DNS Problems with WRT54G

2 Nights ago we had storms in the area; next morning wife calls me at work and says that internet connection does not work. Get home and take a look at it. I can connect to router wired or wirelessly, was able to look at the configurations, etc. but when I try to access internet pages I get an error indicating DNS problems.
I have cycled power on cable modem (also Linksys but don't remember model number at the moment) and router. Still had the same problem wired and wirelessly.
I reset the router to factory defaults, connected to it both wired and wirelessly and still had the DNS rpoblems.
I reconfigured the router with my original security settings, connected to it wired and wirelessly and still had the DNS problems.
I connected directly to the cable modem and had no problems accessing internet at all.
Is there any way that I can force the router into updating DNS information? Or possibly reset DNS information?
I have run out of things that I know to try. I hope someone can help.

Usually a DNS problem is caused because the router is not connecting to the Internet properly.
Since you have a cable modem, you can usually leave the WRT54G set to its factory default settings, except that you might need to "Clone the MAC address" of the computer that works when connected to your modem.
Hope this helps.
If you need more help, please do the following:
1) state your ISP
2) state the make and exact model number of your modem  (not the WRT54G).
3)  Connect your computer, by ethernet cable, directly to your modem  (not the WRT54G).  Verify that you have a properly working Internet connection, then do the following test:
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.  Post all of the results, except if your "IP address" does not start with 192, then post only the first 3 digits of it, along with the rest of the info.  To copy the info to your post, highlight (select) the info, then use the copy (Ctrl-c) and paste (Ctrl-v) keys.

WHAT DO I DO TO FIX THIS?

You are correct.  Syncing should transfer any purchased media, including videos, from your device to your iTunes library provided your computer is authorized for the Apple ID used to make these purchases.  You mentioned that you have uninstalled iTunes before, but if you didn't follow this guide exactly, uninstalling iTunes and all of its components in the order specified, it may not have been successful so you should try again:  Windows XP or Windows Vista/7.

  • Network cable unplugged problem with WRT54G

I just got a WRT54G wireless router recently, and experienced some problems with it. There are 5 notebooks in my network using wireless card and 2 PCs connect to the router through cables. The router is with ver 7.00.1 firmware.
The router is working fine, the problem is sometimes it will show "Network cable unplugged" on my PC, and the whole network will be interruptted, the network will be resumed in few seconds and all machines need to get IP from the DHCP server again. It's quite annoying to be disconnected from middle of the work. I don't know what is the cause, seems like the router is re-reading it's configuration. I have tried to refresh the fireware but with no luck. Someone else got this problem before? anyone has a solution for this? Thanks a lot!
    Regards,
    Leo

Try the following tips to resolve your problem:
Disable the Ethernet network adapter if you are not using it. This applies, for example, when running a WiFi home network with computers that have built-in Ethernet adapters. To disable the adapter, double-click the small Network Cable Unplugged error window and choose the Disable option.
Check both ends of the Ethernet cable connected to the adapter to ensure they are not loose.
Replace the Ethernet cable with a different one to verify the cable is not damaged.
Update the network adapter driver software from the manufacturer's Web site.
Change the Link Speed and Duplex settings (using Device Manager) to use "100 Mbps Full Duplex" or "10 Mbps Full Duplex" instead of Auto Detect.
    Replace the Ethernet network adapter
    Good Luck,

  • Problems with WRT54GS and EasyLink after adding Comcast Digital Voice.

I had a working network. Cable modem (Comcast), WRT54GS, 2 wired PCs (one XP/SP3, one Vista Home Edition SP1), 2 wireless laptop PCs (one XP/SP3, one Vista Home Edition SP1) and a HP OfficeJet 7210 printer (connected to WRT54GS as network printer). Everything was fine and worked.
Then, I added Comcast Digital Voice. Obviously, they switched the cable modem for a new cable modem with the phone service option. Now, I can't print to the OfficeJet from the wired Vista PC, and EasyLink displays "initializing" for as long as I'll wait (5+ minutes).
I finally have to kill EasyLink from the TaskManager. Any help or ideas appreciated!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I solved the problem. It turns out the new cable modem and problem with EasyLink initializing were "red herrings".
The problem turned out to be a classic network problem! The hard-wired Vista PC had the wrong IP address. The wireless XP PC had the printer configured by network name  instead of network (i.e. IP) address.
When I deleted the printer on the Vista PC and re-added it with the correct address everything worked fine.
Apparently the printer got a new IP address from the server on the WRT54GS after the installation of the new modem. Also, it looks like Vista doesn't report a communication error for a network printer, but does for a USB direct connect.

