DNS Name field empty - why?

Hi all,
Please forgive my naive question, I am not a guru of networking...
I am trying to understand why the Macs in my network (10.4.9) always have their DNS name field in ARD 3.1 empty ("Unknown") whereas the PCs (although obviously not accessible with ARD) do show up with their DNS name.
I can edit each computer "info" window, but I am not quite sure that's the way it should be done.
What do I have to do in order to know and see the DNS name?
Isn'it it supposed to be the (Mac) computer's name.local ?
Many thanks for your attention.
Cheers
Carlo

It sounds like your user account is not in the admin group. Open System Preferences -> Accounts and check that there is at least one admin account. If none of those accounts are listed as admin accounts, see here for a fix: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1323191&tstart=0

  • NAC Profiler DNS Name Queries

    Hi Guys,
I'm having an issue with NAC Profiler 3.1.1_18 when trying to profile servers using DNS Name.
I have one collector configured to  do DNS Collection with Zone transfer enabled.
If I do a search with string *.server.*, the system returns me just servers with the word "server" in dns name. This is working fine.
But when a create a profile (named Servers) and add a rule to match dns server names with the string *.server.*, profiler will put in the Servers' profile all devices that has any data on DNS Name field. no matter if it has the word "server" in the name or not.
Any idea about what I'm forgetting?

  • Task Name Field, "Blank" ("") in 2007, "Empty" (Empty) in 2010, HOW TO FILD/FILTER for empty?

In MS Project 2007, I can use VBA code in Excel and determine if the selected task “Name” field is blanks by using the code “pj.Activecell.text <> “”.
In MS Project 2010, blank name cells are no longer “” (or blank), they are “Empty”. How do users filter for a non-standard value of “empty” then the text of “empty” is not in the task “Name” cell?

    Hi Dan,
Since I almost know nothing about VBA and I can only read but not write code, I'll let John or Rod (VBA kings on this forum) jump in.
But here is what I go recording the macro:
    Sub Macro1()
    SetAutoFilter FieldName:="Name", FilterType:=pjAutoFilterIn, Criteria1:=""
    End Sub
Also ensure to have the latest version of Project 2010 since I noticed different behaviour with blank lines with 2 different versions.

  • How do I get History to show entries that have an empty Name field?

I've noticed that if you go History/Show All History , it doesn't show entries with an empty Name field. If I enter part of the location URL in the "Search History" box (such as a Goggle search) the entries are there (with a Visit Date from yesterday), but if I then click on the Yesterday category, these entries are not shown. I'd expect the "Yesterday" category to show *everything* I visited yesterday.

Thanks @ComputerWhiz - and apologies for the delay in responding.
I disabled Googlebar Lite, and then checked Show All History. I found that things were unchanged: I could search for an item and it would appear, but if I select all items from "this month", those items with a blank name field still didn't show up.
Even if creating an entry with a blank name is not "good practice", I'd argue that Show All History should do just that in all cases, not just when a search term thows up a match.
I'm relieved that it's not Googlebar Lite interferring with the History display, though. Its word seach buttons (that disappeared when Google Toolbar for Firefox was withdrawn) are an essential part of using search, IMO...

  • "Login name" field randomly empty

We have the Inventory Only client deployed. All is working well except that the "Login name" field is only filled in with about 10% of the scanned stations and those 10% change after every scan. It seems that this field is filled in and emptied randomly. ZCM Version is 10.2.1 (did not work in earlier version either). Workstations are W2K and XP, all with client 4.91sp2. Happens with both OS's. The scans on the workstations happen when users are logged in during the day. I have changed 'determining Primary User' but that does not seem to affect anything. Any idea where this field gets its value on the local workstation ?

  • DNS Name in OD Password Server field?

So, I got a new juniper firewall the other day to reduce the amount of work my main server has. Fire it up, configure it, and I notice that password server requests are going out the NAT, then back into the public IP of the server.
My question is this: would it be wise and/or acceptable to change the IP address to a URL in OD (in WGM, Click on target, config in the popup, passwordserver in the list, value in question is PasswordServerLocation and dsAttrTypeNative:apple-password-server-location)?
I would rather do this as the internal DNS points the proper name to the internal IP, while the external does the same for the public IP, so password server would work properly no matter where a user is.

  • Why can't I use tilde (~) in the site name field?

    Hello everybody!
I have my Web page in an external Web server and I use iWeb to edit this page (the editing is made locally on my laptop and exported afterwards). In addition, my Web server demands that my root page is "/~tfioreze".
In iWeb, my site name field is "tfioreze". However, since I'm trying to use some RSS files, I need to change now the site name into "~tfioreze". The problem is that iWeb does not allow me to include the tilde (~) in the site name, and as a result, my RSS files cannot be found because the path is incorrect in the Web server .
My question: how can I somehow include the tilde in the site name field in iWeb?

