Does Mount-SPContentDatabase Require IISReset or Application Pool Recycling

We need to attach a very large number of Content Databases to production farm. We are in dilemma about whether we will need to do an IISReset or Application Pool Recycle once we use Mount-SPContentDatabase powershell commandlets to mount the database.
In our test environment, without doing IISReset and Application Pool Recycle, we were able to browse the site collection which was part of the newly mounted Content Database. However, we don't know  what should be the ideal solution for our production
farm.
Thanks, Bhadr :) Mark as Answer if it solves your problem. Vote As Helpful if the post is helpful for you.

If you're removing a content database that contains the same site collections as the database you're adding, it is possible that you may need to do an IISReset.
Unlikely, though.

  • Unexpected Application Pool recycle

    Hi all,
in a new SharePoint 2013 environment with single server we are facing issues caused by an unexpected application pool recycle.
    Environment:
    Sharepoint 2013 15.0.4569.1000
    SQL Server 2012 SP1 11.0.34.12.0
Both are installed on one server with OS Windows Server 2012
At the time, the application pool recycles unexpected, we get the following error in the event logs:
WebHost failed to process a request.
    Sender Information: System.ServiceModel.ServiceHostingEnvironment+HostingManager/14128997
Exception: System.ServiceModel.ServiceActivationException: Request to the service at '~/_vti_bin/client.svc' cannot be dispatched because the virtual application at '/' is shutting down. ---> System.InvalidOperationException: Request to the service at '~/_vti_bin/client.svc' cannot be dispatched because the virtual application at '/' is shutting down.

    at System.ServiceModel.ServiceHostingEnvironment.EnsureServiceAvailableFast(String relativeVirtualPath, EventTraceActivity eventTraceActivity)
    Process Name: w3wp
    Process ID: 10272
In ULS logs, the following is logged:
11/13/2014 15:25:25.78 w3wp.exe (0x2960) 0x3E00 SharePoint Foundation General avey High The application domain /LM/W3SVC/117770872/ROOT-1-130603160450118907 is unloading and going to be recycled.
Where the application domain contains the ID of the affected SharePoint IIS site.
I have removed all runtime recycling events and only set up a scheduled recycling at 2am. Furthermore according to compilation-Element article, the parameter numRecompilesBeforeAppRestart was set to "2000" in web.config without any success.
At the SharePoint environment, some custom solutions are installed, but the vendor assured, the application does not call any recycle event.
Do you have any idea how to find the source of the recycle events or how to fix this?
Any idea would be much appreciated.
    Thank in advance!

Are there any sort of automated web configs for any applications that exist within that App Pool? App Pool timeouts (20 minutes idle) are not the same thing as recycles :)
Are there any failures in the System Event Log when you see these messages? What do the WAS events in the System Event Log show?

  • Why aren't service application pools recycled on solution retract/update?

When you update or retract a SharePoint solution, it's supposed to automatically restart or recycle any affected application pools on all servers on the farm. For web application pools, this appears to be largely true (though I've seen exceptions). However
for service application pools, it's definitely not, and this essentially means that after updating a SharePoint solution, you must manually recycle/restart
the service application pools, or you get all sorts of potentially weird behaviour because code running under the service application pool is still using old versions of your assemblies (one obvious error that happens frequently for us is "The located
assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference", but there are far more subtle possible errors). My question is - why would this be true, and is there a good way around it? Even if it's just to accept that customers must use our
provided install tool to upgrade and the install tool does the correct thing, it would seem quite a significant amount of code is required to search all servers in the farm and request them to restart their application pools (I do have some code, but haven't
    tested it yet).
    Anyone else experienced this?

The application pool recyle on update-SPSolution depends on how the solution manifest file if created. In the manifest file, if the solution node has attribute ResetWebServerModeOnUpgrade set to Recycle, the the upgrade process recycles the application pool.

