Do I proceed or give up?

I need advice from people in the know, which obviously, I'm not one of. I'm a long time Novell devotee, but 2 years ago went to the dark side and installed a Windows SBS 2003 server and used it for some time for my little business (5 user maintenance license). However, I kept my maintenance for Novell NOWS paid up. I think perhaps 20 months ago I may have posted a question here about having a SLES server with GroupWise and Groupwise mobility server (GMS) on one piece of hardware. I may have misinterpreted KBoyle's advice at the time when he suggested it was perfectly possible for one physical server to do this by having GMS on a Virtual machine.
About 3 months ago I took the leap back to Novell and got SLES11SP3 with OES11 Add-ons (SP2?) running on a 'new' server. I've got file sharing working from the SLES server. I got Groupwise 2014 running on it, no problems. Then I installed a XEN virtual machine and that's running. However getting GMS working on this VM has proved a headache when today - after submitting a SR - we realized that we could not communicate (other than Ping) with the host server from the VM. The Novell Engineer advised I should not have set up my servers this way. He advised I should have my main server set up as a host, and create one Virtual machine for GroupWise, and a second VM for GMS. I was not told where I should have my shared folders (a third VM?).
Until 2 months ago I had never set up a VM, so please forgive my ignorance. I need advice please - if I am to stick with Novell & GroupWise - on how to proceed:
1. Do I blow the whole lot away and start again?
2. Do I keep my SLES server, and create two or three VMs as discussed above to cater for Shared files; GroupWise, and GMS?
3. How do I move my GroupWise 2014 data from the host to a VM on the host?
I have to say here that I find Novell documentation on all this quite poor: it all seems to be down to so much detail, and there's not an overview of what and how is required.
Looking forward to suggestions, please?

I would set up 3 VMs, one for OES, second for GW and third for GMS... Maybe it would be easier for you to use the free VMware ESXi hypervisor instead of SLES+XEN as the "host" operatingsystem?

  • New iMac turns on/loads fine, but trying to install Snow Leopard gives 'bad RAM' 3 beeps + grey screen

New iMac arrived today, turned on and loaded fine.
After getting to the desktop, I inserted the Snow Leopard disk and restarted the computer.
I held alt at startup and selected the Snow Leopard disc from the options.
The computer proceeded to give me the 'bad RAM' error: grey screen + 3 beeps, over and over.
So did I get an iMac with bad RAM? Poorly seated RAM?
    Very frustrating, I'm disappointed Apple.

Good luck: Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than what came with your Mac
Earlier versions of OS X, including the present retail version now sold, contain drivers incompatible with the firmware installed on new Macs. You will get the exact same error code you are observing.
I'm having a hard time believing it is a RAM problem if the computer works fine in OS Lion but gives the error when installing Snow Leopard.
This has nothing to do with memory. If you don't believe me run Apple Hardware Test and see for yourself.
If AHT passes and your iMac boots Lion, Apple will tell you to pound sand.
    As I said earlier,
A new iMac should have shipped with Lion. Attempting to install an earlier OS version will not work.

  • Replacement options for keys on mid-2009 MBP

i have a mid-2009 MBP that i am extremely unhappy with and which i /was/ going to just give to my mom but it acts so oddly that i am afraid she will get too confused and won't be able to use it.
/anyway/ i had this thing in to the genius bar and asked them to replace all the keys as there are a lot of these that are very wobbly and make typing sort of a challenge. the technician asked me to tell him which /specific/ keys were a problem - i didn't sit down to test this - and then proceeded to give me some kind of song and dance explaining the technical reasons why the keys would fail and he assured me that as long as there was not some failure with the mechanism under the keys that they would replace the keys for the life of the machine at no charge.
    two questions:
    1. i have written down the 23 keys that feel like they are hard to work with and i am wondering if it is unreasonable to expect them to just replace all of them now so i (or the person i give the machien to) won't have to deal with this periodically.
    2. is it in fact the case that i should expect to get other keys fixed for free when they go bad?
    3. is there some reason why the technician at the genius bar may not have wanted me to do another repair on this machine within the warranty period since i have had it in complaining about various issues very often and they finally found a battery and a logic board problem about three months before my warranty expiration? i mean, i have not trusted the advice i get which is a complete 180 degrees from when i was first on mac before i had to move to PC and i am wondering if there may be a reason why they did not want to simply go ahead and do the key replacement for me under warranty. it seems really sort of mean and cheap to turn me away on this at the 11th hour with some kind of verbal assurance when i've never been happy with the machine or the explanations on the problems with the machine anyway.
is there some kind of magic words to get them to just replace all the keys so i won't have this as an ADDED problem to my battery life, beachball hangs, sleep battery drain, etc, etc, etc?
    THANKS