  • Connection Problems with WRT54G V6

    Hey Guys,
This is the problem that im faced with.
For the last few weeks my router has been having problems with the internet connection.  For some reason there is no internet connection everytime i turn my computer back on after a session. To resolve this problem i perform a factory resest and then unplug my modem from it's power source leave it for 30 seconds and then connect it again... and this seems to work all and good for that period i use the computer for. But when i turn the computer back on the next day the internet connection is lost. The modem im using is a Motorola SB5100
Anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this?
    Thanks

You need to upgrade your router's firmware, reset it and re-configure it...
    Download 1.59 MB Firmware...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device: -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • File and Printer Sharing Problem with WRT54G

I am currently having problems sharing files over my network. My setup consists of:
    3 laptops (wireless)
    1 desktop (wired)
    WRT54G V6.0 router with firmware version 1.00.9.
All of the computers have File and Printer Sharing enabled, unique names, and are on the same workgroup. However none of the computers can see one another. When I try to view workgroup computers for my network places, the explorer window stops responding for about 30 sec. and then spits out a dialog with the error:
"Workgroup is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."
I think that this problem has something to do with the router, as I have been successfuly sharing files and a printer with these settings using a microsoft 802.11b router for over a year. After purchasing the linksys and swapping it out with my old router, filesharing no longer functions.
I have spent a little time browsing the forums and have seen other posts from people with simmiler problems, but was unable to find any solutions.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problems as you are, I have 2 computers on wired the other wireless the router is in between and I can't access from either side, although I can ping and remote connect but just cannot share files across the network. I have looked all over the forums too and there saying to ditch linksys and do something else.
Its not you thats caused this it is the firmware and the router that have the problems.
    My Specs:
    WRT-54G
    v5.0
That new firmware update 1.00.9 just isn't working right. I might downgrade my fireware to fix this problem.

  • Direct Access Server 2012 R2 Single NIC DNS problem with 8.1 Enterprise

    Dear helpers,
I am beginning to rip my hair over the following problem and I am asking for some guidance:
I have setup DA on a server 2012 R2 with the simple wizard using one NIC. I have opened up port 443 to my  DA Server and operations status is showing green on everything. I have used Djoin to join a remote win 8.1 enterprise client to our domain and
setup DA. I can see that my tunnel is established and the client shows up as an IPHTTPS client on my server:
    Role                       : client
    URL                        : https://vpn.ourdomain.com:443/IPHTTPS
    Last Error Code            : 0x0
Interface Status           : IPHTTPS interface active
Connection status on client is stuck in connecting and the eventlog on client gives me following error:
The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
    with settings:
               Adapter Name : {424F50B4-BF1A-4D96-81FA-7D7436A99F07}
               Host Name : TEST
               Primary Domain Suffix : ourdomain.com
               DNS server list :
                     172.16.8.1
Sent update to server : <?>
               IP Address(es) :
                 172.16.8.110
The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the update request it sent to the DNS server timed out. The most likely cause of this is that the DNS server authoritative for the name it was attempting to register or update is not running at
    this time.
I understand why this is failing because it seems like it is contacting the local DNS to register and that's wrong.
    Get-DaConnectionStatus gives me the following:
    Status    : Error
    Substatus : CouldNotContactDirectAccessServer
I can ping the name on the DA server and also the IPv6 address, I can also do nslookup if i set the server used to my internal DNS-servers IPv6 address(DNS and DA server = same machine). My DA Client GPO is being applied to the client and i get an NRPT table
    looking as follows:
    Settings for DirectAccess-NLS.ourdomain.com
    DirectAccess (Certification Authority)  :
    DirectAccess (IPsec)                    : disabled
    DirectAccess (DNS Servers)              :
DirectAccess (Proxy Settings)           : Use default browser settings
    Settings for vpn.ourdomain.com
    DirectAccess (Certification Authority)  :
    DirectAccess (IPsec)                    : disabled
    DirectAccess (DNS Servers)              :
DirectAccess (Proxy Settings)           : Use default browser settings
    Settings for .ourdomain.com
    DirectAccess (Certification Authority)  :
    DirectAccess (IPsec)                    : disabled
    DirectAccess (DNS Servers)              : fd1f:6801:cc14:3333::1
DirectAccess (Proxy Settings)           : Bypass proxy
I cannot reach any internal resources by name or IPv4 address except the DA server.
I will gladly provide more info if needed
    Please help!
    //Cris

