Does Migration Assistant copies all iTunes/iPhoto data to the new Mac?

I currently placed all my iphoto and itunes data on an external harddrive in my current setup. I have a MacMini 2010. Im planning to upgrade its HARDDRIVE with a smaller capacity but faster SSD.
So here goes my question... (the fact is, i haven't tried Migration Assistant ever, hence these troubling questions..)
I would keep my old harddrive intact as it used to be. I would install the SSD on the MacMini and do a clean install of OSX Lion which is also the current version of my OS in the old HARDDRIVE. I'm planning to attach the OLD HARDDRIVE using an HD enclosure and connect it using USB/Firewire externally. If i use, Migration Assistant to copy my settings and files in the OLD HARDDRIVE, will it also copy all my itunes/iphoto data into the new SSD? (music and photo data that are stored in an EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE right now) - meaning itunes and iphoto data folders are in an external hard drive.
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't fit. Im hoping itunes and iphoto would just LINK all those files as it used to be on my EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE and NOT COPY it to my small capacity SSD.
Do you get it? Please ask me if you don't. I just want to make sure a smooth transition to the new SSD if i push thru.

You can restore your iPod to "New" which will erase every thing and install fresh iOS software or you can restore to a particular backup that you have previously created. In this case, your iPod Apps & data will appear as per the backup. Note that some content is not in a backup and will need to be synced back to the iPad from the iTunes music library or from, for example, the iPhoto photo library.

  • If i associate my apple id with another email will i lose my icloud data or i will still be able to access all my stored data with the new linked to my apple id email address?

    hi there
if i associate my apple id with another email will i lose my icloud data or i will still be able to access all my stored data with the new linked to my apple id email address?
i mean i am not signing up for a new account, just changing my old id primary email which is my apple id login into account.
in other words, www.icloud.com will recognize that it is still me if i login on the site? will i be able to see there all my stored information?
and if i change my password, does it automatically changes the @icloud.com password which should be the same as my apple id pass?
    thanks

After opening the email it shoud of had you enter the Apple ID and password. Using certian web browser's can cause errors. You can adjust securty settings (big pain) or you use another browser. Using Firefox or Safari should do the trick.
Let me know if using Firefox or Safari resolved it.

    The requirements for iTunes:
    Macintosh System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core processor
OS X version 10.6.8 or later
    400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store
Your Mac must be able to run OSX 10.6.8. If you can run that OSX then you can run iTunes 11.1.
    Which Mac do you have?

Does RoboHelp Server store all data in the database and only code and templates on the web server?

We need a separate web server and database server. All the content must be in the database. It looks like RoboHelp Server might not be the right architecture.

  • Photos replacing iPhoto - importing from the new Mac app

    Hi All,
I just installed Elements 13 and opened for the first time. Couldn't import my library of photos as iPhoto was replaced by Photos (new app) in the latest OS update on my desktop.
I get a message 'iPhoto is empty'.  All my photos are now in the new app library. Is there likely to be an update soon from Adobe or do I have no choice other than to manually and tediously export thousands of images and reimport them into Elements?
    Cheers, Slink

    Hi all,
    Thanks for the answers.
Thanks for the link Barbara B... looks like it's Apple doing their 'post Steve Jobs' thing again. Apple used to innovate to create 'great customer experiences'... now all they seem to do is have some idiots in the finance department decide what customer experience can make them the most money and tell me that's the experience I want to have. I used to enjoy new Apple devices, systems and apps because every one seemed to somehow make things easier or better... now I dread them because of the inevitably trouble-shooting and work-arounds I have to go through to prevent them making life harder.
As to the iPhoto question. I can still choose to open my photos in iPhoto if I want but when the app is opened a message pops up saying "all photos have been migrated..." but none of my new photos will appear, nor any edits I've made.
I've started playing with the Elements app and it seems really good. I love the guided edit mode.

  • Back up data to a new Mac.