What Bob is saying is that according to the table there are different versions of Bootcamp which can be run on each Mac which load the various drivers for the specific versions on Windows.
Windows 8 is designed to run 64bit but it will run 32bit as well it just means you dont get all the benefits and can loose Disc & Ram, but the host mac needs a 64bit compatible processor and it needs to meet the spec for the version of Windows being run and you need the various drivers.
Often this level of support and development wont be provided on older machines as they knnow it will run into problems at some point.
That doesnt mean you cant or shouldnt go for it, as long as you accept it may not be a stright forward install

  • Connecting a Computer to an HDTV

    Hey everyone,
One of the most frequently asked home theater questions we see here on the forums is “How do I connect my computer to my HDTV?”  Well, depending upon the model(s) you own you may have a number of options.
For starters, the most common option to connect a computer to an HDTV is to use a VGA cable.  Often referred to as RGB, D-sub 15 or even generic “PC” inputs on many TVs, these connections are present on a healthy majority of desktop and laptop computers.  Some laptops will even feature miniature versions of these ports that can be easily converted to a full-size VGA connection through the use of a special adapter.
The second option, connecting the two using component cables, is primarily used by consumers that own an older HDTV.  Most often found in the home theater section of a store, these cables are not only relatively inexpensive, but can also generally be identified by their red, blue, and green color coding as explained by Rodney-GSHQ in this other thread.  There is, however, one slight problem: most video cards do not feature component outputs.
The next available option is to use a Digital Video Interface (DVI) cable.  These connections are quite common on newer desktop computers, and are often considered to be the digital successor to VGA.  That’s right – everything up to this point has been analog only.
Last, but not least, you may have the option of connecting your computer to your HDTV using an HDMI cable.  HDMI outputs are typically only found on newer (and higher-end) computers, but are considered by many to be capable of providing the highest-quality digital signals available.
Regardless of which method you choose, remember that you will need a separate cable to run audio from your computer to your TV!  Additionally, it’s strongly recommended that you double-check your TV and computer’s owner’s manuals for step-by-step instructions as there are a number of precautions that you should take before attempting to connect the two.
Still not sure how to proceed?  Give us a call at 1-800-GEEK-SQUAD (1-800-433-5778) and we’d be glad to help you out!

I know for a FACT that HDMI and DVI are intercompatible. I was talking about the sets themselves. NOT the specs. Many HDTVs have EDID tables that are not compliant with PC signal specs or in some cases, they give off EDID information that isn't understood by various electronic devices that rely on such information. This is a well-known fact and has been a particular problem with older sets. Yes, you can tweak the signal from your PC using PowerStrip, the Nvidia/ATI driver hacks, or whatever applies to your particular setup, but those don't always work. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't work until it works out of the box and there are only a few sets that will work with PC signals over anything other than VGA by design. I know this from my own testing done at Best Buy on nearly two dozen of the 1080P LCDs with my own HDMI/VGA equipped notebooks using the latest (non-Beta) drivers from Nvidia, ATI/AMD, and Intel. I tested both HDMI and VGA from the notebooks for nearly three hours. VGA was the clear winner for out of the box connectivity on most of the sets and HDMI lost big time because the signal was either not displayed at all or displayed improperly with no clear way to resolve the issue. The Sony Bravia LCDs were the only ones that passed both the HDMI and VGA connectivity tests that I did. You simply got lucky with the two LCDs you have used because they were likely intended for multi-media use. The Westinghouse certainly was at any rate since they have always catered to that market.

  • Any help or opinion/advice would be so appreciated...

