Distortion at Output

I used one of the examples in Labview and also used one of the vi generation. I'm getting distortion for sawtooth and square wave outputs, when I increase my frequecy to more than 1000Hz.

Ahmed,
We talked a couple of days ago over the phone. In our conversation we discussed your application and the signals that you want to generate with your PCI 4452 DSA board.
You are trying to generate several sharp edge signals, like square waves, triangle waves, sawtooth waves, etc. We tried to generate square waves of different frequencies and what you were seeing was the following:
- When generating a 5 kHz square wave, it looked very good in your oscilloscope.
- When generating a 8 kHz square wave, you began to see a resemblance to a sine wave.
- Finally, when generating square waves with a frequency higher than 13 kHz, your signal would look exactly as a sine wave.
So why does this happen?
First it is necessary to understand a little more about the hardware architecture of your DSA board. The PCI 4451 board uses Delta-Sigma technology for analog output (Digital-to-Analog Converter - DAC)as well as analog input (Analog-to-Digital Converter - ADC). The Delta-Sigma converters provide excellent linearity and automatic filtering of frequencies above the Nyquist limit. The Delta-Sigma DAC oversamples and interpolates between points in the data array to "smooth" the signal and remove any components above the Nyquist frequency.
Your DSA board has a Delta-Sigma DAC with an update rate equal to 51.2 kSamples/s. This means that the Nyquist frequency of your signal is aproximately 25kHz, so the maximum frequency of sine waves that you could generate is aproximately 25kHz.
So far we know that the maximum frequency of a sine wave that can be generated with the PCI-4451 is aproximately 25kHz, and that the Delta-Sigma DAC will interpolate between points to "smooth" the signal being generated and remove any frequnecy components above the Nyqsuit frequency. But why can I generate a 25kHz sine wave, but not a 25kHz square wave?
All complex periodic waveforms are composed of a harmonic series of waveforms. This means that square waves, triangle waves, sawtooth waves, etc are the result of addition of a fundamental sine wave and its harmonics.
A square wave is built by adding a fundamental sine wave and its odd harmonics. Each new wave flattens the top of the original sine wave by pushing up valleys and pulling down peaks , causing steeper sides. The more harmonics added, the better the square wave being generated (see image attached below).
So the more harmonics included withint he 25kHz frequency limit, the better quality of the square wave.
If you generate a 1 kHz square wave, you will see in your oscilloscope a pretty good quality square wave signal because odd harmonics up to 13 harmonics are included within the 25kHz range.
If you generate a 5 kHz suqare wave, 2 harmonics are included within the 25kHz range. For 8 kHz only 1 harmonic is included in this range, and that is why you begin to see a resemblance with a sine wave. Finally, for frequencies above 13 kHz, only the fundamental frequency is present after the Delta-Sigma DAC removes all frequencies above the Nyquist frequency, and that is why you see a sine wave as the output.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me if you need any further assistance.

  • MuVo V100 suddenly distorts sound output, hates vocalists

9MuVo V00 suddenly distorts sound output, hates vocalists Greetings. I have a MuVo V00, which until quite recently has worked according to specifications as desired. After a period of nonuse, upon reinstatement it showed a global distortion in sound output, resulting in--impressi'vely--vocal frequency-range portions of files to be suppressed. Never mind that some music was improved in this way--it is an error that needs rectification, and unfortunately MuVo V00 models are past the End of Service Life.
I have downloaded the firmware patcher, and reapplied the latest firmware (which I had already had on the device, but consensus in various problem threads here leads one to believe that refreshing the firmware is a borderline panacea). No good. Swapped batteries on a hunch, no good. Swapped headphones, no good. Checked the files that are actually on the disk, they sound like they ought when played through the computer's means. I'm low on ideas, and the last person who asked this question here did not receive a reply. Anything spring to mind?

I updated my audio driver and bought another headphone and solved the problem.  I don't don't know why my previous headphone doesn't work for t400--it works perfect for my desktop.

