Director/Projector hangs on exit/halt on Windows

I have a complex Director Projector application that has been
in the field for years now. In the last few months we have started
having problems with the application.
The problem is that when the user clicks on a button in the
Projector app to quit (and our Lingo code calls quit or halt) the
app hangs before it exits.
Once it has hung you can't then start up an new instance of
the app or even of Director itself. You also can't kill the hung
app in Task Manager and any new instances of the app (or Director)
that you open sit waiting in Task Manager.
If you wait five minutes or so, the hung app sometimes will
finally exit. Other times, after five minutes or so the app becomes
killable in Task Manager. At which point any instances of the app
that you have tried to open will then appear.
Two other slight variations. Sometimes instead of hanging the
Projector exe will trip a Windows exception report. Occasionally
the hung app will never become killable and the only way to get any
Projector/Director usage back is to restart the machine.
The exit hang also happens when you quit Director if you have
been running the app within Director.
The app uses three third party Xtras: SequenceXtra, BuddyAPI
and MD5Hashing.
This problem first appeared a few months ago as an occasional
occurance. As of a few days ago the hang happens just about every
time I quit the Projector app on my machine.
It also seems to happen with copies of the Projector app that
were built several years ago. This implies to me that the new
behaviour may have been bought on by a Windows update.
To further complicate the situation, on some machines the
problem is different. I have one machine, which is upto date on
Windows updates, where old versions of the Projector app crash on
exist but don't hang and new versions of the app don't crash or
hang.
I tried running the Projector in a clean WinXP install (no
services packs or updates installed) and there were no hangs. I
also have reports that the hang doesn't happen in Windows Vista.
I tried removing all of our Lingo code that runs on exit,
except the "halt". The hang still occurs. My logging suggests that
the hang occurs after all the Lingo code have finished.
Is anyone else having these issues ?

Hi Andy.
Although I have not had any of the described problems, I'd
suggest
looking into registered Objects etc. Since the app hangs and
resides in
memory, it might be a good idea to unset all globals and
objects that
are being used before executing the 'halt' command.
Might give it a try.
Cheers, Jochen

  • Firefox 4 Hangs on Exit even in safe mode Win 7 x64

    Whenever I close firefox 4 using the upper right "close" button in Windows 7 x64, it hangs in memory. The windows themselves seem to close properly, but I cannot start firefox without using the "end process tree" function in task manager. If, however, I use the firefox menu-->exit, this behavior doesn't happen. Firefox will close normally. This even happens in safe mode. I have tried re-installing firefox to no avail. I have even disabled AntiVir free with no success. I have not yet tried to disable windows defender, but that shouldn't be problematic. Any answers out there? Anyone with similar problems? I run a clean system, and I'm very tech savvy, but this one just boggles me.

    Solved? Ok, so I think I fixed this myself. Originally, re-installing firefox after an uninstall (w/ option to delete profile) did not work. Here is what did work for me:
    <br />
    -Complete uninstall of firefox w/ option to delete profile<br />
    -Manually delete entire profile under c:/users/NAME/app data/roaming/mozilla (yes, information will still be there even after a complete uninstall of firefox)<br />
    -Update any other mozilla products (for me, Thunderbird... it turns out the older version was somehow sharing plugins and profile directories)<br />
    -Download firefox 4.0<br />
    -Install w/ defaults<br />
    -disable all plugins manually (go to add-ons and select "disable" for each... why are there plugins you ask? well, some things like Adobe reader, etc... will automatically load in when firefox is installed if that particular program is already on your computer)<br />
    -enable only basic plugins (for me, flash, java, and silverlight)<br />
    -change settings as preferred (my changes were all in the privacy settings)<br />
    -close and reopen firefox (I would recommend doing this at every minute step so you can troubleshoot what happened)<br />
    -add plugins/extensions one at a time, reset firefox (option given once a plugin is installed), configure the plugin, close firefox, open firefox, repeat and wash for each plugin...<br />
    -if any plugin/extension causes a hang, disable it. "End tree" in task manager for the hung firefox. Start firefox. Disable plugin. Do not "Restart" firefox at this point, as it will hang. Instead, use firefox-->close. Then, go in and try enabling the plugin, configure it, and the restart. If all is good at this point, leave the plugin. If not, wash, repeat, leave it disabled and move on without it at this point.<br />
    -run your firefox sync<br />
    -enjoy a working copy of firefox.<br />
    The essential point is to CLEAN EVERY POSSIBLE THING OUT and install the bare minimum, then add parts incrementally and determine that every increment works. Simple, straightforward, but not always obvious.
    I hope this helps...

