Docx word icon not present

I have Office Pro 2010 installed yet none of my word documents created in 2010 appear as word docs in my files they appear as DOCX (a sort of blank icon) and it keeps asking me which programme I want to open it with
I select word naturally. How do I get all my docs
in my files to appear with the word icon?
If I want the word icon to appear I have to save the doc as Office 93 - 2003 doc which is silly.
I hope someone can help me
Thanks
Chris

Hi,
Please take a try with the suggestions offered by tony4554 :
QUOTED:
After many hours of research, installs, uninstalls, reinstalls, repairs, reregistering word etc. etc. I was able to add the Word 97 and 2003 right click menu option by just adding a NullFile string to the “Word.Document.8” key under the
.doc key in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc but it would not do anything under the .docx key.
I wanted the 2010 docx of office 2010 functionality.
I have found out what I had to do to get back the Right-click New Microsoft Word Document function of Office 2010 in Windows Explorer and on the Desktop.
I found that four keys were missing in the registry in comparison with my other computer’s installation of Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010.
Remember to back up the .docx key by exporting it to a safe folder so that you could have it if necessary.
I opened the registry to – HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.docx
Steps creating keys are done on the left window pane in the registry.
1)     Below the .docx key I create the first key that was missing by right clicking on the “.docx” key then go down to New, then left click on Key and name it “OpenWithList” without the quotes.
Inside of that key is the automatically created String Value (default)  REG_SZ
  (value not set)
2)     Inside of the “OpenWithList” create the second key. Right click on the “OpenWithList” key then go down to New, then left click on Key and name this new key “WordPad.exe”
without the quotes.
Inside of that key is the automatically created String Value (default)  REG_SZ
  (value not set)
3)     Right click on the “.docx” key then go down to New, then left click on Key to create the third key and name it “Word.Document.12” without the quotes.
Inside of that key is the automatically created String Value (default)  REG_SZ
  (value not set)
4)     Right click on the “Word.Document.12” key then go down to New, then left click on Key to create the fourth key and name it “ShellNew” without the quotes.
Inside of that key is the automatically created String Value (default)  REG_SZ
  (value not set)
The next thing to do is to create a string value newly created “ShellNew” key but this is done in the window on the right side.
5)     Left click on ShellNew in the left window to select the key. Now in the window on the right side; Right click in the empty space go to New then select String Value. Name
the new string  “NullFile” without the quotes, Type is REG_SZ Leave the data empty.
6)     Lastly, in the left window left click on key .docx, In the right side window make sure that the data of the (Default) string is Word.Document.12 – To change it, doubleclick
on the string named (Default) , a window will open up and you change the data value to Word.Document.12 (My data value was “docx_auto_file”)
You are done. Close the registry.  Test the right click context menu now.

Hope this may help

  • Time Machine icon not present

Just pick up a My Book 500G external hard drive and discovered that time machine icon is not present in the system preference folder. My computer's name is using proper characters under the sharing folder???

In the Finder Preferences set what folder you want new Finder windows to open to:
That should set the Finder icon in the Dock to open to the window you want.
As for the closed side pane, in a Finder window with the side pane showing bring up the View options and click on the Use as Default button:

  • Air play icon not present

When I open the music app to listen to my itunes library, the airplay icon is not present, yet if I open the Songza app. it is available and works just fine.
Why is it showing in a third party app and not apples own music app? I have an ipone 4s running iOS7.0.4, and my apple tv has the latest software as well
(Airplay is also present in itunes on my macbook laptop.....)

AsI tried to explain in the original post, the icon is there and works just fine in the Songza app on the same device, my iphone. It is not present in the music app.

  • Why is the Ken Burns icon not present with the crop option on imovie10

I do not have a tab labeled Ken Burns after I enter the crop mode with imovie10.

The Ken Burns and other options will show up when you have a project defined and select a clip in the "timeline" of the project.