  • Service application pool recycling in SharePoint 2013

When to recycle service application pool in SharePoint 2013? is it necessary to do so?.
When I look at worker process section in inetmanager i see 25 GB is for reporting service application pool as used memory and for excel services application pool it is 11 GB
what does it mean? it is consuming this much amount of RAM? if so how we need to plan...do i need to recycle once in day? currently we are seeing slow performance. is it because of this? Please help.
    Thanks, Ram Ch

Thanks for the response to both of you.
Trevor, I did all that you specified, result of that is the following forum questions raised by me.(it is same issue performance).
Private memory is used memory right? I am confused with unused memory you mentioned, can you please clarify.
and also please go through below questions raised by me for the same issue. Kindly help.

  • CR XI R2 "Database Login Failed" Recycled application pool and now it works

    Hello,
I have a web application using CR XI R2 that has several reports which are pushed a dataset.  These reports have been runing fine until today when I received an error stating "Database login failed."  "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" in the report viewer control.
I recycled the application pool and the reports started working again.
    My questions are:
What could be the cause of this and how can it be avoided?
Why does recycling the application pool correct the problem?
    Regards.

    Hi Tom,
Recycling keeps problematic applications running smoothly, especially when it is not feasible to modify the application code. Recycling helps ensure that problematic applications do not cause other applications to fail, and that system resources can be recovered from unhealthy applications.
Recycling an application pool causes the WWW service to shut down all running worker processes that are serving the application pool, and then start new worker processes. Whether the WWW service starts the new worker processes before it stops the existing one depends on the DisallowOverlappingRotation property in the metabase. Recycling an application pool does not alter any state in HTTP.sys or change any configuration in the metabase.
    Note:
When an application pool is serviced by more than one worker process, the recycle operation is staggered in some scenarios. Only when a worker process is recycled on demand or when all of the worker processes hit their memory limits at the same time would they be restarted simultaneously.
For more info regarding this have a look to this [article|http://blogs.msdn.com/david.wang/archive/2006/01/26/Thoughts-on-Application-Pool-Recycling-and-Application-Availability.aspx]

  • Security Token Service Application Pool high CPU

The SecurityTokenServiceApplicationPool seems to be using really high CPU at times and it seems to slow down the servercausing spike to almost 100% CPU, recycling takes care of it temporarily, it will also go down on its own but to a lesser extent.
I cant seem to see any cause of this in the logs.
The Security Token Service Application Pool isnt on a recycle schedule by default.
Does anyone recommend putting it on a recycle schedule?
What are some common causes of it
    thanks

    Hi,
As I understand, the SecurityTokenServiceApplicationPool caused high CPU usage in your envrionment.
Would recycling the application pool be help?
To check if there is performance issue, please provide more information about your application server which host this service application.

  • The Managed Metadata Service or Connection is currently not available. The Application Pool or Managed Metadata Web Service may not have been started. Please Contact your Administrator.

    Hi,
I'm not able to access the term store. I get an below mentioned error.
"The Managed Metadata Service or Connection is currently not available. The Application Pool or Managed Metadata Web Service may not have been started. Please Contact your Administrator. "
Since this is happening on my local machine (Dev environment). I have full control on the term store and the all the site collections.
Hence, this is not a permission issue.
I have checked, the Metadata service is active on the machine. All the application pools in IIS is running.
After reading one of the recommendation on internet, I created a new Managed Metadata Service.
After which I was able access both (old and new) MMS from Central Admin only (highlight the MMS from manage service applications and click Manage ) and not from the site collection (term store management).
Now again its not working after I did an IISRESET.
The managed metadata service (Managed Metadata Service Connection) is grayed out.
    ULS Error says:
Failed to create ManageLink for service proxy 'Managed Metadata Service'. Exception: System.TimeoutException: The request channel timed out attempting to send after 00:00:09.9999999. Increase the timeout value passed to the call to Request or increase the SendTimeout

    Hi Victoria,
    Thanks for your reply
I tried making all the changes you had recommended and which are mentioned in the link you have provided.
I tried making all possible combination of changes to the web.config and client.config files but it does not make any difference to the environment.
One thing is that, my error in ULS logs has changed.

    Anyone know what to do?

