Display profiles - where from?

I have a whole boatload of profiles that show up in system prefs>displays>color.  Many seem to refer only to printer/paper combinations. Where do these come from, and how can I remove the ones that are just irrelevant to my setup?

Hi, not on 10.8 at the moment, so I can't be sure the locations are the same, but...
/Library/Printers/
/Library/ColorSync/
Be careful not to delete needed ones.

I am wondering if there are any known issues with making monitor profiles for the new intel mac laptops?
I have created a display profile for my new MacBook Pro.
The profile gives me a pronounced pink magenta cast when i open my images in Photoshop Cs2 & Cs3.
I am satisfied that my colour settings in Cs2 & Cs3 are correct.
I have a good knowledge of Color Management & how to implement it into my workflow.
I cross checked some sample images on My old desktop G4 mac & also on my Windows pc both using Crt monitors.
The image's were fine on both machines and merely highlighted how wrong the display profile was on the Laptop.
I took the monitor profile out of the loop in Photoshop by doing a View>Proof Setup>Monitor RGB & checked "preserve colour numbers".
This allowed me to check the black point & gamma & they seemed fine.
But when I brought the display profile back I had the cast again.
I have checked Profilemaker 5.0.8 & my Eye-One pro by using them to update the profile & calibration on my Apple G4 desktop mac & also on my old Dell pc.
In both cases the Monitor's connected are Crt as opposed to Lcd.
The resulting Profiles were fine & as expected not different from the previous profiles made using the same eye-one & Profilemaker 5.0.7
I have also very recently created an output profile for my epson printer which also seemed perfect.
That seems to suggest that the Profiling software & hardware are working perfectly.
That narrows things down to the MacBook Pro.
Incidentally if I set the default Apple supplied "Color Lcd" as the system display profile the images display perfectly with no cast.
I also created a new user account on my MacBook Pro in case there was conflict with some of the other software on my system.
Again in this separate account the default Color Lcd profile resulted in a very close match between how the sample images looked on the laptop screen & both Crt displays.
I have tried various ways of creating the profile for the Laptop in Profilemaker 5.0.8 but apart from some differences in Luminosity I still end up with the pink cast creating profile.
Any body got any ideas or similar experiences.
I cheked with Gretmacbeth & they said as far as they are concerned it's probably a mac issue. They claim that it is usually a video driver that apple will quietly update without any declaration

I don't know the answer to your question, however I tried using my MonacoOptix device on my 17" MBP, and I get a severe green cast! I was thinking it was probably some incompatibility because my device and software are a few years old now, but wonder now what device/software might make a good profile on the new MBP's???

  • Display profiles via a pull down menu from menu bar?

I'm often switching my display profiles on my iBook-- depending on sunlight, lighting conditions, etc.
Is there any software or Apple setting that would give me a pull down menu of my choices from the menu bar?
Right now I have the monitors or whatever it is on my menu bar, but that requires multiple steps-- selecting Displays Preferences, waiting for it to come up, then clicking on the Color Tab, and finally picking one of the display profiles.
I'd much rather have a one-step pull down menu. Anything like that?
Also what does "Recent Items" mean in that menu?

Open the AppleScript Utility in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and check the box to display the script menu. One of the choices in the script menu under ColorSync will enable you to change your display profile. If you know the names and paths of the profiles, additional scripts can be created that would change it in a single step. The lines of code needed are:
    tell application "ColorSyncScripting"
    run
set display profile of display 1 to alias "path:to:profile"
    quit
    end

