Do RMAN Backups Contain Remnants of Deleted Data?

Database: 11.1.0.6 SE1 on Windows Server 2003
Can someone please sanity-check me here?
I need to be able to delete data from one or more tables and then make a backup that contains absolutely no trace or remnant of what I deleted. Then, I need to re-install the database on a new disk and recover using the backup I just made.
My question is: if I use RMAN to make a full backup after taking the database out of archivelog mode and restarting, can I be sure that there is no trace of the deleted data in the backup?
I think the answer is "yes" because to make an actual copy of the data files I believe I would use "BACKUP AS COPY": this implies that not using "BACKUP AS COPY" is just backing up the necessary data and metadata about how to recreate the data files. But, I'm not sure, hence this posting.
Thanks!

Hello,
My question is: if I use RMAN to make a full backup after taking the database out of archivelog mode and restarting, can I be sure that there is no trace of the >deleted data in the backup?What do you mean by no trace of the deleted data ?
As you know, Oracle keeps (for a while) an image of your deleted data in the Undo Tablespace. And the
Undo data will be on the Backup.
To avoid writting on the Undo you may use the TRUNCATE statement instead of DELETE.
Hope this help.
Best regards,
Jean-Valentin

  • Date of execution of rMAN BACKUP

    Hi,
    can you explaine me please :
    I launched a RMAN backup job from OEM (9.2.0). When I verify the output I see date of 2005 :
    RMAN>
    connected to target database: OEADP (DBID=24391298)
    RMAN>
    connected to recovery catalog database
    RMAN>

    Starting backup at DEC 18 2005 00:00:02
    channel Channel1: starting incremental level 0 datafile backupset
    channel Channel1: specifying datafile(s) in backupset
    I'm astonnished. On OMS server and target machine system date is 12/14/2006.
    Any way the backup is not done and the job is failed but in output every thing is OK unless date :
    input datafile fno=00005 name=E:\ORADATA\OEADB\TOOLS01.DBF

    Many thanks.

    thank you. I have already checked. It is OK. I rediscovered the noad again. Now when I submit a job there is no output.

    I need to recover deleted data from my iPhone 4S but don't have a recent backup. I thought by pressing sync on my macbook this would back up…but I was wrong. There are no backups on my macbook and the latest backup on iCloud was Jan 2012. My mum died in May and I had lots of text messages that I wanted to keep. I really want to get them back. Is there any way at all I can get that deleted data from the phone?

    Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
    You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
    Let this be a very important lesson learned.

  • Create Data Guard Using ASM Managed RMAN backup

    we have an oracle database 11.1.0.7 working on Windows server 2003 (64bit). The storage in ASM managed (same 11.1.0.7). Our total database size is 4TB.
    I will have to create a physical standby database (Data Guard) of this instance. Now I am having issues on how to transport my RMAN backup pieces (which is also ASM managed).
    I cannot do an over the network RMAN backup because it will take months to complete.
    We have external 4 hard disks (2 TB each). But my RMAN backup pieces are ASM in format.
    Any ideas on how to easily create a data guard in this set up.

    TheAlchemist wrote:
    can you provide us any clear steps....Hope you asked for Restoring from backups.
    1) Prepare PFILE and put in nomount status.
    2) Restore standby controlfile
    RMAN> restore standby controlfile from '+DG/...'
    3) Mount controlfile
    SQL> alter database mount standby database;
    4) Restore database.
    If you are restoring into another diskgroups, then use as below.
    RUN {
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 1 TO '+Dg1/....';
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 2 TO "+Dg1/...';
    RESTORE DATABASE
    If same diskgroup you want to use then, just give RMAN> restore database;
    After successful restore
    5) Start MRP
    SQL> alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session;

  • Delete RMAN backup

    Oracle 11.2.0.1
    Windows
    I takes RMAN backup at D:\RMAN_BAKCUP of our test database. Now there is space problem, I have to allocate some space to other folder. I shall take cold backup of database by shutdown. How do I start to delete RMAN backup from above location. It is incremental backup. What precautions should be there while deleting RMAN backup with archive logs.
    Can I delete all archive logs too after consistent backup by shutting down the database ?
    I am facing space problem, thats why I though that I shall take cold backup of db and now no need of rman backup as well as archive logs. Am I correct ?
    Thanks.