  • Program hangs on exit

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm having trouble with the java virtual machine or maybe some class may be causing this too. Windows and everything else completely hangs once I exit from my program.
    This just happens with some programs. I have been working on a project for a couply of weeks now, and there was absolutely nothing wrong. Then today the program starts to hang on exit. I have seen this happen with other programs as well, even demos i have downloaded from java.sun.com
    Like I said, the programs works fine, just when you exit your stuck.
    I have tried both exit methods which have worked fine in the past:
    addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter()
                   public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e)
                        System.exit(0);
    as well as:
    frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
    I believe I set up the exit properly, since it has been working for the last couple of weeks and in all my other projects.
    I can't seem to isolate what change to the program caused this. I thought it might just be an increase in size of the program, but even small demos from java.sun.com crash on exit.
    If anybody has any ideas why this is happening can you please help me, i would really appreciate it.
    I should mention I run Windows XP, and I have j2dsk1.4.1
    Thanks in advance for any reply's.

    I have also experienced this problem. The "easiest" way to reproduce it is to get JHotDraw 5.3 and just run up the sample app on Windows XP. Windows XP will hang when you attempt to exit the application(making it difficult to work out exactly what caused the hang). Running under a debugger (Eclipse) the hang is on System.exit, not the window.dispose or anything earlier. I can confirm that this is a problem with
    1.4.1-b21 and with
    1.4.1_01-b01 (the most recently available download).
    I can also confirm that this is not a problem with the 1.3.1_04 or 07 releases.
    Using the -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true flag gets rid of the problem for me on 1.4.1_01-b01 (thank you jbisotti).

  • DW CS3 Hangs on exit

    Has anyone else experienced a recent phenomenon where DW CS3 Hangs on exiting with Vista. This is new and started without any new extensions, but possibly after some windows updates. I'm running Vista Home Premium x64 with UAC off, and the error is:
    The program Dreamweaver.exe version 9.0.0.3481 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.
    The Event ID is 1002 with a Task Category of 101.
    Everything works fine except when I am done working and try to close the program.

    Yes, it's starting happening for me 'recently'.  It started happening on my laptop running Vista.
    I've moved from XP to Windows 7 Ultimate on my desktop and it now happens there as well.
    This week, I moved from Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium (fresh install) on my laptop and it is still happening.
    I have found that if you open Dreamweaver and immediately close it without opening any files then it is ok, but if you open any file, close it, then close Dreamweaver then it just hangs. If you click the Windows close icon a few times then you get the 'look for solution', 'wait' or 'close immediately' options. If you view the crash details it says:
    Description:

  • Director projector file linking

    Ok guys I have a problem I need some expert help. I created a director movie and in the movie I created links to pdf and video files. The pdf's and video files are located on my C: drive in a folder called Files. I usually run my projector from my computer and it works fine because it looks for the pdf and video files from my C:\Files folder. Now I am going to be running my projector from a dvd now and I don't know how to link the files so the projector looks for them on the dvd instead of my computer C:\files folder. Can someone please help me out with this. Also, what all should be included on the dvd to make this run right?
    Thanks so much,
    Todd

    Let me see if i remember this one:
    Place the linked files in the same directory on the DVD as your Director projector and open them using either the moviepath & filename or "@filename.pdf".
    The moviepath and @ return a path with \ for windows or : for the mac although Director or the XTRA you use should modify the path appropriately anyway depending on the platform.
    Once you have got that far then you can experiement with placing the files in a directory one lower than the current one. i.e. "@Files:filename.pdf"

  • Director Projector to Projector file linking.

    How do I Link a windows Director Projector file to another windows Director Projector file ( without opening this linked file in a browser ), it should open like the first projector file ( .exe file) ?

    Thanks. That sort of worked. The web design guy says he no
    longer gets the missing director file error, but now the movie just
    loops rather than jump to the next dcr movie. Strange thing is,
    when I run it on another hard drive or even off a CD, the files
    find each other and run without a hitch. I can't figure out why on
    his server, his first movie just loops. (I checked my files, there
    are no looping settings selected when published.)
    Someone else suggested altering the code:
    goToNetMovie(the moviePath & pThePath)
    where pThePath="yourOldPath/yourOldFile.dcr"
    but that just caused more errors. maybe I didn't pop in my
    data correctly.