When you buy a new MAC, you can back up your data, to the new MAC.
You can do this process at very beginning when you first set up your new MAC or you can do later, at any time, by using Migration Assistant.
What are the difference by using the two procedures? What are the good and not good things?
    Thank you

When you do it when you first setup the Mac, there is no chance of synchronization issues of old and new data.
If you do it later, you have to be careful to backup any essential data first to an external source before importing, as it may be overwritten in the synchronization process by accident.

  • HT4413 Does Migration Assistant use a lot of internet data?

We're on a set limit and don't want to exceed it..
Anyone with prior experience would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Migration Assistant doesn't use Internet. If you want to use Migration Assistant via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, Migration Assistant uses the router to migrate data to the other Mac that has to be connected to the same router

  • I used Migration Assistant to copy data to an new MacBook Pro from an old via my Time Capsule. When asked if to inherit time machine history on the new Mac, I mistakenly said no. How do I go back one step to say yes?

There isn't enough space on the Time Capsule to create a separate backup of the data on the new MacBook. And I am reluctant to delete old backups of the old MacBook to create space to backup the new machine. This occurred about 3 weeks ago so the data on the two machines are now out of sync. If I start over by formatting the new MacBook and rerunning Migration Assistant to pull data from the Time Capsule, how do i preserve the last 3 weeks of data on the new MacBook, considering that I didn't keep track of which files changed in the last 3 weeks?

All the rest of the stuff is where it should be.  As best I can tell. I have been going through my programs one at a time to see what works.  With the change in the OS (Launchpad? What the heck?) I am finding a significant number of my old programs are not working. Some I have found upgrades.  But without a working mail program, the machine is pretty useless for work.
The Apple techies had me run through 3 hours of 'stuff' (holding down keys and restarting, etc, etc).  It still does not launch. I think we are waiting for a 'miracle', but I need to know now if they should just come get this piece of junk or if they really are able to find a solution in a timely manner.

  • Migration assistant problem w/ Itunes not opening

I just bought a new IMac with 2 HD. 1 solid state 256G and 1 regular 1TB drive. I tried to transfer all my information from my Macbook aluminuim with no firewire using the migration assistant with my last update copy of the time machine backup in an external drive. I went Ok, however the installation was done in the 256 D and went almost full (it never appeared and option of where to install) My intention is to have the system and applications on the Solid State and the rest in the 1TB.  I create a new user folder on the 1TB and copy with the finder all the files and folders of my user. Then I change in account the path of the user folder to the new one. Corroborate it on the finder and delete the original user on the solid state. Applications and system remain on the solid state. Then I change all the rights and privileges of folders in library and system to my user giving full permition. It worked fine since I could open correctly agenda, mail and ical. However, I have problems in Itunes. When i tried to open it it says it cannot be done for the permition. When I look up for Itunes folders rights It doesnt appear my user and when I try to change this (as in the rest of the folders) doesnt give me even the option of doing it. I tried to download a new Itunes but then when trying to open the dmg. it says that the installer is corrupt. Any ideas in how to fix this?
    Jans

Hmmm...that is an interesting question. It shuts down now, but would not before? Perhaps Norton was busy doing something. To be totally honest, I hate Norton, its expensive and a HUGE memory hog. My PC ran much slower when I was using Norton. Since removing it and going to a free antivirus program, it has speeded up tremendously.
Depends on what you disabled during MSCONFIG. Whatever you disabled was most likely the culprit to that as well.

  • I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on external drive.  I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive.  Is this going be a problem?

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

  • HT4889 Am I wrong or does Migration Assistant not work in Mountain Lion (10.8.2) when migrating from a PowerPC running Tiger (10.4.11)? Apple really needs to get on the ball or face losing people buying their new desktop products.

