Displaying Simple Equations

Hi,
I been thinking about writing a java program that lets the user
enter and display mathematical equations. This is an area of
java that I'm not too familiar with.
Before I dive into the information on fonts, glyphs, etc., are
there any snippets out there which show simple things like how
to display "x^2", "x/2", "sqrt(xy)", and so on?
Also, I'm going to need fonts with all the usual mathematical
symbols. Is there a standard font that has most of them? Which
ones do you recommend?
Also, I've tried running a few java programs that display text
in all the different fonts that are available on my PC. Some
of these fonts don't display properly. They come out as just
empty rectangles (mostly for fonts like Symbol or Wing Dings).
Why is that?
Any help most appreciated.

    Hello,
    Is it possible to create a calculator automation? I have to do this same simple equation many times in the day and would love if there was an automation to make things faster. Any thoughts would be very apprecaited!
    (inputed number) divided by 1.074 =
    Thanks,

    Something like this?
    property previous : {return, return, return} -- a list of previous equations
    property theNumber : 0 -- the previous number
    repeat -- forever
       set goodNumber to false
       repeat until goodNumber
          try
             set theNumber to text returned of (display dialog "Previous equations: " & return & (previous as text) & return & "Enter a number:" default answer theNumber as text) as number
             set theAnswer to theNumber / 1.074
             set goodNumber to true
          on error errmess number errnum -- not a number
             log errmess
             if errnum is -128 then error errmess number errnum -- user canceled, pass it on
          end try
       end repeat
       -- display dialog (theNumber as text) & " / 1.074 = " & theAnswer with title "The Answer" buttons {"OK"} default button 1 giving up after 2
       set end of previous to (tab & (theNumber as text) & " / 1.074 = " & theAnswer & return)
       if (count previous) > 3 then set previous to items -3 thru -1 of previous -- just the last 3

  • How Can I Display Embedded Equations in PowerPoint?

    I am finding that my embedded equations are being stripped from PowerPoint presentations when i show them in the classroom and I am looking for a way to preserve them  (I share to the classroom via either Shared Content or My Content).  I am using Math Type to embed equations in PowerPoint, but colleagues are reporting that Equation Editor inputs are also not displayed.
    Thanks in advance...
    WIN 7/64
    connect 9.1
    office 2007

    Hi Cyber Calc Teacher,
    I am glad you could figure out a way around the issue. This happens beacuse when you upload a PPTX file in a meeting opened in Connect addin, it (internally) gets converted to PPT before finally getting displayed to you in the form of SWF. In the other case where you face the issue, PPTX is directly converted to SWF without first getting converted to a PPT. In addition to the equations there are some other objects too that are dropped in the case which you tried 1st. You can get all the related information here: http://helpx.adobe.com/adobe-connect/kb/best-practices-sharing-pptx-files.html.
    In simple language, you can understand that there are a few things that work in PPTX and there are few other objects that work in PPT. To make sure that everything(weel, almost) you have in your PPT/PPTX is displayed correctly and in the same form inside a meeting, you should use Adobe Presenter to publish your content to Adobe Connect.
    Adobe Presenter is a authoring tool that comes as a Powerpoint addin. It helps you to add quizzes, videos, audios etc in your PPTX file and then publish to Connect. You can donload trial version of Presenter 9 and try your hands on that.

  • HT5361 Is it possible to embed raw latex into a mail message to display an equation?

    Hi,
    Is it possible to embed raw latex (or any other meta data format like HTML) into a mail message? I would really like to be able to send equations directly without converting them to PDF or GIF first.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    I just borrowed a quadratic equation from the MathML Wikipedia site and grafted it into an HTML document. It imaged fine in Safari 7. It should be noted that neither the latest Google Chrome or FIrefox rendered the same content accurately.
    Laying out your entire email message (including MathML) in HTML can be tedious. Once it is displayed in the browser, each use of the command+I will put the browser content in a new Mail compose window. So, you cannot add an equation to existing Mail composition. Select, copy and paste (or paste and match style) will not work either.
    Depending on the importance you place on email equations, at one time, Design Science (MathType) claimed compatibility with Apple Mail (4.5) where you could input your equation in MathType and it could then be placed within the email. The mail recipient would not need a copy of MathType installed for this to work. MathType even allows you to key your equation in with LaTeX syntax to generate the equation.
    You could check with them about functionality (or restrictions) with Mail 6 and 7 on OS X, as it might provide a more productive way to achieve your goals.

  • Hp prime calculator Cannot Solve simple equation

    Hello,
    I'm trying to solve
     solve( (2)^x = (x)^2,x)
    But the calculator cannot solve or am I doing somthing wrong?.
    I lost my TI Nspire CX and I though that HP Prime, since is a recent modern version, were able to solve something simple as that, I am wrong. (TI Nspire solved it ).
    How solve the above equation using the HP Prime? I'm seriusly thinking to return this back.
    Thank you

    Oops!  Quite right.  In general, all symbolic math work should be done in the CAS; that's what it's for.  Home is intended for ordinary number-crunching, not symbolic math.  Sorry for not pointing that out.

