  • Bug/Solution: iPod seen by Windows but not by iTunes

(apologies if this has already been reported)
So I had the problem where iPod would show up in Windows as a drive letter, but iTunes wouldn't see it at all. I had followed all the instructions in this article to no avail:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
And then I tried something which ended up working. This may be somewhat of an edge case scenario, but it's possible others may hit it:
My OS is installed on the D: drive, instead of normally on C:. Also, there was nothing assigned to C:. So when the iPod was plugged in, Windows gave it C:. As I said, iTunes would not recognize the device at all.
On a whim, I reassigned some other USB device to C: so that the iPod would be forced to a different drive letter (I think it was G). Lo and behold, iTunes recognized the iPod just fine.
I didn't do any other testing on it, but it seems if iPod's drive letter < OS letter, iTunes won't see it(?)
Anyway, hope this helps someone else.<br>

Thanks a lot, I must have spent close to 15 hours trying to figure out why my ipod didn't work with my re-installed windows. It turned out my windows was on drive H:, and the ipod was being mounted to drive C:. I switched the ipod to drive I:, and it finally worked! The following instructions may help if your computer sees your ipod in windows explorer (My computer) but not in iTunes, and the ipod is mounted on a drive letter lower than the operating system.
To switch your Ipod to a different drive letter:
    1. Connect your ipod to the desired usb 2.0 port.
    2. Go to the start menu and click "Control Panel".
    3. If you are in "Category view" (check the upper left where it says "Switch to classic view") switch to classic view.
    4. Double-Click "administrative tools".
    5. Double-Click "computer management".
    6. Under "storage" on the left, click "Disk Management", and wait for it to connect to the logical disk managament service.
    7. Your Ipod should show up in "volume" column; RIGHT click on it and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..." from the pop-up menu.
    8. Click on the "Change..." button.
    9. Select a different drive letter from the pull down menu. (Pick a drive letter higher than the one your operating system .ie Windows XP.. is installed on. For example if Windows is on drive D:, then pick a drive letter E: or higher.)
    10. Click "Ok"
    11. Click "Yes"
    12. Restart the computer, and see if your Ipod will connect to iTunes!

  • IPod Recognized in Windows, not in iTunes

Like many others on this forum, I've been having issues with iTunes and my iPod since installing iTunes 7.0. My iPod appears in My Computer, but iTunes will not recognize it.
My first instinct was to try the iPod updater, however when I attempt to run it I get the following error message: "Invalid iPod Service Version."
I have tried everything I could find on this website, starting with all the steps in Apple's "iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes" article. Most of these steps have not worked, though I've had limited success with the step entitled "Restart the iPod Service." After performing this step, iTunes does indeed recognize my iPod, but this only works until the next time I eject my iPod. It does not appear to be permanently solving this issue for me, as I have to manually restart the iPod service every time if I want it to work. I noticed during this step that my iPod service was set to "Manual", so I changed it to "Automatic", however this has made no difference.
None of the other steps in that article have worked for me, and yes I have done every one of them. I have additionally uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes several times. I have attempted to uninstall iTunes 7.0 and reinstall an older version, but this no longer works as there seem to be errors if I attempt this. I have tried reinstalling the iPod software, but this hasn't helped either. I have tried the first 4 out of the 5 R's, but this hasn't helped (I'm not quite willing to believe I have to restore my iPod just yet). I have tried resetting the iPod while it's connected to the computer, but this hasn't helped. I saw in one user's post that he was able to fix his problem by going to the Device Manager, clicking on his iPod, clicking the Volumes tab, and clicking Populate, but this didn't work for me. I have tried toggling AutoRun on and off, but this hasn't worked. I tried deactivating all potentially conflicting startup services, but this hasn't worked.
I'm really at the end of my rope here. If anybody has any new suggestions I would greatly appreciate the help.

    Hi Toonz,
Please note that in my above post I stated that I did indeed follow the steps you outline below, which I originally found in Apple's main article on this topic. The result was that it worked temporarily. The iPod was recognized, but only until I ejected it. It only works once. If I attempt to connect the iPod again (either before or after rebooting), it is again unrecognized and I have to manually repeat the steps below to get it to work.
Also I did take your advice and try booting with the iPod plugged in. During the boot up process I see a black screen with some text and a message, which I believe said "Diskette Drive 0 failed to initialize". Something like that. When my computer finishes booting and I open iTunes, yes my iPod is recognized, but again this only works one time. If I eject the iPod and reconnect it it is unrecognized. It is only recignized if it is connected before booting up, which is definitely not the way an iPod is supposed to work.

