DIGITAL WORKFLOW -help

Hi out there,
I have a Nikon D200 camera,Photoshop CS2 and WIndows.
Now in my camera settings i take photos as Raw + Jpeg fine, my camera doesn't have TIFF.
My photos are for printing -medium to large- and web.
I am kind of new to the digital thing...
I have been reading, asking, and wondering about digital workflow, i know it's a personal business but i am a little lost in there....but i don't want to spend most of my time doing this, now that i spend half on the computer!
Now this is what i do,
does it make sense?any suggestions?any additions as to bits, resolution, etc?
1.CONVERT RAW INTO DNG (directly from camera if possible) USING DNG CONVERTER.(DELETE RAW) STORE
2. MAKE CHANGES FROM THE DNG FILE IN ACR, SAVE AS DNG, NEW FILE.
3.IF MAKE FURTHER CHANGES WITH PHOTOSHOP, SAVE CHANGES AS a.PSD (STORE AND USE FOR WEB) AND b.AS JPEG (STORE AND USE FOR PRINT)
4.MAKE CONTACT SHEETS, GALLERY, ETC
I don't have Lightroom, is it worth getting into more programs?
Am questioning why i set Jpeg copy in my camera...
Thanks.
Jazzy from Spain

> 1.CONVERT RAW INTO DNG (directly from camera if possible) USING DNG CONVERTER.(DELETE RAW) STORE
Directly from the camera is not suggested ... leastwise, some are mentioning problems with file integrity or nor being able to see the files, but YMMV. Better, would be to use a card reader. DNG raw files are great if you want to keep your ACR settings within the file itself (as opposed to a sidecar XMP file). My own preference is to convert to DNG and delete the original, but others aren't as comfortable with deleting the original.
2. MAKE CHANGES FROM THE DNG FILE IN ACR, SAVE AS DNG, NEW FILE.
ACR adjustments are non-destructive ... no need to save a new file.
3.IF MAKE FURTHER CHANGES WITH PHOTOSHOP, SAVE CHANGES AS a.PSD (STORE AND USE FOR WEB) AND b.AS JPEG (STORE AND USE FOR PRINT)
Keep your preferred color space with the (a) PSD file, and you can (b) convert to sRGB for saving the JPEG for web presentation.
As for your suggested workflow, you do not mention your preferred color space. It should of course be sRGB for the web, but your camera is capable of many more colors than sRGB can accommodate. For printing I would suggest you at least use AdobeRGB.
HTH & cheerios :)

No. DV is not 1920x1080. It is 720x576.
will i lose any quality?
Yes...if you use those settings. Well, if FCP even lets you.
or should i cut it all in a prores sequence
Yes....cut in a ProRes sequence.

• Digital Signatures Help Requested

I looked through the forums and there was one thread not too long ago that talked about digital signatures but didn't seem to focus on this particular problem, so I figured I'd start a new one hoping someone would have some advice.
We receive a document that is digitally signed by our client. We view the PDF in the full version of Acrobat and have added these users as Trusted Users (in managed trusted identities).
We Verify the Signatures that were added to the document and see the digital signatures at the bottom of the document but there's one thing that's not showing up and that's the actual "signature" or "signed signature" of the person. We only see a typed out version of their name.
We've spoken to our client and they maintain that we should be viewing the "signed signature" and we need to figure it out.
When I check the Signature Properties, it tells me that their signatures were created using "Entrust.PPKEF". Could this be the problem?
As much as I'm reading up on Digital Signatures, it's my belief that we don't need to purchase any other software in order to view these properly. Am I mistaken.
Any help would sure be appreciated.

Hi Paul,
Are you expecting a "wet ink" type of signature? That is, an image in the signature field that is a copy of a signature someone created with pen and paper? If that's what you really need then maybe a digital signature workflow is not what you should require from your client. However, in many respects a digital signature (at least in the electronic world) is a much more powerful tool then a wet ink facsimile.
In this day and age, anyone could grab an image of a wet ink signature, crop it and use it apply it to a document as if they were the original signer. In others words, in the electronic world a wet ink signature is not very secure. However, a digital signature cryptographically binds the signer to the document. As long as the digital ID used to create the digital signature comes from a trusted third party (i.e. a certificate authority that vettes the identity of the individual before they issue the digital ID) then you are get two things from the digital signature. One is document integrity (you will know if the document has been altered post signing), and the other is non-repudiation (the signer cannot deny that they were the person that applied the digital signature). If you are accepting digital IDs (it's the "manage trusted identities" thing you mentioned) issued by a certificate authority that does not vette the identity of the signer then you have to be a bit more leery of trusting the signer.
I don't know if the Entrust signature method has the ability to add a custome appearance that includes the wet ink facsimile, but if it does, your client could create a digital signature whose appearance looks like a wet ink signature. However, the bottom line is the lack of a wet ink facsimile is not a cause of concern when it comes to digital signatures in PDF files.