    I

    Hi Erik,
The solution of having the two root ApplicationModules share a single JDBC connection violates some assumptions of the BC4J architecture and could result in some strange race conditions in JDBC.
We should focus your solution on how the panels are released. It ought to be possible to release the BindingContainer for the panel without releasing the underlying DataControl. With this solution you would only require one root ApplicationModule and one JDBC connection.
How are you releasing the ADF and BC4J references when you close the panel? I would expect you to be invoking release on the DCBindingContainer instance only. If you are already doing this then what is causing the commit/rollback?
    Hope this helps,
    JR

  • Setting Users for my managed services and application pools

I setup my SharePoint 2013 test environment and I developed an intranet site. Now inside my test environment I set all the application pool & managed services to use Farm user account for simplicity. Now I want to setup my UAT environment and I want
to follow the best practice for managing users and service accounts.
I have read the “Core Solutions Of MS SharePoint 2013” book, and it have listed the following table:-
First question. What is the difference when saying that the user “Must be a member of the Farm Administrators group” Or must be “Domain user account”?
Second question , when I first install SharePoint 2013 a lot of applications pools and managed services such as excel services , access services, Performance Point Service Application, business
data connectivity and Machine Translation Service  will be automatically created , so which account they will be using and should I define separate accounts for each managed service ?
Third question. What is the recommendation for SharePoint 2013 regarding service accounts?, to use separate account for each manage service, for example one user for excel services , second user
    for access services ,etc?
Fourth question. For example the documentation mentioned that the Required roles for the excel services is “Domain user account.”, but what permissions this domain user need to have ?
thanks for any help, and sorry so adding multiple questions inside the same post.

Q #1: This means the user must be part of the Farm Admins group. Every user is a Domain User.
Q #2: Generally those should be using a single Domain User account in a single Application Pool to minimize memory usage and reduce unnecessary complexity.
Q #3: The less Application Pools the better. E.g. One account/App Pool for all Web Applications, one account/App Pool for all Service Applications, and then Central Administration is obviously separate.
Q #4: You don't need to specifically give this type of user any sort of rights

  • Require a single App Pool for multiple websites in Azure Cloud Sevices

    Hi All,
I am deploying multiple (very small) websites under one web role.  The code set is identical but configured/DB per tenant.  I am just getting this ready for production and have a huge road block where it is running out of memory. I have troubleshooted
this and its because it is allocating each website to its own app pool.  It therefore has circa 500mb of ram allocated to each app pool after the app started.  My websites don't require this segregation and as I wish to publish 50+ tiny websites
on one webrole, you can see my issue.  50*500mb.  I have manually gone into the instance/IIS and moved the websites to one app role and it now works how I wish.  The memory was released and even with every site under load, the increase in memory
is well within parameters.  Can I please have some help in how I configure one app pool for all websites specified in the service definition please?  Don't mind startup tasks as I already have those but not sure how it would know what the app pool
was called given its a GUID.
    Thanks,
    Steve.

    Hi,
      >> Don't mind startup tasks as I already have those but not sure how it would know what the app pool was called given its a GUID.
From my experience, you can write some code in the web role's OnStart method to alter application pool. You can refer to
    http://blog.elastacloud.com/2011/01/26/windows-azure-apppool-settings-programmatic-modification/ for a sample.
However, you can also consider other approaches which may be better options. For instance, use a virtual machine which allows you to use UI to configure everything. Or use several WAWS Websites (free/shared) and host each small site as a single Website.
Those tires of Website does not offer all capability of web role, but if you just want to host a bunch of small sites which are rarely hit, they may save you the cost.

  • How to check process is running for an application pool on remote server

    Hi,
I am creating console application which will check whether WCF is up and running. I am thinking of the approach whether w3wp prcoess is running for a particular application pool using some .net API. We have different website with different application pool.
I know we can use metatdata or any operation inside WCF service to test svcutil or proxy methods but i don't want that. Please help.
    Thanks,
    Dhanaji