  • Mail and Safari hang on exit after recover from disk crash

    Hi,
    I had recently a disk crash on my powerbook. Fortunately the disk gave me enough time to save a disk image of my home folder before it died. Now, I have a new disk in, reinstalled Tiger, updated to 10.4.4. (as I had on the dead disk), copied the home folder from the backup, and fortunately most things work fine.
    I had a system CRASH, while doing the first Spotlight search. I had a second system CRASH, while working in mail. So, I cleared the mail cache. After that, I had no crash anymore and even mail is working fine, until I decide to quit. It then hangs and I have to Force Quit to exit. Similar things happens to Safari.
    I tried several things, e.g. removed the Envelope Index, but it always hangs on exit.
    Any ideas what is going on? I wouldn't like to clear mails totally and reimport and reconfigure the whole thing from scratch.
    Any help is welcome,
    Thomas

    Just in case somebody else runs into such a problem, here is the solution to my puzzle:
    For security reasons (I have a Powerbook and I was worrying about private data in case of a theft...) my mailboxes and any sensitive information is kept on a FileVault disk image of an account I'm usually not using. Instead the FileVault encrypted disk image is mounted in my home folder. To have Mail use the different location I've put symbolic links (ln -s from the terminal).
    Now the problem was, that after my disk crash, some of the directories had been lost, so the links pointed to nowhere. I've got aware on this by looking on the Finder's info on that link. The "More info..." was busy all the time. This means that symbolic links (not aliases!) that point to nowhere are not correctly handled by the Finder and probably by other applications).
    Creating the folders the links pointed to solved the problem!
    Nice to know!

  • Applet leaves cmd prompt hanging afr exit under 1.3.1_02, ok under 1.2.2

    Subject: Applet leaves cmd prompt hanging afr exit under 1.3.1_02, ok under 1.2.2
    I am working with examples from a Java book. My applets leaving the command promt hanging after closing them by clicking the X in the upper left corner. I am running Windows NT 4.0, svc pack 6.
    After the applet is ended the command window hangs and won't respond to ctrl-c. If I attempt to close the command window a message box appears saying the command window is unable to respond to the end request (busy or waiting) and gives me the option to wait / end / cancel.
    This has happened with all the applet examples I have tried and some Sun JAI examples.
    Here is an example from a Java primer:
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    <applet code="AppletLifecycle" width=300 height=50>
    </applet>
    public class AppletLifecycle extends Applet {
    String str = "";
    public void init() {
    str += "init; ";
    public void start() {
    str += "start; ";
    public void stop() {
    str += "stop; ";
    public void destroy() {
    System.out.println("destroy");
    public void paint(Graphics g) {
    g.drawString(str, 10, 25);
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    <applet code="FirstApplet" width=400 height=400>
    </applet>
    public class FirstApplet extends Applet {
    public void paint(Graphics g) {
    g.drawString("This is my first applet!", 20, 200);
    After compling, from the command line I enter:
    C:> appletviewer AppletLifecycle.java (or AppletLifecycle.htm)
    The applet comes up correctly.
    If I close the applet by clicking the X in the upper right corner
    - the applet window goes blank
    - "destroy" appears in the command window
    - the command session is hung and will not respond to a ctrl-c to end the application
    I either have to use task manager to kill the command session or click on the X in the upper right corner of the command window. Task manger says the command session is "not responding". Either way I get the message that the application cannot respond to the end task request (may be busy, waiting for a response, etc.) and the option to wait / end / cancel.
    Under Java 1.2.2 after closing the applet the command session is "waiting" ("hung") until a ctrl-c is typed. Then the DOS promt returns and the command session is free.
    This behavior is consistent with several of the applets in this text book.
    I first encountered this problem when working with examples in the JAI (java advanced imaging) package from Sun. These samples run as applications and display an image. They work correctly but hang when I attempt to close them. I have tried the examples only under 1.3.1_02.
    Can anyone help me figure this out?
    Thanks
    Bill

    The book says that the destory method is is called when an applet is closed.
    If the applet does not have a destroy method then the default destoy method
    the the Applet class is called. Is that wrong or am I not understanding.The book and your understanding is correct. It's just that my experience has indicated that overriding the destroy method is not a good idea. The applet's stop method is called (by the appletviewer or a web browser) when it's ready to close or move onto another document, so any cleanup that you need to do should be done in the stop method. As far as browsers go, IE destroy the applet when you move to another document but Netscape 4+ only call the destroy method when the browser window is closed but there is no guarantee that NN4 will ever call the destroy method. That's the reason why I don't recommend overriding the destroy method -- but as long as you know what is in store for you, you can do anything you want.
    BTW, I've compiled and tested the AppletLifecycle.java program on my JDK1.3.1 and it works with the appletviewer, IE5.5 and NN4.7. I have no trouble stoping the program from the MS-DOS window with a CTRL-C or click the little x on the upper right corner of the display. I do know that when I upgraded to 1.3.1_02, all my applets mysteriously stopped working so I went back to 1.3.1 -- maybe that's the reason why you're left hanging.