  • Display profiles and soft proofing Windows RGB / Monitor RGB

This might have asked before, but I did not find any definite answer for this. Sorry this gets a bit long.
    Short question:
What's the difference between softproofing with Windows RGB and Monitor RGB targets? I see differences in my image between these targets.
    Long question(s):
Here's some reasoning.. let me know when I go wrong.
I have hardware calibrated my display Spyder 3 elite to sRGB standard. I have understood that the generated display profile contains a LUT table that affects gamma values for each RGB component, so that affects both gamma and color temperature. That table is loaded into video card when Windows starts. In addition to the LUT table, the display profile contains what? Probably information on what color space the display has been calibrated to. Does that matches directly with the LUT table information, but may deviate from sRGB in the case my monitor cannot reproduce sRGB 100%?
Now if I have image that that is in sRGB, but the embedded sRGB profile has been stripped away, should any non color management aware image viewer show the colors properly, if it is assumed that 1) my monitor can handle full sRGB space and 2) my monitor was succesfully calibrated to sRGB and the LUT table has been loaded into video card?
Or does it still require a color management aware program to show the image, which implies that the LUT table information alone is not enough and the display profile contains some extra information that is needed to show the image correctly? I would think this is true, as I needed to turn on color management in Canon Zoom Browser to see images in it the same way as in Photoshop.
Now to the original question, what's the difference in Photoshop when soft proofing with Windows RGB and Monitor RGB targets
    I read from www.gballard.net that
Photoshop can effectively "SoftProof" our web browser color:
Photoshop: View> Proof SetUp> Windows RGB
Photoshop's Soft Proof screen preview here simulates how unmanaged applications, web browsers, will display the file on 2.2 gamma monitors, based on the sRGB profile. If the file is based on sRGB and our monitor gamma is 2.2 and D/65 6500 degrees Kelvin, we should see very little shift here, which is the goal.
Photoshop: View> Proof SetUp> Monitor RGB
THIS IS WHERE the color-brightness-saturation problem will repeat consistantly.
Soft Proofing Monitor RGB here strips-ignores the embedded ICC profile and Assigns-Assumes-Applies the Monitor profile or color space.
The color and density changes seen here show the difference between the monitor profile and the source profile sRGB.
I'm not sure how to read that. Assume here that my monitor has been calibrated to sRGB and the PS working space sRGB. Do in both cases photoshop strip away color profile from the image at first? What happens after that? Does in Windows RGB case Photoshop pass the color values as they are to display? What does it do in "Monitor RGB" case then? Does it assign my monitor profile to the image? If it does, does there also happen conversion from one color space to another? In either one conversion there must happen as the soft proofing results are different. Does either one cause "double profiling" to the image as the monitor is already calibrated?
    Thanks

Windows defaults to sRGB if you don't calibrate your monitor so untagged sRGB files should display (more or less) correctly in applications that don't know about color management on systems with uncalibrated monitors.
When proofing against Windows RGB you're proofing against sRGB, it will show you how applications that don't know about color management on an uncalibrated monitor will show the image. This is what you proof against if you want to see how the image will display in web browsers.
When you proof against Monitor RGB, Photoshop will assign your monitor's icc profile to the image which tends to be utterly useless most of the time.

  • Factory Display Profile Trashed By Accident

I please need your help. Today I thought I'd re-calibrate my display, did a little housekeeping and I accidentally trashed the iMac G5 factory icc profile. Now when I go to calibrate the display I get: The factory profile for the display could not be found. The display has gone from gorgeous to all washed-out.
Does anyone know where to find this specific profile on the iMac G5 install disc or do I find it on the Tiger install disc? I have a great 3rd party program called Pacifist which allows one to extract files from the install discs without doing an archive and install; I just can't seem to find it. One more thing, I also need to know where to put this file back into the system, that's if it can be found and extracted. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
All photography editing has unfortunately been suspended for now. I need that profile...
    Barb

FWIW, I had to do an Archive and Install from the Tiger disc. Couldn't find the specific iMac profile anywhere using the 3rd party Pacifist application, although that app is excellent for extracting other files. It must have been buried somewhere deep within the system.
So....the lesson learned is to be extremely careful when cleaning out your old display profiles or the calibrator for the display will no longer function. By all means, keep the iMac profile. I thought it was a profile I created, now I know it wasn't.
It's nice to have things back to normal!

