Does extending a class require a hand-entered constructor in superclass?

Hello,
Trying to extend a class (which doesn't have a main() method, if this matters), I got the following compiler message
NewInput.java:1: cannot resolve symbol
symbol : constructor InputFileDeclared ()
location: class InputFileDeclared
public class NewInput extends InputFileDeclared
After I hand-entered a blank constructor to the superclass the subclass have compiled.
Doesn't a class have a constructor by default?

If your class has a contructor which takes arguments, then the compiler does not provide you with a no-arg constructor. In this case if you need to have a constructor that takes no arguments then you need to write one.
If your base class had a constructor like
public class InputFileRead {
//Constructor
public InputFileRead( String fileName ) {
//Methods
and you wrote your Derived class with no constructor as
public class NewInput extends InputFileRead {
//No constructors
//Methods
Now when you write
NewInput nInp = new NewInput();
since you have not written any constructor for your new class the compiler will provide you with a default no-args constructor which will call the default constructor of your base class. Since there is no default constructor for your base class, you won't be able to instantiate the derived class.
You need to write a no-arg constructor for the new class which will then call the appropriate constructor of the base class.
public class NewInput extends InputFileRead {
//Constructor
public NewInput() {
super( "InputFile.txt" );
//Methods
}

  • Does Apple TV work with wifi that requires you to enter a username and password via the web?

    The wifi service is a public hot spot that is provided by my cable company (Comcast/Xfinity) for its customers.  It requires you to enter your user name and password via a website prior to using it.  Is there a way to make this work with Apple TV?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    There is no web browser on the Apple TV, you cannot directly use a wifi connection that requires a log in this way. you may wish to look at Internet sharing with a notebook.

  • Inconsistent error message when no class end date is entered

    I sometimes am able to create a new class as "Normal" without entering an END DATE, but most times I get an error stating that the END DATE must be provided. Is this behavior normal?
    What makes matters worse is that the end date field does NOT have a asterist next to it indicating that it is a required field, so users assume that they don't need to provide an END DATE until they get the error message.
    Oracle 11i totally patched.

    This is probably down to the type of class you are trying to create. Contact Oracle Support, they will be able to guide you.

  • Extended a class, getting a class cast error

    Hi all,
    I'm writing a program that uses a closed-source jar in its library (with permission, of course).
    One of the classes in that jar wasn't working as I wanted it to, so I extended the class and overwrote one of its methods. So, when using the class, instead of callingThirdPartyClass obj = new ThirdPartyClass();I could useMyThirdPartyClass obj = new MyThirdPartyClass();This seems to work, until a certain line of their code throws a class cast exception:
    java.lang.ClassCastException: org.thirdparty.ThirdPartyClass$2
         at org.thirdparty.Event.findTop(Event.java:279)
         at org.thirdparty.ThreadUtils$4.run(ThreadUtils.java:86
         at java.awt.event.InvocationEvent.dispatch(InvocationEvent.java:209)
         at java.awt.EventQueue.dispatchEvent(EventQueue.java:461)
        ....Why does this occur? Surely, since MyThirdPartyClass is a child of ThirdPartyClass, anything that expects a ThirdPartyClass shouldn't have any problem, right? Or do I have that backwards? And if so, is there anything I can do to fix the problem?
    Thanks!
    Sam

    Specifically, the ThirdPartyClass itself was an extension of a JApplet. Since I wanted to use it directly in my code, I couldn't set the applet's parameters, so I overwrote the getParameters(String) method to return strings of my choosing.Your approach makes little sense to me. Applets follow a well-defined lifecycle. If you wanted to embed the applet into your own application, all you have to do is use the applet following its lifecycle (that is, instantiate it, set the context, invoke init and start and stop and destroy). Overriding anything should not be necessary.That's exactly what I want to do. However, the applet requires one parameter to be set (DefaultModel = some url) -- if this isn't set I can't run the applet. As far as I can tell (and I have an as-yet unanswered question in the Applets forum asking about this), there is no way to set the parameters in an Applet in any way besides putting in in the 'param' tag in the Applet code in the HTML.
    If I'm wrong about that, please let me know.
    On the assumption that I was right, I decided to extend the getParameters(String) method, so that it would return the desired String when asked. Naturally, to do this, I had to extend the entire class.
    This solved the problem of the program failing when it asked for the parameter, but then it failed when it checked the codebase. I overrode the getCodeBase() method, and the applet no longer had a problem there.
    Then I got the exceptions I got above.
    I'm fairly certain (but, naturally, not 100% certain of anything) that neither of my methods should have affected the inner-workings of LiteApplet -- I was overriding methods that were from Applet (and not overridden in LiteApplet, I checked) that are just supposed to pass back strings -- the same Strings that would be passed back if it were embedded in a web page -- and not affect the applet in any way.
    Naturally, I'm wrong about one or more of my assumptions above, but I just can't work out how overriding those two methods could have created the error that I'm getting.

