  • A security question pertaining to disabling the root login. [SOLVED]

I've recently been configuring sudo and came across the following piece of advice:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Su … root_login
After making my normal user a full fledged sudoer I followed the advice in the link above.
    passwd -l root
worked beautifully without problems in spite of the warnings.
However on a hunch after going
    ls -l /etc/passwd
I was dismayed to see that the permission of the file was 644 with owner root. Shouldn't the permission be 640? Otherwise why would a cracker try to guess who is a sudoer when you can look at /etc/passwd and see myname in the entries and go like "OK root's disabled this is the only other human user lemme see if I can crack this..."
Like I would have changed the permission on etc/passwd to 640 but since I'm far from an expert I want to know if this is safe to do/are there any unintended consequences for doing so. Furthermore even if I can do that the cracker will then proceed to search for all users who are members of the wheel group. I don't know what command would do this but clearly there must be a way the OS keeps track of which group has which members. Even if it's possible to safely change the permission of etc/group to 640 or 600 I don't think it's a good idea cause the cracker will still attempt to find all members of the wheel group because wheel is universal to Linux.
My next worry is /etc/shadow. The good news is the permission there is 600. However there may be other files which can give away my username to the cracker besides /etc/passwd and /etc/group. If so what are they. Can they be safetyed?
All in all was disabling root a good idea. I still want my normal user to have sudo powers for convenience. But even so if I am right about /etc/passwd then following the advice there simply makes the job one step longer for el cracker muy malo. Can you guys clue me in as to whether or not /etc/passwd can be safetyed without consequence and what is going on with this whole thing.

I don't think you'll be able to change the permissions without error.  If I'm not very much mistaken, several user-space programs (like xterms) read that to determine what your preferred shell is.
But if I understand the permissions system correctly doesn't the third number dictate access for people that aren't the owner or part of the owners group?
Yes, that's correct.  However, there's no mechanism for them to view the files. Users can't execute processes (including the shell and its commands) unless they've either logged into your computer or found an exploit somewhere. In the event that they've found the exploit, they're most likely already running in either kernel mode or as root, so your security has already been compromised.
You're probably confused because of the oft-used terminology 'world readable'. In reality, that means any local user.
Why would you allow a cracker to login in the first place?
I think this about sums it up, though I would like to elaborate on what's really being said here. There are several ways to give a cracker access to your computer; the most obvious being granting them a user account and letting them sit at your keyboard.  When you run a script or binary written by someone else, it's very close to the same thing. The program you're running can do everything you can.
Just as you wouldn't let someone you don't trust sit at your keyboard, you should only run scripts and binaries from users you trust, at least until you've gathered enough skill to scrutinize their contents. By installing the Arch distribution, it seems you already trust Arch and its repositories, so I wouldn't worry so much about those binaries.
Otherwise why would a cracker try to guess who is a sudoer when you can look at /etc/passwd and see myname in the entries and go like "OK root's disabled this is the only other human user lemme see if I can crack this..."
This is silly, for a number of reasons:
    1) As above, the user would need to already be logged in as a local user.
    2) There are dozens of other places where you can find lists of local users. Even if you were to change the permissions there, a cracker could easily find a list of probable human users by:
        -Listing the contents of /home/.
-Reading the file /etc/group; this if anything is even more dangerous, as it hints at which users have administrative rights.
    3) You're trying for security through obscurity. Instead of hiding the usernames, you should attempt to remove any vulnerabilities that would make knowing a username useful.
Perhaps you'd be better off preventing a brute force attack by monitoring /var/log/auth.log, perhaps with something like Fail2Ban?

  • I downloaded Lion but can't disable the automatic login, how do I change this?

When I downloaded Lion, I am always prompted to login. I was wondering how I can disable this.  I've tried to go to system preferences, to un-check the ability to disable automatic login but it is grayed out.  Is there a way to get around this?
    thank you.

You need to click the lock to make changes. Go to System Preferences/Users & Groups
Select your Account and click the lock on the bottom left to make changes. Enter your Account Password/Click Login Options.  You should now be able to turn Automatic Login Off

    Thank you Trevor,
As per this blog (http://www.houberg.com/2008/05/16/sharepoint-database-indexes-and-statistics/) it seems like
Microsoft allows this (not explicitly though)
I ran the Health Analyzer rule  for "Databases used by SharePoint have fragmented Indexes" for all servers.
I am still seeing a lot of cluster and non clustered indexes having avg_fragmentation_in_percent
     > 60%.
    SELECT * FROM sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats (7, NULL, NULL, NULL , 'DETAILED');
I finally thought that I should rebuild the indexes to fix the issue, but please suggest if that is not the correct approach to resolve the high fragmented indexes.
    thanks

