Dock won't magnify

my dock randomly stopped magnifying. it's set to magnify. i turned mag off then back on. i turned hiding on and then off. i rebooted. i logged out and back in. i uninstalled app enhancer (i had ClearDock installed bu tnot running). still nothing. i repaired permissions. i unplugged my USB mouse. still nothing. all of the other dock functions are fine-- i can open apps; i can resize it. just no magnification. what gives?

I have the same problem occasionally. The dock just "freezes" in place. You can still click on it to open stuff but the auto-hide/show stops working and the magnification stops. I found an easy way to fix it though when this happens.
I created an applescript, an extremely simple applescript:
tell application "Dock"
     quit
end tell
Saved it as an executable, changed the icon of it to the "Dock.app" icon to make it look pretty, and then placed it in the dock. Anytime the dock "freezes", click on it, the script will quit the dock and the finder will automatically relaunch a working dock instantly.

  • Dock won't magnify after 10.4.4 update

Just did the update to 10.4.4 and now the dock won't magnify when I move the mouse over the various applications. When I click one it magnifies it and stays magnified till I click into another application.
I also noticed that in Mail.app when you hovered over an address in an email you'd received it had a kind of blue highlight box. That doesn't appear any more either.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Nothing out of the ordinary but the problem is fixed.
I downloaded the combo update and then decided I'd go back to 10.4 and update from there. However, it wouldn't let me do an archive and install and told me the software couldn't be installed.
So I took out Diskwarrior to clean things up and that wouldn't work either. It kept freezing when 'locating directory info' or something similar.
So I decided I'd start back up again and have a look around on the web to see if I could find any answers to that and lo and behold everything is working perfectly again.
    Most strange.

  • Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder, Pages App. Recently sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) after iOS5 installed.

Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Already have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder/Pages App./selected file. Prob not noted until recently after sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) when I installed iOS5. Anyone-- please?!

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

  • Macbook pro.minimize button is inactive. Finder menu bar and dock won't appear when firefox is open. not occuring with safari. have to click on desktop to get Finder menu bar and dock to reappear. think happens after update of something. How do I fix it?

When i open firefox it opens up full screen (as it always has) but now the minimize button is grey (not yellow) and inactive so i can only open (green button) or close (red button) my firefox window. I can still make it smaller by dragging the bottom right corner but i can't minimize it to my dock or anything. Also, I have my dock set to auto show/hide when i roll my pointer over it. Now, whenever Firefox is open (no matter what size the window is) the Finder menu bar (with the time, battery power, etc) does not show up (which it always has before) and my dock won't auto appear when i roll my pointer over it.

Can you check this issue on Firefox 9?

  • If external monitor is placed above laptop screen, dock won't appear on external monitor

I've just migrated from PC to Mac and I've found something that drives me crazy.  The dock won't appear on my external monitor if the external monitor is placed directly above the MacBook Air built in display.  At home. I plug in my external monitor into my MacBook Air, place my laptop on my physical desktop just below my elevated external monitor.  My MacBook Air is open and I use its keyboard and its display, but my main display is my external monitor. I configured displays to match the physical arrangement:
Darn:  the DOCK REFUSES to appear on the "main screen"!!  This drives me crazy -- this did not happen in Windows!  The task bar obeyed my "main display" setting.
I can get the dock to appear on the main screen if I tell Mavericks of an arrangement that suits Mavericks -- somewhat side-by-side, as follows:
Now the dock shows up on my external monitor which I'd identified as my main screen before all these shenanigans.
The problem with the workaround is that the mouse does not track correctly between monitors so it's not an acceptable workaround.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to work around this for real?

Try booting your laptop normally, and then plug in the external monitor when the computer has fully logged in (or when it's waiting at the login screen). Does the problem still happen when you do that?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • 20gb iPod dock won't update podcasts, playlists with iTunes 7.02

My 20gb ipod with dock won't sync properly with iTunes 7. Not all of the podcasts will transfer from itunes to my ipod and my playlist with podcasts can't be updated. Any ideas what might be happening? It only started when I updated to iTunes 7.02
imac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I think the problem is more of a corrupted library data file than the actual program. Ok, so the update/grade to 7.0.X problaby caused the corruption, but after starting over with a new iTunes Library (data, not XML) file, everything seems to be working fine with 7.0.2. My whole story is below:
Ok after my early elation of having my ipods up and running (and not useless pieces of expensive junk), I ran into more problems when trying to sync. It seemed like the ipod was locking up and when I tried to eject, then iTunes would lock up. I tried with my current 7.0.2 version. I rolled back to 6.0.5. I could add some music without any problems, except that I lost all my playlists since I had to start with a fresh library. So I tried to use my most recent library file (obviously that didn't work since it was in a newer version format). So I went back to my last 6.0 library (in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder). That's when all the frustration started. My iPod kept locking up (meaning an erase (sometimes with zeroing out data - a 2 hour process!), restore, update, and crossing of fingers). I tried this process with several different iTunes libraries under 6.0.5 and the result was always the same: a lot of cussing on my part. So I figured, what the heck lets try going back to 7.0.2, it can't get any worse than it is right now, I mean broken is broken, regardless of the iTunes version. I tried the sync manually, no playlists, fresh version of iTunes library, fresh iPod (erased & restored). Those songs transferred ok and speedily. So I tried more songs and then the entire library (still no playlists). That worked well. So then I tried adding a playlist. It worked too. More playlists, still working. The only thing that I haven't done is: updating podcasts, and I stopped the "download artwork" process (kind of pointless on a monochrome iPod).
Hope my story helps. Other than the extremely irritating loss of time (and the new, colorful vocab my 2 year old has), the loss of my playlists isn't too major: they needed a reorg anyway. But for serious iPoders (DJ's, Nike+ users, etc.) this loss could be a very big deal.
Apple should have tested more thoroughly. Their haste to counteract the fair share hack, has caused more problems with the majority of legal users, than it solved with the minority of hackers.

