Dm_exec_query_memory_grants, Is_next_candidate, wait_order whilst is under memory pressure question

I have several spids which are in resource_semaphore wait state as there is an active query consuming a lot of memory.
When I check dm_exec_query_memory_grants I can see that is_next_candidate=1 spid is requesting more memory than is available (hence resource semaphore) but there are spids that are also waiting who are requesting an amount of memory that is less than the
available amount and these should be able to run but (I assume) because they are not is_next_candidate that they have to wait in a resource_semaphore state.
Is there anything we can do to ensure that queries that can run will run before queries so that queries that are waiting on resource_semaphore do not block them?
example - the spid's in wait order position 2 and 3 below are stuck in resource_semaphore despite 700000 kb of memory available

Resource Semaphore checks for waiting query in its queue. If it finds one, it puts the new query into a wait queue for fairness, because the wait queue is designed as first-come-first-served basis with small weight to favor small queries.
Do you happen to know if the weighting is configurable or what this weighting is called so I can further investigate?
That is internal mechanism and I dont think there is option to control it but I am not sure. Even if it is there I would not recommend to use it. The whole problem of memory grant can arise because of two condition
1. Insufficient memory
2 Poor query with outdated stats forcing optimizer to build a plan which sees more memory requirement.
I would still say find out queries(s) taking huge memory grants. Generally outdated stats and poorly written query causes semaphore waits. look at query plan on extreme left side click on first operator and it would show memory grants.

    Hi BI_Eric,
The error occurs on the following scenario.
You run a Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) query that contains a Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) measure in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services (SSAS 2008 R2).
The DAX measure has an expression that contains many levels of nested binary operators.
Applying SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 will fix the problem, please refer to the link below.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2675230
Besides, enough to seriously impair performance.you used CrossJoin function to join multiple dimensions which might cause the performance issue. If you crossjoin medium sized or large sized sets (e.g., sets that contain more than 100 items each), you can
end up with a result set that contains many thousands of items enough to seriously impair performance.http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/337aea24-09ff-4354-b67d-8a90f67a13df/memory-pressure-error?forum=sqlanalysisservices

  • [iPhone SDK] Nib vs. JIT allocation: memory pressure and programmer time

I'm going to ask a question that there's no single answer to. Instead, I'm more interested to know how different people approach the same problem.
Lately I've been finding I'm of two minds when I have a UI element or view controller that isn't always used. On the one hand, the iPhone is a fairly memory-constrained environment, and the rules for developing for it are pretty explicit: don't use memory until you need it. That suggests "just in time" or "lazy" allocation: don't allocate it until you actually need it for the first time. After that, hold onto it in case you need it again, but be ready to free it if you receive a memory warning. My code is full of methods with names like "ensureViewerLoaded" which I call just before I need the object in question to allocate it if necessary.
(For context: my applications are generally UIKit-based utility or data-browsing/editing apps with little graphical or computational complexity and very little memory pressure overall. So far, I've only released one app; at its greediest, it consumes about 1 MB. This isn't because I'm a brilliant programmer--although I do try to be parsimonious--it's just because the app doesn't need much memory to do what it's supposed to do.)
But on the other hand, allocating those same objects in nib files (or, in other cases, loading them from plists or object archives) makes me more nimble. I've found that it reduces the weight of my code, paring it down to the logic I really need to be paying attention to. That lets me code faster--which means I can modify faster and release faster. And one thing I'm finding is that on the App Store, more releases means more sales. And more sales means I get to buy a MacBook Air with an SSD sooner, and thus save my back a few pounds of strain and my patience a few seconds of compilation. ;^)
I guess what I'm asking is, how are you resolving these sorts of trade-offs? Where are you trading phone resources for programmer resources, and where are you deciding not to? And how is the type of app you're writing influencing that decision?

My applications don't need much memory either, so I let everything happen in the nib file. I typically have about three views to worry about, and nothing significantly graphical in any of them.