• Canon 20D workflow help

HELP! i have a new canon 20d, my first digital SLR. i love the camera, but am completely perplexed by my workflow situation. i have Photoshop, iphoto, and the software that came with the 20d. i use a card reader to transfer images to my mac.
does anyone have a simple, efficient process for saving/editing/archiving the raws and jpegs?
in other words, how do i download from the card reader, save both raw photos and jpegs and then edit? what workflow works best for you?
so far, since i can't figure out which programs i should be using, i've defaulted to iphoto. i dowload directly into iphoto and have been editing my jpegs using iphoto. but cannot figure out the best way to access the raw photos and archive them onto cd's/dvd's. it took me a long time to even figure out where the raws were stored. (was able to do this with some helpful hints from another kind user on this forum.)
i found the raws in some 'originals' folders in my picture photo/iphoto library folder but the thumbnails are blank images. i tried to drag them into photoshop hoping i could view and save the raws there, then backup to a disc, but it did not recognize the type of file. so, right now, none of my photos are backed up onto cd's/dvd's as i don't know the best way to do this, and am unsure as to whether saving the raws that i found in the originals folders even makes sense if photo shop doesn't recognize them.
also,
i still have some photos on the original cards..so i can theoretically start the process fresh, if anyone thinks i should start from scratch...
i could really use help with the basics:
ie. once i've taken the photos, what do i do next? how should i set up my program preferences, which programs are best to use, how can i easily archive, etc.
if i haven't provided enough info, just let me know.
thanks!

I've been looking into this exact scenario (before purchasing FCE). A videographer friend of mine told me about a free software package called MPEG Streamclip to transcode the video to pretty much anything else, since the h.264 is apparently terrible to work with!
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
I have NOT sued it yet, but my friend suggested I look at it because he uses it as well. He's a Final Cut Pro guy, but I'm guessing that this will work in FCE too? let me know what you find out. I'm on the fence of buying FCE!

• Viewing Aperture library items in iPhoto as workflow help

I wanted to view my Aperture library jpegs in iPhoto without opening Aperture. The reason for this is to use iPhoto to review my pictures and to open in an external editor from iPhoto. We use Fireworks in designing web sites and newsletters. I did not want to save to another folder which takes up space. The workflow requires the use of Fireworks, crop out what we need from or graphics/pictures and place in the final work for Dreamweaver.
I opened the Aperture library content and dragged the image folders to iPhoto. It did take the pictures and gave a notice for the files that were not imported. These were jpeg files, not the raw. Advantage is that the Aperture library is now the one resource for our workflow. I can switch from FireWorks to Photoshop when needed. We did not try this with the Raw files, but I suppose that could be done too. Opening the raw in PS would be helpful to some workflows.
I thought this was a good tip. It has saved us quite a bit of time and is easy to use.

I'm not sure I understand. If you're using iPhoto to review and edit jpg files you've pretty much nuked any reason to use Aperture at all. It also means that edited copies of your images are not tracked as versions and aren't backed up in the vault. Can you explain a little more what your workflow is?
I'm do not want versions tracked in Aperture in this case. I want samples of textures or parts of image available for use in designing other graphics. We are in the graphics studio and want to open files in FireWorks, crop/marque out parts and paste to another FireWorks file. I have iPhoto set up to open externally in Fireworks. Think of it as needing 'clip art' out of picture in the library.
What we are doing is designing banners for web sites and newsletters. I might want a horizon/sunset only as a background to blend into the banner. I have iPhoto open already along with Fireworks and Dreamweaver. No need to have Aperture or any other program open now. iPhoto has the jpegs..... click to open in FireWorks, marque, copy and past the parts I want into the banner design.
Before that I had to have a resource folder of jpegs. The Aperture library can now store jpegs and access them from iPhoto. I have to hunt quickly through hundreds of image we have store for each texture and different subjects for these banner creations.
Hope this helps. We just need small parts of any given image. This was a good solution. I'm sure there are others too.

