Disadvantages of Oracle RDF Store

Hello all,
what are in your opinion the main disadvantages of the Oracle RDF Store? What are the disadvantages compared to other repository systems (e.g. Fedora Commons)?
It would be great to get some feedback from anyone who has experienc in daily work and development with Oracle RDF Store?
Thanks in advance and
best wishes,
Oliver

I do a comparison and have enough positive facts (but
if there are any others I would take them, too). I
compare .NET, Forms, OAF and APEX with Pros and Cons,
so I need the Cons of Forms ;-)Your comparison logic is incorrect. (sorry to say it, but I couldn't help my self).
you are trying to compare a peanut with an apple and a cucumber and a water melon, they cannot be compared.
so are these products, each of them is under seperate category, and if you want to choose one, you need to think what your business needs are.
Is it for a small business, what are the transaction types? do you need OLAP? how many users? integration? platform? interface...... (you want me to continue :-) ???? )
.NET, try to deploy an application written in .NET against a database other than ACCESS or SQL server.....
APEX it's complete different technology than forms, the requirement needs can't be applied on both.

    "RDF Error occurred" is a generic error message and might be from a number of causes (there are more meaningful error messages in the next patch release, 10.2.0.3). The likely cause is an error due to leading blanks in an object literal string or a null object literal string. For example " Oracle" and "" cause this error during load. This has been fixed in 10.2.0.3. A special patch including this and other fixes for RDF is being made available also. I will post details here as soon as it is ready.
    For now, the best option might be to process your data and remove the leading blanks and re-write the null strings as "NULL" and re-try the load. The special RDF patch should be ready in a couple of weeks.

  • Oracle RDF graph DB data modeling

    I am wondering how Oracle RDF graph DB modeling the attributes of the node or relationship? Suppose a node (dubject or object) is a person which has a lot of attriubtes, say age, birthdate, ssn, address, etc, it sounds to me Oracle RDF cannot assoicate attriubtes to the node and instead it just models each attribute as a node in the graph. Is it common practice to include so many attributes in the graph database?

    Hi,
    RDF (and Oracle's RDF offering) in general allows associating as many attributes as you need to nodes in the graph. You are right in saying that those attributes are
    modeled as RDF resources (nodes). This promotes sharing of resources.
    e.g. The first two triples associate the same street resource with two individuals. The third triple
    provides some descriptive information about this street resource.
    <urn:John>  <urn:livesOnStreet>  <urn:StreetXYZ>
    <urn:Mary>  <urn:livesOnStreet>  <urn:StreetXYZ>
    <urn:StreetXYZ>  rdfs:comment  "Sunset Rd. .... "
    It is usually up to an application to determine how many attributes to use. The underlying RDF graph model supports
    multiple attributes and Oracle's RDF implementation supports multiple attributes.
    It is also possible to store attributes in a separate relational table and use a SQL to join the graph query results
    with your relational data.
    Hope it helps,

  • Scalability of Oracle RDF repository

    Hi,
    I am looking to assess the scalability of the RDF store of 10g: How many triples can it handle? what are the load times, and query times?
    Sincerely,

    Number of Triples that can be stored: The limit is only the database size (in Oracle 10g Release 2 data sizes that can be stored is in the exabyte range). The bytes required to store a triple in the database is approximately equivalent to the size in bytes of the triple itself. In short, billions of triples can be stored.
    Query performance: Query performance scales well and is in the order of seconds for millions of triples (on a machine with Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 3 System with one 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 CPU and 2048 MB of main memory). Some figures for triple sizes upto 80M are at http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/semantic_technologies/pdf/vldb_2005.pdf (can also be accessed by going to http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/semantic_technologies/index.html and clicking on 'An Efficient SQL-based RDF querying scheme', the second link under 'What's new').
    Please note that tuning the database helps improve performance, and also an upcoming patch release has significant performance improvements compared to 10.2.0.2.
    Load performance: On a machine with Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 3 System with one 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 CPU and 2048 MB of main memory the load performance is about 35 minutes to load a million triples. We are planning significant improvements of this in an upcoming database release.
    We are planning on creating a technical white paper with updated performance numbers for upcoming releases. I will post that once it is available.

  • Layout issue in Oracle rdf

    Hi Experts,
    I am facing a strange issue in oracle rdf reports.
    Requesting an assistance from you.
    I have a report which displays the vendor information.
    For all the vendors the layout is working fine for me, but for one particular vendor the vendor name is splitting into 2 lines as follows.
    EAD - Empresa de Arquivo de
    Documentação, SA
    But it is one name as 'EAD - Empresa de Arquivo de Documentação, SA'.
    Please help me on this. how to display this as a single value.
    Thanks,
    Zaheer.

    This is probably because the field is not wide enough. Check the horizontal elasticity property of this field (and possibly the frames around it).

  • Oracle RDF / Joseki : issue with large literals

    Hi,
    I have been using Joseki to query an Oracle RDF model. There seems to be an issue with large literals (according to a few unreliable tests, I would say this concerns literals around and over 4000 chars).
    Here are the two potential behaviours :
    First case:
    If the results contains several lines, one of which contains an overly large literal, there are NO exception on the server side, but the resulting xml is incomplete.
    It misses the "line" containing the large literal, and the xml is stopped there (which means that it also misses the closing </results> and </sparql>. In my case, I am using the results through Jena's sparqlService, which means I get this message :
    XMLStreamException: Unexpected EOF; was expecting a close tag for element <results>
    +at [row,col {unknown-source}]: [31,0]+
    Second case:
    If the query only returns one line which contains an overly large literal, the client receives a simple *"HttpException: 500 Internal Server Error"*
    Here is the error message from my server :

    Thanks for your reply.
    While trying to build up a small test case, I found out why there were discrepancies between the two cases I described.
    Indeed, usually, the two cases return the same thing (no exception on the server side, but incomplete resulting XML).
    The exception I described happened when I tried something else. Since I saw that issues were coming from long literals, I used fn:string-length (ARQ) to figure out how long they were.
    The test case resulting in the CLOB-cast-exception is:
    - too large literal
    - only one result "line" containing this literal
    - usage of fn:string-length (which does not change the behaviour in other cases (i.e. no long literals or/and several lines).
    Anyway, you will receive the other test cases shortly.
    Thanks,
    Regards,
    Julien

  • How do you query Oracle RDF database using Java program?

