Do i need to learn ABAP?
Hi,
It is my understanding that the ability to code ABAP is a key capability of a technical BW consultant.
I have no experience in ABAP, but i am familiar with .NET development.
Some questions:
1. Is ABAP knowledge such important for a BW consultant?
2. What is the best approach to learn ABAP (Course, book)?Any recommendation on a valuable book or course?
3. I haerd of ABAP Objects, what's the difference between it and classic ABAP?
3. Is ABAP knowledge a competence tested in certification?

ABAP can be treated as a programming language in SAP.
In BW implemenations we use ABAP for coding update rules if it is necessary.
One should have atleast some basic knowlegde in ABAP when working in SAP.

Need to Learn ABAP OO and Workflow concepts.
Hello Mates,
I am just a 2 weeks old in Sap - ABAP, I was working on MS-.NET.
But somehow ABAP is attracting me more than any other language, I did certification as well.
But somehow I am not able to understand the ABAP OO concepts inregards to workflow and exactly how to apply.
I am reading every thread related to this from last 3 weeks now but didnt get any link/satisfactory answer to how to enhance my skill and use my OO knowledge of .NET in ABAP.
I am very much familiar with OO concepts and dont want to read those again, but what I exactly want to read about
1. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF OO IN ABAP.
2. WHERE TO APPLY/ MAY BE HOW TO USE THOSE.
3. ANYTHING RELATED TO ABAP WORKFLOW.
if anyone used/or have knowledge of any such book/forum/blog/posts/sdn.forum/ please do let me know.
This will help me in great level.

If you would like to drop me a line in future, you can do that, I don´t mind, maybe we could find topics to talk about. And about that abap feature/ future post... I don´t care about the points (I don´t ask for any...) but the points count is the indicator of ones behavior:
The guy, who always asks and nobody answers is selfish and not a candidate for me to answer. You must help to get helped, that is my motto. You must prove you´re worth the time and effort.
I asked a question under B1 forum once where the top 1 contributor there tried hard to help because he knew I am active around here. That was a nice feeling. And from my point of view... get some points to prove you´re a nice guy and I will do my best to help you with any problem that may appear. I am not the only one who thinks this way, I think.
But that is not a rule here, just my opinion.
Maybe... one day, you will remember my words and write a blog for the beginners or help in some way to pay back what you have learnt here. Become a member of the community, spread the knowledge... and let´s talk:))

BADIs
Business add-ins are enhancements to the standard version of the system.
Business Add-In is a new SAP enhancement technique based on ABAP Objects.
They can be inserted into the SAP system based on specific user requirements.
Each Business Add-In has:
at least one Business Add-In definition
a Business Add-In interface
a Business Add-In class that implements the interface
In order to enhance a program, a Business Add-In must first be defined
Subsequently two classes are automatically generated:
An interface with IF_EX_ inserted between the first and second characters of the BADI name.
An adapter class with CL_EX_ inserted between the first and second characters of the BADI name.
The Application developer creates an interface for this Add-In.
There are multiple ways of searching for BADI.
Finding BADI Using CL_EXITHANDLER=>GET_INSTANCE
Finding BADI Using SQL Trace (TCODE-ST05).
Finding BADI Using Repository Information System (TCODE- SE84).
1. Go to the Transaction, for which we want to find the BADI, take the example of Transaction VD02. Click on System->Status. Double click on the program name. Once inside the program search for CL_EXITHANDLER=>GET_INSTANCE.
Make sure the radio button In main program is checked. A list of all the programs with call to the BADIs will be listed.
The export parameter EXIT_NAME for the method GET_INSTANCE of class CL_EXITHANDLER will have the user exit assigned to it. The changing parameter INSTANCE will have the interface assigned to it. Double click on the method to enter the source code.Definition of Instance would give you the Interface name.
2. Start transaction ST05 (Performance Analysis).
Set flag field "Buffer trace"
Remark: We need to trace also the buffer calls, because BADI database tables are buffered. (Especially view V_EXT_IMP and V_EXT_ACT)
Push the button "Activate Trace". Start transaction VA02 in a new GUI session. Go back to the Performance trace session.
Push the button "Deactivate Trace".
Push the button "Display Trace".
The popup screen "Set Restrictions for Displaying Trace" appears.
Now, filter the trace on Objects:
V_EXT_IMP
V_EXT_ACT
Push button "Multiple selections" button behind field Objects
Fill: V_EXT_IMP and V_EXT_ACT
All the interface class names of view V_EXT_IMP start with IF_EX_. This is the standard SAP prefix for BADI class interfaces. The BADI name is after the IF_EX_.
So the BADI name of IF_EX_CUSTOMER_ADD_DATA is CUSTOMER_ADD_DATA
3. Go to Maintain Transaction (TCODE- SE93).
Enter the Transaction VD02 for which you want to find BADI.
Click on the Display push buttons.
Get the Package Name. (Package VS in this case)
Go to TCode: SE84->Enhancements->Business Add-inns->Definition
Enter the Package Name and Execute.
Here you get a list of all the Enhancement BADIs for the given package MB.