• Digital signature help

I have a created a PDF in Acrobat 8.0 that requires multiple digital signatures. I am emailing the file to the people and asking for their digital signature. When I try to save the file with Person1's signature to a file with Person's2 digital signature, it deletes Person's1 signature and inserts Person2's signature. How can I save the file so both signatures are retained?
I need help ASAP. It is driving me crazy.

Hi,
You can't merge signed files because it modifies the PDF layer which would break the signature. One of the limitations of digital signatures is they are serial operations, that is one signature follows the previous signature. You cannot do this in parallel and merger the contents into one file. You could put the multiple files into a single Package (later renamed to Portfolio in Acrobat 9) file, but each signed copy would still be a stand alone file attachment within the Package.
The bottom line is, if you really need all of the different digital signatures in the same PDF file you need to send it to the first recipient, have them sign it, and then forward the file to the next recipient (or back to you).

• BPM Workflow Help Needed Urgently please

Hi All,
We are working on a BPM workflow
User A submits the request which goes to User B for review if rejected by user B the process stops but if approved then the amount is calculated using a decision table and based on the amount it will be routed to the respective users.
I did it till BPM part and created rules in the BRM part as well but dont know how to call this BRM in BPM.
Please help me its very very urgent.
Thanks in advance

Refer step 25 of this document to see how to create a web-service for your BRM ruleset.
Once the web service is ready, it can be imported anywhere for use.
1. In your BPM, right-click on the 'WSDL' folder and select 'Import WSDL'. You can import your BRM web-service here.
2. Then place an automated activity in your BPM process design and set the BRM service as the Service Reference property of the Automated activity.
3. Once this is done, you will see the Condition and Action values of your BRM decision table in the Input and Output mapping of the Automated Activity.
4. Map the values of BPM process context to the BRM condition values in the 'Input Mapping' and get the corresponding output in Output mapping (Action Values of decision table).
Refer step 12 in this document to see how to import a WSDL in your BPM Process.
Hope this helps.

• File naming issue/workflow help needed...

I shoot weddings and am continually frustrated with A2's file naming. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated as it's killing my workflow.
THE GOOD: I import the images with the file name I want and the metadata I want. I then edit out, deleting bad images and leaving borderline images (as outtakes) in the project while putting my selects together for the client in a smart album. I put the selects in a smart album based on their rating and keywords. The selects are not sequential, so I "select all" and make "batch change" putting them in sequence.
THE BAD: Here is where I always encounter my first problem. Any images I have have worked on (in Photoshop) for my website now have different names. So when I export all in the album, the worked-on versions don't fit in sequentially. And some stacks have the edited image on top, and others do not.
The other problem is when a bride places an order. I find the corresponding file and externally edit it. It now resides in the smart album with a different name than all the files around it. I put the print size in the exported version name and I have to open the dialog box for every single image and re-type the size in the custom name space. I have an order with 295 different images and it's killing me. The other problem is when the bride goes to re-order a print she has, the number on the back has no connection to the numbers on my site or the smart album.
I find I'm going back to Photomechanic more often just to organize and name images because it actually changes the name of the file instead of "masking" it as A2 seems to do.
Is there a way to keep A2 from doing this and how do I get the adjusted image to be the pick of the stack?
Thanks-Kevin

I happily paid the 20 bucks for 'A Better Finder Renamer' and was able to have it batch rename RAW files to my needs. It uses simple Boolean logic to cut or add to a file name and can read time stamps from the file.

• Set up Lightroom for my workflow - Help Please!!

Hi Guys,
(PC/Win XP pro/Lightroom 1.3/PS CS3 running on large PC with plenty of everything!! - Printing on 7880 Epson through qimage)
I have been working on Bridge/CS3 and want to set uplightroom for the following workflow (easy in Bridge but I cant seem to figure it out in LR).
I want all raw images to reside in a folder on HDD (say jane smith wedding). (that bit is easy- even I could manage that!)I want all work files (Xmp or whatever) and all developed images (low/high res) to reside in the same folder (there was a simple command in bridge - export to same location - that could be set as default but I cannot find in LR.)
I also need to export a jpeg crop ( I cant find a crop tool for inches!!)of my corrected image at say 10x7@ 240dpi for inkjet printing through Qimage and a second jpeg say @ 70dpi with copyright mark for a slideshow in proshow gold.(is there a setting for "save in same location with work files). So I would end up with a folder for example R/jane smith wedd with subfolders develops and previews. This folder should contain ALL workfiles so when i archive ALL files go with it. ( also I would be able to open the raws with corrections applied on a home computer with CS3 but not lightroom running.)
I admit Im thick!!
Any help would be really appreciated, nigel
PS: Memo to Adobe: What were you thinking of with no way to save contact sheets.......? Also no way to export music with the slideshow......?