    - Original iPhone worked flawlessly for 2 years. In June of this year, began to experience locked screen issues, so went to AT&T store hoping to get a replacement phone. Was told I could not, I had no choice but to 'upgrade', which I did not want to do, as it would recommit me to an additional 2 year contract. But having no choice, I agreed.
    - The new phone (3G), gave me issues within the first week. I went back to AT&T (as I was assured when I purchased that I had 30 days to return/replace if needed), only to be told they were so sorry I was misinformed by the sales girl (and that she had done this several times), and they could not help me unless I returned the phone, and purchased again, this time for $50 more, because the sales girl who sold it to me had charged me incorrectly the first time. After an hour of back and forth, and my refusing to pay more, they recommended I go to the Apple store, and try to exchange it there.
    - I decided to call Apple support, and explained the situation. The very nice person I spoke to, directed me to the Apple store, telling me he would take care of it, all I had to do was walk in, give my name, and would be given a new phone. So, I went.
    - The Apple store, proceeded to give me a 'new' phone, but when I noticed that it came in a white box, I asked the question of whether it was a new phone, or a refurbished. I was given, what sounded like a prepared speech, of how it was against the law for them to sell refurbished items without disclosing them as such, and that the phone I was receiving was NOT refurbished, and only in the white box, 'to save costs on the fancy Apple boxes'. Naive me, asked them if they promised. They said, they promised.
    - Within 2 weeks or so, my 'new' (found out by reading these threads it in fact, was not new, the serial number begins with 5), began to act up. Frustrated, I called the Apple support person back. As nice as he was the first time, he patiently tried to help me sort the issues, and instructed me to try restore/reset/etc. In doing so, my phone locked on me. Frustration level elevated now, I decided, enough of this, I am going to just spend the extra money required and buy a brand new phone, as to eliminate this madness and have peace of mind that my additional 2 year commitment would be with a working phone. I left that one plugged in to my Macbook, locked, and headed to the Apple store (45 minutes away, which is why I didn't buy it there in the first place, gas prices are so high).
    - Purchased new phone, installed the 3.1 update, and... here we go again. Having similar problems to all those described in the monster threads.
I have been working with the nice Apple support guy for a few days, and he has been very helpful, but despite doing all as instructed, my phone is still acting up. I have 1 day left on my 30 day since purchase and am so torn on what to do. Do I ...
    - go back to the Apple store, get a 'new' (refurbished even though they promise they are not) phone, and risk not having peace of mind for the next 2 years?
    Or
    - Buy a new phone AGAIN, this time, never installing any update until it's well documented that it won't affect my phone.
    OR.... ?
My phone is my main device for all I do. I need it working. Am so extremely frustrated right now. Not only have I had to spend money I simply do not have, my 2 year commitment keeps getting restarted every time I exchange/get new. Not to mention, I am charged the activation fee each time as well. *****.
Am new to this support forum, so please bear with me if I've done anything out of order by posting here. And, just so all of you who read this know, I linked the nice Apple guy to the monster threads here, and he did read through them (skimming I assume), so, Apple, at least to my knowledge, is aware of what we are going through.
Thanks so much for letting me off-load. Any help or opinion/advice would be so appreciated.

Thanks so much for your help Allan. If you don't mind, I'd like to respond/clarify a few things...

Apple and AT&T sell the iPhone at the same price. AT&T's subsidized price for the iPhone is the same at an Apple store, an AT&T store, a Best Buy, or Walmart.
I was charged a different price by AT&T (sales girl error), thus why they would not give me a new phone unless I paid the additional fee). I didn't want to pay, as I didn't see why her error should be my responsibility. I had no idea she had charged me wrong.
There is not an activation fee when activating an iPhone exchanged under warranty.
I was charged, all 3 times.
Per the written warranty, an exchange under warranty will be a new or refurbished iPhone with no way to tell the difference between the two. The serial number beginning with 5 does not mean refurbished. An exchange under warranty is provided in a white unsealed box, which is called a service unit and can be new or refurbished.
I guess what bothers me is that they lied to me when I asked.
Having a new iPhone doesn't ensure it will last 2 years with no problems, and having an exchange under warranty which can be new or refurbished doesn't ensure this either and doesn't mean it won't. The iPhone includes a standard one year warranty, which can be extended to 2 years with AppleCare.
Peace of mind is what I was/am looking for, and my experience with Apple up until this incident, peace of mind is exactly what I felt when buying Apple products. It's hard to swallow being locked into another 2 year commitment, not to mention monthly fee being higher now as well, all with a unreliable phone.
A refurbished iPhone goes through more inspection and testing than a new iPhone does at the factory with no way to tell the difference between the two.
I guess it's a matter of principle to me. I don't appreciate being lied to. In regards to the exchange, I would have been more than fine with the refurb, but, they lied to me. This was confirmed to me, when I spoke the nice Apple support guy. He confirmed what I had read on these threads about refurb, and confirmed that the serial number starting with 5 means refurb. He is very nice and very helpful, and agreed that I should not have been mislead like that.
Thanks again for your help Allan. Really really appreciate it.

