Disappearing Footnotes

Hello,
I have the problem many people seem to with footnotes causing strange spacing in the main text (irresolvable through clicking all the 'widows' and 'keep lines together' options). I am willing to live with this, however, I have since found that all the pages in which there is 'wierd spacing' in the main text also fails to display one footnote. That is, some my footnotes are simply not appearing (even though they are referenced in the main text). IE Footnotes #47 is just not on the page.
This is not just a display/view problem, as the disappearing footnotes do NOT appear in print outs or pdfs. If I juggle around the spacing, the lost footnote will appear again, but others will disappear.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Would really appreciate any suggestions or help,
Thank you!

I appreciate your suggestion but it's not really good enough for an application that supposedly supports exporting to RTF with footnotes.
You take your dreams for reality but, as far as I know, Apple NEVER claims that RTF retains footnotes.
The Help states:
_RTF: RTF files retain most of the text formatting and graphics. You can open and edit RTF files in a word processor._
If I read well, "most" doesn't means "all" text formatting. Footnotes are one of the not retained formatting.

  • Disappearing footnote numbers in InDesign CS4

    Hi all,
This is my very first post here, and hope that this is the right place to expose my problem. Forgive me if this is not so. The thing is, some footnotes numbers (both in the text body and in the footnote) are nowhere to be seen in the pdf version, although everything looks OK in the .indd file. This happens only to some footnote numbers (in my case those ending in 1-3, ie. fn. 1, 2, 3; 11, 12, 13; 21, 22, 23, etc.), and when the indd file originated from a Word document. It does not happen, as far as I know, with InDesign documents created 'from scratch'. I have already tried copying the whole text, creating a new indd file and pasting the text there, but with no success. , This may turn out to be a glitch in ID CS4, as per here (he works with a Mac version; I use the Windows one, ver. 6.0.3).
In case this is useful, I work with MS Word 2003 (compatibility plugin with Word 2007 installed), and my OS is XP Pro.
I hope that you can help me out with this. Thanks in advance!

I'm more than happy to share glory with Eugene -- and tickled that my initial hunch about special digits bore fruit.  It turns out that the digits 1, 2, and 3 are in the PDF (or at least in the one I made from your .INX file): invisible in the PDF, they show up when I copy-and-paste them into Notepad.
Scholars cannot say enough good things about people like Peter Baker, who make available attractive fonts with the special characters essential for scholarship in the electronic era.  It ain't easy, as anyone can see by lurking on the Typophile forums (especially Build).  You might be interested in something John Hudson mentioned there, the set of fonts commissioned by the scholarly publisher E.J. Brill.  Much of that thread concerned the economic consequences of Brill's plan to distribute the fonts gratis, in itself a reflection of the amount of highly skilled work that goes into producing high-quality, high-character-count fonts.

  • Why do my footnotes keep disappearing on my new Macbook Air?

My footnotes keep disappearing on Microsoft Word, on my Macbook Air. I have only had the computer (and Word) for a week or so. Do you know why this is?
The footnotes do reappear when I close the document and reopen it, but it means I am unable to work uninterrupted!

I agree with -Sheridan- that this is an AutoRecover issue.  I write a lot of Word documents with footnotes and never had the "disappearing footnote" issue until I switched to an iMac and MS Word for Mac 2011 (which I bought together in December 2013).  I tried changing the footnote line spacing to "exact".  I tried unchecking all of the Word compatability rules.  None of that worked.  And, the footnote disappearance happened, like clockwork, at the same intervals as AutoRecover was saving my document (every 10 minutes), whether I was typing anything or not. I could tell when it happened because my document text and inserted photos would suddenly shift out of place and my footnotes would disappear.  (This only happens with footnotes of more than one line).
I also agree that it is safer to have AutoRecovery on, but I did not want to have to close out my document and reopen it (and realign the text) every 10 minutes so I turned it off.  I hope the maintainers of MS Word for Mac will see this and fix this obvious bug.

  • Half of my doc's citations won't show up on the bottom of the page as footnotes, while the other half is fine.

    Hello all,
I'm using Microsoft Word for Mac 2011. I've been working on a document with lots of citations, and it's the weirdest thing, but footnotes for citations 66 - 126 won't appear at the bottom of the page. All others (1-66, 126 and above) appear as they should,
on the bottom of the page where the data is located. So in other words, there are about four pages in my word doc that show
no footnotes, even though when I add a citation to the content, the superscript numerals show up. It's like the footnotes are hidden or something, but I just can't figure out how to get them to show.
Any and all help is so appreciated! Thanks.

    Hi,
Please check the settings of your paragraphs around the footnote reference using
Format > Paragraph > Line and page breaks: Keep with next, Keep lines together, Widow/Orphan control. Disable those that seem redundant.