I assume your goal is to simply provide a heartbeat to periodically make sure that a service is running?  There is no real guarantee that a service will be available until you actually try to call it.
Also please realize that you're going to impact the server's performance by doing this.  IIS is set up to idle out apps that aren't being used. If you periodically poll the service then you will prevent IIS from doing this.  The result will be
that you'll see a WCF service running even if nobody every uses it.  Is this really what you want?  Hence if you have a lot of WCF services being checked then the server is wasting resources on services that might not be needed.
IIS doesn't work like a normal application.  It hosts your WCF service.  You should let IIS handle the lifetime of your service rather than using a heartbeat.  It would take a catastrophic failure for IIS to be unable to start a service when
a request comes in.  The app pool itself may be running even without the WCF app running. An app pool is a collection of apps so if any app is running then the pool is running.  Checking the pool tells you nothing about the apps in it.
You mentioned that you don't want to use IIS metadata or a proxy but that is the only 2 options you have.  Personally I would just hit the endpoint with a HttpWebRequest and verify you get a response but the IIS metadata would be a close second.

  • Multiple application pools for ColdFusion possible in the same IIS website?

I would like to set up a single website with CFM11 under IIS8.5
In this website there are several CFM applications, each under a different "Application" subfolder. For security purposes, monitoring and separate maintenance shutdowns per application, these would all need their own "application pool".
However, this means that these applications should run under a different application pool than their website root node. In IIS this causes a 403.18 exception:
    HTTP Error 403.18 - Forbidden
The specified request cannot be processed in the application pool that is configured for this resource on the Web server.
    Most likely causes:
•An ISAPI filter or custom module changed the URL to run in a different application pool than the original URL.
•An ISAPI extension (or custom module) used ExecuteURL (or ExecuteRequest) to run in a different application pool than the original URL.
•You have a custom error page that is located in one application pool but is referenced by a Web site in another application pool. When the URL is processed, it is determined by IIS that that it should have been processed in the first application pool, not the other pool.
•The Web site has multiple applications configured. The application this request is configured to run in is set to run in an application pool that does not exist.
All works fine if the "applications" in the subfolders run under the same application pool as the website root. However that is not my preferred setup... The behaviour is consistent over all CFM-applications that I deploy, no matter how simple they are...
    Two questions:
    - is coldfusion actually looking to "higher" folders than I expect it to? (and can that be avoided)
    - any hints or experiences on how to avoid / solve this issue?

Here are the steps you need to follow:
When you create connector for your ColdFusion 11 website, you get the “Jakarta” as virtual directory added under your website in IIS. If you don't then add 'jakarta' as virtual directory in your website.
You need to right click on “Jakarta” folder and click on “Convert to Application”.
Select the new Application Pool of the Application (say Test) added under website (CF 11)
    Click OK. Restart IIS.
NOTE :  You need not to restart IIS as well however if you still face the issue after following the above steps then try to restart IIS.

We are trying to implement a wcf service that exposes a net.msmq endpoint.  We are running windows server 2008 R2/IIS 7.5 running on a DOMAIN mode.
    1. Our service is called service.svc and it is deployed under an application called Test in the default website (application pool running under network service)
    2. The url to reach the service webpage is http://machinename/Test/service.svc.
    3. We created a private queue called Test/service.svc and we configured permissions for network service to full control.
Now, when the application pool is "alive" the service picks up the messages correctly, but as soon as the application pool gets recycled (because of timeout or any other reason), the service stops picking up the messages, that just sit in the queue until the service starts again by browsing to the service webpage (http://machinename/Test/service.svc)
I know this is a popular question, but I already tried several solutions with no luck (for example, we triedhttp://keithelder.net/blog/archive/2009/06/03/fix-for-wcf-netmsmqbinding-not-picking-up-messages-in-queue.aspx,http://www.codewrecks.com/blog/index.php/2009/03/17/hosting-a-wcf-service-based-on-msmq-in-iis7/,http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wcf/thread/a1df55c4-e642-442a-9057-f0aec278d10c/ and other ones)
    Any Help?