    PS: Here is the entire exception, if you think it could help. I was scrubbing it merely so as not to confuse matters and make my posts overly long. The last exception below gets repeated indefinitely.

  • LoadClass    (error loading a class which extends other class  at run-time)

    Hey!
    I'm using the Reflection API
    I load a class called 'SubClass' which exists in a directory called 'subdir' at run-time from my program
    CustomClassLoader loader = new CustomClassLoader();
    Class classRef = loader.loadClass("SubClass");
    class CustomClassLoader extends ClassLoader. I have defined 'findClass(String className)' method in CustomClassLoader.
    This is what 'findClass(String className)' returns:
    defineClass (className,byteArray,0,byteArray.length);
    'byteArray' is of type byte[] and has the contents of subdir/SubClass.
    the problem:
    The program runs fine if SubClass does not extend any class.
    If however, SubClass extends another class, the program throws a NoClassDefFoundError. How is it conceptually different?
    Help appreciated in Advance..
    Thanks!

    Because i'm a newbie to the Reflection thing, i'm notI don't see reflection anywhere. All I see is class loading.
    sure what role does the superclass play when i'm
    trying to load the derived class and how to get away
    with the errorWell... hint: all the superclass's stuff is not copied into the subclass.
    I am quite sure it fails to load the superclass because of classpath issues.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Tab,
    In this case, SQL Server Analysis Services doesn’t support Distributed Transactions by design. Here is a similar thread about this issue for your reference, please see:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/8b07be45-01b6-49d4-b773-9f441c0e44c9/olaplinked-server-error-msolap-for-linked-server-olaplinked-server-does-not-support-the?forum=sqlanalysisservices
    One workaround is that use SQLCMD to execute the EXEC AT command and saved the results to a file, then import using SSIS.

  • Loading external swfs extending from classes in the same shared codebase

    Hey there!
    I'm currently developing a game in flash and want to be able to divide up my .fla assets in a way that means artists can work on a game menu .fla in isolation from the game.fla and rest of the game code.
    If I could briefly explain how I've approached this so far, I would be extremely if people could shout in my general direction and tell me I am stupid, or even better still, give me helpful advice as to where I am going wrong and how I can correct it!
    My project is setup like this:
    HighScoreMenu.fla -> document class HighScoreMenu extending GameMenu class.
    game.fla ->document class game.as
    game.as class loads the published HighScoreMenu.swf and manipulates the menu i.e. animates on and off screen via inherited functions in the GameMenu class.
    Now this seemed to work to begin with, until my code evolved and upon going to publish my HighScoreMenu.fla flash started complaining about symbols being used in Game.as that were in Game.fla...  If I'm only publishing the HighScoreMenu which extends from GameMenu then why is it even looking to compile Game.as?
    Can you spot the problem in the way I am doing this, or is there a better approach I should try?
    Any advice greatly appreciated!
    Stevie.

    No it doesn't seem to, however though they both have a reference to the HighScoreManager so there is some overlap there between menu and game code, but the menu classes don't reference any symbols on the game.fla...
    Just to clarify, I have an fla HighScoreMenu.fla, which has a child symbol HighScoreMenu which uses the following class.
    public dynamic class HighScoreMenu extends GameMenu
         //convenient storage for competition Manager object
         private var _highScoreManager:HighScoreManager;
    The game then loads this class as follows:
    I load the swf "HighScoreMenu.swf" and once its loaded I obtain the menu class like so:
    var cls:Class = Class( applicationDomain.getDefinition("Menus.HighScoreMenu") );
    var object:* = new cls();
    ...and create a new instance of the menu.
    Is there anything fundamentally wrong with approaching it in this way?

