Do property updates and listeners have to be on the JavaFX thread?

Question

I understand that accessing the scene graph has to be done on the JavaFX thread. But do property setting, getting and listening for changes, and manipulation of observable lists have to be on that JavaFX thread too? I presume the answer is no.
For example if I have an ObservableList can I manipulate it in a program which doesn't use the scene graph at all, so basically using it just for it's event management?

The FX properties, bindings and collections have a potentially wide range of unexplored applications outside of JavaFX scene graph processing.

You can manipulate properties off the JavaFX thread if they are:
- properties you have defined yourself and the properties are not bound to anything that would affect a currently displayed scene graph or a property of anything in such a scene graph.
- properties of scene graphs which are not currently displayed.