1. You need to turn on "automatically write XMP" in preferences. Then the settings data will be saved as you make changes in LR and CS3 can use these settings to open images. You could also convert to DNG for the same end result.
2, If you want your exports in the same folder then just select that folder in the export dialogue. You also have the option of creating a sub folder to store the exports in. It doesn't have a save to same location default but it's not such a pain to pick a folder. I actually send my edits to a different drive just in case of corruption.
3. There's no cropping done by the crop tool so you can't assign a dpi to it. Crop it the way you like it (you can set an aspect ratio if you like. Nothing happens until you export and that's where you select dpi, watermarking etc for output files. In the export dialogue just enter the settings you want. You can also save several sets of output settings for quick retreival later on.
4. To save contact sheets install a free PDF printer and just print the contact sheets to it. Mind you because Adobe wont let you select sRGB as an output space and insists on Pro Photo RGG (don't get me started...) the colours will be washed out and horrible. You can also save your contact sheet settings so redoing it really isn't that big of a deal. Printing and saving contact sheets worked really well up to 1.1 after that Adobe broke it and it's the thing I miss the most. All they need to do is allow us to select an output colour space when using printer managed printing so I can have sRGB printing back.
Don't know about the slide show thing, sorry.
Hope this helps

• Slide Presentation Workflow Help

I need to put together a slide presentation and have not done this before.
Can anyone help with details regarding a workflow and other items?
1. For instance, can I gather up all my images in Aperture, move these in some manner that retains the resolution and put them in Keynote?
2. Is there a minimum resolution for images looking good for projection on a screen?
3. Is there a way to see this in some manner as an "actual size" or otherwise check this globally?
4. Is there a way to manually do a slideshow in Aperture instead of Keynote?
Any other technical help would be greatly appreciated.
I will be working on my MacPro where my Aperture Library resides but I will be presenting on the MacBookPro laptop.
Also, I am new to Mac.
Thanks,
Jon

Hi Neil.
The images are in all sorts of formats I would imagine. They are probably in psd, jpeg, tiff, png and other formats.
I was mentioning png because my understanding is that along with tiff it is a lossless format. This is good for saving images that you are editing (which I may do in this case). Perhaps I am mistaken here but this is the reason for the post.
The guy that is handling this is new in his job. So, I am trying to make sure I get this correct.
I am not sure about the question about a second macbook (perhaps I have confused you somewhere)? I have a MacPro (this is what I am working on because the APERTURE DATABASE) is on this computer. I may have to work on the presentation while on the road with the MacBookPro - but I definitely will have to give the presentation on the MacBookPro.
My assumption is that the issue here is two-fold. 1. If I need images before, during or after the presentation I will have to do some kind of access of the other images not in the presentation by booting off an external drive with the original Aperture Database. 2. As I will be (likely) both exporting the images out of Aperture /and/ transferring a Keynote (or Aperture) presentation file to another machine - I would like to know if there are any issues to be careful about. For instance, when saving to pdf for a manually forwarded presentation - one needs to check some Preference Setting to make sure that the presentation opens in full screen, otherwise it opens in preview mode.
1. Can you help with any of the above questions?
2. Is it necessary for me to bring my own connection?
3. Is it necessary for me to know the projectors aspect ration and if so for what reason?
4. Why do you suggest looking at the images on my screen to see if there is a difference between a 10 and a 12 setting? I have a 13" screen and this comparison seems like it would not hold up when projected over 30 feet or whatever.
Also, I don't understand your reference to "sooner or later the images are going to get cropped".
Have we determined that you cannot do a manually forwarded presentation in Aperture?
Thanks.