  • How to map a custom enum list to a custom form property in an extended incident class

    Hi,
    I'm struggeling to understand how to map a custom enum list to a custom form property in an extended incident class.
    Here's what i want to have happen:
    I am going to publish a request offering on my SMPortal for allowing users to submit basic IT incidents. I want the form to include "Whom does this problem affect" (answers(This is the custom enum list): Me, Multiple Users, Whole department or Whole
    company), "What is the problem about", "Description" and "Attachments".
    Here's what i've done:
    In the authoring tool i created a MP for the custom enum list and put only the list in it. I sealed the MP and imported it.
    I created another unsealed MP called TST.Incident.Library for storing incident library customizations and extended the incident class to add an extension class i called ClassExtension_Affected scope with a custom property i called AffectedScope. Then i am trying
    to set the datatype of this property to "list". In the "select a list" dialog i cannot chose my previously sealed MP with the custom enum list in it. Why?
    - Do i need to scratch the sealed MP and put the custom enum list in the latter TST.Incident.Library MP instead?
    - If so, can i do that and keep this MP unsealed, or will i get an error on import saying "Unsealed management packs should not contain type definitions"
    - Should i create one sealed MP for both the custom enum list and the extension class + custom property?

    Hi,
    Authoring Tool simply isn't informed about your list. Open the sealed management pack where you define the root of the list in the Authoring Tool and in the same time open TST.Incident.Library. You will have two opened MPs in the Authoring
    Tool and be able to add a custom list for your custom field.
    Cheers,
    Marat

  • Why does this abstract class and method work without implement it?

    hi,
    I have seen many times that in some examples that there are objects made from abstract classes directly. However, in all books, manual and tutorials that I've read explain that we MUST implement those methods in a subclass.
    An example of what I'm saying is the example code here . In a few words that example makes Channels (java.nio.channel) and does operations with them. My problem is in the class to make this channels, because they used the ServerSockeChannel class and socket() method directly despite they are abstracts.
       // Create a new channel: if port == 0, FileChannel on /dev/tty, else
       // a SocketChannel from the first accept on the given port number
    private static ByteChannel newChannel (int netPort)
          throws Exception
          if (netPort == 0) {
             FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream ("/dev/tty");
             return (fis.getChannel());
          } else {
    //CONFLICT LINES
             ServerSocketChannel ssc = ServerSocketChannel.open(); //<--I have never thought do that!! Anyway, how it is static method may work.
             ssc.socket().bind (new InetSocketAddress (netPort)); //<--but here, this method (socket) is abstract. WHY RETURN A SOCKET????????  this mehod should be empty by default.
             System.out.print ("Waiting for connection on port "
                + netPort + "...");
             System.out.flush();
             ByteChannel channel = ssc.accept();
             ssc.close();
             System.out.println ("Got it");
             return (channel);
       } I test this code and works fine. So why can it be??
    Also, I read that the abstract classes can't have static methods. Is it true???
    Please Help!!
    PS: i have seen this kind of code many times. So i feel that I don't understand how its really the abstract methods are made.
    PS2: I understand that obviously you don't do something like this: *"obj = new AbstractClass(); "*. I dont understand how it could be: ServerSocketChannel ssc = ServerSocketChannel.open(); and the compiler didn't warn.

    molavec wrote:
    ServerSocketChannel ssc = ServerSocketChannel.open(); //<--I have never thought do that!! Anyway, how it is static method may work.
    The static method creates an instance of a class which extends ServerSocketChannel, but is actually another non-abstract class.I thought that, but reading the documentation I saw that about open() method:
    Opens a server-socket channel.
    The new channel is created by invoking the openServerSocketChannel method of the system-wide default SelectorProvider object.
    The new channel's socket is initially unbound; it must be bound to a specific address via one of its socket's bind methods before connections can be accepted.
    ...and the problem is the same openServerSocketChannel is abstract, so i don't understand how it could return a ServerSocketChannel.There is a concrete implementation class that has implemented that method.
    I guess that really the open() method use a SelectorProvider's subclase but it doesn't appear in the doc.It doesn't need to. First, you don't care about those implementation details, and second, you know that if the class is abstract, it must use some concrete subclass.
    Ok, I speak Spanish by default (<-- this sounds like "I am a machine", ^_^' ). So, I didn't know how to say that the method would be {}. Is there a way to say that?? I recommendable for me to know, for the future questions o answers.Not sure what you're saying here. But the other respondent was trying to explain to you the difference between an abstract method and an empty method.
    // abstract method
    public abstract void foo();
    // empty method
    public void bar() {
    Which class does extend ServerSocketChannel? I can not see it.It may be a package-private class or a private nested class. There's no need to document that specific implementation, since you never need to use it directly.

  • How to Extend Java class in UI Module

    Hi All,
    I am trying to make z for one of the java file GenericSearchDynamicContent.java in the standard package com.sap.wec.app.common.module.catalog.ui.utils. Can anyone please let me know what are steps do i need to follow to extend the same java file in our customer namespace and make use of it.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Rahul.