  • Network adaptor DNS name reverting to old

    Hi guys,
We setup a OSX SL machine to test its email performance. When it was setup, the admin gave it a host name like company-mailserver.com, but we modified this and related server identity names to reflect the new email domain it would be handling, mail.diffcompany.com; and since then its running mail services and server configuration get screwed up constantly.
When it was working last week, changeip -checkhostname showed proper hostname and DNS hostname matching for mail.diffcompany.com, and the DNS name as listed in the server administrators panel (under network) showed mail.diffcompany.com for the en0 ethernet adaptor. But when I came in to work today, the machine's thinking wheel was spinning in the server admin panel, and numerous other fields that were filled in correctly and working for mail, dns, etc reverted to default blank.
I saw this before and immediately checked the ethernet adaptor DNS name, and sure enough it had reverted to company-mailserver.com. Why does this keep happening? I have noticed that other services that were originally setup were using the company-mailserver.com name, so clearly there's some sort of legacy/cache going on of the first DNS entries that I cannot seem to undo. Nonetheless I disabled all those other services so I would assume they shouldn't have any effect.
Other posts I've read suggest that once DNS records get screwey, often you're better off reinstalling the whole shebang. I'd like to avoid that at all costs, as this would not be viable in the the future, and I'd like to know what exactly is going on anyway.
Anyone have this experience? What steps did you take to fix it?

I'll assume the box is not using DHCP for its IP addressing. If the box is using DHCP for its network controllers, switch over to a static address and static-defined DNS references.
Given the fundamental nature of DNS in a modern IP network, if you're going to, um, misrepresent the configuration to the server and to DNS, then, um, Bad Things can happen if you don't correctly and entirely, um, misrepresent DNS and the configuration.
if you want to do this such that it'll be stable, then set up your own local DNS services on the box and aim the box at its own DNS and aim the DNS server at your forwarding servers, and effectively create your own little private bubble of example.net within your enveloping example.com network configuration.
[Here's a local DNS set-up|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] that would likely work here. You'll have a zone for your example.net target domain for this server (its own "bubble"), and set up your forwarding or such to aim at your (other) local DNS servers, and those can then reach out to the rest of the Internet.

  • Domain name/"primary DNS" name/mail host name/mail server name/mx name

    Hi,
I have registered my domain name (N.com) with an external dns server and created an MX record (mail.N.com) for it as well. My server sits behind a router and internet traffic is port(80)-forwarded to my server's fixed internal ip address (I can access my webpages from the internet just fine). When I initially setup the server I was asked to give it a "primary DNS name." I naturally assumed that N.com was supposed to be entered here, but that just caused all kinds of problems (though I still do not understand why). So I reinstalled and currently have server.N.com as the primary DNS name of the server (although it shows up in Server Admin and Workgroup Manager as server.local--why is that?)
I have had no luck getting any email from the internet with the default settings in mail services (domain name of N.com and host name of server.N.com). Having no luck with the defaults, I assumed that maybe I needed to change the host name to "mail.N.com" so that it matched the MX record. I also changed the user preferences in Workgroup Manager to receive mail from mail.N.com--but still no luck. Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong and how come none of the Mail Service literature mentions anything about what a mail "host name" is supposed to be? Is it supposed to be the same as the "Mail Server" name that Workgroup Manager asks each user for? and is it the same as the MX record name?
I am just needing some help to connect all these variously named, but undefined, dots.
Also, how come I can access webmail from the internet using www.N.com/webmail but can't do it from any computers within my physical network (I have to use IPaddress/webmail or server.local/webmail)?
Also, should my user email addresses be [email protected] or [email protected] (which is the current default)?
Thanks in advance and good luck!
    John