  • Display profile for Cinema Display

Hi there. I'm producing photographic images (for eventual print) and the print company is using Apple Cinema Displays their end (me: a Samsung SyncMaster 913V).
There seems to be a great difference between what I see on my screen and what they see on theirs. My question is: would it help for me to install an Apple Cinema Display profile on my G4 to get a more accurate representation of their results? If so, where can I download this and to where?
Many thanks for any help you can offer!
    Jo

Without using an optical calibration package from Gretag, Colorvision, etc you might get close but your still not going to get optimal results. Your eyes will constantly adjust to what they think is white, red, green and blue and tell your brain you have it right when in fact you dont.
If your serious about getting this right then an optical measuring tool is required.

  • Display Profiles

Not entirely sure where this topic should be posted...
I seem to be having an issue with display profiles/preferences. All of a sudden, when I switch from one user account to another the display appears way too bright, and the system doesn't apply the correct monitor profile, showing "Generic RGB Profile" in system preferences. Selecting "Calibrate" from the display prefs, it says, "Can not calibrate the display" and "The factory profile for the display could not be found." I have calibrated/profiled the display with a Monaco EZcolor and all seemed fine for a while. On reboot, the profile reverts to the correct one.
    Thanks

The script works. Not sure what happened the first time I ran it. Test it out, and see if it works for you.
Paste this into a new Script Editor document. Save it as either a script or application. A script will allow you to run it from the Script Menu, while apps can be added to the Login Items and run from the Script Menu.
    ===============
display dialog "Running DMProxy Color Bug Fix. You may be asked for the password of an administrator on this Mac."
do shell script "/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks /CoreGraphics.framework/Versions/A/Resources/DMProxy" with administrator privileges
display dialog "DMProxy color fix applied."
    ===============
This script will run DMProxy without launching the Terminal, so you will not have to close it when done. That's what I like about it. I'm going to use it from now on.
The script will let you know that it is running, and that you will be asked for an admin password. You can remove the second "display dialog" line, at the bottom, if you don't want to be notified when it's finished. The first one should stay in place, however, because you always want to know why you are being asked for a user name and password. Without the dialog, "System Events" will be asking you for a password, and you will not know why. Never enter a password unless you know why, as malware could potentially ask you for a password, and entering without knowing what it's for is dangerous.
    Good luck with the script!

  • Iphoto does not use the proper display profile

    Hello.
I just bought a 20' Apple Cinema display and connected it to my Macbook. I have noticed a very strange behavior of iPhoto and Preview.
I will first describe the expected (right behaviour).
When I drag an image opened in Adobe LG or Aperture from the Macbook display to the Cinema display (or the opposite) after a very small delay the color of the image adapts to the color profile of the display where it was dragged. Which is the correct the behavior.
With Preview or iPhoto this adaptation does not happen and the image is displayed with the right profile only on one of the 2 display. Besides being a very annoying issue, the very strange thing is how you can choose on which one of the displays the image gets displayed with the right display color profile:
    - With Preview, the display color profile used (for both displays) is selected based on which is the default display in ColorSync display settings.
    - With iPhoto, the display color profile used (for both displays) is selected based on which display the munu bar is (!!!). That is, if you want to have your image displayed with the right display profile on your cinema display, then you MUST have the menu bar on that display. If the menu bar is on the Macbook display the image on the cinema display will be displayed with the display profile of the Macbook display. Crazy!
You can try all of the above remembering that after any change you need to quit and reopen iphoto or preview or ColorSync for the settings to apply.
My question is: why neither iPhoto nor Preview act in the right way like Aperture or Adobe LG? Or at least, why iPhoto does not behave like Preview allowing me to choose where I want the menu bar without having this choice affecting the display color profile used to display my images?
    Thank you,
    Marco

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. • Display profile and scaled display