    Hi Steven,
I am Alessandro's colleague, I am working with him on these net.msmq issues.
Our configuration includes a transactional queue called Test/Service.svc (unauthenticated,
we shut down all security for the moment...does it matter?) and these attributes on the service:
    [ServiceContract]
    public interface IService
    [OperationContract(IsOneWay=true)]
    void ProcessMyMessage(MyClass parameter);
    [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerCall, TransactionIsolationLevel = IsolationLevel.Serializable, TransactionTimeout = "00:03:00")]
    public class Service: IService
    [OperationBehavior(TransactionScopeRequired = true, TransactionAutoComplete = true)]
    public void ProcessMyMessage(MyClass parameter)
    //Do some stuff here
The service is hosted on IIS 7.5 under an application called Test (so that the full http address of the service is http://machine/Test/Service.svc).
In the configuration (for both client and service) we specified None for the security mode, "true" value in durable and exactlyOnce
The Net.msmq Listener Adapter windows service is running fine under the Network Service account (the same as our application pool)
Is there something we are missing?
Also, can you explain how a transaction not configured properly can create this behaviour? In my understanding the process of delivering a message happens in 3 steps (I remember a nice picture of this the Juval Lowy book):
    1) Transaction 1: client delivers message to local instance of msmq. The transaction rolls back if the message does not get delivered.
    2) Transaction 2: the local instance of msmq delivers the message to the remote (service) instance of msmq. The transaction rolls back if the message does not get delivered.
    3) Transaction 3: wcf activates my service which picks up the message and process it. The transaction rolls back if the service fails to pick up the message or does not complete the transaction (for example, because of an unhandled exception).
The message gets delivered to the service machine successfully, so I am assuming that steps 1 and 2 are executed correctly. If my service was not configured to handle transaction properly, wcf should still activate it and do something with it. Or at least,
if it doesn't get activated at all, this should be the case even when the application pool is well alive and awake, because it should be a configuration problem. Instead, the service works great if the appPool is alive and it never gets activated when the
appPool is sleeping (absolute nothing in the .svclog trace file generated by the service). Am I saying something wrong?

    Hi All,
I am using Virtual box to connect to Sharepoint 2013 VPC. Due to an unexpected sutdown of my machine the VPC got some issue. Now I restored it using my bak up file. But after this when I deploy my sharepoint 2013 farm solution Iam getting the following error.
Error occurred in deployment step 'Recycle IIS Application Pool': Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SharePoint, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified..
Editing the web.config and adding dependentAssembly didnt worked for me.
What could be the issue? Any suggestions ?
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi,
Please try to do as follows:
    1. Check your farm solution whether reference the Microsoft.SharePoint.dll. Or try to add the Microsoft.SharePoint.dll into the bin folder.
    2. Execute the iisreset command.
    3. Create a new farm solution and check whether the issue still occurs or not.

  • Error occurred in deployment step 'Recycle IIS Application Pool'

Currently i’m working on a development machine for SharePoint 2010. Even the development machine is setup with multiple accounts as security describes. Therefore sometimes you run into strange (security) error messages. The following error message
occured when i tried to deploy a SharePoint project from Visual Studio 2010.
Error occurred in deployment step ‘Recycle IIS Application Pool’:
    <nativehr>0×80070005</nativehr><nativestack></nativestack>Access denied
It seems that the account under which your Visual Studio 2010 is running needs to have sufficient rights on the web application to which you are deploying your solution. In my case this was easily fixed by putting my domain account in the site collection
administrators list for that specific web application.

    Hi vishal,
The root cause of the issue is
You don't have IIS restart privilege on windows OS
Even if you have it, you have not added your login account in to SharePoint sitecollection administrator.
    To solve the issue
To see whether you have privilege or not, you can open a command prompt and type "IISReset".
If you able to restart, then it will restart successfully otherwise it will deny it.  The reason is, Though you are in administrators group, windows 2008 will not run on the administrator privilege. Every time when you do an operation like IIS
restart or Installation, it will prompt for UAC (User Account Control). You should accept the dialog box and elevate the privilege to run the operation.
Or you can right click the application whatever you want to run and click the menu option "Run as Administrator" which will solve the issue.
If you want to avoid UAC and directly run through you admin account then, go to Control panel -> Manage account -> Hide UAC
Second if you have all the privilege and still you are getting error in VS2010 as "'Recycle IIS Application Pool':0x80070005Access denied, then you have to add your account in to site collection admin.
    1) You can do this by going to sharepoint administration page.
    2) Navigate to the site collection administration option
    3) Add your name into site collection administrator as a second owner. SharePoint will allow a second owner for site colleciton

    Thanks,
