Directory corrupted again & again
I'm having a recurring problem with directories becoming fragmented/corrupted on my old computer.
B&W G3, OS9.2.1, 896ram, 2 HD: 80G & 60G. Processor upgraded to 1GHz (PowerLogix hardware).
Original factory HD has been replaced a few months ago. Slave drive is less than 2 yrs old.
I have been using Disk Warrior to repair directories as they occasionally become fragmented. The alerts from DW, or alerts from the finder are becoming more frequent. Sometimes an app will crash/quit and I'll receive alerts re directory corrupted, or various references to file structures, trees, etc. are damaged. Restart from other volume (partition) or DW cd, run DW & aok.
But why is this occurring so frequently?
Controller card on disk going bad? Not likely, my guess, because another volume on slave drive is sometimes corrupted.
Faster processor causing problem? I was running a 900MHz proc, and had no problems. New processor going bad (early failure)?
My suspicions are system-related files, but which ones?
This is getting out of hand, I'm spending too much valuable time rebuilding directories.
Please help, this has got to stop.

While not claiming to have the definitive answer to your query, there are some observations that I can make.
Your configuration seems to be one that you have chosen for audio or video recording/editing. I sympathize with your desire for a responsive setup for that purpose, but I wonder whether you have pushed the whole just that iota beyond its intrinsic capabilities. My Beige G3 has a 400MHz processor, giving a 12x multiplier of the system bus. It has max. RAM (768MB) and two drives of 6GB and 40GB. It is supported by OS 9.2.2. With Spark 2.6 (wave editor) it is quite comfortable. Because there is another Mac with OS 10.2.8 and Spark 2.82, I push the Beige no further for the moment.
I suggest that you update to OS 9.2.2 to begin with, and go over the specification, quality and match of your RAM. I should also remove it, clean the contacts (along, not across) with a soft pencil eraser, and then blow off the detritus and clean the slots with canned air. You are operating your RAM under pressure (metaphorically speaking), and need to be assured that it can withstand the assault.
Even though the chief virtue of 9.2.x is to work with OS X in Classic Mode, there is also better stability as a standalone from 9.2.2 than from 9.2.1. If the foregoing does not improve matters, then, to the extent possible, revert to the prior state of each recent upgrade, one at a time and in the order most recent to least recent. As a reversion appears to reestablish the stability that you had or wish for, you can consider the upgrade as a potential cause of the present difficulty.
In the interests of a leaner and tighter System, there may also be some virtue in having an alternative configuration in Extensions Manager with the superfluous components disabled during your specialized work. Editing, burning to optical disk and so on are patently of continuing interest, but silly voice management may not be integral to your work, and there are many more potential candidates.

Problem with Premiere always conforming Audio again & again
I've got a problem with premiere CC which is always conforming audios time & again & again. Although this problem is not new in Premiere and I did face it in previous versions. But I've never found a good way to avoid it, especially when I work with much heavier clips or with some formats like mpeg or mov....
What should I do? Is that a network issue?
Thanks, Jim.No Antivirus.
Audio is 5.1 audio from the video AVCHD, and music tracks are mp3 files.

Question on Directory corruption
Hello,
I posted last week about my system wide crash on my PM G5. I took it to the Apple store and they diagnosed it as a fried processor. The liquid cooling had also ruptured leaking into the unit. They replaced the processor and I picked up the computer last night. I booted out of my external drive and repaired permissions on my Macintosh HD. I also verified the disk and there were no errors detected. The problem I am having is my spotlight does not seek out the files when rendering the search. For example, I searched for "system profiler" and spotlight did not show the application in its result. When I manualy opened system profiler, then spotlight was able to find it on a subsequent search. This seems to be a consistent thing with alot of program files (it won't find them until I open the file ahead of time). Otherwise, the computer is behaving ok. Does this seem to be a directory corruption of some kind??
What is the BEST way to deal with this?
Should I purchase Disk Warrior and use it. Is that just a quick fix or a permanent one?
Should I back up my data and wipe my hard drive and re-install? I don't want to have to manually reinstall my third party applications one by one. Is there an efficient way around this??
thanks for all your advice and I PROMISE I will (as I do always) grant points for helpful and solved questions

PM G5 Tiger 10.4.9Delete the Spotlight Index files and rebuild.
I use Tiger Cache Cleaner. But a search will offer more utilities.