I have a 13 inch mid 2014 macbook pro retina. Anyway, Im curious about the display profiles (i.e. color lcd, adobe, generic, and sRGB). Which is the default one? Will using one or the other help to keep my battery usage low? Same thing with the scaled resolution options. Will these help to lengthen battery life by a couple hours?
Id like to find a way to make my macbook last longer on battery. Apple says they last about 9 hours but Ive been noticing its about 6 or 7 really, and thats with the brightness pretty low and with only safari open and watching a movie.
    Thanks for your help

Color LCD is the correct choice. That is the profile made for the display at the factory.
The only time you want to choose something else is if you have generated a customized profile using calibration hardware. Using a calibrator is usually important to photographers and designers doing color-critical work, but not necessary for users in general. The sRGB and Adobe RGB profiles are there for other uses (like photo editing) and must never be chosen for the monitor.
The color profile has zero effect on battery life. Scaled resolution might, but I doubt it.
The Apple Store page describes their battery rating: "The wireless web test measures battery life by wirelessly browsing 25 popular websites with display brightness set to 12 clicks from bottom or 75%. The HD movie playback test measures battery life by playing back HD 720p content with display brightness set to 12 clicks from bottom or 75%...Battery life varies by use and configuration. "
It is plausible to get less than 9 hours if certain factors are affecting the load on the computer. For example, if you've installed background processes that might use a little CPU all the time, like monitoring utilities, system customizers, or sometimes drivers for peripherals. Also, I am not sure whether the Apple test has Bluetooth on or off. In the Apple test, the movie is being watched in iTunes (using QuickTime), but if you are watching your movie through a different player like YouTube (which uses Flash) or Netflix (which uses Silverlight), the Flash and Silverlight technologies may drain the battery at a different rate than iTunes Quicktime.
I think 6 or 7 hours is OK if you are using other applications like PowerPoint or Photoshop. Anything involving graphics is going to drain the battery faster than office apps or music.
I have gotten very long battery life on trains and airplanes where there's no wifi, because I shut off wifi and Bluetooth and turn the brightness down when the cabin is dark. Under those conditions you might get at least 10 hours of battery if the CPU isn't under a significant load.

  • ColorSync - Display Profile Affect Importing?

    Hi,
I hope someone can answer this question for me. When you import photos into iPhoto, does your current Display Profile (in System Preferences) have any affect on the ColorSync profile added to your photos? For example, if you imported one batch of photos, then changed your Display Profile, would photos imported from then on have a different ColorSync profile put into them? Or does it not matter?
I really want to start importing photos into iPhoto, but I'm very concerned that my current Display Profile will get embedded into every single photo.

It only adds a profile to a file if that file does not already contain one. If the file has a profile assigned by the camera iPhoto does not override the existing profile.
However, if you edit a file and then drag it to the Desktop it will contain the profile that the monitor is set to. I just ran a test on two files that were stripped of their profile, imported into iPhoto, edited and then dragged to the desktop. I had previously set my monitor to the Adobe RGB profile and the end image files contained the Adobe profile.
Bottom line is: the original file imported must not have a profile assigned and be edited before iPhoto will assign one (to the modified file).
At least that's what's happening on my present setup. You can check it out if you have any files without a profile. I used i iView MediaPro to strip the profile from the files for my tests. You can download and use it in the demo mode to run tests yourself. User the Action->Manage Color Profiles menu option.
NOTE: On another test just now, with *iPhoto's option to embed a profile unchecked*, iPhoto still embeds a profile into the modified versions. Very strange.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. • How can I get the Display Profile list to update with new profile names?