How to develop BADI
DEFINING THE BADI
1) execute Tcode SE18.
2) Specify a definition Name : ZBADI_SPFLI
3) Press create
4) Choose the attribute tab. Specify short desc for badi.. and specify the type :
multiple use.
5) Choose the interface tab
6) Specify interface name: ZIF_EX_BADI_SPFLI and save.
7) Dbl clk on interface name to start class builder . specify a method name (name,
level, desc).

Linese;ection instance methos some desc
8) place the cursor on the method name desc its parameters to define the interface.

I_carrid import spfli-carrid some
I_connid import spefi-connid some
9) save , check and activate adapter class proposed by system is
ZCL_IM_IM_LINESEL is genereated.
IMPLEMENTATION OF BADI DEFINITION
1) EXECUTE tcode se18.choose menuitem create from the implementation menubar.
2) Specify aname for implementation ZIM_LINESEL
3) Specify short desc.
4) Choose interface tab. System proposes a name fo the implementation class.
ZCL_IM_IMLINESEL which is already generarted.
5) Specify short desc for method
6) Dbl clk on method to insert code..(check the code in AAA).
7) Save , check and activate the code.

Data types are the actual type definitions in the ABAP Dictionary. They allow you to define elementary types, reference types, and complex types that are visible globally in the system. The data types of database tables are a subset of all possible types, namely flat structures.
Data Elements
Data elements in the ABAP Dictionary describe individual fields. They are the smallest indivisible units of the complex types described below, and are used to specify the types of columns in the database. Data elements can be elementary types or reference types.
Structures
A structure is a sequence of any other data types from the ABAP Dictionary, that is, data elements, structures, table types, or database tables. When you create a structure in the ABAP Dictionary, each component must have a name and a data type. In an ABAP program, you can use the TYPE addition to refer directly to a structure.
If you define a local data type in a program by referring to a structure as follows:
TYPES <t> TYPE <structure>.
Table Types
Table types are construction blueprints for internal tables that are stored in the ABAP Dictionary.
When you create a table type in the ABAP Dictionary, you specify the line type, access type, and key. The line type can be any data type from the ABAP Dictionary, that is, a data element, a structure, a table type, or the type of a database table. You can also enter a predefined Dictionary type directly as the line type, in the same way that you can with a domain.
Type Groups
Before Release 4.5A, it was not possible to define standalone types in the ABAP Dictionary to which you could refer using a TYPE addition in an ABAP program. It was only possible to refer SAP AG BC - ABAP Programming
Data Types in the ABAP Dictionary to flat structures. Structures in programs corresponded to the structures of database tables or structures in the ABAP Dictionary. In ABAP programs, you could only refer to database tables and structures in the ABAP Dictionary using LIKE. It was, however, possible to refer to individual components of the Dictionary type. Complex local data types such as internal tables or deep structures had no equivalent in the ABAP Dictionary. The solution to this from Release 3.0 onwards was to use type groups. Type groups were based on the include technique, and allowed you to store any type definitions globally in the Dictionary by defining them using TYPES statements.
Views:
There are 4 types views are avilable in SAP.
Database View - To club more than one table
Projection View - To hide fields in one table
Maintanance View - To maintain database records in table
Help View - To provide help for a fields (Same functionality as Search help. This is outdated)
View are improves perfromance in the following aspects
1. If you want to use more than two table in 'JOIN' condition better to use Views . It will improves performance of a program
2. If you want to use mutiple FOR ALL ENTRIES clause, better to club all SELECT statement in a view.
Lock Objects:
Lock objects are use in SAP to avoid the inconsistancy at the time of data is being insert/change into database.
SAP Provide three type of Lock objects.
- Read Lock(Shared Locked)
protects read access to an object. The read lock allows other transactions read access but not write access to
the locked area of the table
- Write Lock(exclusive lock)
protects write access to an object. The write lock allows other transactions neither read nor write access to
the locked area of the table.
- Enhanced write lock (exclusive lock without cumulating)
works like a write lock except that the enhanced write lock also protects from further accesses from the
same transaction.
You can create a lock on a object of SAP thorugh transaction SE11 and enter any meaningful name start with EZ Example EZTEST_LOCK.
Use: you can see in almost all transaction when you are open an object in Change mode SAP could not allow to any other user to open the same object in change mode.
Example: in HR when we are enter a personal number in master data maintainance screen SAP can't allow to any other user to use same personal number for changes.
Technicaly:
When you create a lock object System automatically creat two function module.
1. ENQUEUE_<Lockobject name>. to insert the object in a queue.
2. DEQUEUE_<Lockobject name>. To remove the object is being queued through above FM.
You have to use these function module in your program.
Search Helps:
These are two types.
Elementary n Collective.
1) Elementary search helps describe a search path. The elementary search help must define where the data of the hit list should be read from (selection method), how the exchange of values between the screen template and selection method is implemented (interface of the search help) and how the online input help should be defined (online behavior of the search help).
2) Collective search helps combine several elementary search helps. A collective search help thus can offer several alternative search paths.
3)An elementary search help defines the standard flow of an input help.
4) A collective search help combines several elementary search helps. The user can thus choose one of several alternative search paths with a collective search help.
5)A collective search help comprises several elementary search helps. It combines all the search paths that are meaningful for a field.
6)Both elementary search helps and other search helps can be included in a collective search help. If other collective search helps are contained in a collective search help, they are expanded to the level of the elementary search helps when the input help is called.