You don't have Disk Warrior?? shame
That and two backups (backups first, DW4 next).
Disk Utility does not find every and all errors or problems.
Add Applejack to your list of tools, too. Deleting the cache files with it improves performance and eliminates some headaches.
I probably would have erased my hard drive and done a restore from cloned backups. I repair a disk first, never bother to verify, and then run "repair" permissions.
The Mac's Finder has a real case of amnesia and deferred updating. Something that TCC can help cure by forcing the Finder to be more pro-active. Faster disk drives, more memory for caching, keeping your drives in good health. -
Drobo failure & Directory corruption
Reporting my experience with a Drobo failure and great support from Alsoft DiskWarrior :
My Drobo failed. Not a hardware failure, but a corruption in the directory that prevented my disk to mount...
According to Drobo support, everything was "ok" on their side.
According to me, I had lost access to almost 3TB of data !
This was the second time a directory corruption happened to me on one of my Drobo (I've never experienced this on any other type of drive in 15 years... but according to Drobo support, it could happen to anyone...) . Therefore I was already equipped with the excellent "DiskWarrior" from Alsoft, which had already saved me once.
I was not so lucky this time : an error in Alsoft prevented the Directory to be rebuilt.
I contacted Alsoft support and I was really impressed by the service ! Marc from Alsoft took the time to remotely connect to my machine and do his magic, manually retrieving, fixing and mounting the corrupted directory. Helping me retrieve almost 2TB of data.
A couple of lessons :
- be paranoid with backups : this Drobo was storing archives of backups... I was anxious to retrieve the data, but nothing bad happened because of this failure.
- don't trust advertising : Drobo would claim that you cannot loose data. I did...
- don't name your files with generic names : when the directory structure is corrupted, and you have to manually retrieve files, you're much better off with "backup_project_20110823.gzip", than with hundreds of "backup.gzip" files and no folder to know what they are !
- when things go bad use DiskWarrior ! The software is great and the service is incredible !
A couple of questions :
- are serious directory corruptions common on non-drobo hard drives ?
- what's the best method to prevent them (hard unplug/power failures being the cause I know about). I am considering re-activating Tech Tool protection - but it's soooo slow.
- what alternatives to drobo would you recommend for archiving data ?I started lots of corruption issues with my Drobo the same day I upgraded to OS X 10.8. See my discussion thread below.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/20518529#20518529
I logged a case with Drobo Support and they told me I was the only one having such issues.

moderator's note : Please, no personal information. ThanksRe-install the Firmware and see if it makes any difference...
Else, Remove Memory card and SIM and see the difference. If it works OK then check after first inserting only SIM and then only MC ...If you find that MC is creating issue, then Format the MC and try again. If SIM is the problem, try another SIM ( friends' / family members' ..). or get a replacement SIM from your Operator.
If both do not work, visit Nokia Care ... -

File Adapter polls all the files from the directory when deployed again
Hi,
File Adapter polls all the files from the inbound directory irrespective of the timestamp when deployed again.
For ex. when the BPEL process with file adapter is deployed, it starts polling the directory based on the timestamp as and when the directory is written with the files. I did not opt for deleting the files after read by the File Adapter.
But, when BPEL process is modified and deployed again, this time, the file adapter picks up all the files in the inbound directory and doesn't consider the timestamp.
My guess is that it should not pick all the files but based on timestamp only.
I guess I can observe the same behavior if I bounce the Application Server also
Do I have an option to achieve this?
Thanks,
Sasi Bhushan.try this:
1- create a File object for the directory. (look at isDirectory() )
2- create a File[] that represents the files in that directory. (.listFiles())
3- if (file[x].isDirectory()) {recursive method call;}
4- else {
process file;

