Disable Filevault on Yosemite?

Hey, I just updated to Yosemite and in the set-up window I activated Filevault having a different idea about it. However, when I went to disable, it won't let me until it's all encrypted. Will I have to wait until it's all encrypted to disable it? Or is there anyway I can stop the encryption and disable it all?
Thanks!

You can generate a new recovery key by issuing this command in Terminal:
sudo fdesetup changerecovery -personal
You will be prompted for the password used with your user login. Once you enter that password, it will generate a new recovery key.
You can then confirm this key is active by issuing the command:
sudo fdesetup haspersonalrecoverykey
It should return TRUE.
Hope this helps! I encountered the same situation!

  • Can't disable FileVault

I recently upgraded to Yosemite and now have to enter my password every time I boot up with I find annoying. It seems I need to disable FileVault to solve this problem but when I try I get a message ' FileVault is encrypting the data on your disk. Wait until your disk is fully encrypted before turning off fileVault' Any suggestions?

This is a really crappy bug, and I don't know of an easy way to recover. If you don't feel able to carry out these instructions, get someone more experienced to help you. One option is to make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
You need at least two complete, independent backups of all data before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Start up in Recovery mode by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
When the OS X Utilities window appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not from any of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
Follow the procedure in this thread to erase the FileVault volume. The long string of letters, numbers, and dashes that you will have to enter will be different in your case. Copy and paste it from the Terminal window into the command.
This operation will remove all data from the volume, so you had better be sure of your backups.
Quit Disk Utility. You should then be able to restore the data from a backup in the main screen.

  • Does disabling FileVault needs encryption password at the reboot

    Filevault:
hi, I have question about disabling Filevault. Actually, two days back I was playing around with iCloud and accidentally activated 'Find my Mac' feature. Doing so, it restarted my machine and I was required to enter some four digit code upon the restart.
However I did not remember this code, and I ws completely locked out of my machine. Could not even get into the recovery mode. Everytime I restarted, I was prompted with the same screen to enter the password. So I had to take it to the Mac Center to get it done. They got my password unlocked and now I am logged in.
My concern here is that I need to de-activate this option. When I tried initiating the same, it gave me the prompt that my machine will restart for the decryption to take place. Now I am afraid if I would end up with the same problem that if my machine restarts and would be prompted for the password which I set up while setting up Encryption in the first place which I ofcourde do not remember.
Is there anyone here who has deactivated the Filevault in Mac OS 10.8 and can guide me through how it works.

If a password is set, you will be prompted every time the system is powered on.  There is no option to only prompt if the drive has been removed.
Full disclosure: Lenovo issues my paychecks.

  • How to disable notifications in Yosemite

    Hi!
Is anyone else experiencing problems with notification center in Yosemite? I have disabled both the reminders and the calendar from the notification center (unchecked all boxes and set the notification style to none) but Yosemite keeps enabling them after each time I log out. Is this a bug? Happens on both my iMac and my Macbook after upgrading.
    Thanks!

    SAME PROBLEM!
I am really annoyed with this. I turned them off years ago except for iPhone and yet here they are with a vengeance on my MBPRO 2013 with Yosemite...
    HELP!!!
I just want my "reminders" to go to... well, my iPhone ONLY.
Thank you for my sanity back asap.
I guess I replied instead of clicking "i have same problem"...

  • How to disable animations in Yosemite

The new animations in Yosemite are making me incredibly dizzy and nauseous - it's like the Blair Witch Project for my macbook!
When navigating between spaces, the transition animation consists of the dock, menu bar, desktop picture, and desktop icons all flying to the left. Similarly, when clicking the green button to make a window go full-screen, the dock, menu bar, desktop picture, and desktop icons all fly to the left (in the background) as the application window gets larger.
This animation is making me so nauseous, I'm completely unable to use Spaces, and can't use the "full screen" button at all.
Does anyone know of a way to disable this animation?

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Didn't revecive filevault code Yosemite

When I installed OS X Yosemtie I need to go through configurations windows. Same windows you have always when you star your yourney with Mac so I think you know what I'm talking about. There was a FileVault window. I didn't want that but I forgot what it is and turn it on. I realized that encrypiton started when I wanted to work only on battery I saw "Connect power adapter to resume encryption". So I thought ok never mind. I need to let it go to the end. Also I started reading about it in internet. And I red that I should get a code just right after I turn it on and before encryption start running. Now encrypiton is done but I don't have FileVault code. What now? Maybe issues is caused that I started FileVault process at the begining (configuration) not from the system preferences.

I decrypted the drive, and all is well. An Apple technician told me FileVault is unnecessary "unless you work for the C.I.A."
Decrypting takes 8-12 hours. You can use your computer or let it sleep during the process, you just have to keep it plugged into a power source.
I think it's a major flub that they made this a default for Yosemite, as so few need it, it clearly doesn't work properly, and Apple is a little cavalier about introducing an element that could potentially get someone locked out of their computer.
Personally, I didn't like that it didn't provide a security key, which was supposed to be a part of the process, so I decrypted the drive, and that's my advice to all of you.
    Hope this helps.

  • Missing User settings and files after disabling Filevault on Lion

I just installed OS X Lion on my mac and everything worked fine until I disabled the legacy filevault on my system. When the machine rebooted it had wipped out all my settings and files it would seem. After a bit of searching i found my files in the /Users directory. However the files are placed inside a folder called myusername.fvCopy. If I change any settings in my account like removing apps from the dock and reboot the changes haven't taken effect when it boots back up.
I have no idea what to do about this.
    Any help is much apprciated.
    Thanks in advance
    /Kristian

I fixed it by logging in to a different account and deleteting the broken homefolder via the terminal and renaming the myusername.fvCopy to myusername.

