Disc Utility Messages

Hi Everybody!
Ok you Mac experts...riddle me this one...
In running my usual diagnostic for my system I recieve the exact SAME messages from Disc Utility, can anyone tell me what these mean?
Disc Utility message, OS 10.3.9
Determining correct file permissions.

We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/ColorSync/Profiles. New permissions are 16893
(1. This for ColorSync, Obviously, can I just delete the thing, I ALWAYS get an error message thru this...)
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util. New permissions are 33261
(2. This is from my brand spanking new Superdrive...no idea whatsoever...)
We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1
We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1
(3. completely lost on these two)
Thanks/ Merci

Disk Utility reports some messages that you can ignore when checking permissions
The messages seem to be covered by this support article, including:
"We are using special permissions for..."
"We are using a special uid for..."
These are status messages and not a cause for concern. The message(s) will appear each time you check permissions.

Many times I tried to simply update from 10.5.8 without any success. It starts and after few minutes ...
I used many different install disks (I bought ofiicial release from Mac seller), so I think this is not a problem with wrong version or bad install disk. A few days ago I've got back my computer from Apple  technical support and technician told me he had this same problem with system installation

It's not just you, I can't authorise my phone. It seemed to go down just after I started the update (it wasn't my fault though). I am using chrome, and it does not seem to be a firewall issue, or the bannerblock issue that I read about else where, since I dont have that program installed. Strange though how the support forum is still running. If I go to http://www.apple.com/support I get nothing, but googling topics allows me to see em.

  • Error message during installation of Lion..."The disc is not formatted for mac os extended (journaled).  But it is according to disc utility and won't finish installing.

I go to disc utility and verify and repair disc permissions.  Doesn't work.  I try to enable journalling but it isn't highlighted and am not able to do that as well.

I meet all those requirements.  core 2 duo and latest snow leopard.  I have a late 2006 mac book.  Maybe that's why.  Its telling me that my hard drive isn't formatted correctly but it is formatted as they ask.  It's not the hard drive that came with the macbook though.

  • Archive and Install/Disc Utility issues -

I'm currently spending a summer abroad in South America, and have had issues with my Macbook Pro (early 2011 version) no longer starting up after some virus experiences last week.  The computer hangs itself during loading on the white screen w/ grey apple and the spinning dial.  In contacts with Apple Care as well as some Mac-saavy friends, the following situations have been tried:
Opening in safe mode - The loading bar (added at the bottom of the grey apple screen) loads about 1/4 of the way, disappears, and the computer hangs itself.
Opening in single user mode - I run the recommended sbin/fsck -fy command to clean up the hard drive.  It comes back after having checked 6-7 parts, saying that the MacHD is in good shape, with a message following saying that something had been "modified" (forgive me for not remembering the correct verbage at present).  I then run the same command again, resulting in a message that the HD is clean and without error.  I then "reboot" and remain hung on the white screen w/ grey apple.
Opening in verbose mode - I reach the following lines of text, and then there is no further progress:
    enable
    IONetworkController::enable
    createMediumTables
    enable end
MacAuthEvent en0   Auth result for: 00:23:cd:1e:f2:c4 No Ack
same line as above saying "Auth timed out" at the end
Command+option+r+p - shock two or three times, (three startup chimes) and computer continues to hang itself in the normal spot.
    - So, at this point I took the advice of Apple Care and a few other friends, and tracked down a "retail copy" of Mac OSX (10.6.3) in order to try to do an Archive and Install or any sort of Disc Utility via the startup disc.
Inserting the disc and holding "c" at startup results in the cd drive whirring the disc for a few moments, and then remaining hung at the same white loading screen.
Holding "option" during the startup gives me the option of loading from the HD, or the disc.  Selecting the disc proceeds to whirr the cd drive, take me to the white loading screen with the grey apple, and... you guessed it... leaves the CPU hung.
My question is then, is my Macbook Pro unable to read this disc and execute Archive and Install/Disc Utility for hardware reasons as per the virus attack, or is the disc not compatible with my version of OSX (which I have since confirmed through my wife to be 10.6.6)?
Different sources have told me different things.  The local AASP in Uruguay sold me what they professed to be the "latest" version of OSX - the 10.6.3, what's more for $55 dollars instead of the lower cost as available in the states (between $15-$30), so I am reluctant to go back to them for advice when they seem more inclined to cash in on my inexperience (Mac owner of less than a month) than actually fixing my issue.  Apple Care told me that a standard "retail disc" should work, but I am assuming now that they believe I can snag the same version as initially came with my Macbook Pro.  Should I be looking to have my wife mail my original OSX install DVDs down here to resolve this problem?  Should 10.6.3-retail be working and is not for reasons I haven't identified?  I have since done some online research and found mentions that doing any sort of HD partitioning or OSX reinstalls can only be accomplished by utilizing a disc of an equal or more recent version of the OSX (examples that 10.4 can't work on a notebook preinstalled with 10.5, etc).  Does this translate to 10.6.3 not being able to function for my 10.6.6 MBP?
Any insight or thoughts would be much appreciated, as essentially all of my schoolwork and assignments are now trapped on an inaccessible HD.  Thank you for your time.
    - Joseph