My wife has an iPad 2. She recently tried to update the OS via wireless internet. The system became totally unresponsive. I finally got the apple logo to come up on the screen, but nothing else. I went online and found out that I could possible restore the system to the original factory settings. I held down the home button and plugged in the USB cable which was connected to my iMac. I went through the restore download to restore the system to factory setting. After the download was complete I ge the following error iPad Software download is corrupt. Disconnect and try again. I did this 6 times with the same result each time. I ensured the iMac was running the latest version of iTunes. I really need some help with this.....can anyone help me please!
Welcome to the Apple Community.
I have seen previous versions mentioned in a pop up message before on iCloud.com, but I'm not really sure at all how it would help, as I couldn't get it to do anything.
The best advice I have at this time is to back up your work on your iOS device by regularly saving it to iTunes, if anything goes wrong you can then either load it into the numbers app again on the device or recover it via iTunes on your computer.
My syncs are immediate, I never get chance to see if it works in the background, sorry. -
Mail "Home Directory is Full" again
Allan Sampson said on 6th July 2006 "With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
After doing so, copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import all mailboxes available within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail.
Select OK and allow the process to complete. This isn't really importing anything but replacing the Envelope Index file and re-indexing all mailboxes.
This should resolve the problem
After confirming all mailboxes and messages are available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and the old Envelope Index file from the Desktop."
I have done all that Alan has outlined but all I get now in the beachball rotating for at least 20 minutes. If I go to the desktop I cannot access mail and if I force close Mail it comes up with the same "Home directory is full". In case I got it wrong first time, I've now repeated it three times with the same result the spinning beach ball which never stops. Help!
Mac mni Mac OS X (10.4.7) I have five macs and two PCsVerify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, try the following variation of the procedure to re-create the index (it could be that you didn't also get rid of Envelope Index-journal, for example):
1. Quit Mail if it's running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
4. Move any "IMAP-", "Mac-", or "Exchange-" account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON'T trash any "POP-" account folders, as that would cause all mail stored there to be lost.
5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder. -

