Difficulties importing .dmp on Ubuntu 8.04

Hi, I currently have a .dmp file which I am trying to import using the imp tool. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get this working correctly. Here is an example of how I have attempted to invoke this tool, and the resulting error:
jacob@jacob-laptop:/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin$ ./imp file=/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/admin/XE/dpdump/artimo.dmp system/password touser=MAINDB_ARTIMO full=Y
Message 100 not found; No message file for product=RDBMS, facility=IMP: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Fri Jun 5 14:07:23 2009

Invalid format of Import utility name
Verify that ORACLE_HOME is properly set
Import terminated unsuccessfully
IMP-00000: Message 0 not found; No message file for product=RDBMS, facility=IMP
I get this error message for any set of parameters I pass to imp. I also get similar errors when trying to use impdp.
I also noticed that there is a script oracle_env.sh in that same directory which appears to set up the necessary environment variables. After invoking this script, I can confirm that ORACLE_HOME is set up correctly, but the results are exactly the same.
If anyone has any idea what the problem might be, and could let me know the best way to resolve it, I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know. Thanks,
Jake

For me, the following error occurs:
rafael@rafael:/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin$ ./oracle_env.sh

Thanks,

Import has a lot of options, so it depends on what you want to do.
C:\> imp help=y
will show you all possible options. An example of full import :
C:\> imp <username>/<password>@<TNS alias> file=<DMP file> full=y log=<LOG file>

You do not.
.dmp files are created from our Export and Data Pump database utilities and are proprietary files. You use the corresponding Import (or Data Pump) utility to import the data.

I tried reinstalling imp.exe and exp.exe using the Oracle Universal Installer. I checked the import/export utility, but the OUI removed THE ENTIRE developer suite ;-(
So, I decided reinstalling the Oracle and the developer suite from scratch! The installation was ok and I could see the imp.exe working fine during the repository building.
I also did a lot of experiments and some results follows:
I can export and import an application system if I use the SAME user to export and import the .dmp file;
I can import a .dat file exported by another user sometimes…
But, my main trouble still exists: I can’t import .dmp or .dat files from another user that used exp.exe 8.xxx.
The symptom when I try this last option is the “freezing” of imp.exe like the follow example:
“Import: Release 10.1.0.4.2 - Production on Sßb Fev 18 21:15:51 2006

. . importando table "XTSYS_RM$REPOSITORIES" 1 linhas importadas
. . importando table "XTSYS_TABS_EXPORTED" 14 linhas importadas”
The imp.exe always freezes at xtsys_tabs_exported…
Any ideas?

I have problem with importing dmp database with EE8MSWIN1250 to AL32UTF8 (XE)
I've tried to import my database dump with settings NLS_LANG=POLISH_POLAND.AL32UTF8 but it didn't work
I had

Column 3 16-WRZ-2002:00:00:00
so I exported my database with NLS_LANG=POLISH_POLAND.AL32UTF8 and next I tried to import this dump but it still didn't work.
Anybody knows how to import dump database ??

It isn't correct approach. Column size is one of database constraints and you compromised it, so beware.
Correct approach is modifying columns to apply char length semantics, it means you should use following construct
alter table tablename modify columnname varchar2(10 CHAR)
In your code replace your execute immediate line with:
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER TABLE ' || tn || ' MODIFY ' || cn || ' VARCHAR2(' || crec.data_length || ' CHAR )';
Look at this example:
This is your original table
SQL>
SQL> create table T2( c varchar2(10 byte) );
Tabulka vytvořena.
SQL>
SQL> insert into T2 values ('0123456789');
1 řádka vytvořena.
SQL> insert into T2 values ('0123456789 few more');
insert into T2 values ('0123456789 few more')
CHYBA na řádku 1:
ORA-12899: value too large for column "MIGR"."T2"."C" (actual: 19, maximum: 10)
values longer then 10 characters are not allowed, it was your constraint, and now your modification
SQL>
SQL> alter table T2 modify c varchar2(20); -- 2*10
Tabulka změněna.
SQL> insert into T2 values ('+ěščřžýýáí');
1 řádka vytvořena.
You solved the problem, you shoud be praised
SQL> insert into T2 values ('0123456789 few more');
1 řádka vytvořena.
But, you compromised your data model
SQL>
SQL> rem correct approach
SQL>
SQL> delete from T2 where length(c)>10;
1 řádka vymazána.
This solve both problems, and constraint is still valid
SQL>
SQL> alter table T2 modify c varchar2(10 char);
Tabulka změněna.
SQL>
SQL> insert into T2 values ('+ěščřžýýáí');
1 řádka vytvořena.
SQL> insert into T2 values ('0123456789 few more');
insert into T2 values ('0123456789 few more')
CHYBA na řádku 1:
ORA-12899: value too large for column "MIGR"."T2"."C" (actual: 19, maximum: 10)

• Reg import dmp file.

hi friends
what is the command to import DMP file in Oracle 10g database.
how to import this file in particular schema..
pls. help..

Prior to import you must have below requirement,
1. Directory created on DB where you have your dump file, you must have priviledge on this directory.
2. dump file on above mentioned directory.
3 use imp if you have export your dump with exp command , use impdp if have exported your dmp file using impdp.
4. Also you must have correct priviledge on exp,expdp utilities.
try to run 'impdp help=y' on your putty, it will open help for impdp.
hope it will help you in some extend.

• Help to import .dmp file to APEX

Hi All,
I have a question about export and import .dmp file to APEX.
I'm working on a data mining application based on database 11g. I managed to export the data mining model to a .dmp file using oracle data miner (ODM). now I wanna to know how to import this dmp file to the online schema (for example the free apex hosting). I used DBMS_DATA_MINING.EXPORT_MODEL and DBMS_DATA_MINING.IMPORT_MODEL and it's work in my computer.
thanks

Hello <unknown user>,
In short : you can't import a dmp file into apex.oracle.com.
That's because you need the imp utility (and the corresponding roles/rights).
You can create sql scripts for the DML and DDL and upload and run those.

By file you mean a text file or something like that? If yes than the answer would be no, AFAIK its not possible to do so. Why not you get the export from the correct version and than retry import?

Good Afternoon,

Also i didn't understand the error. When he is giving the dump file name why the error is like IMP-00002: failed to open 30-06-2008.dmp for read ?lets suppose Server A:- you have 8i
and 8i database tns string is : to_8i
and Target server B- you have 11gRx
and here you have 11g installed binaries. You should have tns entries of to_8i in tnsnames.ora file of 11g home
now from 11g, connect as
$exp system/****@to_8i <your commands>
So it uses binaries of 11g, But export of database performed from 8i database.
Hope you understood. You should raise an another thread, ;-)