I tried adding in a bunch of information about what your troubleshooting steps meant, but the server went into maintenance while I did. So, here it is again:
"Opening in safe mode - The loading bar (added at the bottom of the grey apple screen) loads about 1/4 of the way, disappears, and the computer hangs itself."
This is FSCK running, and gives you an indication of it's progress.
"MacAuthEvent en0   Auth result for: 00:23:cd:1e:f2:c4 No Ack"
This is either a failed DHCP request or ARP request.
    "Command+option+r+p"
         Command+Option+P+R - Resets PRAM. That's why p+r.
"Inserting the disc and holding "c" at startup results in the cd drive whirring the disc for a few moments, and then remaining hung at the same white loading screen."
This problem indicates that the disc is too old to boot your system. The reason for why this disc cannot boot is because it doesn't contain the necessary drivers for your model MacBook Pro. My mom and brother have similar models, and my brother had similar issues while in Japan. He went and got an install disc as well, which failed, I ended up stepping him through so that it would boot in Safe Mode, and then got it working in Normal Mode remotely.
FYI: Sophos has a free Mac Antivirus program, that is very processing friendly, and will scan in the background. You may wish to consider it as an alternative to Avast! if it continues giving you problems. Though I suspect it may be coincidence that your computer had problems shortly after Avast! cleaned up files. Let me know how it goes. You may wish to open up Disk Utility and check your S.M.A.R.T. Status. You want to make sure it says "Verified" If it doesn't say "Verified" then you have a problem.

Reset the iPod and place it in Disk Mode, then try restoring through iTunes.

  • Using Disc Utility to Make a Bootable Clone

    Need some help, please.
    OS 10.4.6.
I have an external hard drive partitioned to 3 volumes; I back up 3 computers on it to keep off site. Following instructions Kappy has posted, I initially set up as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
    7. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
    8. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    9. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
    10. Select the external volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    11. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Then when I would do a backup of one of the computers, I would essentially follow steps 4 - 11 above: erase and zero out that volume, and also make sure that the "Ignore Privilges" box was unchecked (Get Info) for the external volume I was backing up to (cloning to), and in Disc Utility/Restore, making sure "Erase Destination" is checked.
Also, I have always disabled Spotlight, and clone in Safe Mode (per some help Dr. Smoke has provided).
Had no problems making new clones until today. All 3 clones are at 10.4.6. Went to reclone one of my computers (just to make sure I was 100% current) so I could try 10.4.8, using the above sequence, and at about 3 minutes into the "restore" consistently got an error: "An error occurred (2) while copying. No such file directory."
Well, I erased again and tried again; rebooted and tried a 3rd time and a 4th and kept getting that same message.
Checked the website for the external and no new drivers out there.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
I did a CCC just to be safe, but MUCH prefer a Disc Utility clone ( I also have another external I do a Retrospect Duplicate on, but I really want a good solid Disc Utility non incremental, fresh of the hard drive clone).
    Thoughts?

  • Need to run Disc Utility - But dont have Boot disc to hand

    Hi,
I have run Disc Utility in OSX on my main hard drive and it says it needs repairing, so I need to boot of one of the install disc's, unfortunately I don't have these to hand at the moment (there at home & I'm not)
There must be a way round this e.g. creating a boot disc with Disc Utility on it etc.
    Any idea's?
    Thanks

Check out this info from Apple. Pay particular attention to Safe Boot and fsck. These operations perform steps that are somewhat like running disk repair while booted from your install disc.

    What problems are you experiencing?

  • Lion Disc Utility won't repair permissions

I purchased a MacBook Pro that came with Snow Leopard loaded.  I was given a free Lion upgrade, which I downloaded. When I ran Disc Utility to repair Permissions I get a long list of "library" errors that are supposedly repaired. However, when I ran it again to verify the repair, all of the errors were back. I did this 4 times, restarting twice, then called Apple who walked me through the repair and it still didn't work.
I surmise the errors are the result of loading Lion over Snow Leopard since my Mac Mini that came with Lion doesn't have the problem.  Are these library errors anything to worry about?  Anyone know if Apple's working on the problem?
    Thanks,
    Linda

  • Disc utility problems

Hello, ive done a bit of research on the internet on this and cant seem to find an answer so was hoping some of you guys could help me. Im trying to make it possible to boot from my ipod. I drag the file i want to boot from into the "source" bar and the ipod to "destination" under the restore tab in disc utility. I click the button what erases the ipod and then hit restore. After a few seconds I get the message "an error (2) occurred while copying (no such file or directory)" If i try this process while the source is mounted I receive a message saying the file is busy and then disc utility quits. Any help and advice would be very welcome.
    Thanks

Running Tiger on an iPod is more a party trick than something useful.