Fix: Active directory corrupted (NTDS ISAM Database Corruption errors in eventlog)
It worked for me!
Frank Keunen
IT-Pro Evangelist :: Microsoft IT Infrastructure Engineer
Follow the procedure below to fix Microsoft Active Directory database problems (corrupted Active Directory due to e.g memory issues/disk problems):
1. Reboot the server and press F8. Choose Directory Services Restore Mode from the Menu.
2. Check the physical location of the Winnt\NTDS\ folder.
3. Check the permissions on the \Winnt\NTDS folder. The default permissions are: Administrators – Full Control System – Full Control
4. Check the Winnt\Sysvol\Sysvol folder to make sure it is shared.
5. Check the permissions on the Winnt\Sysvol\Sysvol share. The default permissions are: Share Permissions: —————— Administrators – Full Control Authenticated Users – Full Control Everyone – Read NTFS Permissions: —————– Administrators – Full Control Authenticated
Users – Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read Creator Owner – none Server Operators – Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read System – Full Control Note: You may not be able to change the permissions on these folders if the Active Directory
database is unavailable because it is damaged, however it is best to know if the permissions are set correctly before you start the recovery process, as it may not be the database that is the problem.
6. Make sure there is a folder in the Sysvol share labeled with the correct name for their domain.
7. Open a command prompt and run NTDSUTIL to verify the paths for the NTDS.dit file. These should match the physical structure from Step 2. To check the file paths type the following commands: Start a command prompt NTDSUTIL Files Info The output should
look similar to: Drive Information: C:\ NTFS (Fixed Drive) free (2.9 Gb) total (3.9 Gb) D:\ NTFS (Fixed Drive) free (3.6 Gb) total (3.9 Gb) DS Path Information: Database : C:\WINNT\NTDS\ntds.dit – 10.1 Mb Backup dir: C:\WINNT\NTDS\dsadata.bak Working dir:
C:\WINNT\NTDS Log dir : C:\WINNT\NTDS – 30.0 Mb total res2.log – 10.0 Mb res1.log – 10.0 Mb edb.log – 10.0 Mb This information is pulled directly from the registry and mismatched paths will cause Active Directory not to start. Type Quit to end the NTDSUTIL
session.
8. Rename the edb.chk file and try to boot to Normal mode. If that fails, proceed with the next steps.
9. Reboot into Directory Services Restore mode again. At the command prompt, use the ESENTUTL to check the integrity of the database. NOTE: You can use NTDSUTIL to check the Integrity, however esentutl is usually more reliable. Type the following command:
ESENTUTL /g “\NTDS.dit” /!10240 /8 /v /x /o (Note: Type the path without the quotes). Note: The default path would be C:\Winnt\NTDS\ntds.dit; however it may be different in some cases. The output will tell you if the database is inconsistent and may produce
a jet_error 1206 stating that the database is corrupt. If the database is inconsistent or corrupt it will need to be recovered or repaired . To recover the database type the following at the command prompt: NTDSUTIL Files Recover If this fails with an error,
type quit until back at the command prompt and repair the database using ESENTUTL by typing the following: ESENTUTL /p “\NTDS.dit” /!10240 /8 /v /x /o (Note: Type the path without the quotes). Note: If you do not put the switches at the end of the command
you will most likely get a Jet_error 1213 “Page size mismatch” error.
10. Delete the log files in the NTDS directory, but do not delete or move the ntds.dit file.
11. The NTDSUTIL tool needs to be run again to check the Integrity of the database and to perform a Semantic Database analysis. To check the integrity, at the command prompt type: NTDSUTIL Files Integrity The output should tell you that the integrity check
completed successfully and prompt that you should perform a Semantic Database Analysis. Type quit. To perform the Semantic Database Analysis type the following at the NTDSUTIL Prompt type: Semantic Database Analysis Go The output will tell you that the Analysis
completed successfully. Type quit and closes the command prompt. NOTE: If you get errors running the Analysis then type the following at the semantic checker prompt: semantic checker: go fix This puts the checker in Fixup mode, which should fix whatever errors
there were.
12. Reboot the server to Normal Mode. If any of these steps fail to recover the database the only alternative is to perform an Authoritative System State restore from backup in Directory Services Restore mode. For more information, please refer to the following

Active Directory Files from the Command http://support.microsoft.com/?id=315131 BR – FrankFrank: This procedure (with some variations required for my environment) worked
perfectly. Thank you very much.
To other readers: The procedure works, but it is a loaded gun. Be careful and methodical.
The specifics of my situation, which I offer as additional information, are:
Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2 with all updates.
One server, 20 clients; of course the server is the domain controller.
I suggest running the command prompt window at an elevated security level ("run as:", followed by unchecking the "restricted" box).
I also suggest changing directories to C:\WINNT\NTDS or C:\WINDOWS\NTDS, as appropriate.
Variations:
The location of the NTDS folder is C:\WINDOWS\NTDS for an install that is not an upgrade from Server 2000.
Step 9 -- the parameters for ESENTUTL are different. For the integrity check I used "ESENTUTL /g NTDS.DIT /8" as the other parameters are not available.
Also in step 9 -- For the repair step that was required I used "ESENTUTL /p NTDS.DIT /8". There was a window warning of a possible data loss, which clicking OK cleared.
Step 11 -- NTDSUTIL FILES INTEGRITY works properly without change. However, the Semantic Database Analysis check cannot be run in a single command. I used "NTDSUTIL SEMANTIC DATABASE ANALYSIS" followed by "GO" at the next prompt. The database analysis does
not report a positive result, but if there is no warning the database passes the analysis. To be certain I ran the "GO FIX" step anyway, which gave identical output.
After this procedure the system started perfectly. I recommend this procedure as the answer to the problem.
