Does apple tv need wifi

Hi I am considering buying an apple TV but i need to know first if you will need a wifi connection in order for to work with airplay or if it will work at all.

will it need a connection even for airplay?
yes, airplay connections are made over your network
also can it be a network connection that was set up from my computer without the internet?
internet is not required, just a local network. both devices need to be connected to the network (iphone and appletv, and they need to be able to see each other).

Apple sells AirPort base stations which provide WiFi access, but you need an ISP or to use a place with public WiFi access to connect to the Internet.

You have to do it on the Apple TV itself while it's plugged into a TV so that you can see its screen.
    I quote
How to update software on your Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation)
Learn how to update the software on your Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation). It's always a good idea to have the latest software on your Apple TV.
    Update your software
Select Settings > General > Update Software. Apple TV checks for an available update; if one is available, a download message should appear.
Click Download and Install to start the download process.
Do not disconnect your Apple TV during the update process. The Apple TV status light may flash slowly during the update and restart process. This is expected behavior.

  • Why does my iphone need wifi to update

Why does my iphone need wifi to download and install new software update!?
While other iphones can do that with their cellular internet

This is your phone's operating temp range:
    Operating ambient temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
You exceed that range & you'll get that warning...you do nothing, & your phone will shut down to prevent damage. Easy to exceed that range while your phone is navigating & exposed to sun or another heat source.
    It is what it is.

  • Does Apple TV need Internet bandwidth even if the content is available on LAN?

    Hi,
I was wondering whether Apple TV needs Internet connection just to verify user credentials or it actually uses bandwidth to stream media even if the videos are available locally on a storage device.
I am using an Apple TV 2nd Generation connected to a HD TV. I use Air Video Server to stream videos from a laptop connected to the same LAN.
Even though both devices are connected to a LAN I see usage of Internet bandwidth on my Telstra account.
can someone explain to me why ATV needs Internet to stream local videos?
    Regards,
    Kiran

I noticed the same problem with my ATV2. I have a laptop connected to a router at my cottage and it is not connected to the internet. As soon as i upgraded to 6.0 it took forever to stream movie that were in itunes. I tried both wirelessly and wired. I even bought a different brand of router and that made no difference. It worked fine before the update. When I brought the router home and connected it to the internet, it was instanteneous, but when disconnected it slowed to being unusable. I think that something changed in V 6.0 and it hasn't been corrected yet becuase I just updated to the latest version and it made no difference.

  • Does apple mail need to be re-configured?

Suddenly my mail program on my macbook pro won't work with my time-warner  Time warner says I have to change my preferences in mail

I am desiring this same type of solution. I just want to be able to stream photos or video from my laptop directly to an Apple TV connected to an HDTV or LCD projector. It seems like it should be possible to create an AdHoc network on the laptop that the AppleTV could connect to but that doesn't seem to be the case.
When I create the network on my MacBook pro, the AppleTV cannot see it thus cannot connect to it.
Very limiting and I wish I could find an alternative that would work.

  • Does apple ID need to be linked to a credit card to use the itunes prepaid card?

I need help with this issue please

I tried to take my credit card off last night since I will have money on my iTunes prepaid account and it takes it from my credit card instead. This happened to me last week and not the 1st time but doesn't happen very often. I had 2 cards I wanted to put the codes in and it finally took them, apparently last night there was a problem for most people to get their cards to be accepted including me, but at the bottom of the App Store or iTunes Store where you can see your balance they didn't show. I wondered the same thing as you and entered my regular credit info again and all of a sudden my total changed and showed my prepaid card amount correctly. Now I don't know if this has to do with having to have a regular credit card on file or redeeming the cards was slow last night but it did seem to me to be related to having my card on file. I am sure some one will know a definite answer to this.

  • Apple TV needs Restart for Airplay especially after resuming from Sleep Mode

    1. I always have to restart my Apple TV for Airplay when I resume it from Sleep Mode. Neither my MAC not my PC nor my iPhone/iPad can connect to Airplay if it's not retsarted. I did a complete Factory Reset of Apple TV thinking it would be the best way of troubleshooting but in vein. Any help/suggestion/tips from anybody please?
    2. Also - Does Apple TV needs internet always for Airplay? I guess that should work on the LAN even if there is no internet connectivity, Correct?

  • Does the ipod touch itself need wifi in order to use find my iphone??

My ipod touch 4g got stolen and i have find my iphone turned on but my question is does the ipod itself need wifi to track it down??  I've tried so many times i played sound, i have a passcode lock on it, i even sent a message to my ipod... But i try to locate it, it says it's offline.it down?? if so there's no way to point to try to find it Right??

Change your iTunes (Apple ID) password along with any other password that was stored in the iPod.  If any passwords are associated with credit cards, contact the CC company and get your card replaced (with a new number).  If any passwords are associated with a bank or any other savings institution, contact them also and discuss approprate action with them.
The "Find my..." function is pretty much useless if the device is in the hands of a thief.  All that is necessary is for the thief to connect to any computer with iTunes and "Restore as new."
The only real protection you have is with the personal information on the device rather than the physical device itself.  This requires action before the device is lost/stolen.  If the device has significant personal information, it should have a strong 8-digit (or longer) password AND be configured for automatic wipe in the event of ten consecutive incorrect password entries.