  • Solving a "simple" equation

    Hello all,
    Am trying to get multiple email address from a repeating table and I read from a blog
    here on an equation to do so but I can not seem to get to work. Was wondering if anybody knew what I am doing wrong? Here is my equation:
    eval(eval(Person,' concat(AccountId,"|")'),"..")

    An equation that fits on a single line is not complicated.
    Are the values real or complex?
    If you have a VI that calculates delta(S), and the function is well behaved, you could use Newton-Raphson to calculate S(delta).

  • Formula to deduct one cell from another cell - simple equation - cant find the answer, formula to deduct one cell from another cell - simple equation - cant find the answer

    Could anyone tell me how to deduct one cell from another cell in the numbers application.
    Thank you!

    to subtract one cell from another you enter a formula in a cell by:
    1) click the cell where you want the result to be
    2) click the cell that contains on of the operands
    3) type the minus sign ("-")
    4) click the other cell with the other operand
    e.g.  if cell A1 contains 5, cell B1, contains 2 and you want the difference of those two cells to be in cell C1....
    you would click cell C1 and then type: "=A1-B1" then type the enter key OR
    click cell C1 and then type "=", then click cell A1, then type "-", then click cell B1, then type the "enter" key

  • Equations display badly in IE

    I am using Robohelp X5 for Word. The Word documents contain
    equations. After generating the webhelp files, the equations
    display very badly in Internet Explorer. But they display just fine
    in Opera. If I open the actual gif file in IE,
    it opens the Windows picture viewer, and displays the
    equation just fine (but quite large). So I would guess that the IE
    gif-shrinking algorithm is the culprit.
    Anyone else come across this? Any suggestions?

    Hi mnicoll
    Are these images larger than what will comfortably fit in IE?
    I ask because I'm aware that IE typically will automatically scale
    an image to fit within the window. If you hover the image, you see
    a couple of odd icons. I belive one of them appears in the lower
    right corner of the image and you have to click it to see the image
    at its full size. I believe you get at this setting by clicking
    Tools > Internet Options... > Advanced tab > Multimedia
    section. There, you should see a check box labeled "Enable
    Automatic Image Resizing". DE-select that and you should be set.
    However, this would only change the behavior for your PC.
    There is nothing I'm aware of that you can do to accommodate your
    end users' PCs. Well, nothing to force a change in their browser
    behavior.
    What you *CAN* do is to ensure your images aren't overly
    large to begin with. But that's a whole other nest of weiner dogs.
    Cheers... Rick

  • HP Prime issue on solving C=S/M equation

    Hi,
    I am trying to solve a simple equation C=S/M in the solver app.
    If I start from scratch I do get results with small numbers for S & M. However, when I use large figures (1,900,000/2,000,000), I receive a "Bad Guess(es)" error. The strangest thing is that if I use the emulator in my PC, I always get the right result without any issues. I have tried using other variables, clearing them all together and it always comes back to the same issue. I have also tried with Solver variables and user variables and it has no benefit
    It looks like the variables are not updated when I enter new values in the Numeric view of the Solver app. But that is too large an issue to really be it.
    Thanks in advance for any support.
    Carlos

    Never mind... I found the solution, however odd it is.
    I was trying to solve the easy equation C=S/R and occasionally obtain the Bad Guess(es) error when the numbers were large (C=1,900,000/2,000,000) for example. Once this happened, the solver would not even work with lower magnitude numbers.
    I noticed that it appeared that the variables in the equation were not updated when I keyed in the numbers in the Numeric view of the Solver app.
    If I performed the same solving process with the emulator in my PC, I had no issues whatsoever, regardless of the magnitude of the numbers.
    Then after reading that the latest firmware update provided the Digit Grouping option, I sort of imagined something could be wrong with it when large numbers were keyed in. Anyway, the emulator does not have this option set in the software and it worked, so it sort of led the way.
    I finally went to settings and selected a Digit Grouping option with no thousands separator and voila... it worked smoothly.
    I think it may be something related to how the numbers are displayed vs how they are stored in the variables that led to this issue.
    Hopefully if someone gets to this same issue, she/he would get some info about it. I also posted this in the Google group in case someone in the HP team may see it and directed so that in a future firmware it is solved.
    Regards,
    Carlos

  • Creating a graph based on a quadratic equation.