  • ITunes Won't Open on a Windows Machine

    Just as some background information:
I first got my iPod for Christmas in 2004. I upgraded my computer to Windows 2000, installed service pack 4, and installed and ran iTunes without incident. After each subsequent upgrade, I've been able to run the program fine, with no problem. However, with the release of iTunes v6, I haven't been able to run the program after a (seemingly) successful upgrade. The problem is that I'll click on it, it will show up in my task manager, but the timer will stop (always at about 00:00:06) and the mem usage will freeze at about 12,000 K, or thereabouts.
I've uninstalled any extraneous programs on my computer. I've uninstalled iTunes completely and redownloaded it, as well as uninstalling iTunes and Quicktime completely and redownloading both. I've tried to run the program with my Norten Internet Security (2005) disabled and even closed the program completely. I've run a check for both viruses and spyware, both of which showed my computer was clean (both my antivirus and antispyware programs are up to date).
I'm suspecting that the culprit is something that can be solved for about 40 bucks -- not enough RAM. Right now, my computer is calculating it at around 320 (in a two slot machine, one card is 256 megs, and the other is a 64 meg card). As specific as I've tried to be, I failed to note the RAM requirements for this current version of iTunes as compared to those of versions past.
In plain terms, is my problem not enough memory? Or could there be some other problem?
Dell Dimension L600r   Windows 2000   Service Pack 4, 320 RAM

    Just some more information.
I have a Pentium III processor...I want to say around 700 MHz (but I'm sure someone who knows what they are talking about is going to correct that number). In terms of numbers, I meet all of the system requirements provided on the iTunes 6 download page.
I have tried the technique (suggested before on this board) of uninstalling both, reinstalling Quicktime as a standalone player, and then reinstalling iTunes. I did this by the suggested method of saving the installers to my harddrive and installing from there. I still have the same problem.
I don't know what to do, and as i can't afford a new computer, I'd at least like to know why this one isn't able to perform what I want it to do.

  • PERMIT_READ to limit dimensions

    Hi,
I have a 9.2.0.6 EE DB running on Linux RHEL ES3.0. I am using AW to build a Cube and present it through Discoverer plus 10g. Everything is currently working fine and Discoverer produces great looking presentations out of OLAP.
What I am trying to do now is to build a security mechanism restricting the users to view the data based on product dimension. My product dimension has three level hierarchy: All Products -> Product Groups -> Products.
So, if user1 is logged in then I want that user to view only GRP1 and its children, user2 for GRP2 and its children and so on so forth.
In order to do this, I have an ALL_USERS dimensions containing all the available users and user_variable dimensioned by ALL_USERS and PRODUCT. I store 1 to the variable if a user has access to a particular product group and its chidren. And in the PERMIT_READ program, I use the following.
    CONSIDER ALL_USERS
PERMIT READ WHEN ALL_USERS EQ USERID
    CONSIDER PRODUCT
PERMIT READ WHEN USER_VARIABLE EQ 1
When I open the AW in OLAP worksheet and report the Product dimension, it properly displays the dimension values of product. However, in the Discoverer Query wizard, nothing comes up for Product dimension value window. Then I put 1 for user_variable for 'All Products' variable as well. That showed the top level product hierarchy, but was not able to drill down probably because I limited to one Product group.
Obviously, I am not doing something right! What's the better way to implement this logic?
    Thanks for all your help
    Suresh.

    Ok, here's What I do.
    1. a Load program loads the database Users with specific Cube access role into ALL_USERS dimension.
    2. Product Dimension is refreshed daily.
    3. a Load program gets the Product/User Combination from a relational table and updates PRODUCT_USER_VARIABLE with 1 where the combination matches.
In the PERMIT_READ program, I have following lines
    CONSIDER ALL_USERS
PERMIT READ WHEN ALL_USERS EQ USERID
    CONSIDER PRODUCT
PERMIT READ WHEN nafill(USER_PRODUCT_VARIABLE,0) EQ 1
In order to test whether it selects the right products, I had an outfile setup in permit_read program which reports the product dim after permits have been set. Output file correctly reported out the list of products enabled for the user logged in, when discoverer was launched.
However, when I build a query, the Product Dimension value window comes up with top level and was not able to drill down. My product has following hierarchy (ALL PRODUCTS -> PRODUCT GROUPS -> PRODUCT). The way I set the value in the user_variable was like following:
    Value in the variable:
    Product User1 User2 User3
    All Products 1 1 1
    GROUP1 1 NA NA
    PROD1 1 NA NA
    PROD2 1 NA NA
    GROUP2 NA 1 NA
    PROD3 NA 1 NA
    GROUP3 NA NA 1
    PROD4 NA NA 1
    PROD5 NA NA 1
the result I want is when I logged in as User1, show up All Products in the product dim window and able to drill down to group1 and products. It shows up All products, but not able to drill down.
What am I doing wrong here?
    Thanks for your help
    Suresh.