BDC:
Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the process of transferring data from one SAP System to another SAP system or from a non-SAP system to SAP System.
Features :
BDC is an automatic procedure.
This method is used to transfer large amount of data that is available in electronic medium.
BDC can be used primarily when installing the SAP system and when transferring data from a legacy system (external system).
BDC uses normal transaction codes to transfer data.
Types of BDC :
CLASSICAL BATCH INPUT (Session Method)
CALL TRANSACTION
BATCH INPUT METHOD:
This method is also called as CLASSICAL METHOD.
Features:
Asynchronous processing.
Synchronous Processing in database update.
Transfer data for more than one transaction.
Batch input processing log will be generated.
During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
CALL TRANSACTION METHOD :
This is another method to transfer data from the legacy system.
Features:
Synchronous processing. The system performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
Updating the database can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The program specifies the update type.
Transfer data for a single transaction.
Transfers data for a sequence of dialog screens.
No batch input processing log is generated.

Should a basis admin learn ABAP?
Dear gurus:
I am a basis admin with 15 years experience and I am 45 years old.
1) Sometimes my debugging needs some ABAP which is very unfamiliar to me.
I want to stay in basis area for 10 more years.
Do you think it's worthwhile to learn ABAP for debugging purpose?
2) Also, I am NOT a specialist in basis -- basically I am OK for all basis areas.
In order to make me more marketable, what new SAP technology should I
focus?

if you could quickly describe what Basis mean for you, our potential advise could be better targeted.
1) If you install SAP systems and reorg. database, then you have no use for ABAP. On the other hand if you basis also means portal administration, ABAP roles building and this kind of stuff, then it could be beneficial for you to understand some ABAP, in this case for security reasons + understand the difference between ABAP and Java (so you can do similar things for portal/ PI - Java stack in general).
2) How much do you know about Java? The more you know the better marketability you gain. At least that is my opinion about Java and last few months running around with Java knowledge. Everybody wears a sticker on his/her forehead saying "ABAP" but sticker "Java" is very rare...
In general answer for 2) is closely tight to the question above: what does basis mean for you.

Hello everyone,
I understand Script logic very well, but I'd like to learn ABAP also. I've programmed in T-SQL, a bit in VB.NET, and a lot in Script logic, but I know little to nothing about how to program in ABAP.
What I'd like to start with is to find out (beginning to end) how to take something like:
*WHEN Account
*IS "Net_Income"
*REC(Factor=1,Account="Equity")
*ENDWHEN
*COMMIT
And translate that into ABAP so that I could get it to work with a BPC NW app. Is there a book I could buy that would show me end to end how to do this? Maybe a book on BW and ABAP? I don't think doing this is simple...

BADIs are written in ABAP, so I think you are both talking about the same thing
You'll want to focus on learning ABAP Objects because this is the modern ABAP programming paradigm and BPC's BADIs and most of the BPC application code are based on the ABAP Objects framework. A couple of book recommendations I've seen (though I have not read either):
Next Generation ABAP Development (2nd edition) - [http://www.amazon.com/Next-Generation-ABAP-Development-2nd/dp/1592293522/] - (Rich appears on this forum sometimes to answer BPC questions)
ABAP Objects: Introduction to Programming SAP Applications - [http://www.amazon.com/ABAP-Objects-Introduction-Programming-Applications/dp/0201750805/]
Both of these books go into way more detail than you will probably need in order to program simple BADIs, but you can read the parts you need, and when you run into something new and need more information, these books should cover the topic.

Learning ABAP, which possibilities?

I want to learn ABAP, but which possibilities do I have to get a working GUI with a Compiler or something similar? First I thought about setting up a whole system with downloading and trying this test system from here: ftp://ftp.sap.com/../pub/linuxlab/test_drive/NW4/i386
(I'm using Gentoo Linux)
Due to some errors, I wasn't able to get this system running, so I aborted trying this. (First of all, it didn't find the SAPEULA, although it was here, then it didn't find some system libraries although I have them all. Probably that's why Red-Hat-rpm-packages are no good choice! )
Then I tried to get at least this GUI (ftp://ftp.sap.com/pub/sapgui/java/700r2.1/) running, but I need some connection code as argument, which I don't have. Ok, I knew that I can't connect to any server, but I though about getting some test account in this way.
Is there any possibility to test and execute ABAP code?try downloading and installing MINI SAP
