Dock doesn't display international characters correctly

The language on my MBP is set to Swedish. Yesterday I noticed that the Dock replaces the letter "ö" in the Preview application ("Förhandsvisning") with a long line of backslashes (stretching over half the screen) and "U00f6". The only place where this problem appears is in the Dock, and only for Preview as far as I've seen. The "ä" in Downloads ("Hämtade filer") is displayed properly. Could this be an encoding issue related to the Dock or to Preview itself?
Seems like I was too quick posting, sorry. Removing the icon from Dock and restarting Preview resolved the problem. Restarting the computer did not.

I'm pretty sure you have to specify font and font map in vconsole.conf
like so:
FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
FONT_MAP=8859-2
If that doesn't help it could be this.
If so try to load settings manually, I can't test German setup, but for Polish I could do this to get national characters:
loadkeys pl
setfont Lat2-Terminus16 -m 8859-2
that requires to be root/sudo
note that -m 8859-2 part is quite important

actually got all German symbols to be displayed correctly, though I do not know if they are assigned for right keys for obvious reasons
loadkeys de-latin1-nodeadkeys
setfont Lat2-Terminus16 -m 8859-2

Everything works good except that my TTY can't display special characters. Example:

The is " not showing correctly at the bottom. However, the german umlaut ä works (as you can see).
I have already searched the arch forum. The only thing i have found is setting DAEMON_LOCALE="yes" in rc.conf. However, these post are already quite old and don't solve the my problem (as öäü are working). Additionally, Arch has stopped using rc.conf.
So, what causes this problem and how can i solve it?

JS Display international characters

I've recently posted a script that makes a font catalogue. One of the comments I got was if it could display international characters Russian for example. Would anyone have any suggestion as to how I might go about this? I've got a couple of changes I need to make to the script and it would be good to include this request as well.

Although your working sample displays three different scripts (Latin; Greek; Cyrillic), it's of No Importance At All. It's the different languages that count.
So for French and Italian, you would add:

You appear to think your myLetters variable ought to hold the allowable set of characters per language. Well ... no. Translating something does not (ever, if I'm correct) amount to transposing each character into another.
Take, for example, the Greek word for Greece. The alternative English name Hellas comes from Ελλάδα, but if you would somehow translate it one character at a time, you get "Ellada".
You should think of myLetters as a message instead. Suppose your script may display an alert
alert ("Bad input. You'll have to start all over again!");
then you can make a list for this message alone:

FCP X doesn't display iMovie clips correctly in Event Library

I have 10 years of clips that are setup by year/date in iMovie. Although I had imported most of the media in 2009, iMovie seems smart enough to read the actual file metadata and find the media recording date, which is prior to the import date. As a result, the clips are diplayed correctly in iMovie Event by Year/Month of actual recording.
However, the Event Library in FCP X doesn't do that at all and lists the events by "Content Creation" date, which is simply reads from the system file date, and NOT the recording date that is embedded into the file.
Bottom line is that Event Library is semi-useless as it doesn't all at display my clisp in the correct order, unlike iMovie that was doing it correctly.
Any ideas?

I went into Finder and discovered that FCP X created a directory structure where the files are in the correct Year/Month directory structure (as an exact mirror directory structure as the iMovie one), so it's even more weird that the Event Library doesn't display the events correctly???

Issue with displaying international characters returned by Search And Promote.

     I am trying to display international characters being returned by Search and Promote. The actual text returned by S&P is televisión, while the one being displayed is televisiÃ³n
I am usging r.get() to fetch values returned by S&P. The issue is only with data returned by S&P. Local international texts are being properly displayed.

Thanks Sham! Found the fix. I am checking for invalid characters in the byte stream and then applying corresponding encoding.
This method checks for invalid characters.

Onscreen keyboard doesn't display all characters in QWERTY mode in iOS7

Since installing iOS7, the onscreen keyboard has been sluggish. Tonight, all of a sudden, the onscreen keyboard doesn't display all characters on the keys in QWERTY mode - only the B, N, comma, and period keys show their characters on their key face. All of the other white keys are blank. When you press one of the blank keys, the character does display on the key face momentarily and does show in the text box that you are typing in. This only seems to occur in QWERTY mode. If you switch to QWERTZ or AZERTY software keyboard layouts, the keys do display their characters on their key face. If you split the keyboard in QWERTY mode the all keys display normally. This occurs in any application.
We've tried:
Turning off and turning off
Resetting by holding the sleep/wake and home button
Settings->General->Reset->Reset All Settings
Nothing has worked so far... Help!

Displaying International Characters

Some users have been concerned about the fact that Buzzword
does not display some international characters - ranging from Greek
to Russian. This is accentuated by the fact that we have Buzzword
users in well over 100 countries.
The problem occurs when users attempt to insert some
international characters - say, the Greek letter omega - and
Buzzword instead displays a dot on the screen. Here's what's going
on, for anyone interested:
Like virtually all modern software, Buzzword adheres to the
Unicode standard, where characters are defined with 16 bits,
resulting in a total of over 65,000 possible characters.
However, unlike most desktop software, Buzzword must use
something called "embedded fonts". This means that we can't read
fonts off a user's computer, but instead we have to download fonts
from our server.
This is where our challenge begins. A font family contains
characters - called "glyphs" when drawn on the screen - for some
portion of the 65,000 possible characters defined by Unicode. Each
available character is downloaded as a small program containing
instructions on how to draw the glyph. The instructions are
relatively small, but each takes time to download - you can see
evidence of this in our "loading fonts" progress bar.
For Buzzword to load relatively quickly, we need to limit the
number of characters downloaded with each of our seven font
families. Most people use far fewer than 65,000 characters, so for
our first phase of deployment, we identified a couple hundred
characters to download for each font family. Because our initial
market focus was North America, we chose characters from Latin-1,
the Western European character set.
The result: when a user attempts to enter the Greek letter
omega, Buzzword recognizes the Unicode character but does not have
the downloaded instructions to display the glyph on the screen. The
little dot that is displayed instead is an indication that the
requested glyph has not been downloaded with the font set.. If the
user were to export the document to be read by a desktop program,
the glyph would probably be displayed using the computer's fonts.
Longer term, we'll handle this differently by downloading
fonts dynamically, based on the document's contents and a user's
settings. In the meantime, we apologize to everyone who uses
characters outside the Western European set. We will work to get
you a solution as soon as we possibly can.