    Hello
I recently created a couple of color profiles with a calibration device, and I decided to manually rename the color profiles after creating them. The problem is, when I open Displays in the control panel, the new names for the profiles don't show up, only the old names. To get the Display Profile to update, I have to pull the profile out of Library > Color Syncs and restart (which clears the profile from the list), then put the renamed profile back in, restart (which then adds the renamed profile to the list)
Is there an easier way to to this, to get the Display Profile list to update? Is there a preference or cache somewhere?
    thanks

Oh, cool! I never handle any Mayan stuff in my job, but many of my academic cohort have done so. Mostly Tzotzil.
Anyhow: your sample font was Times New Roman. If you can't see the combining glyphs, then you're using an out-of-date version of the font, or something else is wrong. . Did you maybe start your work on a contemporary version of Word in WIndows, and now you've shifted to using a Mac with an older version of Office? THere are plenty of nulls in TNR (which are usually codepoints not in Unicode, usually a sign of some kind of hacky workaround on the part ofthe font designer). There should be a real combining macron below right about here, in between the crazy upper Latin and the Greek caps :
So I'd want to know: what font are you using for this? If not TNR, then I'd suggest Gentium. I might even suggest dropping TNR for Gentium. Judging by your screen name, you may well already be aware of SIL. If not - oh hey, they make fonts for people who are in your shoes! Go check 'em out. The fonts are free, and pretty reliable. And Gentium may already have a precomposed with-line-below glyph for your typesetting needs.
The Kerning dropdown lets you adjust the spacing between letters in a letter-by-letter way. Selecting all of your text and picking "Metrics" is the way to go here - unless you are a designer who thinks that the capital D is way too far away from the lowercase i, and want to tweak the kerning manually. "Optical" is for large font sizes where body-text-style kerning is too spacious. Avoid using it at small font sizes.

  • Washed out and dissapearing display profile

    Hi,
I hope someone might have some insight with my PB problem.
Thank you in advance for reading my long winded 1st post.
I wonder if any one else is having a similar problem.
I thought that this was the best place to turn for advice.
I have a one month old 15"PB, with 1.5 gigs of ram, and a 100 gig 7200 rpm hitachi HD, which has been running great until last Wednesday. Earlier on Wednesday I ran for the "first" time the software updater to 10.4.3. I don't think this is the reason for the following problem because of the reinstalls of the original OS, but you never know.
Anyway the display would all of a sudden look washed out. The difference is somewhat subtle but wrong. (Sometimes after staring at it for so long in the beginning I wasn't sure what was noraml or not anymore). I tried things like changing brightness, went to Universal Access and played with the contrast but it didn't look "normal" to me. I then checked the display profile of which the active profile was "LCD Display" which I now beilive to be the correct one. I decided to calibrate, which created a new profile. It didn't seem to be diiferent so I deleted the "new profile" which by chance or something also deleted the default "LCD Profile" now definitely washed out . The default setting was now "Generic RGB Proflie". Without the "LCD Display" profile, it won't/wouldn't recalibrtae again.
( You can see the difference by changing this setting between the LCD Dispaly and the Generic RGB profile.)
After reading for hours to try and find out how recreate the "LCD display" profile but with no luck I thought it best to backup everything and do a clean/erase and install.
This worked and it was back again:)
But after a while (a 1/2 hour or a few) it would vanish again and default to
    the "Generic RGB Proflie".
Rebooting would fix it.( I can't remember if it fixed it everytime or not).
I phoned Apple Care 3 times. The first two times to a level one tech which didn't provide any insight. The third time to a second level who thought it must be hardware related. He guessed that it might be losing comunication with the display?
He said that I could send it in for repair to see if they can figure it out or try taking it back to the Authorized Apple store from where it was purchased, which I thought might be quicker because I live in BC, Canada.
I took it in on Thursday only to have them get back to me today Monday to say that they can not recreate the problem. The repair tech asked for more information from me about the problem in hopes of recreating it. The tech after today would be away until Friday.
I phoned the sales lady of which I have had (before this) and know quite well, and voiced my displeasure. She is looking in to it but if they can't recreate it in the next however long I have to take it back until it happens again to start all over and be no further ahead.
    I am so frustrated.
    Thank you for reading,
    Martin
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hey, I had the same problem. Although I (kind of) isolated it. I found out that any time I am playing Civ III and unplug my power adaptor, the display goes to minimum power mode (dim). If one shines a light on it, then you can find the cursor and do stuff, but it is not an acceptable solution. The problem has happened afterwards, but it wasn't reproducable. Although I noticed that I had lots of applications open and was usually browsing in Safari when it happened. I've had other problems like a sticky trackpad or a messed up key bindings. (Delete not only took away a character, but it turned down my display brightness.
    Good luck.