  • Can't get purchases off iPod onto new computer?

My old laptop crashed and I have recently replaced it. I have downloaded the iTunes software and now I'm trying to get the songs from my iPod to upload to iTunes so I can manage all my music. I have authorized my computer and some of the music has transferred, but I'm getting an error message which notifies me "Cannot transfer 100+ songs as you are not authorized to play them on this computer." Then it proceeds to give me instructions to authorize the computer. When I again attempt to authorize, it tells me the computer is already authorized. I have shut down, hoping this will solve the problem, but the same thing keeps occurring. Any ideas? I have no other working computers with any of this music. I want to load up some new music but if I sync at this point all my previous purchases will be lost.

try activating / Copying as Administrator (the 'real' admin)
or, if you dnt have ipod touch, enable use as External Volume, and then copy the music files/folders AS THEY ARE from X:\iPo_Control\Music (X: is the letter of yor iPod, may be differnent) into iTunes folder, and then import them; Itunes will arrange them correctly in file system

  • Power button on S3 unresponsive

On Monday evening, my power button became unresponsive to my S3.  My husband called Verizon, and they sent out a "reconditioned" S3 that was delivered today via FedEx.  Upon opening the package and booting up the new replacement, the message comes up on the screen that the SIM Card could not be detected.  My husband then takes his SIM card out of his S3, puts it in the "reconditioned" phone, and same error.  After receiving a phone from Verizon that is worthless, we decide to call to see if they can make this right.  After speaking to a few people, we finally get a manager on the phone, Nakisha.  This manager proceeded to give us the same run around as the other people, but taking up much more of our time by doing so.  It did not seem unreasonable or unrealistic for the huge conglomerate of Verizon Wireless to call a local store, and make this right.  I am leaving tomorrow for travel, and this has happened at the most inconvenient time.  After spending 1 1/2 hours on the phone, the only resolution offered to us is to get a 'loaner' phone, or wait for another "reconditioned" phone to be sent to us.  Why should we have to wait for another "reconditioned" phone, when the one we received today should have been in working condition?  I have had Verizon for 12 yrs, and my husband recently acquired my account in 2011, and they made a point to say the account does not note 10+ years of loyalty.  If Verizon is going to make a statement such as that, they should double check all records.  When Nakisha was not meeting our request, I asked to speak to someone else.  She then told me she was the only manager available.  I find that hard to believe.  I then asked how I could speak to someone in a higher position.  She then said she needs to make that request, and it would take 24-48 hrs.  So now, not only is Verizon NOT making things right with the customer, but also making the customer wait DAYS to speak to someone in a position that has more authority.  I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with the service received from Verizon this evening. When my contract is up, I am definitely going to switch providers, and I would advise everyone else to do the same.  The requests I made this evening were not unreasonable, and I am sure when I get this "special call" from someone in a higher position, the same run around will be given.  I have had many poor customer service experiences, but this most recent issue/interaction with Verizon tops the charts.

Had same problem..turns out it was the case! After a few days of no case..phone went back to normal. This isnt uncommon with s3s and cases. Of course verizon has no idea of this.

  • After 1 year earned leave should generate and pro-rata quota should generate next year on jan 1st.