  • Problems with disabling FileVault?

    Hi friends,
I'm taking my MBP in to be assessed for a trade-in. They want to keep it for the day to check its condition, so I'd like to secure my data before handing it over.
My plan is to create a spare account and leave the new account logged in. Moreover, I'm thinking of turning FileVault on for my main account before switching to the spare. That should allay my paranoia.
I'm wondering if there is anything to anticipate about turning FileVault off after the assessment is done. I don't intend to use it continually. My understanding is that the system will extract the encrypted image, and leave my home folder is it was before turning FileVault on. I want to make sure there's not going to be any decryption trouble/performance hits in the aftermath.
Anyone have any comments? Thanks for your help.

You need to have at least the amount of space of your home folder free to decrypt. So, if your home folder is 40GB with FV, you need at least 40GB free on your hard drive to disable the feature.

  • How to disable filevault for a different user

    Hello all,
I have a user who has emnabled FileVault on his account, running 10.6.8.
When he logs in, he sees the spinning beach ball, nothing else.
    No desktop, nothing.
How can I dsiable FileVault and get his account back to normal?
    Thanks in advance.

I have created a user account for her so she doesn't mess with our settings, and I would like to disable printing privileges for her account.
    Is this possible?
Denying printing for a user is possible but you need to modify the CUPS configuration file. It is far easier to deny use of a specific printer for a user. Use the web interface to CUPS http://127.0.0.1:631/printers Find the printer you want to disable for a specific user. Click on the button "Set Allowed Users". You will then be able to list the users you want to have access or to deny access to that printer. If you deny access to the printer, it will not appear in the list of printers when they try to print.

  • Yosemite and filevault

I accidentally turned on filevault during installing yosemite and the process of encripting is on-going for 2 days and my MacBook pro 750gb is unusable slow.
Can´t stop the process (the process needs to end to disable filevault).
    Can´t work. Desperated.

Back up all data before proceeding.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    sudo fdesetup disable
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning.
If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal. Restart the computer. Note that disabling FileVault will take just as long as enabling it has taken.

  • Yosemite slow on Macbook Air

    Help! Seriously....
I updated to Yosemite the other day and since then my Macbook is extremely slow...
It is really annoying, especially because I have no clue what the reason could be.
I would really appreciate if anyone has an idea how to fix this.
Apple doesn´t seem to know the answer! (What a let down...)
Thank you very much for taking your time!
    Some of the problems:
+ The fan is running much more often now
    + MacBook gets very warm
+ Battery drain is extremely high
+ Animations and scrolling inside OS not fluent anymore
I have already tried the following:
    + new install
    + verify disk permissions
    + SMC-Reset
    + PRAM Reset (Cmd+P+R)
Here comes my report, I really hope anyone can help me with that.
I am really disappointed of Apple... What a let down!

  • Filevault desencrypt

    Good evening,
I would like someone to help me with this problem. I have a Macbook Pro 13 " i5 . The problem started when I installed the operating system " Yosemite " and began to slowly get my computer, so I decided to disable " FileVault " and began decrypted my hard drive, and load stayed says " calculating time remaining "and I left 2 prendidao days and not moving , I do not know what to do, my mac is too slow , I need help , as I solve this problem due to Yosemite.

Unless you are willing to erase the drive, all you can do is wait.

  • Problems with apps and safari since installing Yosemite

I could have shot myself after installing Maverick when it cam out but after a zillion updates and finally a 100 mile drive to the nearest Apple store and the genius bar it seemed to be working fine.  I dreaded installing Yosemite but as I have and iPad mini, and Yosemite is billed to work more harmoniously with that, I did the download.  Since then and even following the recent 'update', opening Safari takes forever, I get the rainbow wheel of doom. There is frequently a delay between my typing (about 35 words per minute) and actually seeing the curser and letters on screen, and often webpages just dump.  Other times, apps or webpages will just spontaneously pop open.  Sometimes Safari can't connect to pages.  Not my wifi as if I just choose another page it is fine.  I am actually back to using Chrome because I don't seem to have the same problems as with Safari.....  go figure.  5 years ago after years of pc's and the frustration of having hardware and software that were specifically made for each other, I thru in the towel and paid the bucks for a MacPro laptop and I loved my first three years.  Now, my machine ***** as does Safari!! an Apple app!  I feel like I need to debug, but I don't have any thing like MacKeeper on it now (the Genius bar guy took MacKeeper off when I had that visit to solve the Maverick problems).  I'm tempted to reinstall it but I read so many posts saying that folks had problems with a virus that they attributed to MacKeeper.   So, anyone else having these same problems and can anyone recommend a good cleanup and maintenance software so I can clean this up?

    Do not install MacKeeper.
Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
Determine if the same problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

Back up your Mac, if you have not already done so. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
You inadvertently installed adware. Eradicating it is simple and you don't have to download or install anything to fix it. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended solution read How to install adware.
Google Chrome is known to run notoriously poorly on Macs. If you want to run Google Chrome, you may need to install more memory, upgrade your Mac to a newer model, or both. Use Safari or Firefox, both of which will run well and do not litter a system with a plethora of resource - hungry "helpers" and other constantly running intrusive processes such as those Google insists upon installing.
Adobe Flash Player is outdated. If you need to use Adobe Flash Player, you must keep it up to date. New versions appear very frequently.
You are running a torrent client. Doing so will leave you vulnerable to malware, data theft, or both.
Some users have resolved otherwise inexplicably poor performance with an SMC reset. Read and follow all the steps including those that may appear to be inapplicable or trivial.
If your Mac still performs poorly, please determine if the same problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
If none of the above resolves your concern, more information is required. To augment the information you already provided, follow the instructions below.
If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.
