Disk Permission Repair failure after partially successful update

The 10.5.2 update of my PowerBook G4 stalled at 'Writing Package Receipt'. After a hard reboot, I was able to access the desktop. The About This Mac showed 10.5.2 but there were no appropriate confirmation files in Receipts/boms or in the Console Log.
Attempting to complete the update using the Combo Package was not successful.
Tried to repair disk permissions from Disk Utility: never completed. So tried to repair permission using Disk Utility in the Leopard Installation DVD. This showed and warned that many of the permissions were changed and none of the permissions were corrected.
I have no clue what to do at this point other than an archive and install. Any suggestions from the wise folk who frequent this discussion board?

I finally resorted to an 'Archive and Install' option from the Leopard Installation DVD followed by Software Update. It installed 7 items including 10.5.2 Combo update. This was followed by the Graphics Update. I checked Installed Updates, Console and Library/Receipts/boms. All show that 10.5.2 was installed. I had a few anxious moments while the computer kept rebooting during the update process, but I kept my fingers away from the keyboard or power button! The update process did not take that long either.
Everything looks good to go-I will keep you folks informed if OS behavior is unusual.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  • Disk Utility repair failure: You need to restart your computer. Hold down...

    While trying to backup my macbook pro (running 10.5.8 leopard). I kept getting the gray window that forced me to shut down my computer. After some research, I conluded that I needed to check my HDD for damage. I ran the Verify Disk option (Repair Disk option was not yet "clickable"), and it says
    First Aid Failed
    stopped verifying HD because the following error occured:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed.
    In the text box below that, it says
    "(It should be 771886 instead of 771889)
    Invalid volume directory count
    (It should be 148275 instead of 148272)
    The volume Macintosh HD needes to be repaired.
    ERROR: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
    I then tried the Repair Disk Permissions option and it came up with three difference
    Library/application support/proapps
    System/Library/privateframeworks/browserkit.framework
    System/Library/privateframeworks/prokit.framework
    (I can give more information on these three if that would help at al)
    In the Verify Disk error, it says that it needs to be repaired, but the repair disk option is still not clickable. I don't know what to do from here. Is there someone more tech savvy than I who can help?

    You cannot do rewpairs from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782?viewlocale=en_US
    Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Disk permission repair

    Repair does not fix extremely long list ....multiple runs end with Permission Repair Complete but the list is long and the same, sample of one item below....all items start with "ACL found but not expected..."
    ACL found but not expected on “Library/QuickTime/AppleIntermediateCodec.component”
    Repaired “Library/QuickTime/AppleIntermediateCodec.component”

    At the bottom of your list is the key...
    Resolution
    You can safely ignore these messages. You can also usually ignore any "ACL found but not expected..." message. These messages can occur if you change permissions on a file or directory; they are accurate, but generally not a cause for concern.
    I did change the permissions after the Time Machine restore and that has probably caused this event....thank you...Paladin26

  • Migration Tip - File Loading Issues solved by Disk Permission Repair

    Had a huge problem with Excel files after migrating old iMac to new iMac via migration assistant using time machine backup of old iMac (external drive). After migration, old excel version did not work but we had alread purchased a new 2011 home version.  Installed Excel 2011 after migrating and none of the Excel files would load on new iMac, from either machine - a pop up message said it could be a bunch of things, read only, etc...  Numbers would access the Excel files, and could export to xls file type, but still the Excel file would not load in Excel.
    From a thread suggestion, I ran the Disk Utility First Aid tab Verify Disk Permissions - holy cow, must have been two gazillion permission issues on a brand new machine - selected Repair Disk Permissions once the Verify list came up, and voila, all good on the Excel files now - they load fine.
    (I assume that some of you actually know what happens and can explain it - something maybe about "cloning" the account from the Time Machine backup of my old iMac and not using a new account on the new machine, or something.  Whatever, it seems that a new disk should not have two gazillion permission errors and that my migration from the Time Machine backup created them, and Disk Utility fixed them - all except two permissions that did not fix properly: itunes..../iPodUpdater and usr/lib/ruby - I assume those must be managed manually somehow if Disk Utility will not repair.)

    Nice tip/report thanks!
    Likely a different User UID owned those files, first user generally gets 501, second gets 502, etc., so as a rule, only one of them would have rights to the files.