  • AppleTV distorts sound, output level too high

    Hi
I have a problem and have already tried a number of solutions.
My AppleTV sound is distorted, due to the output level being too high. Initially I used the TVs headset jack-connector for connecting to my amp, and lowering the output level from the TV didn't work. It is distorted from the source (AppleTV)
Now I have bought a seperate D/A converter for connecting the AppleTVs optical output directly to my analog amplifier. Still doesn't work. Sound still distorted.
When playing music through AppleTV, I have the ability to adjust the volume level on the source device. And then everything is OK.
But airplaying video/youtube from my ipad (I do that a lot - playing kiddie-flics for my toddler) there is no option to reduce the sound level.
Effectively most content airplayed will be distorted - and I am sick of it. I have a high-end amp and speakers. I do not expect audiophile quality from the AppleTV. Still I didn't expect defective/destroyed sound... And no, the AMP isn't the issue, as this has been replaced as well, due to an upgrade. Same issue on both AMPs.
Any good suggestions? Or should I simply accept that the design criterias for the AppleTV doesn't involve a reasonable audio quality? Or is my particular product defective?
    Thanks,
    Claus

If the audio is clipped there's not much you can do other than re-record. But there is this: http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/RX/

  • Why distortion when output through computer out but not audio interface out?

    Equipment:
Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 digital audio interface
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 Mac Mini with 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Software:
    OS 10.8.2
    Mainstage 2.2.2 32 bit
I'm running a mic into my digital audio interface, which connects via Firewire to my computer.  The mic input is mapped to an audio channel strip.  When I attempt to run sound out using the stereo out on my computer, it works okay for about 10 seconds, but then starts progressively becoming more distorted.  At first, I thought it might be a bit rate issue, so I dropped it down very low.  This corrected it momentarily, but, again, after about 10 seconds, the distortion came back.  When I change the output to one of the audio outs on my digital audio interface though, it works fine.  However, I don't have the Y cable I'd need to take 2 of the mono audio outs on that device and merge them into a stereo out that I could plug into my computer speakers (that's all I've got right now), so I'm stuck with mono out.  Do you know why I'm getting this distortion on my computer's line out?  I don't have audio distortion problems if I'm watching Hulu or anything, and my Saffire drivers appear to be up-to-date and Focusrite says the device is supposed to be compatible with Mountain Lion.  Help is much appreciated!

  • 16:9 aspect ratio distorts in output

Please help, I am on a tight deadline!
I normally work in only 4:3 aspect ratio. I had to import and use all 16:9 footage today, so I created a new project, highlighted sequence, clicked "Sequence - Settings - and check marked the 16:9 anamorphic square". Canvas changed shape and fit the footage perfectly.
Went to export the file and it keeps squishing the footage so that it appears to be 4:3 ratio and people are skinny and tall with distortion when file is opened.
It is a 9 minute slideshow, so I was just using it in iDVD instead of normal DVD Studio Pro. I made sure iDVD settings were 16:9, but it appears to be the same problem no matter what I change in export setting.
Any ideas how to fix? I need to give this to a bride ASAP. This has to be an easy fix that I'm simply overlooking. Thanks!!!

  • Video distortion when outputting to QT

I am running FCP 7.0.3 on a Macbook Pro. I am editing a sequence that is 1 hour and 48 minutes. The first image is text over a field of black, the second is a tif of a logo, and the third is video. When i try to Export a QT video using FILE / EXPORT / QUICKTIME MOVIE / 'Current Settings," when it gets to the video, there is a field of green, then some pixilated video distortion, then the video seems to flicker back and forth and go back a few frames like a stuck record. I notice that sometimes when I am playing the clip in my timeline, it tends to get a little bit "stuck" when it goes from the tif to the video. It seems to jump a few frames ahead, but there is no video distortion, that only shows up when i expert the entire video. I have also broken up the sequence in to shorter clips of about 15 minutes and the problem seems to go away. Any insight greatly appreciated.

When you converted the files in Clipwrap, what settings did you use?

Not that I am aware of*. H.264 is problematic in FCP7. You either convert the footage to an FCP edit friendly format prior to editing, or you end up in your situation and do so on the timeline.
    I am using a Sony HXR-NX5U camera shooting at 1080i at 30fps,
Do you mean 1080i at 29.97 fps?
    * If you still have the files that are 15 minute subsections of the full clip, use QuickTime 7 to copy and paste them together into  a complete file, and save that file. In QT7,  Open the all the subclips as separate QTs, then in the second movie, select the entire movie, copy it, and then go to the first movie and move the playhead to the end of the clip and the paste the copied 2nd movie into the first. Repeat as necessary. No guarantees.

