris 10 installed in my VMware . I made a new directory named as 'installation ' under /export/home/oracle and copied the folders from DVD to 'installation' folder. Now I am entering installation folder and try to do ./runInstaller as 'oracle ' user and getting the error mentioned before.

If you have bad song links in your library, hilite them and hit the delete button. Then locate the folder(s) where your music is located and drag and drop into the large library window in iTunes ( where your tracks show up). This will force the tunes into iTunes. Before you start, check your preferences in iTunes specifically under the"Advanced" tab, general settings. I prefer that the 1st 2 boxes are unchecked. (Keep iTunes Music folder organized & Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library). They are designed to let iTunes manage your library. I prefer to manage it myself. Suit yourself. If there is a way for iTunes to restore broken links other than locating one song at a time I haven't found it yet. (I wish Apple would fix this, as I have used that feature in other apps.) Urgent help needed with un-removable junk mail that froze Mail?
I had 7 junk mails come in this morning, 5 went straight to junk and 2 more I junked.
When I clicked on the Junk folder to empty it, it froze Mail and I can't click on anything, I had to force quit Mail and re-open it. When it re-opens the Junk folder is selected and it is froze, I can't do anything.
I repaired permissions, it did nothing.
I re-booted my computer, on opening Mail the In folder was selected, when I selected Junk, again, it locks up Mail and I can't select them to delete them?
Anyone know how I can delete these Junk mails from my Junk folder without having to open Mail to do it as it would appear this will be the only solution to the problem.Hi Nigel
If you hold the Shift key when opening the mail app, it will start up without any folders selected & no emails showing. Hopefully this will enable you to start Mail ok.
Then from the Mail menus - choose Mailbox-Erase Junk Mail . The problem mail should now be in the trash. If there's nothing you want to retain from the Trash, you should now choose Mailbox- Erase Deleted Messages....
If you need to double-check the Trash for anything you might want to retain, then view the Trash folder first, before using Erase Junk Mail & move anything you wish to keep to another folder.
The shift key starts Mail in a sort of Safe mode. -

I’ve been having a few problems with my Mac Pro 1,1 for a while now. The graphics card appeared to be the cause of the last issue (lines of garbled pixels appearing across the screen), the screen going to black once or twice and not letting me do anything other than a hard reset.
Side note: not long after I bought the machine in 2006 I remember it wouldn’t run The Sims 3 without it having major crashing issues (black screen but sound still playing underneath).
I changed my graphics card about a month ago to the ATI Radeon 5770. Installation was fine and everything seemed to work ok (although, the second DVI connection doesn’t work with either the Apple Cinema HD display, or my HD monitor, so I have one plugged in to DVI 1 and the other in to the mini display port). The other problem with this is that (and this is the only game I have to test it on) is that GTA San Andreas still freezes forcing me in to a hard reset situation. But other video intensive apps (Final Cut Pro for example) works fine.
I used the snow leopard disk to do a disk repair but that found no issues. I repaired the disk permissions as well. This appeared to fix nothing.
I few other issues I’ve had recently:
The Finder crashes.
The computer hangs on a restart / shut down.
USB ports don’t always work on system start. I have to unplug the mouse and/or the keyboard and plug them back in again to get them to work. Some of these are on the back of the tower and others are in the back of the monitor.
Disk drive can’t read burned discs.
When ejecting optical disks the icon will either go semi-transparent and then stay that way (this is usually the case, especially after the disc has been in use).
Other times when I try and eject the disc the disc unmounts, but the tray doesn’t open. Then the disc and the drive itself goes missing from disk utility and can’t be remounted without a hard reset.
The last issue that moved me in to doing a fresh install was Final Cut not working at all. I’ve since reinstalled but the same problems persist - the optical drive not ejecting (but disappearing from the system leaving me unable to do anything other than a hard reset to get it back). This causes obvious problems when I’m installing multi-disk systems.
After I restarted, before I did anything else with it, I asked it to run system update which it did and found updates. I downloaded and installed these and then it restarted. It shut down fine, and appeared to start up fine. But then the Finder crashed and while the mouse cursor moved around, the keyboard wouldn’t input any commands and I couldn’t actually click on anything - another hard reset.
I’m starting to get to the end of my tether with my “superior” mac experience. I know it’s easy to suggest it must be the graphics card causing this, but some of these issues have happened in the past, just not as frequent as now, so I’m hoping there are some ideas that go above the “change graphics card” idea. Of course, I am open to this being the cause.
I’ve ran Onyx & Rember and both have been successful.
Any ideas you wonderful lot?
While I imagine the obvious answer is "take it to a repair centre" this isn't an easy option where I live as all official Apple stores (i.e. not premium resellers) are quite a distance.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Help Needed.. Creating custom calendar problems
I am trying to create a calendar like this

and so on.. except that there is a small login inside for day when it is Thursday. One week Shift 'A' works and the next week Shift 'B' works..

As a guess, I would say that your code only inserts rows for Wednesdays. TO_CHAR(date, 'DAY') returns a string padded with spaces to the length of the longest day name, in English, that is Wednesday (9 characters).

Help need my mac pro for school..it has Grey screen..spinning wheel...
I think I have mountain lion OS X....I have done I think almost every suggestion I've seen in discussion boards.
Boot in recovery repaired disk...ok...repair disk permission...all repaired but one warning...I've tried to reinstall lion (without losing data) and it Got all the way to one minute to be done and then the time change back two hours and kept doing this all night long. I haven't done a back up due to no external for time machine.
I hope someone can please help me I've been going crazy for a week now trying to figure this out. I use my computer for school and I'm currently very behind from in my school work thank you

Try holding the Shift key while your Mac is starting to start into safe mode. Then, after starting in safe mode, open Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type /Library/StartupItems. Then, empty this folder and restart the Mac.
If your Mac starts after doing this, it was a problem with a third-party app that starts automatically when you turn on the computer. It won't start automatically anymore after doing that