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
Firstly, computer certificates are necessary for DirectAccess.
In addition, it is no need to assign an IPv6 address on all the servers. In Windows server 2012/R2, the
    Built-in NAT64 and DNS64 support for accessing IPv4-only resources.
If you select Configure DirectAccess Clients with DNS client suffix search list and add additional suffixes to the list,
you can search for short, unqualified computer names in more than one specified DNS domain.
For more detailed information about DNS suffix search list, please refer to the link below:
Step 2: Configure the DirectAccess Server
    Best regards,
    Susie

  • DNS problems with Snow Leopard. Can't upgrade to Mountain Lion either.

My Macbook Pro has been working quite well since I got it just over a year ago, until last week when I shut it down to go stay at my parents house. I turned it on when I got there and it automatically connected to the network because i go there often, however when I tried to open up a browser it would not work. I opened up several of the other browsers that I have but all of them kept saying they couldn’t connect to the server. I thought perhaps my dad had changed the router settings or something since last time I'd been there since the internet was working perfectly at my house only two hours previous. He said he hadn't changed anything and he was right, the internet worked perfectly through my sisters PC and through his ipad and my iphone. I later took it round to a friend’s house where it remembered his network too but still would not open addresses in the browser and when I finally got home to my house, I found I had the same problem. With every network I connected to I could update my apps and software, use my torrent client, ping certain IP's and connect with various other things that require internet connection, but the browser still never worked. After some research I came to the conclusion that it was most likely a DNS issue, I found this odd as I had not changed any sort of settings at all recently, except for turning the firewall on, which I turned off be3fore trying to troubleshoot. I  have tried virtually everything that has been suggested on the internet like Flushing DNS cache, resetting PRAM, bringing my network to the top, turning airport on and off, connecting through ethernet, renewing DHCP lease, using google IP as DNS, checking for set proxies, repairing disk permissions, resetting router, checking router settings, the list goes on and on. The last thing I tried was to copy the com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist file then delete the old one and paste the new one back in, since then my Mac cannot connect to the internet in any of the previous ways.
After pulling my hair out for days, I thought the only option left was to upgrade to Mountain Lion, which I was planning on doing anyway. After downloading it though, I came to the option to select the disk I want to install to only to see my primary and only disk open my Mac coloured faintly and telling me that "This disk cannot be used to start up the computer". After more research I found that there were a few issues, none of which I have. I’ve never used time machine so there is no issue with any set partition for it, I have no other partitions on it at all either so I cannot use the resizing trick that seems to help most people. I would normally just backup all my data at this point and do a fresh install, but haven't got the funds to purchase a another TB at this point and I have over 650GB worth of valuable data on the Mac. Could someone pleeeease help me!?!?!