  • My dock won't work anymore!

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion on my iMac and now my dock won't work.  I scroll over the dock and then my screen flickers and I can't click on any of the icons in the dock.  Please help!

Reboot into Safe Mode and see if the problem persists. If it does you should reinstall ML.

  • Mom used comp....and now the dock won't appear

    Hi,
My mom used my scanner/printer recently and when I went onto my comp to use it there was a dialogue box that I couldn't click out of so I restarted it and now the dock won't appear when I hover at the bottom of the screen.
I had a similar problem this summer when I turned of the comp and moved it into another room to find that my desktop wallpaper had disapeared and I still havn't been able to reload it.
Can someone help me figure out what's wrong? Thanks in advance

My dock won't pop out like it should. It has popped out for years. When I turn off "hide" it is there and works fine. Does anyone have any ideas of what happened and how to fix it?

    Try this...
Go to /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences and delete these 2 files /com.apple.dock.plist
    and com.apple.dock.db.plist
Then restart. This will give you the default Dock, so you'll have to reset yours the way you like it)

  • Dock won't hide/show after Tiger security update

I installed the Dec 27 Tiger security update last night (via SW update) and now the dock is behaving badly. I had it set to automatically show/hide, but it would not show anymore after the update. I always install sec updates, so I did also do the previous one without any problems.
So far I've done this to try to solve the problem:
    - I changed the settings to turn hiding off and the doc appears and works correctly in that mode. The only problem with it seems to be that it won't show after it hides with hiding turned on.
    - I repaired permissions
    - I shut down and restarted
    - I did a safe-mode restart and a regular restart
    - I trashed my doc preferences, restarted, and recreated the configuration of items I like.
    - I tried removing the preference called /Library/Preferences/com.apple.dockfixup.plist which had no effect, so I put it back. (It's dated 2006 but I have no further info about it.)
Also, oddly, it seems that my system menus are strictly pull-down now. I am almost sure they had some drop-down behavior before, because I keep clicking on main menu items expecting the submenu to persist, and it doesn't. If I'm not imagining this, perhaps the two issues are related?
I don't have any system mods or Finder replacement apps.
Are there any other dock-related files that I could replace from my backup to try to fix this issue?
Did the update do something specifically to change the dock?
I really hate to reinstall and reupdate from scratch to fix such a minor problem, but it is 100% annoying. Ideas and commiseration welcome.

Thank you. I didn't know you could remove the whole folder without wreaking havoc. I will try another user account for thoroughness.
    New info:
I discovered this morning that both of these problems do not occur with my Contour mouse, only with the Logitech trackball. The trackball has a brand new problem at startup today, which is that it acts like it's constantly right-button-down. It selects only.
So perhaps its a driver or mouse hardware issue. I think it's suspicious that it started immediately after the update, but since the trackball did not come with a driver, I am not sure I can further troubleshoot it myself. I'll dig around in the system and on the net a bit to see, but I'm probably going to buy another pointing device in order to resolve this. The trackball is only about 2 months old, but maybe it's filled up with cat hair. ... There's a joke in there somewhere.

  • This dock won't dock on one side

The Grinch has taken away my tree: this morning my dock will not dock on the right where it usually resides. It's fine on the bottom and left. I've trashed the com.apple.dock.plist and it still won't show with or without hiding.
Not a big deal but any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
How about deleting the com.apple.preference.displays.000a9597ad54.plist ? (Note: Your plist file may have a different number/letter combination)
I am not familiar with PowerBook displays, but can you explore the possibility of changing the System Preferences...>Displays>Display>Resolutions:?

  • Dock won't show up...Can't click anything

I have a 2006 Macbook running Snow Leopard. Just last week my computer booted up to the desktop. All my icons loaded up but the background picture did not and the dock didn't load up. I can click on things but I can't open any files. I can go through my HD and look at files, but if I try to open them, and error pops up. Also after I click anything, the computer goes blue and then after a second it goes back to the normal desktop view. I don't know what to do or what the problem is. Computer was running great up until this point. Any idea the problem?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left handlist. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive has physical problems

  • Dock won't show

I have my dock on the "hide" setting, and when i scroll to the bottom of the screen, it jumps up. However, occasionally (and I think it might be related to the uptime of the computer - it might be getting tired) it just won't come up. Suddenly, I will try to access a program from the dock and in vain scroll down multiple times. I'm wondering what the problem is here - it resolves itself after I restart the computer. Is it a bug? Is there something I could do about it? It's simply annoying. A similar thing happens to my Dashboard also, at the same time. I hit the button I've programmed for it, and it won't come up.

    Hi,
Have the same problem every once in a while on school computers. It seems to happen when switching from classic applications back to os x ones.
    Try throwing aeay the
    com.apple.dashboard.plist
in the preference folder and see if that cures it.
    luck