  • Help!  Pages 09 save as Word document then footnotes gone

My book manuscript is due to the publishers TOMORROW and I'm converting my Pages chapters into Word chapters so that the evil PC universe can read them. In the conversion of one of my chapters, my footnotes are missing from the last half of the document. The footnote place numbers remain in the text, but there is no footnote information at the bottom of the page. But it is only doing this for half of the document.
Any suggestions for how to make this work? I'm desperate and freaking out just a bit.
    Thanks!

I don't know whether this will help, but it might give a pointer or two. When submitting a manuscript to a publisher as an email attachment, I have to convert it from Pages to Word first and this throws up an anomaly. It seems that Pages and Word have different ideas of what double-spaced 12-point actually means. My template is set up to deliver 25 lines per page in Pages, but when converted to Word, there are 26. To make the documents match, I have to reset Word's bottom margin to 3.5 cm from Pages' 2.54. That forces the last line onto the next page and the two files match exactly.
I don't know whether that explains where your footnotes are disappearing to, but it might be worth investigating.

  • Word import footnote failure

Hello. I have to import lots of Word documents (in .doc format, not .docx) with footnotes. In many cases, not all footnotes are imported. Some are rendered as a rectangle with a cross usually denotes a character unavailable in the present font. However, in this case, not font displays that mysterious character. With the footnote reference, the footnote itself disappears, too. In many cases, the footnote import just stops at some point in the document, all following footnote references are omitted. In other cases, footnote references are resumed after omitting some (usually one), continuing the count.
The errors seem independent of the type of .indd they are imported into and of the import settings (manual style mapping or no … ), but to depend entirely on the Word file. Each .doc produces the same mistakes whatever way the have been imported. I can't find any mistake in the .doc, though.
As you can of course imagine, this is most troublesome, since it requires to insert footnotes manually. Any idea on this would be greatly appreciated.
Word Version cannot be specified (Word files provided by clients; however, I could open and re-save them in Word 2008 for Mac, Version 12.1.0)
    InDesign 7.0.2
    Mac OS X 10.6.5

Yup -- been there, seen it, took some photo's for the album too.
I work with CS4 on a daily basis, and this is, unfortunately, not uncommon for that version too. It seems to depend on the version of Word that saved the files; for some clients, I have no problem at all, for another one, every single file fails to import correctly.
If you have a CS3 installed somewhere, or know someone who has, you can import the document with that and save as a regular ID file. Then open that with your version, and all the footnotes are there. (It works flawless with CS4, but the jump from CS3 to CS5 is at times too large; so, for safety/sanity reasons, open in CS5, export to IDML, open that again.)
If you don't have a CS3, you can try to open the document in Word and save as another format -- RTF might work. (Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.)

  • Exporting text to Word skips footnotes

Hello all. Working in 5.5. I have to export the text from an older book to Word, so we can send to the editor to update to a 2nd edition. Calloo, callay, oh frabjous day. ANYWAY, when I export the text, it skips the footnotes! It grabs the footnote markers but skips the footnote text. My editors are going bonkers. Any ideas?
    Thankee!

IDCS1?  ID2?  Been there, done that.  But don't rush into this.  Even if you have healthy footnotes in Word, InDesign has a nasty habit of "disappearing" a few on importing the Word file.  It doesn't happen with every file, but it happens more often than it should.  You might want to consider using separate files for body text and notes during editing to ensure you only have to cut-and-paste once.  Or maybe IDCS6, due imminently, will finally handle footnotes reliably.
Then there's scripting.  You could see whether Peter Kahrel's tools might help.  Marc Autret also wrote a couple of scripts that can move footnotes into the body of the text and then back out again into ID footnotes.
    Good luck!

  • Can I move footnotes up to be below text instead of at the end of the page?

I need to move my footnotes up to be placed below the text instead of at the bottom of the page. Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Ronny

You may disagree but, when a needed feature is unavailable, the only workaround is to use an other application offering it.
Here is a workaround for your problem.
When you exit the notes area, the enclosing rectangle disappear so maybe you will feel that this awful scheme may fit your needs.
Here is an alternate one :

  • Footnotes - Some not importing from Word.

    Hello, using CS6 here.
I am currently designing a 400 page book using a fully formatted Word file. I am importing the file into InDesign and setting all of the options properly—however after chapter 4 the footnotes disappear and are no longer in the imported text.
Chapters 1 thru 2 have the footnotes imported perfectly.
Any idea why this is happening? It is very frustrating and I am on a tight deadline.
    Please help!

thank you, peter. i tried that, as i do have CS2 on my computer. now there are new problems:
    1. When importing the complete file into CS2 it only imports half and for some reason the rest doesn't import...
    2. I tried importing the other formats into CS6 and it crashes every time, now...
    Frustrating...

  • Can footnotes span 2 columns?

I'm trying to set up a document that has two columns, and I'd like the footnotes to span the two columns at the bottom of the page.
    Any way to do this?

i tried it, but there seems to be aproblem in Indesign CS5.5? the numbers seems to be renumbered, and the original numbers disappear, leaving the first word of the footnote in superscript instead of the number.
but apart from that it works...
Anybody have tricks for getting these footnotes - with correct numbers into this fabulous separate story like the script says?