    Hi Rahul,
    It's upto you whether you want to keep seprate packages for custom changes (then create your own package and keep all the Z class under this) or create a Z_GenericSearchDynamicContent.java and extend this class by GenericSearchDynamicContent.java.
    After doing this you can make your custom changes accordingly and you have to also make the changes in *config.xml (replace this entry GenericSearchDynamicContent by Z_GenericSearchDynamicContent.java.) files as mapping is done there.
    Could you please let me know if you need any further information.

  • 10.5.7 This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.

    First, 10.5.7 is not showing up in software update. I downloaded both the delta and combo 10.5.7 updates and they both give me "This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." I've done all the requisite stuff, permissions, volume check, reset PRAM, etc. I've downloaded the updates several times, and they worked on my 2008 iMac and 2007 Macbook Pro, so I know they work. I've searched and searched and can't find a resolution. It's as if there is some signature written to my boot volume that is preventing this update. Applecare was of no help either. Any ideas?

    Hi! Im new to this forum and i really dont know if this is the right place for me to say this but i really need some help! I have a MAc OS x 10.5.7 and had bootcamp installed on it so i could run both windows and mac! Over the last few days ive recieved a trojan virus on my windows... so i deleted my partition on mac so i basically just had Mac... now i am trying to reinstall my partition but disk utility is saying that i have an invalid volume free block count as it should be 41189365 instead of 41182017....argh! ive read the help stuff on it and it suggests me removing everything off my mac... but will i need 2 still have the mac install disc 1 to hand? as i have currently misplaced this and im ripping my hair out! Ive never had problems with my Imac until now and im really worried! I could really do with the help! Thanks Sam

  • Package.Class extends Package.Class ??

    Is there any way I can make a class in a package extend another class in the same package://---- File: JrcCode1.java
    package jrc;
    public class JrcCode1 {
      public JrcCode1() {
        System.out.println("JrcCode1");
    //---- File: JrcCode2.java
    package jrc;
    public class JrcCode2 extends JrcCode1 {     //cannot resolve symbol, class JrcCode1
      public JrcCode2() {
        super();
        System.out.println("JrcCode2");
    }Thanks,
    James

    The current directory is not automatically in the classpath.
    You have to set it up that way. That may be your problemI have tried doing this, and it's still the same! The first code compiles but the second code fails:
    javac -sourcepath . -classpath . JrcCode1.java
    javac -sourcepath . -classpath . JrcCode2.java
    Try extending jrc.JrcCode1. It might work, but i didnt test it outI have tried this, and it still fails:
    JrcCode2.java:3: cannot resolve symbol
    symbol : class JrcCode1
    location: package jrc
    public class JrcCode2 extends jrc.JrcCode1 {
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks alot!

  • Implemenet/Extend interface/class in default package

    Filename: DeaultInterface.java
    public interface DefaultInterface {
        // Abstract Methods...
    Filename: ConcreteClass.java
    package com.company;
    import DefaultInterface;
    public class ConcreteClass implements DefaultInterface {
        // Implementation of Abstract Methods...
    }When I compile above java code it gives error "cannot find symbol. symbol: class DefaultInterface".
    Can anyone explain why can't we implement the interface/extend the class in default package(no package)?

    You CAN implement the interface defined in the default package.
    What you CANNOT do is import it. And that is because the Java Language Specification specifies that named types can only be referenced by their simple name if they are imported and must otherwise be referenced by their fully qualified name.
    See the 7.5 Import Declarations in the Java Language Specification - http://docs.oracle.com/javase/specs/jls/se7/html/jls-7.html
    >
    An import declaration allows a named type or a static member to be referred to by a simple name (§6.2) that consists of a single identifier.
    Without the use of an appropriate import declaration, the only way to refer to a type declared in another package, or a static member of another type, is to use a fully qualified name (§6.7).
    A type in an unnamed package (§7.4.2) has no canonical name, so the requirement for a canonical name in every kind of import declaration implies that (a) types in an unnamed package cannot be imported, and (b) static members of types in an unnamed package cannot be imported. As such, §7.5.1, §7.5.2, §7.5.3, and §7.5.4 all require a compile-time error on any attempt to import a type (or static member thereof) in an unnamed package.

    So you can't reference that type by importing it because you can't import a type that doesn't have a canonical nmae. And you can't just use the simple name because, as the first statement above says you have to import it to use the simple name.
    When you use the simple name of that type without an import the simple name would refer to a class IN your 'com.company' named package.