  • Imac DV G3 (PPC) speakers suddenly distorted sound output

HI everyone, I just bought an old iMac DV running OS9, and it worked just fine for a few days then - for no reason whatsoever, the stereo speakers suddenly produce very distorted sound, even at low volume. At higher volumes you can even see the speaker cones vibrating.
When it happened, I was just installing a few things with the volume set low, and the alerts suddenly sounded very distorted and remain that way. I didn't blow the speakers by playing loud music or anything like that.
I had nothing to lose, so I reformatted/installed new system but the problem remains.
My guess is that this is an electrical/hardware problem just down to plain old age, perhaps a bad solder joint or something. It's not the end of the world but it just seems strange that it happened so abruptly I did not move or thump the computer in any way.
It's an iMac DV from 1999, given it's age I'm not expecting miracles, but just wondering if anyone else ever had a similar problem and managed to fix it without pulling the computer apart and replacing a hardware component which is way too much hassle!
Were these models' speakers ever known to suddenly crap out with no warning?? Some older macs had design flaws they became notorious for (I'm thinking of my Ti Powerbook G4 hinges, I had that once!)
Is that extra button on the side booting into open firmware of any use? Just a stab in the dark!!!!
    Any ideas/insight anyone?
    Thanks!!!

At higher volumes you can even see the speaker cones vibrating.
That is normal. If they don't move, they don't work.
However, it could be that someone else overloaded the speakers and caused them to fail. I think the first step is to see if the speakers have been damaged. Use a pair of external speakers or headphones and test the sound.
Failed speakers in G3 iMacs are not a wide probelm like the one you mentioned, or bad capacitors in eMacs. Generally, the failure mode is the passive cooling (read, "no cooling") system baking the PAV board until some part of it fails.

  • Distorted/muffled speaker sound

So I have a 32gb black iPhone 4. Periodically, my speaker will have rather quiet, or distorted sound output. Randomly after using the speaker for a few minutes, the sound returns to normal. I've seen some people with dead speakers, but not this. Any ideas on how to fix? Should I just go to the genius bar? Anyone else having this problem?
For clarification, this is the bottom speaker, not the earpiece.

This may not be the exact same issue, but I noticed that the iphone 4 was distorting audio playback in the ipod and on pandora causing the headphone magnets to overload. In other words it was not source distortion which is common and acceptable in rock music etc.
This disturbed me enough with the dropped calls to put the iphone 4 back in the box. Im not a hater this is my 4th iphone in 3 years. But I listen to music all day on my iphone and this all I could handle.
I went out and bought a gen 1 on craigslist after living with this issue for 3 weeks. I wish I hadnt sold my 3gs but hey a nice gen 1 looks cool, and the wifi speeds are the same as the iphone 4.
Bye iPhone 4, Ill wait for the next rev.

Heat and humidity can certainly be a factor.
Review the following information for environmental specifications.
    Operating environment
    Operating temperature: 5° to 40° C (41° to 104° F)
    Recommended operating temperature: 15º to 30º C (59º to 86º F)
Recommended relative humidity: 20% to 80% noncondensing
    Storage environment
    Storage temperature: -40° to 60° C (-40° to 140° F)
Storage relative humidity: 5% to 90% noncondensing
NOTE:High electromagnetic fields might distort the output from your product. HP recommends using a USB cable less than or equal to 3 m (10 feet) to minimize noise from potential high electromagnetic fields.

  • Problems with the sound in the headphones when you press the keys iphone 5s

Sound distortion " keyboard clicks " headphones.

    Greetings alexsuperpechen,
If you are getting distorted sound output through your headphones when you use your iPhone's keyboard, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
If your headset isn't working - Apple Support
In particular the first troubleshooting paragraph -
You can fix most headset issues with a few steps. Try these first:
Make sure that the headset has a built-in microphone.
Unplug the headset and clear any debris from the headset jack. Then plug it back in.
Make sure the headset is plugged in all the way. If you’re using a case, remove it to make sure it’s not getting in the way.
Check the headset cable, connector, remote, and earbuds for damage. Make sure they’re not blocked or dirty.
Try using another headset. If the issue happens with the other headset, contact Apple Support for help. If the other headset works, contact the headset manufacturer.
Try using a different iOS device with your headset. If the issue happens with the other iOS device, contact the headset manufacturer. For Apple headsets, contact Apple support.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Be well,

The BEST format to use with iDVD is .DV video from QT Pro ?
    Hi Jon
If you remember my video (640x480) NTSC in iMovie Project.
Someone told me that exporting movie to DV video QT from iMovie share option, for burning in iDVD, is the best quality possible.
    Is this true ?

