Dimensional table exceeds ?

hi friends,
what is the rule for dimension and fact table?
is there any condition like deminsion table >15% of fact table. if the dimension table exceeds the fact table what can i do. how can i eliminate this effect.what scenerio we will get all this type of situations.

Hi,
We should define as many dimensions as possible and we have to take care that no single dimension crosses more than 20% of the fact table size.
High cardinality: This means that the dimension is to have a large number of instances (that is, a high cardinality). This information is used to carry out optimizations on a physical level in depending on the database platform. Different index types are used than is normally the case.
A general rule is that a dimension has a high cardinality when the number of dimension entries is at least 20% of the fact table entries. If you are unsure, do not select a dimension having high cardinality. In other words it means the number of unique combination of values in an infocube dimension is very high. One of the reasons for this is the grouping of characteristics that are not related in one dimension.

    I assume you are not so familiar with databases, are you?
    First I want to comment your previous post:
    well I have a table for a product that contains, say different data for the product, i.e. the date of the test, who is responsible for the test, where it was performed. Also, linked to the date (I guess it is the primary key), there are also some data related. so in my table in the database, next to the date, there is a "+"-sign, so I can open up the page of all the data related to the date.
    Well, did you create this database on your own? So you must have created two tables (table one with fields Datum, Responsible & Cost and table two with fields Place1, Place2, Place3 & Place4). Then you must have dragged on field from one table to another field in the other table in the "Relations" view of access. Doing so, you created a relation. Due to this, access now knows how this date is related and displays the "+"-sign. You can not assume that the date is the primary key.
    In fact you do not have a "2D" table, but just different datasets from two tables connected to each other. This connection is created by relations.
    So, if I know would like to create a new table in my program (each product has its own table, so a new product=a new table), I would also like to create this "data" sheet that is connected to the data. Bu how do I do that?
    I can easily just create a new table (i.e. a new product), just using the "DB Tools Create Table.vi". But I guess it is when I actually want to add the data to the database, where I create the "data" sheet? Using the "DB Tools Execute Query" and a SQL statement with INSERT INTO, is that the way to go?
    As mentioned before, this "datasheet" is just a dataset from a second table which is made displayable by the relation. So if you're question is "how to create a relation using LV", you are quite on the right way. First create two tables one of which has to contain a field where the primary key from the other table is linked to. Then you have to set a PK in one table (using SQL statements) and then build the relation (also using SQL statements). I can't tell you, if you have to define the foreign key in the second table too.
    Have a look at the MS-Access help on how to assign relations and how to define primary keys. There may be something to take care off. Basically standard SQL should do - but using MS you never know .
    As this is somehow complicated, I always create the database structure in MS Access and that's it - afterwards all is done programatically (write and read data). Usually I don't open the database again with Access unless there is a special task.

    I am working on Oracle Business Intelligence 10.1.3.2.1 . We have a requirement to show one report in the Pivot layout.
    But it throws one error: "Maximum number of allowed pages in Pivot Table exceeded (Configured Limit: 1000) "
    So I have modified the Instanceconfig.xml with the following piece of code:

    The number of records is 30 398. In another report the amount is much higher than this number of records and bring it with no problem.
    Can anyone please look into this Issue.

  • Maximum number of allowed pages in Pivot Table exceeded Configured Limit:

    When trying to create Calculated Item on Pivot table Page section Item like Division dim the calculated item is 'All' -> sum * and Customer again the calculated item is 'All -> sum * . it performs the first calculation (for division) but in the next one it gives the error
    "Maximum number of allowed pages in Pivot Table exceeded (Configured Limit: 1000)."

    I am trying to Creat a UserDefined Field in Marketig document OPOR Table through the script. then the warning  "Total rowsize for table exceeds the maximum number of bytes per row (8060). " is occuring ,and transcation rollback. how can i solve the problem.

    You have three ways to deal with this:
    1) make you user field smaller.
    2) check all other UDF in that table, and if you find one that your not using, delte it.
    3) Somebody told me that SQL Server 2005 will not have this problem. Maybe you can migrate.

  • Error when applying data filters on Logical Dimensional Table

    I have a data filter setup on a dimension table using session variables. The session variables are getting populated in the correct way. To make sure, I created an analysis with session variables, and I see the values that I need to apply the data filters.
    When I select a column from the dimensional table in the presentation services, I am getting below error.