  • Docx file association is set up correctly but does not display Word icon when viewing in Explorer

Problem with MS Word as part of MS Office 2007 Professional Plus running on Windows 7.
When I view a folder in Windows Explorer all docx files show up with a plain white icon, not a Word icon. I have done the following:
Start > Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
Then scrolled down the display and selected the docx extension - it already shows as Microsoft Office Word - clicked on Change Program, reset the program to WordPad, then back in the display clicked on the Change Program icon again. This tiime I reset it
    to Microsoft Office Word.
However when I go back into Explorer the icon has not changed. Even if I close it down and restart it again. And even after a reboot.
Also, I have checked the individual properties of the docs files, using Explorer, and they do say Open With Microsoft Word. So no problem there either.
Any suggestions welcome as to how to change it so the icon displayed is Word not blank.

    Hi orchestrand,
I have the same problem as you and after searching for a day for a definitive solution, i have found this one that works on another forum located here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html
The reason seems to be that icons stored have for some reason disappeared (inexplicably?). The solution is also stupidly simple after i've tried every suggestion in this thread.
    1) go to start menu and search for: cmd
    2) right click on cmd and choose "run as administrator" (--> this causes command line to change from C:\users\<account name> to change to: C:\windows\system32).
    3) turn off everything you are doing after saving your work because now you will be closing explorer.exe
    4) in the command line enter each command separately and with enter following each line
    taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
    CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    DEL IconCache.db /a
    shutdown /r
    5) after the restart, everything should be back to normal.
This is a complete fix for the problem and not a work around and I can verify that it worked for me. Good luck all.
also, this is a repost, but i think we have the same problem

Step one is to log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists.

I'm having a problem sending a word doc via email. I have Mac for Office 08, and I'm using Mavericks OS. When I save the document as a .doc or .docx, and send it to someone, (doesn't matter if its safari, chrome or firefox or on my yahoo or gmail accounts) they receive it as a blank document. Yet, when I open it on my Mac, it has a "word" icon and I can read it. How do I fix?

I suggest you post on the Microsoft Mac forums since it's their software you're having issues with.

Drag the Word icon back to where it belongs.
Applications > Microsoft Office 2011 > Put Word there.
I'm assuming you have Office 2011. If you have 2008 there should be a similar location to put Word.

You are supposed to be able to set up an account without a credit card. See HT2534 - Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, and Mac App Store account without a credit card.
If you've already created the Apple ID that you want to use and are now being asked for a credit card try the method given here. If you use this I'd be interested to know how you get on because I haven't yet had the time to try it myself.

  • Satellite A200 - Touchpad vertical scrolling not present

I have just installed Windows 7 in my Toshiba A200 and downloaded drivers for the touch pad from Toshiba's site.
However, the option related to enabling vertical scrolling is not present in the settings.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    I have a similar problem.
I just installed win 7 on my A200 Sat Pro.
Now the touchpad icon appears in the Sys tray, but when I try to access the Synaptics buttons - tapping etc,
all that is displayed in thee revelant page is button functions.
In other words I cannot disable the tapping function - nor access the scrolling functions etc.
Also, in device management - the TP shows up as a pointing device on ps/2 port 2 or something.
I originally got this A200 model as an XP model - with alot of bells and whistles from Toshiba - fancy wireless detectors etc.
All that software and the drivers comes on a factory reset DVD that re-installs xp.
However - the factory DVD is unexplorable (its propriety compressed) for specific drivers ie the original touchpad driver which I am presuming is the mysterious Alps driver.
I have downloaded and tried all of synaptics drivers.
I have downloaded and tried all of the touchpad drivers referenced in the model specific search engine on this site for the A200 model - which incidentally doesnt turn up the mysterious Alps driver.
After reading this thread - I have scoured on the manual search through pages of ALPs drivers for a reliable reference to the A200 model>
Oh, and I almost forgot, I downloaded and installed and ran the Toshiba Win 7 driver update software. This was the first thing I did.
    @MasterG
I'm now wondering if an Alps driver referenced to the L500 series - as you mention, might solve the problem.
So - I'm going to look for that now and try it.
    Regards
    Austosh.