Someone told me that exporting movie to DV video QT from iMovie share option, for burning in iDVD, is the best quality possible.... Is this true ?
As usual, this is really a matter of individual opinion. I personally prefer the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). It is newer codec specifically designed for use as an "intermediate" editing compression format. It is slightly more efficient than DV-25 (18-20 Mbps for audio + video vs. 28.5 Mbps) and is less restrictive (i.e.,the user has more control over certain settings). On the other hand, the very nature of having a highly standardized (few user option) compression format does appeal to many users since there are fewer things the user can mess up.
If so what are the parameters ? Again is for seeing in a widescreen TV
Bit rate, frame rate, and encoding dimensions are part of the standard and do not have user parameters as such other than selecting the NTSC or PAL standard. With regard to the aspect ratio, you simply select which you want to use—4:3 or 16:9. However, as I've previously mentioned, it is possible to distort your output by either entering the wrong aspect or to actually "lose" the embedded flag/value in some work flows. (I.e., a 4:3 aspect movie displayed at 16:9 makes the people an objects appear short and fat while encoding a 16:9 aspect movie as 4:3 will make them look tall and skinny.) Movies should always be encoded in their original aspect ratio since any modern digital TV will allow the user to disport—i.e., force a 4:3 file to fully fill a 16:9 display screen. In fact, some will even allow you to spread the distortion evenly across your screen or to the spread it proportionally. (On my set these features are called "H-Fill" and "Justify" respectively.) If you were to use the AIC video compression format rather than DV, then you would have to manually enter the display dimensions for the "standard" and/or "definition" format you are targeting.

  • X6 problems with popups - missing images

We recently purchased RoboHelp X6 and generated a X5 project
in X6 and the popups that were working fine in X5 (gif images) are
now not working (not showing up in output file).
Anyone have this problem? Some of them have conditional
tagging as well. Any suggestions? We are going to try and
troubleshoot by removing the conditional tagging and see if that is
the problem, but I just wondered if X6 was handling autosizing
    popups differently than in X5??

Alas, the RH 6 hyperlink dialog for auto- and custom-sizing
popups lists .htm files and bookmarks only. As you have discovered,
you can use the "Display in frame" feature, specify a new window,
and you get your popup. But you lose the click-close feature. The
user has to click the "X."
I'd like to make a couple of points.
    1. Direct placement of any file into the project's Windows
directory deprives RH of the "knowledge" that the file is part of
the project. When you insert a link to the file, RH adds it to the
    project list.
    2. You can import images as baggage files, and RH will keep
track of them in the project database. However, popup dialogs don't
    list baggage image files.
    3. Instead, I save screen captures elsewhere. I often crop,
resize and otherwise fiddle with images for graphic effect. I
prefer not to work from the graphics application in the RH project
folder, because I would have to keep careful track of which images
already are linked. Resizing a linked image distorts the output
because its original dimensions are in the html code. I would have
to go back and re-link to the revised image.
    4. When it's ready to be brought into the project, I import
an image into a new topic, sometimes with a headline or caption,
but usually with no text. If I have a lot of them, sometimes I add
a folder to the project explorer for popups and use a file name
like homescreen_pop.htm to remind me of which topic it belongs to.
Since it's an htm file, it appears in the popup hyperlink
    file list.
Yes, it's an extra step. I find it well worth the trouble.

  • Something WRONG WITH ITUNES

Basically ever since my upgrade to iTunes 10, my iTunes has given me less then standard muffled somewhat distorted sound output quality. When played the same file on QUICKTIME (part of the iTunes/Quicktime suite) it sounds much clearer and crisper.
I have spent the past 4 days researching this problem and have found NO solution! My sound check/ sound enhancer etc. are all off. Also, this is clearly not an iTunes 10 specific issue as upgraders from all past upgrades have experienced this in minority. There is nothing wrong with my speakers/sound card.
Perhaps it was a faulty upgrade? I have even tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it. I don't know if I did this effectively as all my songs were there when i finished re-installing it (I would imagine the library would be empty). But is re-installing it the issue?
I have been an avid iTunes user for years and am really desperate for a solution before i for the first time consider changing media libraries.

    Hi AppleFreak,
Try to logout and log back into iTunes on that "not a Mac" computer. It should then refresh with the new balance.
Let me know if that works.