    You can go into the BI Administration tool, then go to tools. After that go to Query Repository.
    In the "name" field leave the "*". Set the "type" to variable and do not establish a filter.
    Once you hit query you should see all of the repository variables listed and you can see the code that is throwing you the error. Although, in my case it is throwing me a code that does not exist in this list. I'm a bit stuck as well.
    Anyone?

    it's another topic, to improve query performance, we evaluate if aggregate help or not, to justify we use bw statistic or ST03N, where summarization ratio is > 10;
    the summarization ratio = number of record read from database / number of record transferred,
    we need also the other parameter 'percentage of db time', time spent on database / total query runtime.

    One dimension can have only one hierrarchy for sure.But create dimension in a such a way(columns should be included in one dimension,example: Year and FYear in Time Dimension) that we can create two branches on Total level.

  • Query is not running after one table exceeds certain records, any limit?

    I have a production database and a reporting database. Production is on version 9.2.0.5 where as Reporting is on 9.2.0.3. I had a query which uses Gl table which grows every month. The query use to take almost same time both in Production as well as Reporting. After the table grew in last couple of months. I observed the query just hangs up in production where as it continues to run in Reporting. Is it the orcale version which makes any difference for the query not to run in prodcution when Gl table had 27 million rows as against 25 million rows a couple of months of ago? Any help is appreciated.

    You cannot and should not attempt to diagnose a problem, without understanding the problem. If you have no idea what the problem is, how can you simply jump to the conclusion that "+oh, it must be the version difference+"!?
    You can only solve a problem by understanding it. It is that simple. So first understand what the query is doing and why it seems to hang BEFORE you attempt to diagnose and solve it.

    I’m hoping someone can help me with understanding advantages and disadvantages if we want to build a universe on top of a fully normalized tables, compared to using a dimensional model with star schemas.
    I’ve read some discussions here that say that it is possible to create a universe on top of normalized tables. Then, can we avoid building of dimensional tables (a data mart), and just use normalized tables? I would say that it is easier to use star schema dimensions and facts tables to build a universe, but our end users might ask “why do we have to go through building a dimensional data mart, if we can have same reports with hierarchies and drill-down functionality based on a universe built on top of our already existing normalized tables?”
    Can you point me to some established best practices regarding using normalized tables to build a universe? Any documents with some examples for this?
    Any expected difficulties during design/development phase of our universe, related to using normalized tables?
    Any expected performance degradation if we use normalized tables compared to using dimensional tables?
    Can I build universe more easily if I transform (modify) our normalized model (by using alias tables and views) to look like snowflake model?
    I’m using BOE XI 3.1, tables are in Oracle 11.2.

    Few Disadvantages that I usually face when building universe on Normalized tables,
    1. Performance - Read operations have to suffer because indexing strategies do not go well with table joins
    2. Derived Tables - Due to complex Queries/ Logic, most of the time, end-up creating derived tables, which doesn't use back-end table indexes and slows down the report runtime.
    3. Normalized table/ Transaction tables may not always have proper cardinality and often results in Cartesian products
    4. Normalized tables may not have tight referential integrity and may have to join more than one column and join on varchar, etc whereas, good Dimensional model datawarehouse will have proper keys/ integer joins and not always necessary to join on multiple fields
    5. Often deal with Fan and Chasm Traps
    6. Dealing with Database fields with nulls, blanks, date in numeric format, etc.,
    7. No Facts, Dimensions separated and most of the time they are in same table
    and More...
    If performance is not a matter and building Datawarehouse is a big deal, then I will start building Universe on normalized tables by having the database diagram as reference for Joins, contexts, etc
    Note: After dealing with universes based on normalized tables for few years (by creating views, complex sql queries data loading to tables and unv on these tables, derived tables), I ended up creating star-schema dimensional model (couple of months extra ETL work), users/ developers felt lot better when they have to create standard/ ad-hoc reports and they are super fast compared to previous universes.

    This way wont work beacause , am displaying other text and table both, and the table will be diplayed based on some conditions. If the conditions are true , table will be diplayed , else not.
    I missed to illustrate text in the example. The scenario is something like this :
    Page Header
    Text .........
    Table [Displayed conditionaly]
    Page Footer
    Please suggest me some way to do this.

    i want to generate MS-word report for TestStand after successful testing using MS-word2000.
    Test report contains Actual values, Expected values and Pass/Fail status.
    In my program i have customized all  fields i can able to generate test report which contains Verification engineer name , test mode, test date, start time, end time Actual values, Expected values and Pass/Fail status.etc....
    To put all values of test case number, Test step number, Actual values, Expected values and Pass/Fail status in to table for each time, i will
    insert a row into table every time values arrives, once the table exceedes its page size it moves to the next page, next page should start with table row header  but it start with  values of above said parameters.
    so i'm not able to repeat table row header for each page.