I had been told by a friend that ... regular email coming in from the internet would go through port 80
    Unfortunately you were misinformed.
My MX record needs the extra subname (such as "mail") in front of the domain name, right?
Not at all. A MX record for 'N.com' is entirely valid (expected, in fact).
An MX record tells remote mail servers where to send mail for any domain/subdomain. If you think about it, let's say you worked for Apple and you wanted people to be able to send email to [email protected], well then you need an MX record for 'apple.com'.
You can see if you dig MX apple.com that they actually have 9 MX records, but the point still stands.
Now, you might also have MX records for subdomains so that you can have [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc. Each of these subdomains would need a separate MX record.
So, in general, for any set of email addresses @[anything.]domain.com you have a MX record telling remote mail servers where to send that mail.
Of course the MX record name is mail.N.com, but I think you are implying that the in the Mail settings of Server Admin where it asks for domain name all I need to put there is the N.com, right?
What I mean is that you need to set the domain name to whatever domain name you expect to receive mail at.
If you want users to have email addresses in the form of [email protected], then you enter 'N.com'.
If you want users to have email addresses in the form of [email protected] then you enter 'mail.N.com'.
If you want both forms, enter one in the main domain and add the other(s) in the Advanced -> Hosting -> Local Host Aliases section.
Is there anything in the Mail settings that needs to have the full MX record name (mail.N.com)?
Yes. Either the 'domain name' or the 'Local Host Aliases' needs to contain the same thing as your MX record. That's because the MX record tells remote servers to send mail to this machine, but the machine won't accept the mail unless it is configured to do so.
What is the "host name" supposed to be?
This should be the name that remote servers see when this machine tries to send outgoing mail.
Ideally this should match the reverse DNS of your IP address, that way when it connects to a remote server it says "Hi, I'm $hostname" and the remote server can lookup the machine's IP address and see the same result. This will reduce the problem of remote servers thinking you're sending them spam.
If you only have a single IP address then this probably needs to be something like 'N.com'. If you don't have control over your reverse DNS then you're going to run into a problem.
Also in the user accounts (in Workgroup Manager) what should the "mail server name" be? Is it the host name or the domain name?
    Off hand, I don't know.
Also, why are all the default user email addresses [email protected] (the name I gave the server at setup)? Why doesn't the user accounts create [email protected] as the default address?
Presumably because the mail server says it is 'server.N.com' and therefore any accounts on that machine would be [email protected]. Changing the domain name (as above) should fix that.

  • How to read the "Name" field from document library in workflow?

    Hi,
The task I'm trying to accomplish looks pertty simple: I need to read a value of the item's "Name" field inside the workflow. I try to do it using LookupSPListItem and GetDynamicValueProperties activities. I can get value of the "Title"
field, also I created custom field and can read it too.
But the "Name" field always comes empty.
I guess I need to use some tricky syntax or this field has some different "internal name"?
The workflow is designed in VS 2013.

Thank you. Looks correct, since when I enter this path (FileLeafRef) into GetDynamicValueProperties
and change Entity Type to list of documents it changes to Name
    automatically.
But somehow it doesn't work too. (:
I also tried LinkFilenameNoMenu and LinkFilename
    - same result.
    EDIT: Solved. :)
Looks like FileLeafRef is not loaded by default by LookupSPListItem, so you have to pass this property name via
Properties collection. The bad news is that in this case other properties won't be loaded if you didn't add them to this collection.
    Anyway, it works. :)

  • Predefault "User Name" field with Login Name

    Hi,
Predefault in "LS Medical User Verification" BC does not work. I tried to do the following but all did not work:
    * Put a predefault value in the "User Name" field, System: Creator
    * Create a calc field "SCR Login", calc value: LoginName (). Set predefault of "User Name" field, Field: 'SCR Login"
    * Expose "SCR Login" in the applet. Field is blank in UI.
We are using the vanilla "LS Medical User Verification Applet" for user verification and we want to predefault the User Name field with the current user logged in. How can I achieve this?
    Thanks,
    Jasmin

    Hi,
I believe Predefault/Postdefault will only work with NewRecord even and since the User Verification Popup Applet does not go to that event on load that is why it does not work.
Since the client wanted to default the user name with the current user logged in, we just removed the User name field from the popup applet and pass the TheApplication().LoginName() to the Authentication Business Service.
    Thanks,
    Jasmin

  • Question about Domain and Host name fields.

Hello! Just a quick question, I currently have the Mail Server up and running although I'm a little unsure about what exactly needs to be entered into the users email application.
I've tested POP and IMAP using the information that I entered into the "Domain Name" field, and into the "Host name" field, and everything worked great.
    Example:
    Incoming Mail Server: mail.example.com
    Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.example.com
Although while setting up another site and including the normal mail setup via DNS I've also noticed that I can send and receive email by using other sites that belong to me, as long as they are pointing towards our server.
    Example:
    Incoming Mail Server: mail.mynewsite.com
    Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.mynewsite.com
So, I guess my question is whether its bad to use other websites in the incoming and outgoing mail server fields, or should I stick to the incoming and outgoing sites that I have listed in the Mail Server's 'Domain Name' and 'Host Name' fields?
I hope that made sense, thanks again for your help.
    Paul
    PowerMac G5, Xserve G5, and PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Does it matter if our users type mail.example.com
into the incoming mail server, or are they allowed to
use their own domain name "mail.mydomain.com" as long
as the DNS is setup correctly?
There is no intrinsic 'meaning' to hostnames entered into the mail client. These are merely converted to IP addresses, using available dns, and then the mail client communicates with the IP address, using whatever port number is applicable for the service required (e.g., port 25 for smtp, port 110 for pop). So you could use the hostname woohooo.mydomain.com for the smtp or pop server, as long as it resolves to the correct IP.
This enables laptop users to have the one smtp/pop hostname, with lan dns resolving it to the local private IP and ext dns resolving same hostname to wan IP.
There is also no need to have two separate hostnames for pop and smtp. These are typically used by ISPs because they have separate servers doing each job - one doing pop, one doing smtp. If one server does both (and there is no likelihood of splitting the services later) then just the one hostname for pop and smtp is fine.