  • Firefox is not opening and is NOT present in task manager

With no apparent reason FF is not opening and is not present in Win Task Manager. I tried to reinstal, reset registry and other common solutions but none of them changed anything. After doubleclick on an icon nothing happens... and thats all.

For some reason it is ok now after I've installed FF 3.0.6 and then made an update to 3.6.

I tried to use the attached command through TERMINAL :
    sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db "DELETE from apps WHERE title='Help';" && killall Dock
sqlite3: Error: too many options: "DELETE from apps WHERE title='Help';"
Use -help for a list of options.

I'm in the same boat as you -- except that I manage both a school lab (volunteer job) and macs in the enterprise (pay job).  What I think we need is the Education Volume Purchasing Program
    http://www.apple.com/education/volume-purchase-program/faq.html
Unfortunately this all seems a little rough around the edges -- for example, I have found updates for AppStore apps on the support.apple.com updates download site, but then when I install them via ARD they don't actually update the software.  (The AppStore icons still show as needing the updates, and the version info reports the old version.)  The documentation is also vague about which AppleID to use in which circumstance.  I think they just haven't finished thinking through the implications of the various procedures and policies upon the various kinds of customers.  When we deployed Mountain Lion on the school lab, we made an install usb and went around and installed it on each computer -- and it appears that you are on the honor system as far as paying for all of the licenses that you install.  We did!  But they appear to have no way to enforce it.
So far, I have only deployed 9 Lion macs in my day job, and our "solution" to the AppStore showing updates problem has been to drag the AppStore icon off of the users' docks so they don't see them!

  • I can't open .doc downloads with MS Office. I click tools-options-applications and Word is not in the list of choices. I browse and double click MS Office to choose it only to get more subfolders. How do I choose Office?

When I receive a .doc (or .docx) to download from an email, open office or another similar application is chosen to open it instead of MS Office Word (have 2007 student). When I go to Tools>Options>Applications, Word does not appear on the list. When I use the Browse button, I cannot choose Word either. I double click on the MS Office folder only to get more subfolders.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I think it's always been the case

I have a similar problem. Even though Word is listed under Firefox applications as opening .doc files, when I try to download a .doc file, it always asks me to choose an application and I have to go through an extra three steps to open Word.

    Hi All,
I have a problem when i open report in MS Word document.

1-> Log on BI Publisher menu in Ms Word
    Given User Name/Pwd
2-> Then open temp window will open
3-> In that window i selected my report Layout and click on open Report option.
Then i am getting prob that Ms Word is not respond(Task Manager)
If Anyone knows do me the help.
    Regards...

The version of MS Word 2008. I don't use the application from a remote server or over a network.
If I open and close Word without doing anything, it pauses for a few seconds and then quits fine. But if I use it, i.e. write a document or just leave it running for a bit, when I right-click on the icon to close it it says 'Application Not Responding' and my only option is to force quit. If I use command-q, it will say there was some sort of error and the application had to close. Then the error report window pops up.

  • I can no longer open any doc attachments. This was never a problem before. Also the W for Word is not an option in the chooser application drop-down list.

At one point, all my Word icons turned to Microsoft orange icons. I resolved that issue by uninstalling Microsoft Office 2010 and not the starter. I have NEVER had a problem opening doc email attachments I have received. This is a new issue. I used to just double-click on the attachment icon and it opened. Now it gives me nothing. I can't seem to find Microsoft Word as a choice in the drop-down box either. I also tried selecting Microsoft virtual whatever it was, as was suggested in Google, but that did nothing either. I just want to go back to being able to double-click on my attachments and having them pop open. What went wrong in computerland?

Actually, I solved it myself by compacting my inbox. Yes, it was Thunderbird. All my docs can now be opened. Word starter came with my computer already installed. Never had any trouble in two years until recently. I can now pick Microsoft Word virtual handler and it opens it. I still don't know what happened to the Word icon in the drop down box. Maybe it was never there to begin with, because I NEVER had to pick anything to open an attachment before. I just double-clicked on it and it opened.