  • Memory Pressure Always Yellow

Hello everyone, I would like to ask for some help figuring out why my activity monitor is constantly yellow/amber.
    The machine is a late 2013 base macbook air (1.3 i5, 4GB, 128GB SSD)
I just did a fresh reformat of Mavericks 10.9.4 with a USB thumb drive and reinstalled my apps, office, etc.  Nothing out of the ordinary.
My memory always looks like this in activity monitor:
The apps I have open are activity monitor, safari with 4 tabs, messages, Air Mail, twitter, and Spotify.
The computer is not necessarily hanging or slow, but with have a small hiccup once in a while.  Sometimes get a beach ball.  Is this merely not having enough ram
? I would expect a fairly new macbook air to be able to handle these tasks....
    Thanks for any insight.

Anything involving videos, music, photos uses a lot of memory.  All the yellow tells you is that the memory is actually in use and not just allocated.  The green means a lower level use of the memory.  Notice that your Memory Used and Virtual Memory go up a little with Spotify running...that means there is less memory available for actual use.  The current Mac OS X versions allocate almost all memory that exists, even if it is not being used.  With Spotify running more of that allocations is in use so there is less for other tasks.
You can experiment if you like by turning off the other apps and turning on Spotify and see what the memory pressure is then.
Overall, that is really not bad performance for 4 GB of memory.  You would see much less pressure if you had 8 GB.
This is what it looks like for me with 8 GB memory: (no Spotify)
You can see the memory is almost all allocated, but the pressure is really low.

I want to check all functions of PCI 6534.I have read the user manual..I have some memory related questions. Please help me for that.
1.)If i am using the continuous output mode.and the size of generated data is less than 32 MB.If i want to preload the memory, what should i do?I want that first of all i load all my data to onboard memory & then i want to make start the transfer between 6534 & peripheral. Is it possible? As per me it should be.Plz tell me how should i do this?I think that in normal procedure the transfer between 6534-peripheral & outputting data from pc buffer to onboard memory works parallely. But i don't want this.Is it poss
    ible?
(2).Similarly in finite input operation(pattern I/O) is it possible to preload the memory and then i read it?Because i think that the PC memory will be loaded automatically when 6534 acquires the data and then when we use DIO read vi the pc buffer data will be transferred to application buffer. If this is true,i do not want this.Is it possible?
    (3) One more question is there if i am using normal operation onboard memory will be used bydefault right? Now if i want to use DMA and if i have data of 512 bytes to acquire. How will it work and how should i do it?Please tell me the sequence of operations. As per my knowledge in normal DMA operation we have 32 Bytes FIFO is there so after acquisition of 32 bytes only i can read it.How it will known to me that 32 bytes acquisition is complete?Next,If i want to acquire each byte separately using DMA interrupts what should i do?Provide me the name of sourse from which i can get details about onboard memory & DMA process of 6534 specifically
(4).In 6534 pattern Input mode,if i want to but only 10 bits of data.and i don't want to waste any data line what should i do?

    Hi Vishal,
I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.
    1) It is definitely possible to preload data to the 32MB memory (per group) and start the acquisition after you have preloaded the memory. There are example programs on ni.com/support under Example Code for pattern generation and the 6534 that demonstrate which functions to use for this. Also, if your PC memory buffer is less than 32MB, it will automatically be loaded to the card. If you are in continuous mode however, you can choose to loop using the on-board memory or you can constantly be reading the PC memory buffer as you update it with your application environment.
    2) Yes, your data will automatically be loaded into the card's onboard memory. It will however be transferred as quickly as possible to the DMA FIFO on the card and then transferred to the PC memory buffer through DMA. It is not going to wait until the whole onboard memory is filled before it transfers. It will transfer throughout the acquisition process.
    3) Vishal, searching the example programs will give you many of the details of programming this type of application. I don't know you application software so I can't give you the exact functions but it is easiest to look at the examples on the net (or the shipping examples with your software). Now if you are acquiring 512 bytes of data, you will start to fill your onboard memory and at the same time, data will be sent to the DMA FIFO. When the FIFO is ready to send data to the PC memory buffer, it will (the exact algorithm is dependent on many things regarding how large the DMA packet is etc.).
    4) If I understand you correctly, you want to know if you waste the other 6 bits if you only need to acquire on 10 lines. The answer to this is Yes. Although you are only acquiring 10 bits, it is acquired as a complete word (16bits) and packed and sent using DMA. You application software (NI-DAQ driver) will filter out the last 6 bits of non-data.
Hope that answers your questions. Once again, the example code on the NI site is a great place to start this type of project. Have a good day.
    Ron