  • E-Recruiting 6.0: Name Field

    Hi Experts,
I have the following questions as regards to 'name' field and would appreciate your help:
    1) I understand the name fields (first name and last name) cannot be customised.  But does E-Recruiting support the addition of middle name?  I can configure under Business Partner to add in the Middle name, but it did not display on the E-Recruiting screen or R/3 BP transaction. I am not sure whether standard E-Recruiting does not support it or I have not configure correctly.
    2) What is the table name which stores the name of a candidate and the applicant  objecet number?  I can see the name of the candidate in transaction BP, but i do not know where to find the applicant number. I need the information to for tracing and troubleshooting purposes.
    Many thanks,
    William

    Hello William,
with e-recruiting 600 support package 10 or 11 e-recruiting supports middle name, 2nd academic title and name prefixes in the web dynpro frontend as standard fields for candidates. Unfortunately it seems SAP is no longer adding such stuff to the BSP frontend. In transaction BP you should be able to see these fields if noone changed BP. But the fields are only visible when filled so you might have to change to edit mode to click this small button with the plus.
Personal data of candidates name, birthdate, gender, titles are stored in the standard business partner tables BUT000 and following. Address is saved in the tables of the central address service but needs an entry in IT5110. That's why adding an address in BP won't work while changing is possible.
To get the differnt keys which are used for the candidate I usually start from BP as I have a name. I simply use the sear help of BP to get the BP number. Then it's all about HRP1001 which stores all object relations. As BP is an external object from HR view (as is the User) you put the BP into SCLAS and number into SOBID field (dont forget leading zeros here) and you can get the CP number. With the CP number you can get the User and the candidate (NA) number. From the candidate you can get applications (ND) and candidacies (NE) and so on.

  • Project Center - How to Update / Correct the URL/Link stored in the Project Name field.

In the Project Center list, the link in the "Project Name" field for some projects take you the the project details page and some display the project schedule. How can I update/correct the links to display the project schedule?

Reason for this behavior is your enterprise project template which your project manager used for creating project.
We create Enterprise project template, associate PDP , Schedule, workflow according to our need then we use these Enterprise project template for project creation.
In your case some of the project manager must have used basic template( default template) for some project, Custom Enterprise template for some project and f you are using workflow then workflow template for some project, that is why you are able to see
PDP page first for some project and Schedule page for some project.
In order to change it you can change default PDP as schedule for Enterprise project template then open project save and publish them.

  • DNS names keep "flikkering" randomly in Apple Remote Desktop

    Hi there,
Since the update to ARD 3.7 all my DNS names keep 'switching' randomly between the several Computers (14)  i have in the network.
On site.. if you open ARD you see the DNS names changing every second or so.. to a random other name, which is also in the network. Often there are to the same DNS names (the computer name stays stable)
This wasn't the case in ARD 3.6.2.. and as a result .. is is now very hard to work with the machines via a remote VPN.. (it works but is is terrably slow)
any how i searched the net.. and one conclusion:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4190442
that nothing is wrong.. is not a good and correct answer in my opion..
because i have really seen working remote with ARD through a VPN tunnel (wich have not changed.. the only thing changed was ARD 3.7 and Maverick on most machines)
Any how.. i any one out there has any suggestion.. please let me know..
(its a 40 minute drive to the other place every time)
    Greetz
    CJ

Well, add my 50 computers to the list!
When I did the upgrade to ARD 3.7 on OS 10.8.5 all user names and passwords for those 50 computers were lost! Had to re-add them all one-by-one
... and after closing ARD the passwords were gone again Then I did a Permission Repair and at least this problem was fixed and the passwords "re-appeared" (I'm not sure whether this problem occured because I use a standard user account for work).
Anyway, later, I swapped the IP's of two OS X servers and modified their DNS entries accordingly. nslookup is properly resolving the names but ARD goes berserk with those two servers and always keeps using the wrong, 'historic' host names and/or IPs.
It has been annoying for quite a long time and many ARD versions that you could not override this stupid ARD name caching behaviour (or whatever it is) by manually editing the ARD clients host name/IP (hey, Apple, did you ever hear about "nslookup" or "dig"?). In ARD 3.6.2 it finally seemed to be fixed and now they re-introduced this buggy behaviour again!!!
If they are not able to program a query for the correct and current data, they should at least allow me to edit this information manually and permanently. This information must not be overwritten by any bizarre automatic mechansim using data that are completely out of date.
Does anybody know where the host name/IP information of the clients is stored and if it might be edited brute force? Or at least if there is a cache that can be emptied?
Hope this will be fixed soon and finally forever!