The chart for the new data appears briefly but when you scroll from that page ALL charts dissappear from the report. I tried to send a JGP of a successfull chart with no success. Additionally I just tried moving the data filtering to a new stored procedure to help reduce memory demands. The results were the same.

  • Preview pane has disappeared

    Preview pane has suddenly disappeared.

The 'Message Pane' can be displayed by:
    On the 'Menu Bar' toolbar
'View' > 'Layout' > select 'Message Pane'
Or quick method - toggle the view using '''f8''' key
or if using the menu icon
Menu Icon > Options > select 'Menu Bar' to enable it.
    Just as a footnote:
There is no 'Preview' pane. Those words imply that you get to see a 'preview' of an email before opening to read.
The 'Message Pane' shows a selected opened email.

  • Right-align footnote numbers

Is there a way to right-align footnote numbers so that they will align like this:
      1. Text of footnote
    12. Text of footnote
    123. Text of footnote
instead of like this (an abomination):
    1.   Text of footnote
    12.  Text of footnote
    123. Text of footnote
The obvious way would seem to be to add a tab as prefix (in Document Footnote Options|Numbering and Formatting) and set the tab as right-aligned in the paragaph style, but the dialog will not accept a tab (^t).
I can't see any way to set the alignment in the para style options either.
At the moment I use three paragraph styles Fn #, Fn ## and Fn ### with varying indents, but it’s cumbersome and unreliable having to reassign styles when footnotes are added or deleted.

In 2006-2007 I converted 32 publications from Ventura to InDesign. From 200 pages to 3,200 pages. I feel your pain. Ventura was a crazy program. I was updating things in Ventura. I'd save it and go home and then the next day half the book (not the changes just literally half the text from the book) had disappeared. Gone. So frustrating.
    Regarding indexing:
We outsourced our indexing to an indexer, we just gave him/her a pdf of the book and we a got an index back.
Similar to yourself, it has cases and statutes in all the books. So I've never really used the indexing feature, I have ledt that to a pro indexer. Hopefully someone else can you point you on that.
But if you need any more help converting from Ventura to InDesign let me know. I did a lot of automating of the books, chapter numbers, pages, numbered paragraphs, TOCs etc.
My proudest moment was using GREP to apply styles to the 3,200 page book. I opened all the chapters and applied master pages with variables for running heads (as they changed each page (cs3 came along just at the right time ). I then proceeded to GREP find and replace millions of text across literally thousands of pages. I applied all the styles to all the text in the right places in 2 days. It then took me 2 weeks to proofread my new document. Which had a few hic-ups but sorted quite easily.
So hopefully my little success story will inspire you some how.

  • Downloads disappear from folder

I have downloaded some music and when it has completed the task, the download file disappears. Hasn't done this before, files always remain in download folder.

    Launch Finder.
    Finder > File > Find
When the Finder window opens up, enter the name of the music file in the search box at the top right corner.
It will show up in the Finder under “Name”.
Right click on it and select “Reveal in Finder” from contextual menu.
The resulting Finder window will show the location.

  • On Screen Keyboard Glitch in Tablet Mode - On Screen Keyboard minimizes / disappears / slides down

    Hi there -
New Yoga owner here ( just bought it yesterday) and within minutes of setting the computer up I noticed that the on screen keyboard was malfunctioning when the yoga is in tablet mode. Specifically, it pops up for about a second and then, without me touching or clicking or doing anything, it quickly slides back down. repeated attempts to bring up the keyboard end up, frustratingly, with the same result. what is perplexing to me is the on screen keyboard works fine in laptop mode (when I need it least).
Someone else already started a post on this BUT it was marked as 'solved' (which it wasn't) so I figured I'd start new thread. The solution on the previous thread was to simply 'refresh' windows to get rid of any new drivers that were downloaded since purchasing the yoga, but I did not download or update anything prior to this problem arising (as I said, the problem seemed to occur within a few minutes of turning the machine on for the first time). In any case, I tried the refresh and it did not work so clearly my problem is not that I downloaded an incompatible or faulty driver. Please Help! I love this machine and I'm trying to see past the other flaws I've noticed so far (subtle screen flickering, inconsistent touch sensitivity etc), but this issue is starting to really undermine my confidence in the product quality and, from a productivity standpoint, it is a real deal breaker to not have full tablet functionality.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had the same problem with the disappearing virtual keyboard within hours of starting to use my new Yoga 13.  I read somewhere that it was a problem with an incompatible Synaptics driver, and when I looked in the control panel, it showed that the Synaptics driver had been updated on my Yoga as of the day I bought it.  I think somehow by agreeing to automatic updates of the software, the Synaptics driver is updated to an incompatible version.   So what I did was I removed the Synaptics driver, using the Windows program uninstaller tool, rebooted, and then found the Synaptics driver at the Lenovo site which is specifically labelled as the Yoga 13 driver.  I installed that, and the keyboard is now working fine.