  • Firefox 27 memory leak (/questions/978195)

I already did this, sorry , but now I include the automated information.....
More than 6GB in 3 hours (MacOSX 10.7.5, 16Gb RAM)
(No time personally to look at this but, I have tagged it as escalate)

I will make a quick comment, but am unlikely to get back to this again before the weekend.
First do not think we are ignoring this or saying it is not a problem. It is a case of it is something often difficult to pin down and must initially be checked and compared with Firefox in a clean configuration, and using memory figures from the Firefox's reporter about:memory.
If you can ramp up memory usage to 6GB in only 3 hours at least it should be relatively easy to demonstrate whether or not something prevents that from happening.
    As a test please
*Make an new additional Firefox Profile,
*Run Firefox in Firefox's safe mode
    *With all plugins disabled
    * Look at memory use by using ''about:memory''
    * Browse for a few hours, has the problem now disappeared ?
Instructions and discussions about this can be seen in thread

  • P45 Neo3-FR memory problem / questions

    Hello all
My old motherboard just died on me so yesterday I upgraded to a P45 Neo3-FR with an Intel E8500.  Problem is that I can't get it to boot up with my old memory (4 x 1Gb modules as below).  Most of the time the PC doesn't do anything, no screen, no post, but occasionally some weird characters at the top of the screen.  I have put in some old DDR2 RAM and the system starts up OK.  I bought this board as the MSI spec page says it supports 1066 memory.
    Questions,
    1) Is there any chance of getting this memory working in the board?
    2) If so, how?
    3) If not, what should I replace it with?
    4) Do I need to touch the 2 jumpers to change the FSB.  I left them on default and everything "seems" to be working OK but I guess I should be setting them to 333 for my CPU?
    5) I have installed 2 system fans on the MB connectors.  The fans are spinning but the speeds are not being reported in the BIOS.  Any ideas?
    6) Is there a comprehensive setup guide for this board anywhere on this forum?  There was an excellent one for my old MSI board and I'm not finding the manual to be much help to be honest.
Thanks very much (in advance) for any help with all this.
P.S.  I don-t know what BIOS version the board came with.  I will check it when I get home.

I bought this board as the MSI spec page says it supports 1066 memory.
Note that is says "1066* (OC)" on the product page.  The Intel P45 Chipset does not natively support DDR2-1066 memory modules.
This is the datasheet for your Corsair Memory modules:
    http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/TWIN2X2048-8500C5DF.pdf
As you can see, these modules are essentially DDR2-800 modules and that DDR2-1066 @2.1-2.2V is an overclocking rating that requires non-standard voltage settings.  Those OC Settings are pre-programmed into the SPD Chips of your memory modules via an EPP-Profile which is essentially an overclocking profile which is for NVIDIA Chipset boards, not for Intel Chipset boards.  Even if the BIOS is able to notice the DDR2-1066 EPP profile and decides to AUTO-memory frequency to 1066 MHz, it is not able to raise the memory voltage accordingly (it can't, because as I said, EPP Profile Information and settings parameters are for NVIDIA Chipset.)
Do you see now, why your system won't boot?
    Try this:
    - try one of the factory overclocked Corsair stick alone
If that works, lower memory frequency to DDR2-800 in BIOS and check again, if the system will boot with four sticks (you may have to raise memory voltage slightly.
If that fails, put in one of your DDR2-800 sticks, then set FSB/DRAM Ratio to 1:1, save an exit and then try again with your factory overclocked modules.

  • If my macbook's memory pressure goes red with just Safari and Word open, is it just a memory issue?