The title alone speaks to my frustration about this issue.
Used the process that was recommended by Apple to migrate from my "Lampshade" iMac (PPC running 10.4.11) to the new iMac (Intel running 10.8.2) and I got bupkiss...
Just a spinning wheel (not beachball) and no drive recognized using Migration Assistant for both nor when using Target Mode on the iMac running 10.4.11 and Migration Assistant on the iMac running 10.8.2. Which is ironic, or more accurately oxymoronic, since the iMac in Target Mode (10.4.11) is recognized on the desktop of the iMac running 10.8.2 but not in the Migration Assistant. And before you can misdiagnose..it is not the Thunderbolt connection since I have the Apple recommended Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter and also used the Firewire 400 to 800 cable to expedite the transfer.
    On a personal note...
I'm not bashing Apple for this...they are "head and shoulders" above the competition in what they do but I've been burned a few times so I feel I can share a small bit of loyal customer advice...I understand your iOS and mobile products hold huge sway in company focus and market-share but I find it a tad unwise to slack on the desktop applications. I don't recall any app for the iPhone/iPad family being made on the iPhone/iPad...only from desktop applications if I recall correctly. And how can I clearly "Move my Mac even further ahead"  as your marketing states when I can't even migrate my files from my old Mac to my new one in a simple fashion as per your instructions?
I thank anyone in advance with an answer or even a workaround for this issue and please have a great day.

Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger to OS X Lion
Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 computers to OS X Lion over your Wi-Fi or a wired network is not supported. However, if both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port, you can use Target Disk Mode to transfer your data:
Verify that both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port. Note that different model Macs may have different FireWire connectors, which will require an appropriate cable, such as FireWire 400 to FireWire 800.
On the Mac you want to transfer data from, Restart, and immediately hold the T key.
Wait for the FireWire logo to appear on the screen.  If it does not, restart and try again.
Connect both Macs via the FireWire cable.
On the Mac you want to transfer data to, Open the Migration Assistant application.
Select the option "From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk" and click Continue.
Select the option "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" and click Continue.

EDIT: Actually I realize you did follow these directions and if your drive is seen on the new Mac it should work. You're entitled to free Apple support with the new purchase, I'd give them a call.

  • Import (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (  many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.

Attempted to import 6.5 GB of (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (plus many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.  I read a previous response to a similar question -- to copy the pictures library to the new computer.  How best to do that?

There's actually an option to iPhoto Library Manager that makes this all almost work flawlessly (and work well enough for me). With the exception of Photo Albums that the pictures are part of, if you select "Library > Rebuild Library..." and then select "Scavange Orphaned Photos" check box, then it will put all the Photos and Movies into the "Scavanged Photos" album. It matches the modified pictures to their originals. It preserves all the event names and photo groupings. All the meta-data I could spot check it got right (although with 44k pictures, I only checked a few). If you fail to select this option, however, it will find no pictures at all when it goes to rebuild the library (this was true of the small test libraries I tried as well as the big, monster 280GB library I just finished converting). The conversion process took 5 hours to run, but in the end produced a library my new iPhoto can read and that I can interact with. I'll be suggesting to the iPhoto Library Manager folks a notation that would estimate the number of Orphaned Photos and display that number as a hint to the user that the option would be useful.
Edited: Thanks to Old Toad and LarryHN for their help in finding which of the many options to transition this library to 9.5.1 I needed to use. Sorry if I took my frustration of the past several months out on you guys for generously trying to help me.

  • Best way to migrate iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, Address Book to Mac?

I have been a user of Macs since 1985, but my wife has always used Windows (and before that, MSDOS).
I have now gotten for her a new MacBookPro and would like suggestions on the best way to migrate the data needed to sync her iPhone with the new Mac.
Currently, her contacts and calendar are in Microsoft Outlook for Windows, her photos are in some kind of Windows program and her music is in iTunes for Windows.
What is the smoothest, easiest way to migrate these Windows files into a Mac format so she can use iCal on the Mac for her calendar, Address Book for contacts, iPhoto for pix and transfer her music from iTunes/Windows to iTunes for Mac?
Is there any way to just sync the new MacBookPro with the iPhone and have it upload the data from the iPhone to the Mac????
Just lookin' for the easiest way to do this....

Have the Apple Store do this for you or call Apple support and they will help you do it.