  • Disk utility repair failure

    Hello
    I have a 1.8Ghz - G5- with OSX10.3.9, and it is sometimes slow when using Iphoto on an external drive, and it sometimes wakes up right away by itself when i use the sleep function ( it will usually go to sleep on the second try when that happens)
    I have dissconnected all the peripherals, and I tried to run disk verification , and disc repair. Both stop at 1/3 of the way and i get the message " disk utility has lost its connection with disk management tool and cannot continue"
    any suggestion on how to proceed will be appreciated. I can use the computer and it has no symptoms other than being sometimes slow and sometimes needing two try before going to sleep.
    The hard drive is about four years old. But, I have a second internal HD which could be used to install a copy of OSX10.3.9

    I'm resurrecting this post, which I found after experiencing a similar Disk Utility failure while checking permissions. I followed eww's advice.
    In my case the log appeared to point to a problem with 'Flash Player.plugin' which I removed and could then complete repair of permissions from some recent installations.
    Replacing the file led to a repeat of the problem when re-running Disk Utility to see what happened.
    Am I to assume I need to remove the file every time I check permissions in future or is it worth trying a fresh download?

  • Startup failure after the mass updates install

    Hello MacWorld:-)
    I really hoped I will never have to post anything here as long as I have Mac:-) and for almost a year nothing happened, everything worked smooth and easy. But several days ago I decided to install a number of updates, like about 10. The updates for the MacOS default applications plus this huge (300 Mb) update for the MacOS itself.
    The only problem with this update was I couldn't download couple updates and I decided to leave them for a future reference. Well...after I rebooted my MacMini I saw a usual boot apple and spinning sign and that's it. A startup stuck on this stage. I waited like 30 mins or more and I thought 'Gosh...I wish I never install these updates....
    Now after trying to reboot it several times, holding Shift or C while a startup, holding windowsalt+PR at the same moment I gave up. The matter fact is I don't have a Mac keyboard, so I use USB Genius wireless keyboard+mouse. And I assume it may cause troubles with my attempts to boot at the safe mode or from the distibution disk #1.
    Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4)

    ok I found how to fix the black sreen problem.
    1. you need another MAC
    2. Go to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303469 and follow the instuctions.
    You need to download the "Firmware Restoration CD 1.2" from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
    good luck!

  • Lenovo G780 stuck in Automatic Repair Loop after Windows 8 update

    My recent Windows 8 update stuck my computer into an infinite automatic repair loop which results in a blue screen amd the process repeats itself. I tried the OneKey restore feature and the system recovery feature just hangs then it goes back to the same loop issue with rebooting. I called Lenovo for recovery discs since I don't have any any but my concern is does it matter if I mentioned whether I had a 32 or 64 bit OS? I told her to make sure it was for a Windows 8 system amd she just said it works for the G780 models. I'm just hoping these discs work.for a 64 bit system

    It should work. Support cannot send you recovery disks if you didn't provide them your serial number. They can check the correct pre-installed OS from your serial number so I'm sure they're sending out the correct disks.

  • Disk Full on server after running "Schedule Updates" on OS Image

    Looking for advice after filling up our sccm server hard-drive as a result of running a "Schedule Updates" against an OS image
    Running SCCM 2012 R2. Site server disk partitioned as 4 drives, with E: drive holding program files, sccm binaries, etc, and G: drive holding all content
    At close of play yesterday, I ran the "schedule update" option against one of our OS Images (Win7 Pro x64). When I arrived this moring, I noticed that this had reported a status of "failed" ("failed to find or access the update binaries
    to be applied on the image"). I also noticed that our E: drive on the sccm server is now full. There are 2 folder created yesterday which look like they have been created as a result of the Schedule Update:
    E:\WSUS\WsusContent - 88Gb
    E:\ConfigMgr_OfflineImageServicing - 4.6Gb
    Is it ok just to manually delete these folders? Or is there an option within the SCCM console where I can clean up these folders?
    Lastly, is there a way to configure the "Schedule Updates" option to point to a specific disk/folder to store and service the offline image, so that this is done on the much bigger G: drive?
    Thanks
    Stan

    Yep. That rule will approve everything and cause everything to be downloaded.
    Safe? It's not going to break anything in ConfigMgr if that's your definition of safe here. As mentioned, it's not needed or required by ConfigMgr to deploy updates and having it enabled is useless (as far as ConfigMgr is concerned). Once you disable the
    rule, the checkboxes on the advanced tab are irrelevant.
    If you leave this rule enabled, yes, your wsuscontent folder will continue to grow.
    To reduce its size, you should go and set all approved updates to "Not Approved" and then run the WSUS cleanup Wizard. That will delete nearly all of the update binaries from the WSUSContent folder. As mentioned, EULAs will still exist there but
    these are very small size wise so won't be a big deal.

