Dock using an enormous amount of memory

I updated to 10.7.2 yesterday and now my Dock is starting to eat up huge amount of RAM - like 2 Gigs. I have to kill the process, but over time it still eats up memory. Rebooting doesn't seem to help.
Does anyone else have this problem? Anybody have an idea about a fix?
Bryan

There's another thread going on this.  Having this problem too  for me, Mail to an Exchange account appears to be the culpri for me.  Dock CPU & mem grows while Mail is open; drops when Mail is closed.  Deleted account & cached data then recreated it but problem came back.
Force quitting Dock frees memory but it starts to rise when Dock launches again. Left it running and Dock was using 30GB of VM.

  • After closing firefox, firefox still remains in memory with use of huge amount of memory

    Hello,
I'm now using 10.0.1 but the behavior started around version 7.x i believe and it's becoming bigger witch every update?.
    My configuration.
P4, 2.6 Ghz 512 MB memory, 120GB harddrive, Windows XP sp3 with all the updates.
While using firefox to explore the internet and using Scrapbook to save the pages that i want (Familytree search of our name in the past, present and..) firefox becomes terrible slow, hugh need of resources of swap memory up to 1,2 GB, i want to close firefox. After a 10 to 20 seconds firefox disappears from the screen but when i open (ctrl-alt-del) windows Taskmanager the process is still going on and often even needs more memory for several minutes (> 5) and i have to kill the process to go on. If i restart firefox after that it's treapears like the normal firefox but after a while the same thing happens again.
Sorry for the (perhaps) mistakes in my writing but englisch is not my native language.

Some activities may use quite a bit of memory, and if memory is low on the sytem Firefox is forced to page and slow down. Does the problem occur only when you do certain tasks or use a particular site. Does it only occur while you use "Scrapbook" - whatever that is, and have you tried using Firefox in its [[safe mode]]
There is a posibility that the problem is malware related.

  • Firefox 3.6.12 using an excessive amount of memory.

Recently replaced my hard drive after a crash, and discovered that my computer is processing very slowly. Looking at my running processes, I've found that Firefox is using between 130K and over 200K of memory, and the number tends to climb drastically before dropping a bit then climbing again. The plugin container seems to be the culprit, or at least part of the problem, since I'll often quit Firefox but it continues to run. I've disabled every plugin and addon I had (not many of either, and nothing esoteric), and it's still using over 140K of memory and slowing my computer.
Edited to add: Now that I've had FF running for a while, despite having all of my plugins and addons disabled, FF is using between 169K and 212K of memory.

    Please see the article at:

  • I regularly use Firefox and noticed lately that it is using a large amount of memory....sometimes up to 500 mb in a session. In addition, it's been slower and tends to hang up a lot. This occurred both before and after updating to the newest version.

I don't really know what else to detail. What would you like or need to know?

The issue does remain when I open the exported image in Photoshop.

  • Firefox 8 is using massive amounts of memory, currently 2 G with only a few tabs open.

I just upgraded to Firefox 8, but it is using such enormous amounts of memory that my computer has slowed to a crawl. According to Task Manager, memory usage is now down to 1.3G but still that's so much that it's hard to see what I'm typing. The previous versions of Firefox didn't use nearly so much. If this can't be fixed, I will have to use Google Chrome or IE even though I much prefer Firefox. Closing tabs in Firefox maxes out CPU usage, and this is a new computer with lots of memory. I think this is a bug. I don't want to have to go in and disable features that I have been using. Can you tell me when there will be a fix for this?

I'm running Firefox 8.0.1, no add-ons, no themes, no bells or whistles. Firefox takes up large amounts of my memory and brings my computer to a crawl. I'm well educated in A+ Network+ and Cisco CNA I am by far a very educated user and can not solve this problem myself.
I hate to say it, but Firefox is slipping in quality and I may have to switch to Opera if this problem can not be resolved. It's been an issue since v.5 and continues to be a pain.