  • To exit the command window after  weblogic app server startup

    Hi,
    The startWeblogic.cmd starts the weblogic V 10.0 server without exiting the prompt. Since our requirement wanted the startWeblogic script to exit the window after server startup, we set the parameter SET doExitFlag=true in startweblogic.cmd file , but the result was same as earlier the server started without exiting the window. Also we tried Redirecting the server starup output to a file , but even this did not exit the window.
    My query is
    1. What parameter options one should use to start the server so that it exits the command window in which it was started?
    2. Is there an alternate way to do the same,something like to start it as a background process in Windows?
    Any help in this regard would be great.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Not sure about parameters to startWeblogic.cmd, but from Windows you could
    try
    start /b startWebLogic.cmd > start.log 2 >& 1

  • Premiere Elements 8 hang on exit - fixed

    All,
    As I posted earlier here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2435573#2435573 The "hang-on-exit" bug is now fixed in our latest beta drivers version 195.81. You can find those drivers here:
    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
    As a bonus, these drivers also fix a few issues with GPU accelerated Flash rendering, and fully support the Flash 10.1 beta 2 release, in case you are interested.

    Barthold,
    Thank you for posting and nVidia for the work on these issues.

  • Using Director projector inside Flash

    I have a Director projector from a project I did a few years
    ago but no longer have the .dir file. I want to be able to display
    it on my website. Flash won't let me import the .exe directly. Is
    there any way I can launch the .exe using ActionScript, or maybe
    import the projector into a new Director file and publish it as a
    shockwave file? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    > Flash won't
    > let me import the .exe directly. Is there any way I can
    launch the .exe
    using
    > ActionScript,
    No, you can't import any sort of Director content into Flash.
    Come to that,
    with very good reason, you can't 'launch' an EXE from a
    browser at all. In
    Flash, create a link to the file, which will then allow users
    to download
    and run it.
    > maybe import the projector into a new Director file and
    > publish it as a shockwave file?
    No, you can't do that either I'm afraid. I don;t know of
    anything that will
    decompile Director projectors, and you can't import
    executables into
    Director.

  • SSL access from SWF in Director projector

    Hi all,
    Hoping one of you clever people has the answer...
    I am using a SWF inside a director projector.
    I have successfully been using flashes XML object with
    sendAndLoad to communicate with a PHP script on our web server over
    HTTP.
    The problem is if I do exactly the same just with the PHP
    hosted at a HTTPS address, the flash onLoad fails, no data is
    received with a httpStatus code of 0.
    I have spent sometime googling the issue and believe it may
    have something to do with flashes security.allowInsecureDomain,
    allowDomain, or loadPolicyFile methods, but cannot work out how
    these might be used from an SWF running in director.
    Any help (examples) greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks
    - Ben

    I'm pretty sure a Director projector can't communicate over
    https.
    Shockwave can, since it "piggybacks" on the browser's
    ability. Hence the
    existence of SecureNet xtra from INM:
    <
    http://www.inm.com/products/snx/>.
    However, I think you'll have to
    route your data sending and receiving through Director rather
    than use
    the built-in Flash method.
    Alternatively, it might work from an externally linked swf
    instead of
    one fully imported, so you might try this.

  • InputVerify ... ugly shouldYieldFocus when exit dialog or windows

    yes, maybe I should just skip InputVerify, but I figure I maybe able to learn somethere here.
    I am verifying make sure the jtextfield only has number and it's a required field, everything is okay here. but when I tried to close my dialog it pops up the InputVerify message.
    My cancel button uses
    buttonCancel.setVerifyInputWhenFocusTarget( false);  of course the dialog didn't have that method
    so I tried to search for some idea, but so far I think I had to use override shouldYeildFocus() method, but can I make the jcomponent to see it's a dialog not jtextfield??

A: InputVerify ... ugly shouldYieldFocus when exit dialog or windows

Works fine in the [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/focus.html#inputVerification]Input Verification Demo.
I changed the code to display the panel in a dialog instead of the JFrame.
//        frame.setContentPane(newContentPane);

             if (value == false)
            input.setInputVerifier(null);

And don't forget to use the [url http://forum.java.sun.com/help.jspa?sec=formatting]Code Formatting Tags so the code retains its original formatting.