    Hi Experts,
Here is the client requirement and please let me know how to solve this.
Earned Leave: after 1 year earned leave should generate and pro-rata quota should generate next year on jan 1st.
Example: if employee joins on 01/07/2012 after 1 year i.e 01/07/2013 quota should generate 22 days next year on 01/01/2014 pro-rata quota i.e 01/07/2013, 11 days pro-rata quota should generate. Total 22+11 =33 have to generate on 01/01/2014. and next year 01/01/2015 (22+11+22)=55.
    Note: on 1/7/2013 = 22 days
    on 1/1/2014 = 11 days +22 days; total=33
    on 1/1/2015 = 33 days +22 days; total=55
Conditions: if employee joins before 15th date of current month include the current month, if employee joins after 15th date exclude the current month.

You will need 2-3 PCRs to address this.
In one PCR you need to query the Date of Hire (from IT0041 - I guess you are maintaining this) using HRS=YDAYxx - where xx is the date type. You can then check it it is the first year anniversary or not by using HRS?01. If the condition satisfies populate a custom time type with 22 days.
In another PCR, you need to check for 01 Jan by using HRS=BCURMO and HRS=BCURDY. In this PCR check again the length of service (see above). If it is more than 1, then proceed to give the pro-rata amount.
If the pro-rata formula is simple you can use the second PCR or you would need a 3rd PCR to get the pro rata amount. Using HRS=Y**** operator you can query many date differences which will help.

  • Issues with images in Portfolio (Acrobat X Pro)

    Hi all,
I am having an issue with my portfolio file in Acrobat X Pro. I insert images from my hard drive, then proceed to give them display names and tags. This works fine, but then the next time I open the file, some of the pictures have become broken links. For those, the filename has been changed to the same as display name, even though I did not make that change. Once this happens, I seem to be left with no other choice than to reinsert the image and retag it and hope it doesn't happen again.
Has anyone else run into this issue? Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Thanks.
    - Adam

Java is a different animal than JavaScript.
PDFs use JavaScript and not the Java programing language.
As mentioned the apps on the iPxd, iPhone and android devices do not show the bookmark panel. The user needs to open the option that looks like an outline and the bookmarks appear like a table of contents for a book.
The show pages and bookmarks only works for full computer, laptops, and netbooks with the Acrobat or Reader programs or similar programs, not apps for tablets and phones.
Do you have a smart phone or tablet to test your PDFs on?

  • MacBook Pro burn DVD failed even after installing Leopard 10.5.2

Ever since upgrading from Tiger to Leopard my 17in MacBook Pro has failed to burn DVDs.
It managed to burn a couple discs after the upgrade, but soon proceeded to give various error messages whenever I have attempted to burn a DVD. The most common error is:
+Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (Error code 0x80020022)+
This is when using "Burn folders" to write large folders/files onto DVD (+3gig). It always fails about halfway through the disc, so if I write smaller folders it will often complete successfully. CD-Rs generally burn fine too.
I have tried various media and burning apps to no avail.
*I was hoping Leopard Update 10.5.2 would fix this issue, but alas it has not!*
Before I installed the update I had also unsuccessfully tried various solutions offered in this forum, such as resetting the PRAM and creating a new user account.
I would greatly appreciate anyone's insights, solutions or plan of action to resolve this issue. This is my first Mac (a rather expensive investment here in South Africa) and it has been awesome using it up until this point!

  • Transfering items from one customer to another customer

    Hi Gurus,
I have a requirement where we have to transfer the items from one customer to another customer in the same company code.
We should also be clearing the items from the old customer as part of the transfer.
Is there a way/transaction in ECC 6.0 to achieve this.
This is not a one-time transfer and the business would like the option of doing it every period (on a case to case basis.) so any standard SAP (transaction) way of doing it would be preferred.
    Best Regards

    Dear,
SAP provides you F-51 t code to post transaction with clearing.
Select radio button transfer posting with clearing and press choose open item button. Give customer name whose blance is to transferred and account key as D. Note 357375 - Settlement: AA613 for AuC intracompany transfer
There are two possibilities how to solve this problem:
    a. Define period control 02 with Transactions OA84 or OAVH.
    b. If you work with self-defined period controls, you can enter another period control instead of 02 in depreciation key 0000.
    Rgds.