  • Missing DataBase Login information for deployed VS2008 w/Crystal Report

I'm creating a Windows Form application using VS2008 Pro and the basic Crystal Reports (included).</br></br>
I've successfully added a crystalreportviewer control and a crystal report (.rpt) to my form. I've written the following code in the code behind to programmatically load/bind the report to the viewer. Everything works fine on my development machine (or any machine that has Visual Studio installed). Where I'm encountering problems is when I deploy the application to a machine that does not have VS installed (I have downloaded and installed the "Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008 Redistributable Package" for the appropriate processor type on this non development machine) that I'm getting an error . It prompts for "DataBase Login". The ServerName, LoginID and Password are all there, but the "DataBase" field is empty and disable for user input.</br></br>
Why is the DataBase information missing? How can I solve this problem?</br></br>
(On a side note, I vaguely remember a property for enabling/disabling the prompting of the database login. I can't remember where this was again to double check if that is the culprit. HI. Ludek,
Thanks for the tips. I tried both, but the problem presists.
On a side note, I did get my hands on yet another "non-development machine". This one ran with Window's Vista appeared to work (even with my original code).
The "non-development machines" that I've tested on are Windows 7 and Window XP machines. On these machines, when I commented out the reportDocument.SetDatabaseLogon line, when I try to load the report, it still prompts for the Database Logon information, however, it also has the "Database name" empty and disabled.
Since it worked on a non-development machine with Win Vista. I don't think there is a problem with references or the Crystal runtime packages.
As far as permission for the report to contact the database, I'm guessing there isn't a problem there either because the application does successfully connect to the database.
I'm connecting to a SQL2005 database and using the SQL Native connection.
On a side note: as for the enabling prompting, I just remembered that it was an option available when using Crystal Reports with a web project. Thus I couldn't find it here with a Window's Form project.

  • Parameters and database login with Web Services SDK

I need to know how to do the two most common report tasks through the Web Services interface to Crystal Reports Server 2008:
How do I get a list of a report's parameters and set the parameter's values?
How do I set the database login information?
I have considerable experience with writing custom web interfaces for Business Objects Enterprise with .NET, but now we're supposed to use web services instead of Enterprise services, especially when writing Windows forms apps. The official line is that writing thick client apps using Enterprise services is "possible but not supported." I can't seem to find the equivalent to the .Parameters property in Web Services.
The tutorials for Web Services aren't much help. The BIPlatform examples show how to schedule a report without parameters and without setting the database login, but this isn't much help in the real world. The ReportEngine tutorial was apparently written by someone else, and is little or no help.
This seems like such a simple question, but I have wasted an entire day and am no closer to the answer.

I think the following resources will help:

  • Avoid Database Login prompt when using CrystalReportViewer

Is there a way to keep the Database Login prompt from coming up when using Crystal Reports runtime 2008 SP2? I'm using that plus Visual Studio 2008 to develop a Windows Form application to view reports on a client machine that accesses data on a seperate SQL Server 2005 machine. My customer would like to avoid having users manually enter anything everytime a report is opened with the Crystal Reports viewer.
I've used the following code with ODBC and OLE DB report connections. When I use ODBC, the prompt comes up with Integrated Security checked which must be cleared. When I use OLE DB, the prompt comes up with Database Name blank and greyed out so I cannot manually enter it.
    Am I missing something here?

Thanks Jonathan for the tip. I tried it before and after the setDatabaseLogin call yesterday, but got the same results. I'm still going to follow your suggestion because that makes more sense.
Turns out it was the configuration of my ODBC/System DSN that was causing the problem. I reconfigured the System DSN by clearing the check box to provide username/password and now I don't get the Database Login anymore.
I found a different blog post that answered the OLE DB issue I was seeing where the DatabaseName was coming up blank:
    Login Error Database at Runtime
Haven't tried it yet and probably won't because I got the Viewer to work with ODBC the way I like it.

    Server Name: Populated

    User: Empty

For the report to run, do we have 6400 to 6490 ports open?
we have port 1433 open between database and CR server but not the 6400 - 6490 ports open?

When you create a dynamic parameter, Business Objects Enterprise Creates few objects for you that essentially creates you a List Of Values (LOV) object for that parameter. LOVs can be created and configured manually from the Business View Manager. You have to specify the database login information in the Data Connection object that your LOV uses.
    Hope that helps.

  • Website asking for database login

</p Hi, I need your help and please help me.
I have a report that have been working all this time until IT dept told me to change the database to something else.  I changed the datasource and it is running just fine on my computer.  When I loaded my report to the same location on the website so that the users can runs it, it is populates a box asking for database login.  The funny thing is, I recreated a brandnew report pointing to the same database and it loaded up there just fine without asking for the database login.
I don't want to recreate this report and I have to do the same with 20 more reports like this because I customized so much.  Please tell me what should I do?
I am using Crystal Report 2008 version 12.1.0.892 on Window XP 32 bits
Thanks so much for your help!

    Hi,
If a new report works fine on the website then try opening your report in Crystal and go to Database | Set Datasource Location.
Point to the new database and make sure all the tables are updated.  Save it and upload the report to your website.  There may be a table or a subreport that is still trying to connect to the old database.
    Good luck,
    Brian

To be clear when you say the command works in query analyzer. Is this the exact string that you are running in query analyzer?
SELECT username,"password" FROM WebAppUsers WHERE username='akabeera'AND password='avenash'AND archive = 'no'This exact string (the SELECT) looks syntactically incorrect to me, but that doesn't mean your database SQL parser cannot handle it I guess (lack of spaces between quotes keywords), and I'm not sure about the double quotes, but I'm kind of an Oracle guy and all of this could be OK, it just seems messy if nothing else.
I would recommend using first, a type 4 driver if at all possible (not the JDBC/ODBC bridge), and second To avoid much of this messiness, you should whenever possible use a PreparedStatement rather then Statement for this type (and most types) of queries.