    Thanks.Given what else I've read in this thread (test database, no need for point in time recovery, etc.) A 'cold' backup may be appropriate, but I'd still use rman to do it. I have a similar situation right now with one of my test databases. I took an rman cold backup (database is open MOUNT) with KEEP UNTIL 'SYSDATE + 60'. Once, sometimes twice, a day the developer asks for a restore to the backup. Piece of cake with rman, especially with a little script all ready to go. Would be a bit more difficult with a 'user managed' backup.

  • Deleting old rman backup

    Hi
    Let say I have a rman backup on Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday.
    Would it be possible to delete only monday`s backup from rman? Note that it is not obsolete.

    hi,
    how about this:
    delete backup completed before "19-FEB-2010";
    or
    delete backup completed between "17-FEB-2010" and "19-FEB-2010";
    Is it correct/helpful ?

  • Delete all AVAILABLE valid RMAN backup by RMAN command

    Hi
    We are taking RMAN full backup on disk every day. But right now we don’t have enough space on RMAN backup mount point. So we want to delete all AVAILABLE valid RMAN backup by RMAN command.
    Please guide to delete all AVAILABLE valid RMAN backup by RMAN command.
    -Thanks
    Edited by: Fazlul Kabir Mahfuz on May 13, 2013 11:06 AM

    You can do it by manually delete the backups and archivelogs from OS location. Then use below commands
    RMAN>crosscheck backup;
    It will give status as EXPIRED for backups which are valid but not available at OS level.
    RMAN>delete expired backup;
    Delete all the backups whose status are EXPIRED from database level.
    Similarly for archivelogs
    RMAN>crosscheck archivelog all;
    RMAN>delete expired archivelog all;

  • Rman backup to data protector

    We recently migrated from Tivoli to HP Data Protector.   All the RMAN scripts are stored in DP.
    Currently we don't have any control to stop or start the backup.  Every time we need to talk to storage team to get the things done (during maintenance activity)
    Is this the way it is operated where DP is used ?
    Is there any other way we can control the rman backup script execution ?   Is there any drawback if we run it directly from the shell/cron ?
    I was told that DP maintains its own recovery policy, due to which it has to be run from the DP.

    Not an Oracle error so you need to take this up with your other vendors.

    Maybe you may set retention policy to 1,
    RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1;
    End after taking a backup, you issue the following command so previous backup will be deleted:
    RMAN> DELETE OBSOLETE;

  • What's the exact trigger for when updating/inserting/deleting data from one DB to another DB which contains same info?

    Hi guys,
    I have created a copy of the AdventureWorks2012 DB called AdventureWorks2012_new on the same instance.
    I have created the following trigger below but my friend who is a DBA told me that this is not correct and I should be using the inserted table when creating this trigger. I would like AdventureWorks2012_new DB to be updating/inserting/deleting data from
    the same tables that have been updated/inserted/deleted in the AdventureWorks2012 DB. How exactly should I do this for all the tables in the whole database ? What I have written below is just for one of the tables, is there a quicker way to do it for all tables
    in this DB so that it performs the actions mentioned above, automatically ? Help would be greatly appreciated so I can understand how this works, thanks
    CREATE TRIGGER [HumanResources].[tr_HumanResources_AfterUpdate]
    ON [AdventureWorks2012].[HumanResources].[Department]
    AFTER UPDATE
    AS
    BEGIN
    SET NOCOUNT ON;
    UPDATE AdventureWorks2012_new.HumanResources.Department
    SET Name = t2.Name,
    GroupName = t2.GroupName,
    ModifiedDate = t2.ModifiedDate
    FROM AdventureWorks2012.HumanResources.Department AS t2
    INNER JOIN AdventureWorks2012_new.HumanResources.Department AS t1
    ON t2.DepartmentID = t1.DepartmentID
    END

    For insert it's easy:
    CREATE TRIGGER [HumanResources].[tr_HumanResources_AfterInsert]
    ON [AdventureWorks2012].[HumanResources].[Department]
    AFTER INSERT
    AS
    BEGIN
    SET NOCOUNT ON;
    Insert INTO AdventureWorks2012_new.HumanResources.Department
    (DepartmentID, Name, GroupName, ModifiedDate)
    SELECT DepartmentID, Name, GroupName, ModifiedDate
    FROM Inserted;
    END
    I didn't verify column names, so you may need to make sure to use correct column names for that table.