Firefox doesn't display all the characters in web pages...usually they are symbolic links to other web pages and display as a small black box with 4 numbers/characters inside the box.......

ITunes does not display Cyrillic characters correctly in Windows 7 Starter

I try to copy my songs from iTunes (9.0 running Mac OS X 10.6 Russian interface language) with tags containing Cyrillic characters (song name, artist, etc.) into iTunes 9.1 (russian interface) on netbook running Windows 7 Starter English. I do it via Home sharing option in iTunes.
Some songs with Russian titles displayed OK, but some of them display wrong characters (see attached screenshot).

Webpage not displaying certain characters correctly. Similar question already asked but not quite the same

I am using version 4.0.1 and it was a clean install after I reformatted my hard drive and did all the updates. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with a 3.0 Ghz CPU with Hyperthreading and 2 GB memory.
On this one particular website I belong to, where a colon is supposed to be, I get this little square box with the letters FF IR in it. I have the default settings for Western (ISO-8859-1) for the Default Character Encoding.
I've asked other members of that website and they have the same settings, but they see the colon and not the FF IR.
I will include a link for the site and I don't think you have to sign up to view it and I did a screen shot for both Mozilla/Firefox 4.0.1 and Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 but in Internet Explorer, where the colon is supposed to be there is just a little square.

I know you can't help with Microsoft programs and that is fine as I only used Internet Explorer for Microsoft Updates and to download Mozilla/Firefox.
Initially the responses from the site owner didn't have any problems on his end, but another person gave me some tips but they didn't work and then we found out that it is indeed supposed to be a colon.
I didn't have this problem with earlier versions, but when I had to reformat and reinstall everything, the only version I could download from Mozilla/Firefox was 4.0.1

I'm not sure what screen shot you are referring to, but if it is in your initial reply, before you typed the thing about''' "I do not seem to have a font to display" ''' But I see the FF IR and then the FF IR with quotation marks on each side.
Then pretty much of the whole page instead of having different characters for each font set, it shows several rows of FF IR.
I did notice the same problem today with a site I belong to that I take surveys for, the whole page was filled with FF IR
If the oxFFoo - oxFFFF block, I actually went to the search function for the page the link you included brings me too and neither of them showed up so I don't know what to do. I did earlier try to do a search for how to add the : font to my Unicode and the first thing that came up was "Basic Latin" Unicode Character 'COLON' (U+003A
Someone from the website I'm having the problem with told me something about UTF-8 encoding and gave me a link to check why Firefox doesn't detect UTF-8 encoding. I checked the fonts and under UTF, it starts with UTF-16 so I guess I have to figure a way to add UTF-8.

Flash chart doesn't display cyrillic characters

Please give me you advise to solve my problem...
I tried to write X-axis labels on 2D-column chart using Cyrillic characters.
If I set "Labels Rotation" to a value more than 0 chart does not display labels. If labels consists of Cyrillic and Latin characters then only Latin characters are displayed.
Please help me to resolve this issue.

That is possible.
The rotation functionality within html, if I understand it correctly, actually generates a graphic and rotates that rather than rotates the individual characters. It could be that this functionality just isn't designed for the characters you need.
This may be something you need to research on Adobe's website?

New iTunes update (10.6) not displaying asian characters correctly.

Just updated my iTunes to 10.6 and the new version is not displaying the asian characters in the artist or song titles. They are appearing in the album. Have restarted my computer multiple times.

Same issue going on for me. Like daskaea said, it doesn't show up in the album grid, but shows up fine everywhere else. I personally am encountering this issue for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean scripts.
Attempts to clear the name and re-enter it manually also do not work.
Anyone have any ideas?

[SOLVED] Conky Not Displaying Unicode Characters Correctly

I have some music that requires unicode characters in order to be displayed properly. The artist name is Röyksopp, but it is displayed like this:

Does anyone know how to either make it display correctly (Röyksopp), or at least remove the umlauts to make it almost correct(Royksopp)? I've set the locale, so it displays correctly in both i3bar and urxvt, but it had no effect on conky.

Itunes not displaying asian characters correctly

my song collection tags will display just fine when i'm just browsing files through finder.
however, when i import these songs to itunes, characters are all garbled up when it is in asian characters like korean and japanese..
is there a way to fix this?

Netscape using plugin doesn't display Japanese characters in a tree node

Hi,
I have a problem displaying a swing tree node name in Japanese. The problem only occurs on Netscape browsers. When I run the same applet with Internet Explorer, all the Japanese displays correctly. Now, with Netscape, the node name is displayed in little rectangle characters but the tooltip is displayed in Japanese. I don't believe I have any problem with the Java code because it works with IE.
I am using the java 1.3.1_01 plugin on a Windows NT machine that has a Japanese OS. I've also installed Japanese versions of Netscape. Also, Netscape is able to display my help files in Japanese correctly, so I am wondering if the problem is with the java plugin.
Any clues?

Found the problem. I set a font type of Arial. It's best to set the type to MS Gothic, or dont' set it at all so the system default font is used.