  • AE uses huge amount of memory (computer low on memory error)

I'm not sure if its just me, but After Effects seems to use a huge amount of memory.
    I'm not doing anything fancy:
I have a b/w image (2478*774) which I opened in AE. I created a comp (25 frames) with the same dimensions of the image.
    On my timeline I have:
The image with one mask revealing the image from left to right.
A white solid with 4 masks (duplicated from the image). I use this layer only to create an edge on the part where the image will be revealed by its own mask.
According to my Windows Task Manager, AE starts out using 250k of RAM. But after working on my image as described above, after 20 / 30 minutes or so my AE uses about 9gb of RAM, showing a "Computer low on memory" error.
I can use "Purge > All Memory" and this will give me 20 minutes extra before running out of memory again.
Now I have upgraded from CS4 to CC just a few weeks ago and haven't used AE a lot since then, but somehow I do not believe this is normal behavior?
I am sure my memory isn't broken. I do a lot of heavy productions using 3D Studio Max without problems, and this problem never occurred to me on CS4.
I am working on Windows 7 with 16gb of RAM.
I have upgraded CC to the latest version (13,2).

    Here is the screenshot.
    I do have SP1 installed.

  • What is tuxedo9.1/bin/sql and how to restrict amount of memory it uses?

    Hi,
We have AIX 5.3 server running Oracle 10.2 database and Tuxedo, a few days ago the database crashed as
there was no free memory (this was configmed by AIX log).
According to our monitoring (Open View) memory was consumed by two 'sql' processes
(where 'sql' is process name): within one hour each process went from 24,000 to 800,000 memory pages.
I searched the box and found executable named 'sq' in tuxedo9.1/bin:
    ls -l tuxedo9.1/bin/sql-r-xr-xr-x 1 abcPadm abcP 73128 Oct 24 2008 tuxedo9.1/bin/sql
Would you be able to tell me what is this 'sql' executable and how to restrict amount
of memory it consumes (other than through ulimit)?
    Thanks
    Sev

    Hi Sev,
As Ian says, the SQL support in Tuxedo where Tuxedo actually provided a relational database resource manager has long been deprecated and certainly hasn't been supported in over 10 years. The Tuxedo sql program in the Tuxedo bin directory is an interactive SQL utility. I seriously doubt that it is the same executable that caused your memory problem. If it is the same executable, there isn't really much Oracle is going to be able to do for you as that component hasn't been supported for years. You would really need to change the application to use a standard supported SQL utility and relational database.

  • The amount of memory used for data is a lot larger than the saved file size why is this and can I get the memory usage down without splitting up the file?

I end up having to take a lot of high sample rate data for relativily long periods of time. When I save the data it is usually over 100 MB. When I load the data for post-processing though the amount of memory used is excessively higher than the file size. This causes my computer to crash because 1.5 GB is not enough. Is there a way to stop this from happening withoput splitting up the file into smaller files.

LabVIEW can efficiently handle large files, far beyond 100Mb, provided that care is taken in the coding of the loading/processing routines. Here are several suggestions:
    1) Check out the resources National Instruments has put together (NI Developer Zone > Development Library > Measurement and Automation Software > LabVIEW > Development System > Optimizing Applications > Managing Memory), specifically the article entitled "Managing Large Data Sets in LabVIEW".
    2) Load and process the data in chunks if possible.
    3) Avoid sending the data to front panel indicators, using local/global variables for data storage, or changing data types unless absolutely necessary.
    4) If using LabVIEW 7.1, use the "show buffer" tool to determine when LabVIEW is creating extra
    copies of data in memory.

  • HT3919 In the past was able to adjust the memory for each individual application, my Illustrator CS5 appears is doesn't have enough memory to complete a particular project. How do I boost the amount of memory that Illustrator uses so I can complete my pro

In the past I have always been able to adjust the memory of each individual application,
my Adobe Illustrator CS5 appears that is doesn't have enough memory to complete a particular project.
How do I boost the amount of memory that Illustrator uses so I can complete my project?