  • Display all records from 4 select list

    Hi,
trying to associate 4 select list where i could display all records from a list linked to an other list.
1./ Created an item for each select list
    P1_employee_name
    P1_departments
    P1_employee_type
    P1_locations
2./Set both null and default values to '-1' for each item
3./Associated these items to source columns in the Region:
    where employee_name=:P1_employee_name
    or :P1_employee_name ='-1'
    and departments=:P1_departments
    or :P1_departments ='-1'
    and ......
When running the report, couldn't display all records from a given list associated to an other list.
e.g: Display all emp and type of emp for sales dept in Paris.
    Thks for your help

I believe the issue is that you need to group your predicates such as:
    where (employee_name=:P1_employee_name
    or :P1_employee_name ='-1')
    and
    (departments=:P1_departments
    or :P1_departments ='-1')
Also, if you are not already using the "select list with submit" type items, these work great for this case as the page will be submitted when the user changes the value of employeenam and the report will then reflect this change.

  • Suddenly getting UserNotFoundException: User Not Found: Could not load profile data from the database

Starting yesterday (I believe) we are suddenly receiving a "User not found" error when trying to view a user's profile page when clicking on their name (in search or elsewhere) via the url
    https://www.contoso.org/Person.aspx?accountname=contoso%255Cmyuserlogin
This is happening for all users. (but profiles exist and seem ok, and sync with AD is running fine) When looking in the logs I see the error  (full ULS log is later below)
Exception in LoadRequestedUserProfile: (Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserNotFoundException: User Not Found: Could not load profile data from the database.
The only clue of what MAY be going on is just before that I see the following two lines which came up after I changed the Database logging to Verbose:
    ConnectionString: 'Data Source=INSTANCE;Initial Catalog=UPAPROFILEDB;Integrated Security=True;Enlist=False;Pooling=True;Min Pool Size=0;Max Pool Size=100;Connect Timeout=15;Application Name=SharePoint[w3wp][3][UPAPROFILEDB]'    Partition:

If I am reading that correctly, does it mean the connection to the database is timing out instantly? I am able to use powershell to pull up profiles and print them to the screen while on the webservers. And it's only the one specific page that is not
    working.
What sort of tests or further debugging can I do for the error above?
We are on premise, SharePoint 2013 sp1, sql2012, server 2012, claims using the full SharePoint Profiile Sychronization against AD.  Farm has been running since last august. Last week the admin team did run windows update on all servers, I can't be sure

I checked the ProfileDB database and made sure the service accounts for the UPA has dbowner, so does the farm account, and the web application pool has SPDataAccess.
Verified the AD sync account has proper rights in AD.
I reran a full synchronization which ran with no errors.
File systems on the webservers and appserver have plenty of free space.
    Rebooted every server in farm
I even checked the bin directory of the mysite webapplication, (since once I had a weird problem where access to bin was removed.) WSS_ADMIN_WPG, WSS_RESTRICTED_WPG_W4 have full control and WSS_WPG,IIS_IUSRS all have read and execute.
I opened powershell on the webserver I can indeed load profiles and print their values.

Look at the URL in the search results. It may have invalid character in which case you can use this fix

  • A way to display error messages from the program

    Dear all,
I am looking forward to display a set of error messages(in a internal table) during the execution of the program to the user.
I wanted to know the better way of displaying error messages from my program with more options.
Well I tried out using displaying errors as ALV list/Grid or as simple list processing.
But I found some  stanadard transactions (Like in MM and FI  where errors are shown in a better way, but failed to find out how they are done.
    Please guide me.
    Thanks in advance
    Aryan
