Disk utility message...what does it mean?

Hello all
Been having a few problems with my mac book pro since iphoto (bane of my existance) crashed. Problems with iphoto are ongoing discussion on this forum - but I seemed to have concurrent issue with the computer - when I restart the dock loses word and a couple of other things, and a large question mark appears, claiming to be imovie (when infact Imovie is next door). It also no longer seems to be 'retrieving space in my file vault' when I shut down.
I ran disk utility and had a series of repaired permissions, then ran verify disk and got the following:
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Volume Header needs minor repair
d.",1)
Macintosh HD
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
Which clearly implies the volume needs repair---wasn't running disk utility off the dvd, so no repair option was visible. (The original disk is at home some distance away) Can anyone tell me if the above implies major surgery required, hence a shop, or whether I might be able to deal with it from the original dvd, once I head home in the new year?
Thanks
Vx

Vx,
No, a disk error is just that, and not generally caused by anything you may have done (unless you are in the habit of forcing shutdowns while copying or otherwise writing files, etc.). Likewise, it won't be caused by "bad" files. Actually, the opposite is true; disk errors create bad/corrupt files.
More specifically, a disk error occurs when the "index" that describes each and every file on your hard drive, and the actual physical locations on disk of the data associated with those files, fails in some way. This can be caused by some random write error at a critical point in time, or it can less frequently be caused by a true "dead spot" on the surface of the drive platter (a "bad block" or sector. You only need worry about this if the error recurs after a format).
I will second Sig's suggestion that you attempt to repair the error using Disk Utility's command line interface, while booted into "Single User Mode." Please follow his instructions for doing so, if you want to make this attempt. I will state, however, that I am pretty certain that in any case where the "Verify" function fails with the error you have reported, Disk Utility probably won't be able to make the repairs.
If this becomes an emergency, you can use one of the more powerful and flexible third-party utilities, such as Diskwarrior. They can be pretty pricey, but they can often make repairs when Disk Utility cannot.
Once you have erased that hard drive and reinstalled OS X, you can indeed copy back or otherwise re-import all of your backed up data. If at all possible, do try to make another backup copy of anything and everything in your current HOME folder before erasing that drive.

  • HT201210 startup disk is full-what does this mean and what do I do?

When syncing my iphone I get an error message that said my start up disk was full.  Now it won't backup my phone to my computer.  What does that mean and what do I do?

Click on your hard drive once. Then File > Get Info.  What does it report there for space (capacity and "available")? Have you emptied the Trash (Finder > Empty Trash)?  If you have truly filled up you hard drive then it is critical you copy files off onto an external hard drive soon.  Macs need a lot of free drive space at all times and you may experience frequent crashes, slow down, and file loss if you don't free up space (15+ GB at all times at least)..

  • TS2972 apple tv can't sign in to iTunes Store until the network time has been set. this is an Apple generated message. what does it mean? how can i fix it? very very very simple questions but there is no reasonable answer from Apple anywhere on the intern

this is an apple generated message. simple!
what does it mean? so far no one at apple has a clue.
how do i fix it? nothing even begins to address this issue so far. generalities about system setup show a lack of respect for customers. yes my system is plugged in and i have reset and rebooted and rechecked everything. i need help because this a real problem that needs a real solution, not more platitudes.
help please, not more wasting of my time. i have spent an entire afternoon on this already.

this is exactly the kind of response i expected, almost begged support to please not do this to me and yet there it is another meaningless, non helpful, standard template response to restart my apple tv.
this does NOT work which is why i am contacting you. i have tried all suggestions about unplugging and restarting and nothing works.
i live in an apartment and logon to the provided wifi wireless. so i do not have access to a router. however, management says they have talked with their provider and have been assured that the required ports are available.
remember all the jokes about how bad windows was because the solution was always to re boot. funny huh? how is apple any different.
i have been to the local apple care store and they are clueless, too.
should we just end it here and you admit that i will not be getting any support from apple on this one? i got the ipad because my kids were such big fans. it is difficult for me to share their enthusiasm.
at this point i am just curious about how you say you cannot support your own product so i can complete my file on this contact.
thanks...sorry it was you who got this problem..

I found out that happens to me when my IPhone is trying to retrieve mail at the same time as other apps. Either my Yahoo! mail page is up at work or I left my Mail.app open at home. If I try a few minutes later it's usually cleared up.

  • Permissions Warning Message -- What does this mean?

I was helping my mother (over the phone) to Repair Permissions in Disk Utility since her Mac Mini was experiencing some odd glitches like not being able to restart or shut down. Everything else seems to work fine.
When repairing permissions she got this message:

Does anyone know what this means and if it could be the source of her problem? She is using OS 10.6.0 Snow Leopard, updated recently from OS 10.5 Leopard at an Apple Store. Thanks.

  • DiskWarrior Error Message - What does this Mean??

Maybe this has been touched on, but I can't find it. I get this message when I try to repair permissions with DiskWarrior 4.1 on Mac Pro with 10.5.5. It's always worked before, but now?? I can rebuild directory OK, I can check all files and folders, etc. with DW. I can also Repair Permissions OK with Disk Utility, and repair disk with DU. Everything but permissions. I've booted from a Clone and ran DW from that to my target HD. I even zapped the PRAM. Any ideas??

I got that error just once, when running permissions from the computer, before the CD arrived. The second time I ran it I got no error. I think I had some programs open/running at the time.
You might ask alsoft about it, unless others here have a fix or have seen the same error.

I just got a new Mac and wanted to transfer my old iTunes library to it.  After a night of attempting to import the old library to the new Mac it said that the library was damaged and subsequent restarts yielded the 13010 error.  I deleted everything listed, did a number of iTunes reintalls and the only thing that has allowed iTunes to continue is to dig up a backup library (which is in progress now).  Barring this working, how can I get it so that iTunes boots again as if it is factory fresh?

HI. I keep getting this warning that my startup disk is full -- but I just recently deleted many files. how do I fix?

    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or Mobile accounts to store their "stuff.”
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.

  • Disk is full - what does that mean

Where can I delete items that are not used because I keep getting "disk is full"

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • I have a new hp 2050 printer and received a 10.0000 supply memory error message. what does this mean

I have a new hp 2050 printer and received a 10.0000 supply memory error message. Can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it?

mickeymackey, this error looks similar to a related error code that I found for laserjets. Here is a summation of that error code:
    http://goo.gl/W7dP6
This describes the problem as being a cartridge error, in which case I would follow the instructions in this document and see if that resolves the issue:
    http://goo.gl/h6hWz
that does not resolve the issue, then I would recommend performing a hard reset of the printer. This would involve unplugging the printer for thirty seconds from both the back of the unit as well as from the outlet it is plugged into and then plugging the machine back in and powering it on.
A few additional questions are: Is this printer plugged into a surge protector, wall outlet or battery backup? The ink you are using, are they original HP cartriges or have they been refilled before?
    Let me know!