  • HT204053 Should a family share an apple id, or does each phone need its own apple id?

Should a family share an apple id, or does each phone need its own apple id?

    Hello coachscott,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
Frequently asked questions about Apple ID

Can I share my Apple ID with someone else?
You shouldn't share your Apple ID account information with other people. Each person should have their own Apple ID.
    Best of luck,

  • Hi. My husband and I have always shared the same iTunes account.  Since installing iCloud, all our contacts and calenders have merged on our iPhone 4, which we do not want.  How do I rectify this? Does my husband need to set up his own apple ID?

Hi. My husband and I have always shared the same iTunes account.  Since installing iCloud, all our contacts and calenders have merged on our iPhone 4, which we do not want.  How do I rectify this? Does my husband need to set up his own apple ID?  If so, where do I need to change his email address info, so that his calender and contacts remain his?  Thank you

You can continue to use the current AppleID for iTunes, but your husband can create a new AppleID to use to create a new iCloud account that will be his own and not overlap with yours.  If you do not have another email address to use for an AppleID, just get a free Gmail account and use that.
You can have as many AppleIDs as you want (or at least, as many as you have email addresses for).  You can use a separate AppleID for the store, another for iCloud, and even another for iMessage if you wish.
You will want to keep the current one as the shared one for the store as all your previous purchases are permanently tied to it, and thus you need that AppleID to update or redownload your current purchased content.

  • What's going on with ios8... Screen rotate does not work anymore, wifi doesn't work very well anymore and apps are crashing or running slow... Come on Apple sort this mess out

ssince I updated my iPhone 5s to ios8 ive had nothing but problems...
first the the screen rotation is not working... Checked the settings and  lock is off.... The wifi is intermittent, some times it works sometimes it doesn't....
the he iPhone is really slow now, like really labouring.... It hangs and crashes all the time.... I have to close apps down completely because they won't work from quick launch anymore.... Even writing this the phone is labouring.... It's like my old 48k spectrum.... I don't expect this from Apple and when you spend £400-500 on a phone you expect it to work and play propperly....  come on Apple you need to sort out this mess of a update.... Ios 7 was no bother......

Same issue here... iphone5S 64GB.  It's intermittent.  Sometimes the rotation works fine, sometimes it doesn't, but most of the time it doesn't work.
The first time I figured out it wasn't working was when all newly-taken photos and videos were showing up in portrait mode though I always hold in landscape mode when photographing.
Rotation lock is disabled (tried toggling it on and off).  Tried recalibrating the compass on a whim, no effect (although my compass seems to always require calibration when it's launched now).
This issue only started happening after upgrading to iOS8.  I did a reset/restore through iTunes rather than an OTA upgrade.
UPDATE - power-cycling the phone seems to fix it temporarily.

  • OK - my 4s all of a sudden does not connect to wifi - i've noticed chatter out there on this happening to a lot of other people. Apple seems not to want to acknowledge this as a problem. What's up Apple? Should be better than that!

If this is a widespread problem ... then it sounds like Apple needs to step up.
By their handling of this problem I can only suspect that they have an arrangement with carriers to have the wifi become disabled so that we have to use the carriers... and go over our ... data plans.
6 months to go on my plan ... sorry Apple but after 15 years of loyalty ... I'm going to have to reconsider my next phone. When the customer gets treated like a buisiness ... then I guess we have to do the same to you ... nothing personal. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out!

    Hi Seraphiel07.
I have a very similar issue. Hardware involved:
Apple MacMini (Mid 2011) - OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple TV (3rd Generation). Home Sharing (access) enabled.
Apple MacBook Pro (15" Mid-2009). OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple iPad 2 (Wifi only). iOS 6
    Apple iPhone 4S. iOS 6
    All connected through:
Apple Time Capsule 8.0211n (4th Gen)
I have an iTunes library on the MacBook Pro, shared over "Home Sharing" and another (duplicate content, different library name) iTunes library on my MacMini, which is also accessed through the Apple TV.
All software is current (as of Sep 26th).
All movies are iTunes purchases. 80 in total.
All files are purchased (and home shared) under one account.
My last two iTunes purchases both HD movies on 09/17/2012 and 09/05/2012 refuse to appear on any device accessing either of the two Libraries over Home Sharing. It should be noted that every other movie (the other 78) all show up and play correctly. I therefore know it is not an issue with connectivity, otherwise I would see zero movies available.
    I have:
    1. Removed all content from each Library and re-added
    2. Upgraded the OS on the MacMini 10.8.2
    3. Tested viewing the two missing movies on other Apple devices and no luck.
    4. Turn home sharing on and off within iTunes and also on each device.
It would appear to me that the issue is with the files themselves, rather than the devices as different devices and different versions have been tested.
    All comments welcome.