    Hello all,
I'd really appreciate any input on this issue. I'm not especially expert with regard to computer systems and software, so I ask that you please bear with me; I'll try to provide the best information I can. What has been happening with my computer is that it has been freezing and crashing, even with only Safari and Microsoft Word open. More information about the system as well as what I've done so far is below.
I have a mid-2012 13-inch Macbook Pro with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory (two 2 GB cards), and an Intel HD Graphics 4000 card. I am running I have approximately 280 gigs free on my 500 GB Apple HDD. I am running OS X 10.9.3 (13D65), Kernel version Darwin 13.2.0.
In March or April of this year, my computer started seriously slowing down and freezing and crashing. (I think that this was around the time I upgraded to Mavericks, but am not 100% positive.) Since it is my only computer and I'm a PhD student, it took me until May to seriously address the issue. I ran Apple hardware diagnostics and the disk utility (verified the disk; verified & repaired the permissions), and tried uninstalling programs I thought might be causing issues, but nothing improved. Since it didn't appear to be a hardware issue, I decided to do a clean install of Mavericks with a full software update [and didn't use a time machine backup like I'd done in the past; I only backed up files and bookmarks this time and installed new versions of all my programs]. Although my computer ran better for a few weeks, it started slowing down again, and lately has been crashing on a near-daily basis.
After reading through the fora, I re-ran disk utility (disks check out fine; one permission -- for Safari -- seems to refuse to be repaired), re-ran Apple Hardware test twice (no issues found), and have been running the Activity Monitor [I put it in my dock with the bars showing CPU usage]. Today, when my computer started seriously slowing while I had only two programs open (Safari & Microsoft Word), the Activity Monitor icon on the dock showed all four bars at max.
I managed to get a few screencaps of the Activity Monitor:
So, this suggests to me that either (a) I have insufficient RAM to run Mavericks and run basic computer programs, or (b) there is some other issue.
Do you all have any recommendations as to the best way to proceed? I don't have a lot of cash, so I can't really spend money unless it is really warranted. Would it be worth running OnyX first? Or is this a pretty clear indication that I need new RAM? Alternately, are there any other issues that seem likely (an undetected hard drive problem, etc.)?
    Thank you!

    Hi Melophage,
Thank you. Although it is possible something was running in the background, in Force Quit, the only applications visible were Finder, Microsoft Word, and Safari.
I ran Etrecheck and have included the output here:

  • Macbook pro running 10.9.4 very slow, high memory pressure

All functions running very slowly. I have to limit the number of open applications to about three or the 4GB memory hits maximum and the system slows to almost completely non responsive. Perhaps was slowing down with earlier versions of OS X, but notice particularly with 10.9 and 10.9.4.

You might obtain some relief by installing a 4 GB RAM module in place of one of the two 2 GB modules.  That would then allow for the MBP to operate with the maximum of 6 GB RAM that an early 15" 2008 MBP supports.
The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.

  • What is causing random memory pressure surges?

Running OS X Mavericks on a late 2012 iMac 27' 3.4GHz system with 32GB physical memory, with increasing frequency my system is slowed down to a crawl by random surges in memory useage-- can someone provide me some insight as to the cause?

I'm sorry, I mis-spoke. Launchd is responsible for the largest "ports" count by far (1796-1830). Otherwise, it appears to be some sort of kernel issue at 1.40GB.
Clearly, I'm exposing my own ignorance and will take this question down and call Apple Care Tech Support-- sorry to bother you!

  • Memory upgrade question

    Hey all -
I'd like to increase the memory in my 400 mhz G4 Yikes (PCI). Right now I have one 128MB and 2 256MB cards, both 100.
I've always been led to believe that the max I can install is 4 256MB cards. But I was just reading that I can in fact install up to 4 512MB cards using OSX (I run 10.3.9). Which is true? Is the 1 GB limit based on OS9?
Also, can I install 133 memory? Is that faster than 100? Can I mix 133 and 100?
Can any 133 SDRAM 168 pin work in the MAC, like modules that might also fit in a PC?
I'd like to install at least 1GB to coincide with a software upgrade to Adobe CS2. If I can put more then 1GB that would be great, and the fastest possible.
    Thanks in advance.

The following is from the RamJet memory website:
"The original PCI Yikes version was discontinued in the fall of 1999, and all subsequent models can use the AGP version memory. These later AGP models include the G4 Cube, the G4 Sawtooth, and the G4 Dual Processor.
Maximum RAM: Although it is physically possible to install four 512mb DIMMs, this machine will only recognize a maximum of 1.5G under OS9. OX10.0 and later are able to recognize a full 2Gig."
    http://www.ramjet.com/g4c.asp
This is confusing - I guess they are referring to subsequent models when talking about the 2GB max and not the PCI.