    Does anyone know how to get data out of the oracle RDF database using Java?
    I'm running the following java code and it returns basically null values. My guess is that the get_triple() function returns a dataset other than resultset. I've tried searching the Oracle web site. Am I supposed to be using CLOB object? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
    sql = "SELECT a.triple.GET_TRIPLE() AS triple FROM family_rdf_data a";
    ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery( sql ) ;
    while ( rs.next() )
    System.out.println( rs.getString(1) ) ;
    rs.close() ;

    get_triple() returns an object, and the code would be different from the code of retrieving a string. Some sample code for retrieving objects is at http://www.oracle.com/technology/sample_code/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/files/advanced/advanced.html
    get_subject(), get_property() return strings so the code below should work. get_object() returns a CLOB so different handling would be required and there is some sample code at the link above.

    As far as rman - any version - I don't see any disadvantages.

  • Oracle RDF Rules Semantics

    Hi,
    Are the semantics of the rules for Oracle RDF documented anywhere? I'm not exactly sure what I can and cannot say.
    thanks
    John

    I'm trying to create user defined rule function and bind variable in rule syntax, but i dont know how to do that in
    Oracle Db. I did that successfully when i tried in Jena and using RDF/XML File...
    For example i have such RDF/XML file like this :
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <rdf:RDF
    xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#"
    xmlns:owl="http://www.w3.org/2002/07/owl#"
    xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#"
    xmlns="http://www.owl-ontologies.com/Ontology1230795417.owl#"
    xmlns:rdfs="http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#"
    xml:base="http://www.owl-ontologies.com/Ontology1230795417.owl">
    <owl:Ontology rdf:about=""/>
    <owl:Class rdf:ID="Example"/>
    <owl:FunctionalProperty rdf:ID="has_factorialvalue">
    <rdfs:range rdf:resource="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#int"/>
    <rdfs:domain rdf:resource="#Example"/>
    <rdf:type rdf:resource="http://www.w3.org/2002/07/owl#DatatypeProperty"/>
    </owl:FunctionalProperty>
    <owl:FunctionalProperty rdf:ID="has_value">
    <rdfs:range rdf:resource="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#int"/>
    <rdfs:domain rdf:resource="#Example"/>
    <rdf:type rdf:resource="http://www.w3.org/2002/07/owl#DatatypeProperty"/>
    </owl:FunctionalProperty>
    <Example rdf:ID="Example_1">
    <has_value rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#int" >5</has_value>
    </Example>
    <Example rdf:ID="Example_2">
    <has_value rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#int">3</has_value>
    </Example>
    </rdf:RDF>
    I have one Class "Example" which has 2 datatype properties : has_value and has_factorial_value, So if I have
    an Example1 as an instance of Example which has_value is 5 then has_factorial_value must be 120.
    So the Rule is
    exampletestrule1: (?b rdf:type h:Example) (?b h:has_value ?z) myfactorial(?z,?rs) -> (?b h:has_factorialvalue ?rs)
    Here for the source code
    Now... The problem is how to implement this user defined rule in Oracle db (create our own builtin function then apply it to oracle semantic rule, in this case, myfactorial

  • Implementing Oracle RDF for existing databases.

    Hi,
    I am a newbie to RDF. I am supposed to dio a PoC for a Oracle RDF. I donot know what is RDF [i have learnt it now], OWL, SPARQL etc...I need advice from experienced people about how to start with a simple applications etc...
    Please let me know if there is any good step by step tutorials and sample code. I have searched the entire web and i couldn't get a good sample code for Oracle RDF projects.
    May i know whether there is any such projects gets implemented in Oracle RDF or is that just a area for research?
    Why do we need Jena API? Why should i opt for Oracle RDF? By what means it is going to give me a performance boost? etc.. are some unanswered questions i still have in my mind.
    Thanks much in advance for your time....
    Regards,
    Sakthi.

    Hi Sakthi,
    My name is Jorge Barba, working in Support for Semantic Technologies.
    We have a set of notes that I can share with you so you can start implementing simple ontologies, I can also present to you a 1hour and a half presentation via remote web conference of Semantics and Oracle. If you are interested please send me an email at [email protected]

  • Oracle column store db

    I've heard that Oracle 12c will have a column store options similar to what companies like Vertica and SAP Hana have. In a very general question, is this available in the current Oracle 12c release? If so, is anyone using this feature and what is your opinion on the performance side for analytics, such as rapid slicing and dicing of the data.

    Hi,
    I think you may be referring to the new 'In Memory' option for 12c where oracle will store the data in memory in both 'normal' and columnar format to help with analytics queries (and general performance). This is the thing Larry referred to as 'ungodly speed'.
    This should be coming in 12.1.0.2 from what I heard which based on the normal release schedule is probably Q3 this year.
    Not sure if it will be a cost option or not but i would guess it will be.

  • Disadvantages of Oracle Forms

    Hello,
    I am searching for any disadvantages of Oracle Forms. Until now I have found that it is very old and the support for it will finish in 2013. Are there any other? thx