  • Ipod isn't recognized by Itunes or Windows

    Hi all,
I have recently sent my Ipod, which is less than a year old, to be checked over by the Apple technicians as it would not switch on nor be recognized when I connected it to the computer. They returned it saying there was no problem and if there had been, it had been resolved during their tests. Once safely knowing it worked again I ran a virus check on all the content I sync to my ipod and when nothing came up, I put it all back onto my ipod since it had been removed due to apple technician testing. Now the same problem is occurring. The Ipod wont switch on and seems to be in a continuous mode of restarting but not actually doing so. I can't restore the ipod as it is not recognized by itunes or windows, what can I do?
    Thanks for all your help

  • 1st gen shuffle not recognized by windows, itunes, or reset utility

Have had shuffle for just over a year (figures). Ran out of charge, tried to charge it, but computer didn't recognize. Have tried to reset and recharge. No lights come on when attached to computer. When I try to play it, green light comes on momentarily and I can hear music, but then it dies in about a minute. Can't restore because itunes won't recognize it. Finally downloaded shuffle reset utility, but that doesn't recognize it either. Is it dead? Should I toss it? I'm almost more ****** that I've spent a lot of time trying to diagnose it than I am that it stopped working. See lots of references to this topic, but can't get a definitive answer.

  • New ipod nano 2nd gen. not loading onto windows or itunes

I just got an ipod nano 2gb 2nd gen. (refurbished from apple). I updated my former version of itunes (my daughter has a 1st gen. nano, so she's been using itunes with her's with no problems..) to the latest version like the quick start guide says. Plugged in the ipod to the usb port on the back of the computer and the setup wizard pops up, asking to install the software for the device. I try letting it auto search, which it finds nothing, and I get a message saying "your new hardware may not work properly.....". I checked the device manager and the ipod is listed under "other devices" with a question mark by it. I checked to make sure my daughters 1st gen. nano works with the updated itunes and it does with no problems. Now what?

I also have a 2nd generation, which I purchased after my ipod Shuffle stopped updating. We plugged it in, followed the instructions but the Nano was not recognised by my PC, however, my nano does get recognised on my husband's pc. My daughters ipod and my old shuffle both are still recognised on my pc. I need to delete the shuffle, as it is faulty, but more importantly, I need to get my pc to recognise the nano. Please help.

  • IPod not being "recognized" by Windows XP

So I just got my 30GB iPod Video and I installed all the software and stuff. I hooked the USB cable up, but each time windows says "USB Device not Recognized". I looked at the message and it says something about a driver not being installed for the device. If anyone could help me I would love it!!! I've done EVERYTHING!!!

I hope this will help. I had installed my 5th Gen. 30 Gig iPod on my computer which originally only had 1.1 USB ports on it at that time, and it did sync and work, but I wanted to be able to sync faster. So, I had a 2.0 USB card installed. This card would not recognize my iPod at all. I reinstalled iTunes and iPod software thinking that would help, but nothing helped the 2.0 card simply would not work with the iPod.
So, I went to the iPod search site and did a search to find approved 2.0 usb cards. That yeilded several pages of approved USB cards. I took this list to my computer guru, they ordered me one of the approved cards, took out the first "generic usb 2.0" card they had installed and put in the new on. Guess what, it immediately worked when I plugged in my iPod!!! It copied 59.2 minutes worth of music to the iPod in less than 10 seconds! I am amazed how much faster it is.
I say all of this to say that your computer's USB card may not be compatible with your iPod. If not, change out the card with one that is. I hope you will have the same success I had. What a difference it makes! Good luck.

  • From Mac to PC. 3rd gen.iPod shows in Windows and not in iTunes

    3rd Generation iPod version 2.3
Installing on a PC using Windows XP Home Edition
My son gave me his old iPod having just bought the newest version. I already own an iPod shuffle and have not had any difficulties. I would mention however that my son used the iPod with his Mac computer.
My difficulty is that the iPod shows up in Windows and not in iTunes. I just cannot get iTunes to recognize this iPod.
On the settings on the iPod it states my name, the format is Windows and funnily enough all my playlists have been downloaded but not the tunes.
I have uninstalled the iPod shuffle and uninstalled, reinstalled the software registering the new iPod to me and have gone through all the points mentioned on the Apple site on http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716 many times.
Because I kept getting the balloon “One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it” (Even though it appeared in Disk Drives in Device Manager) I have bought and installed a USB 2.0 port PCI card. I really thought this would be the answer. However the usual balloons came up the first time (after having uninstalled and reinstalled the software yet again). The balloons stated that the hardware device has been installed and ready to use. However nothing appears in iTunes. Upon reconnecting the iPod again in whatever port I am still getting the balloon message “USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned……………………..” All the USB port function properly with other devices (including the iPod shuffle when the software is uninstalled and installed again giving the shuffles details) and on the Device Manager windows they show as working properly. Still on the iPod “do not disconnect” and nothing on the window in iTunes and everytime I plug it in the same old notice comes up.
Any ideas of a solution would be greatly appreciated.

