Snow Leopard is no longer being updated, 10.6.8, was the last update. So, a "really long time," will be forever.
Yes, ML has graphic driver updates, but since there is no way to guess whether it impacts your unmentioned hardware, there is no way your question can be answered.

Click Preferences
Click the 'Accounts' tab
Make sure your iCloud account is highlighted in the column on the left.
In the account information section what does it say next to:
Incoming Mail Server?
Outgoing Mail Server?

I recently updated? to Lion from 10.6.8(snow leopard), and things seem to be running slower. Has anyone had similar problems? I have Feb 2011 Macbook pro 13" 2.3 Ghz.
As Shootist pointed out, the system uses more power.
However, initially it will reindex the hard drive for spotlight, which will slow things down temporarily.
It also must rebuild caches that eventually will speed things up.
If it has completed indexing the hard drive (no dot pulsing in the spyglass), then there might be something wrong.
Start by booting into the Recovery HD (a partition created with Lion that has Disk Utility and reinstallation options) by holding down cmd-r when you restart. You can let go when the gray screen appears.
When it boots, select Disk Utility and Repair the drive.
If that doesn't speed things up, try re-installing the OS from the same Recovery HD. It won't delete any of your files, but it has helped some people whose Macs ran slow after installing Lion.
Also, how much memory do you have? Lion needs RAM so maxing your Mac out might also help. -

I currently have Snow Leopard and am thinking of upgrading to Lion but have heard some bad things about it. Should I upgrade or not? What do you like/dislike about Lion?
It is indeed all down to what you need to do with your machine. Snow leopard is an excellent OS and as Baltwo suggests you have to check out your current apps and programs because PPC won't work on any higher OS than the one you have.
Andy's comment is very interesting and, I suspect, insider knowledge based Certainly I would wait for Mavericks now it is on the horizon ... and then add six months or so for the bugs to be ironed out.

Iif you bought it from the UAE or other middle eastern country, facetime is blocked at the hardware level and can never be installed.

CD/DVD Drive Not working on iMac using Snow Leopard
Can anyone help me with a possible solution as to why my CD/DVD Drive on my iMac (running Snow Leopard 10.6.8) has suddenly stopped recognizing any inserted discs?
It makes a noise - as if it's trying to read them - but then ejects them! Although my iMac is quite old, the actual CD/DVD Drive was only replaced a couple of years ago!

sometimes it helps. You can also try a cleaning disc or blowing some compressed air into the mechanism to get rid of any dust that may be affecting it. The bottom line is that the slot loading SuperDrive, mounted sideways and exposed to the heat generated inside an imac, just doesn't last long. Xquery Problem for for takes really long time
I am having problems with an issue using doing an xml xQuery from Oxygen to a dbxml database.
I can't list the code because it is quite detailed and on a secure computer, but the concept is simple.
I have an xquery that looks like this:
Bunch of let statements
<results>
Let $y := "one"
For $thing in $list_of_things
More let statements
Where ....
Return
Html and more embedded xquery expressions including for, where etc.
</results>
I run a query with $y := "one" as above and it takes 1.5 seconds.
If I modify the query slightly by replacing the "let $y := "one" with an additional "for" it takes 250 seconds, though the results are the same as before.
Why did it take so long?
All I did was add the for which only has one item in it so it should do the same thing?!

Thanks for any help anyone can offer, CurtCurt, perhaps you'd need to provide a bit more relevant detail and in simpler form in order to get a helpful answer. On the face of it, changing let to for in that position might have an impact simply because you are changing a simple variable assignment followed by a for clause to a nested for...for clause. Is your "one" value a dummy for demonstration purposes or the actual value in your code? On the face of it, it looks like for each loop of the first for, you'd be repeating the execution of all the subsequent code. Without more context it's difficult to judge what would happen exactly.
I suspect that if it's XQuery you're needing help with you'll get more responses on a dedicated forum. For help with DBXML performance issues you're probably going to need to tell people about your indices and be more explicit about their relationship to your query, in order for them to understand the problem.
If that's not helpful just review your code again and continue experimenting.

I am looking to upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion . I currently use Snow Leopard and have an old iMac desktop the Apple ID in the computer says it's iMac 4,1. I am pretty sure this will not meet the system requirements for Mountain Lion but I want to make sure. If it doesn't meet the system requirements what are my options? Hopefully it's not buy a new desktop.

You have an Early 2006 iMac, and this Mac isn't compatible with Lion or Mountain Lion. That's because your computer has got a Intel Core Duo processor, and Lion and Mountain Lion requires a Intel Core 2 Duo processor or later because they are 64-bit operating systems.
Your options are to keep it with Snow Leopard (Snow Leopard is still supported by Apple and it receives some security OS X updates) or to buy a new computer with Mountain Lion