• Workflow help needed, transitioning from iPhoto/iPhoto Library Manager

HI all, I am using latest Aperture, iPhoto, and 10.6.3 on lan connected macs and need some help setting up a workflow/libraries that represent some sanity amid the tens of thousands of photos that I have. Before getting Aperture3, i was using iPhoto and iPhoto Library Manager to work between an imac and an mbp; i would create a temp library to travel with on the mbp and then when I returned to the office I would merge the updated temp lib with the master lib housed on a huge external drive hanging off the imac. Using iPhoto Library Manager this is a lot of work and very slow indeed.
So with my new install of Aperture3, I am sure there is a better way, I just have not found a coherent tut that explains what I should be doing under these circumstances. I see that I can import iPhoto libraries, and that I can also use referenced files to get things into Aperture no matter where they are, or I can ??? Really confused on all the options.
Ideally, I think what we all want is a cloud like repository for all photos where users could check in and check out photos and have all the metadata preserved, but I guess they also want ice water down under, and haven't gotten that yet either.
Short of the above fairytale, what can I do? I do expect to have another mbp in the field soon, so that will be two machines/users that will need to pull things out of a master repository and check back in updated files as well as add new files to the collective.
Thoughts? Thx.

1) Import my one massive iPhoto Library into Aperture 3 - but do I use referenced or embedded options? Is there any advantage to leaving everything in iPhoto and just referencing from Aperture? Or do I get everything into Aperture and then just blow away iPhoto?
I see no reason to leave the files in iPhoto. If you agree you can do one of two things: either move them elsewhere and reference them or manage them in Aperture. Many folks recommend referencing them, but it's a choice only you can make.
I see no reason to continue with iPhoto.
2) In Aperture, I can export a set of projects from the main repository into a "traveling library", say when I take the MBP out on assignment,
Correct: File -> Export Project as New Library
and then when I return, I just import that library back and the updates I made on the road will get integrated with the whole again? If so, that's worth the price of admission!
Correct.

• Workflow Help - Using PRE function

Hi,
I need to create a workflow on "when modified record saved" trigger event using PRE function. I am currently using this syntax :
(FieldValue('<IndexedPick0>')='Central') AND (FieldValue('<SalesStage>')='Qualified') OR (FieldValue('<SalesStage>')= 'Approach') OR (FieldValue('<SalesStage>')= 'Quote') OR (FieldValue('<SalesStage>')='Negotiation')
What we want this workflow to do is to send an email only when a sales stage is modified or changed to the values above in the syntax, not anything else on the opportunity page.
Waiting for a response.
Thanks in advance
Ahmed

Hi !
Try this :
*[<IndexedPick0>] = 'Central' AND [<SalesStage>] <> PRE('<SalesStage>') AND ([<SalesStage>] = 'Qualified' OR [<SalesStage>] = 'Approach' OR [<SalesStage>] = 'Quote' OR [<SalesStage>] = 'Negotiation')*
This will trigger only when salestage is modified to 1 of the 4 stages and indexedpick0 = 'Central'.
Hope this will help, feel free to ask more !

• WorkFlow Help for BID Acceptance

Hello Experts,
I am having an issue with SRM standard workflow for BID acceptance. The workflows I am referring are these.
WS79000010 – Without approval,
WS79000002 – One-step approval
We have implemented WS79000010 – Without approval, and we want to implement a custom workflow for bid acceptance to send some notifications for some business reasons.
When I accept a BID(BUS2202), and when I check the event trace in "SWEL" tcode, there is an event with object type BUS2200 and an object GUID. But when I check the GUID in BBP_PD, the guid is actually linked to BUS2202 which is actually what i processed.
I am guessing there is a system issue and I need your help to rectify this. Is there any OSS message which I was not able to find?
If this is a standard behaviour, then please help me to understand why this is happening and how to go about
Advance thanks
Vijay.

Hi,
The workflows (WS79000010 – Without approval,WS79000002 – One-step approval)you mentioned are for BID approval.i.e as soon as the bidder created a Bid in the system for a Bid invitation, these workflows should get triggered.
The OBJECT TYPE for Bid invitation is BUS2200 while for Bid/Quotation is BUS2202.So what you see in SWEL tcode if the event trace for the BID INVITATION (BUS2200) workflow which you might have aslo activated in your system.
Please check again in tcode SWE2 whether the event linkage is active for the Workflows WS79000010 and WS79000002 after which they should get triggered on the event of BID creation.