You cannot go to Mountain Lion, as stedman1 states.
But you can upgrade to Lion, possibly.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2404

  • DNS problems with Snow Leopard

I have had this problem for a long time, but it is especially annoying me today. My Mountain Lion iMac (2012 model) is slow to establish an internet connection when it wakes from sleep. My Snow Leopard machine has a much crisper and reliable connection. And, once the connection on the iMac balks ("you are not connected to the internet"), it takes longer than it should to correct itself. I can get to new sites (ones I haven't tried) more quickly than I can with the ones that failed. That's why I think this is a DNS issue.
But there's more. The Apple-provided software actually takes the connection down almost always. The App Store and iTunes will almost certainly bust the connection. If I try to listen to a sample on iTunes, it will invariably stall at midpoint, say it's buffering, and then crap out. Lots of "Error -1009" messages (or something like that). What should I do?
When I get a connection going, as with Netflix or something streaming, it's generally stable. That's why it's only an aggravating problem and not quite a deal breaker. But still, why am I turing to a Snow Leopard machine to get my work done?
    Thanks for your help!
[Other details: I use a lousy 2Wire router from ATT, which has always been somewhat sketchy with the connection. I stopped using Safari because, for some reason, it has a higher success rate than Safari. Just weird and no one has had an answer.]

Thanks, Barney. I've put these in and will let you know if things get better. My first check seemed better, but you know how these things go. I seem to remember putting the Google addresses in before and seeing the problem return. I can't say I really understand what DNS does.
Also, I added the DNS servers, but there is still a greyed out "Search Domain" listed as gateway.2wire.net, which, obviously, is a domain assocaited with this router.
I'll give you points once I figure out if this is a solutuion.

  • Admin problem with WRT54G

I am logging into my WRT54G to try to upgrade my firmware. The problem is that when I log in, I get a error on the page and it will not bring up any of the links or icons that I would use to go to Administration or check my wireless or anything. Does anyone even know where to start with this? I am using XP Pro and IE6 SP2.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Derek

If you are getting a 401 error, the router most likely did not accept your user name and password.  The defaults are:  user name is left blank, and password is "admin"  (with no quotes).  If you changed these, then you will need to enter whatever you changed them to.  If you cannot remember what you set them to, then the only other option is to reset the router to factory defaults.  This will reset the user name and password to the values noted above.
Sometimes this problem is caused by communication errors between the computer and router.  To correct this, do the following:
Use Internet Explorer, it usually works.
    JavaScript must be enabled.
Use a computer that is wired to the router.
In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall. Note that some Zone Alarm users have had to uninstall the firewall to get it turned off.
If you cannot get anything at 192.168.1.1 then perhaps this is not your router's address. Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key. Look at the "Default Gateway". Is it 192.168.1.1 ? Point your browser to the "Default Gateway", then login to your router.

  • SMTP password problem with WRT54G or WRV200

I have a problem sending email in that the SMTP password cannot be successfully sent. I have found that if the router is rebooted, email can be sent for maybe 10 minutes. After that time, the password is refused no matter how many times it is tried. I have tried Thunderbird and Apple Mail as the email client and they both behave the same. I have tried 2 different routers, the WRT54G and WRV200 and they behave the same. I have connected my computer directly to the modem and email can be sent successfully all the time. I am on SBC/AT&T DSL service - it's Yahoo email servers. My computer is a Mac running OX X v10.5 (Leopard). I normally use Thunderbird as my email client and it has worked for some time.

ISP is SBC/AT&T DSL. The email servers are on Yahoo. I am not sure of the question about private/public address of the router. The IP address of the router is assigned by SBC/AT&T - I guess that's public. The firmware of the WRT54G is the latest from your website. I don't really have a Windows computer to give a verdict on whether it happens there. I have tried using the Apple Mail application and it behaves in the same way as the Thunderbird client. Email sending is normal for about 10 minutes after booting the router and then after 10 minutes the sending of the SMTP password fails. Rebooting the router will get you another 10 minutes of successful email sending. As I described bnefore: If I take the router out of my network and connect my computer directly to the DSL modem, then email can be sent at any time. The computer is logging onto the SBC/AT&T network PPPoE with no router involved. Of course, I do not have to change any settings in my email client for this experiment. This proves to me that the email client is working and configured correctly. Keep in mind that this email client has been working correctly for some time (years) in this configuration. I am always able to receive email from the POP server. Message Edited by darowa on 03-16-2008 02:28 PM