No reply from this discussion group but if this helps anyone else it would be good.
I reformated iPod by right clicking on disk in My Computer and clicking format.
After many different notices when trying to open I went to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304996 and followed the instructions.
The problem was solved and my iPod now appears in iTunes and I am able to sync.

  • IPOD appears in Windows but does not Appear in ITunes

O.K. Forum Gang here's goes nothing.....brand spankin' new 5thG IPOD and I can not get it to interface with ITunes. IPOD remains in "do not disconnect" mode when connected to computer via usb - itunes does not launch.
When I open ITunes this message appears "The software required for communicating with the IPod is not installed correctly. Please Reinstall ITunes." I have now reinstalled ITunes upwards of ten times and the problem still persists. I have done everything Apple asks in accordance with Apple Support document 93716 (same title as my subject line). Deleted ITunes, QuickTime, emptied Temp Files, Restated computer ad nausema...etc.
My guess, albeit an uneducated one when it comes to these problems, is that something is amiss within Windows??
If someone can step up to the plate and provide me the solution to my problem I will be overjoyed!!!

    Problem solved Hallelujah!!
Send your checks to MarkinMadison!! Here's his post:
"Solution to "Software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed"!
I battled this same problem for about 5 hours. Going through re-installations, the "5 R's", all these discussion boards. Nothing worked.
The problem is that iPodService was repeatedly crashing after minute or so. You can verify this by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Delete and noting that iPodService is missing from the process list (sort by image name), or by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting "Manage", then going to Services and checking out the IPodService service - if it gives you the option to "Start", then it's not running.
    Here is what worked.
    1. De-install iTunes and iPod (if you have the updater installed) completely by going to Start --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs. Also delete the C:\Program Files\iTunes and c:\Progam Files\iPod\bin directories. (Don't worry, this doesn't affect your saved music files.)
    2. Log in as an Administrator
    3. Go into the registry (note this is dangerous - you should be careful) and remove the iPod entries that the uninstaller misses.
3.1 Go to Start menu --> Run.
    3.2 Type in "regedit".
    3.3 Go to HKEYCLASSESROOT --> IPodService.iPodManager.
There are two keys here, iPodManager and iPodManager.1. In my case, I did not have permission to view either of these. I think this is the root cause of the problem. I think the installer can't properly update these because it doesn't have permission. So you need to change the permissions:
    3.4 Right-click on IPodService.IPodManager
3.4.1 Select "Permissions..." A warning will appear saying you don't have permission, but that you can change permissions.
3.4.2 On the window that launches, click on "Advanced..."
3.4.3 Click on the "Owner" tab.
3.4.4 Select a valid account (the one you're logged in under) under "Change Owner To".
3.4.5 Click the checkbox that says: "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects."
    3.4.5 Hit "OK".
3.4.6 Back on the main Permissions window, hit Add and add the same account as a valid user.
3.4.6.1 Where it says "Enter the object names to select", type in the account name, e.g. "Smith".
3.4.7 Click on the "Allow" checkboxes for "Full Control" and "Read".
    3.4.8 Hit "OK".
3.5 Repeat procedure for the "iPodManager.1" key.
3.6 Now right-click and delete both of these keys.
3.7 If you can't delete, you might need to open up the keys and repeat the procedure on the sub-keys.
    4. Exit out of the registry editor.
    5. Re-install iTunes. I re-installed iTunes and reconnected the iPod, and everything worked.
I want to repeat that editing the registry can completely mess up your computer if you modify the wrong things, so only do this if you're comfortable, and be extremely careful.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Windows "No Disk in Drive" error

I'm having some issues with the Enable Disk Use feature and Windows. I have a 5th Gen 30gb iPod. My preferences are set to 1) Open iTunes when this iPod is connected; and 2) Only sync checked items. Enable Disk Use is not checked.

    Hi All,
I'm facing some problem when print the output. After i run the program, the output is print at out of the window.
    Could someone advise?
    Thanks,
    Alice

If you could see the layout correctly in the print preview but it gets truncated/ prints outside the window when you actually print it then it might be the problem with the printer settings also. The printer setting defined in transaction SPAD might be one of the reasons. Check with the BASIS team what are the margin setups relevant for the printer on which you are trying to print.
Cross check by printing on some other printer. If the results are not good, then try and check the dimensions of window in SAPscript.
And since it is SAPscript make sure that you do a client copy after you make the changes for dimensions, incase the developement client and testing client are different.