    Hello, I just got my first Mac and iWork 09.
    I'm trying to create a graph in Numbers 09 based on a quadratic equation however I cannot find any way of doing this.
    I just need to some simple graphs based on equations such as y = x^2 + 3x + 5
    How do I make this into a graph in Numbers 09?
    Oh and another question... If I have a graph with points based on X and Y data, can I turn the trend line into an equation?
    Thanks
    Message was edited by: conielo

    To create a scatter chart, you need two columns (or rows) of data, one being X and the other being Y. So, in Column B put the X values you would like plotted. In Column C put your equation to calculate Y for each of those points.
    B2 =1
    B3 =2
    etc
    C2 =B2^23*B25
    then fill down to fill in the rest of the rows in the column.
    I'd recommend a look at the Numbers user's manual if the above doesn't make sense.
    If you have plotted some X-Y data and want the trendline equation, you can turn on a trendline and have it display the equation. You can't use the coefficients from the equation unless you read them off the chart and type them into your table manually. However, you can calculate the trendline yourself in your table. That was covered in some depth in a thread from a little while back. Here's the link to that thread:

  • Help with Line of Best Fit equation!

    Alright, I'm making a graphing program where the user can input up to 10 coordinates (all ints) and when they click draw, the points will be graphed on a cartesian plain and the program will calculate and draw the line of best fit... including displaying the equation.
    I've got the yIntercept to work perfectly, but sometimes the slope comes out to be 0.0, and such.
    The equation to do it can be found on this site (in the big white space)
    http://people.hofstra.edu/faculty/Stefan_Waner/RealWorld/calctopic1/regression.html
    There are several things you must do first:
    - Find the sum of all the X values
    - Find the sum of all the Y values
    - Find the sum of all the X*Y values
    - Find the sum of all the X^2 values
    You then stick it into the equation (you can see on that site) and you will get the slope. You then take the slope value and insert it into another equation to get the y-intercept
    I was just wondering if you could just look over my calculation and see where I may be going wrong. (Sometimes, I get an error in the console saying I cannot divide by 0)
    public void lineOfBestFit(int numOfPoints, int largeNumX, float increment, float incrementY)
         Graphics g = canvas.getGraphics();
         float sumX = 0;
         float sumY = 0;
         float sumXY = 0;
         float sumXSqr = 0;
         int smallNumX=9999999;
         int firstPoint, lastPoint;
         //Creates the variables for the line of best fit equation
         for(int j=0;j<numOfPoints;j++)
              sumX+=xValue[j];
              sumY+=yValue[j];
              sumXY+=(xValue[j]*yValue[j]);
              sumXSqr+=(Math.pow(xValue[j],2));
         //Line of best fit equation
         float slope = ((numOfPoints*sumXY)-(sumX*sumY))/((numOfPoints*sumXSqr)-(sumX*sumX));
         float yInt = (sumY - (slope*sumX))/numOfPoints;
         for(int j=0;j<numOfPoints;j++)
              if(xValue[j]<smallNumX)
                   smallNumX=xValue[j];
         firstPoint=((int)((slope*smallNumX)+yInt)*50/(int)incrementY+210);
         lastPoint=((int)(slope*largeNumX+yInt)*50/(int)incrementY+210);
         int firstX=((int)(smallNumX*50/(int)increment+210));
         int lastX=((int)(largeNumX*50/(int)increment+210));
         g.drawLine(firstX,firstPoint,lastX,lastPoint);
         //Rounds and displays the line of best fit equation
         slope = (Math.round(slope*100))/100;
         yInt = (Math.round(yInt*100))/100;
         if(numOfPoints>1)
                     if(yInt < 0)
              g.drawString("y = " +slope+ "x " +yInt,250,350);
              else
                   g.drawString("y = " +slope+ "x +" +yInt,250,350);

    I think I may have solved it.... seems to be working now.
    I casted all the numOfPoints as (float) .... and commented out the rounding. Since some of the slopes were coming out to be 0.00003, that would display 0.0 if I rounded.

  • Display for Two rooms, presentation

    I am setting up a studio with a mac controlling one monitor in the booth, and one high-res TV on stage.  I can't get a high enough resolution with the current monitor set up (computer monitor is an LG with 1400 x 1050 max resolution (60 Hz), and the TV is 1920 x 1080 (120Hz).  I am running at a much lower resolution so that both displays are edge to edge widescreen.  For some reason, at the highest available setting, the display is just 4:3 on the stage monitor, but full 16:9 on the booth monitor.  The owner just purchased a monitor of equivalent resolution, but half the refresh rate of the TV.  My side question is, will running the TV at 60 Hz present a problem when filming, or should we push to get a 120 Hz display at both ends?
    Ideally, I want the stage TV displaying simple animations, pictures and videos, while showing the desktop only in the booth (which won't work with them mirrored)  what should I use to get this configuration?

    to clarify, the new, high res booth monitor has not arrived yet, so I haven't been able to fiddle with it.