  • Violation of Primary Key after a successful Update of BP

    When I've updated a BP via VB.net is there something I should do with the BP object after I've done an update?
    I can't seem to do consecative updates or I get the following error:
    Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'CRD1_PRIMARY'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'CRD1'
    This is the code I use for updating:
    For i = 0 To oBusinessPartner.Addresses.Count - 1
                oBusinessPartner.Addresses.SetCurrentLine(i)
                If (oBusinessPartner.Addresses.AddressType = SAPbobsCOM.BoAddressType.bo_ShipTo) Then
                    '** Check only SHIP TO Addresses
                    If (oBusinessPartner.Addresses.AddressName = cbSAPShipTo.SelectedItem) Then
                        '** Address User wishes to update
                        oBusinessPartner.Addresses.AddressType = SAPbobsCOM.BoAddressType.bo_ShipTo
                        oBusinessPartner.Addresses.AddressName = lSAPAddressItems(iIndex).Company
                        oBusinessPartner.Addresses.Street = lSAPAddressItems(iIndex).Address1
                        oBusinessPartner.Addresses.City = lSAPAddressItems(iIndex).City
                        oBusinessPartner.Addresses.ZipCode = lSAPAddressItems(iIndex).Postal
                        oBusinessPartner.Addresses.State = lSAPAddressItems(iIndex).Prov
                        oBusinessPartner.Addresses.Country = lSAPAddressItems(iIndex).Country
                    End If
                End If
            Next
            lRetCode = oBusinessPartner.Update()
    I check to make sure the address i want to up date is a ShipTo address, then I check to make sure that the item I am editing matches the one in the BPObject's CurrentLine.
    Then I just change the values and .Update() it
    After I've done this though, if I try to update another ShipTo address in the same BP, it comes up with that error.
    Should I kill the BP object and reinitialize it?

    Hi Tyler,
    I totally understand what you wanna do.
    The clauses which you use is trying to add a new address in the name of existing address.
    You have to do 'setcurrentline' clause, I guess.
    But now, you don't know 'what is the ShipTo line'.
    Then, I think you'd better use some simple, easy but timely expensive way.
    1. Count the records in CRD1 under conditions of the cardcode.
    -> then you can get the number of addresses of the business partner.
    2. use a loop (while, for.. doesn't matter.)
    -> Now you can use setcurrentline clause.
    3. If the addressname is 'ShipTo', then you can update the record, and exit loop.
    pseudo code comes below.
    sql = "Select count(*) FROM OCRD WHERE cardcode = 'aaa'"
    ors.doquery sql
    for i=1 to ors.fields.item(0)
    oBusinessPartners.Addresses.setcurrentline(i)
    if obusinessPartners.Addresses.AddressName = "ShipTo" then
    oBusinessPartners.block = "newBlock"
    exit for
    end if
    next i
    Hope this useful for you.
    Regards,
    Hyunil choi.

  • Battery failure after downloading battery update 1.2

    Last night I downloaded the battery update for my Macbook; however, after doing so there was a 'X' showing over my battery. Whenever I unplug the laptop, the computer shuts down and does not read that there is a battery present at all. I have tried taking the battery out and putting it back in, but I can't figure out how to get my computer to read the battery again.

    First try resetting the PMU/SMC.

    Read the many threads here about holding down the home key to shut down Safari next time you use it, and also deleting and re-creating any Push accounts you may have.
    Hold down the home key for 8 seconds when exiting safari seems to fix the problem for many.

  • Repair disk permission have deleted forlders on my external hard. What can I do to retrive data ?

    I've ran a "disk permission repair" on my external hard drive and some folders have disapeared! Help!

    Hello! Thanks for your response. So I've simply repaired permission on a WD 1TB external HD (it's formatted NTFS). Didn'nt format the drive or delete anything on it. I did this on my brand new imac 27. I did this for all my drives without any problem. Somehow, on this disk, some folders have disapeared. These are my memories, my personnal digital pictures from 2003-2009. Anything after 2010 is fine. When I check the volume, I see there is only 60gb left on the 1tb. Somehow, when I try to copy the whole content or what I see, i see that only 560gb is being transferred/copied on the other HD. In short, it seem like the files are till there but I can't see them. I've tried on another mac and even on a pc. Nothing. They must be somewhere ?!? Any idea ? I've tried some "undelete" software btu they can't find anything but always the same 12 pictures...