With OS X, it automatically allocates RAM and it can't be allocated manually.
What model Mac do you have and what OS X version is it running. Your profile shows a PowerMac and OS 10.6.8. A PowerMac can't run OS 10.6.8. It's max OS is 10.5.x
How much RAM is installed in your Mac? You need to max out the RAM and close other open apps if you are having problems with Illustrator.

  • Causes windows 7 desktop window manager (wdm.exe) to use large amounts of memory

Whenever I have Firefox4 open, it causes dwm.exe (Windows desktop manager) to use large amounts of RAM - It starts at about 100MB, quickly increasing to about 1GB over 20 seconds, then dropping back down to 100MB and so on. It does this continuously while Firefox4 is open, with the occasional "Your computer is running slow" message being shown by Windows.
Update: Only occurs when browser isn't on the primary display on a multi-monitor setup.

I had the exact same problem. DWM would use massive amount of memory when Firefox 4 was open on my secondary display, especially when scrolling with the mouse wheel. It would use so much that Windows 7 (8GB RAM) would turn off Aero. Going into Options>Advanced>General and unchecking "use hardware acceleration" fixed the issue. Of course now I can't take advantage of any hardware acceleration.

  • Crashing when rendering as well as using huge amounts of memory

When i try to render even small movies with basic effects (well photos i've put together into movies not even any videos) my computer crashes. When i go to task manager the memory usage during rendering is huge (even internet browsers with multiple tabs open don't go half that high) easily dwarfing everything else combined, and that's putting it lightly. It is also quite high even when not rendering but i think it's within expected levels for a program like this running on a home computer. I have tried running only adobe after effects and shutting down everything else that wasn't absolutely necessary but that still doesn't help. It doesn't crash immediately but renders for a few minutes and then my computer shuts down. The memory starts skyrocketing the second i hit render and continues to rapidly climb. Once it hits a certain point is when my compute shuts down. The reason i believe is the memory usage gets so high my computer is forced to shut down. I haven't used it in a while so i don't remember the exact amount of memory but im sure it was well over 10,000. It doesn't shut down slowly, my computer screen suddenly goes black and sometimes has trouble starting back up. My laptop is fairly new and pretty fast. i don't believe a super computer is necessary to run adobe after effects. Is there anything i can do to help after effects render successfully? I really don't want to buy a membership if i can't even use it. I could be completely wrong about the memory being the problem so please don't refrain from answering just because your solution has nothing to do with memory.

    Please use

On current situation, I’m also guess that this issue (above error message) may be caused by different language

Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.
    *[[Export bookmarks to Internet Explorer]]
You should not use old versions they are insecure. Security fixes are publicised and exploitable.
    * [[Install an older version of Firefox]]
    * https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox.html
Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

Trying safe mode takes seconds. Unfortunatly if you are not willing to do even rudimentary troubleshooting there is not anything we can do to help you.

  • My firefox uses a very large amount of memory, 1.9 Gigabyte to be exact. I do have about 30 tabs opened, but i still don't think this is normal behavior.

I have around 30 tabs opened. Firefox is using 1.9 Gigabytes of memory according to windows task manager. This is slowing down browsing as well as my computer in general. Text entry is also slow within the browser. I am using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit OS. I have an AMD Phenom 9850 Quad core 2.5 Ghz with 8GB memory. Computer is very advanced and modern, should be lightning fast but slows way down when using firefox, no doubt from the 1.9Gb memory being used. Browsing is slow and sluggish as is switching between tabs and other general computing tasks.

i've never overvolted my memory sticks
    DRAM frequency is auto
    my DRAM voltage is auto
    and timing is auto
    my programs doesnt crash
i think it might be timings.. cuz i checked voltage from various programs and it seem okay
and when i undervolt it(just a little bit).. programs crashes

infact the problem is not that if its seen or not.. its like..
i recently boot up and it seem i can only access 1 dimm of memory
