Does my Mac Mail account have to be configured as an IMAP account

Need to know if I have to configure my iMac Mail accont for IMAP? Using AT&T Yahoo as my service provider. Thanks...KCB

It depends if your email provider supports POP or IMAP. Contact with Yahoo to know if you can use IMAP. You have th steps to do that > http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/mobile/mail/imap-01.html

This sounds like the age old problem with keychain & Safari. I don't know of a way to solve it without using something like 1Password.
The iOS app has it's own built in browser, so it has more control over what gets autofilled. Safari on OS X has an 1Password extension that handles account selection & autofill etc.
Keychain is great in principle, but it quickly falls down when you need tight integration with many ID's & different use cases (work, home etc).
I'd suggest you submit feedback to Apple about your thoughts. I did so years ago about this issue & this is how far we have come (back to the point where me.com synced passwords) :^)
    http://apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Other tools like lastpass or keypassx may also help if you want to truly segregate password storage, but that doesn't fix autofill, the way around that issue is to dedicate one browser for work.

Try unmounting the volume on your iMac using Disk Utility. Then mount it again. You may need to reboot the laptop or relaunch its Finder process (using the Force Quit window) after remounting the drive on your iMac. Remember that no process may be accessing any files on the drive you plan to unmount, or the unmount will fail. Unmounting and remounting an external drive on my iMac made it become visible on my MacBook Pro after it had disappeared.

  • My Mac Mail constantly asks for our passwords before opening our accounts.  New iMac with OSX Maverick

My Mac Mail constantly asks for our passwords before opening our accounts.  New iMac with OS x Maverick.  We get messages such as " Mail can't connect.  Appears to be offline due to network problems." or "The connection to the server (null) in port ) timed out."  I have confirmed server connections OK with Cox Communication and our Cox Webmail accounts.

    Hi Bob13524,
Man, that definitely sounds frustrating! And it sounds like this issue is occurring with several accounts, so let’s see if we can troubleshoot this. The following resource provides some great information for troubleshooting Mail issues, including information on using the Connection Doctor:

  • Mac mail suddenly refuses to include one of my aol accounts that i have had forever

I have 3 aol accounts that Mac mail has always supported Now it refuses (rejects) one of them. This happened all of a sudden.  Nothing I did changed it, and nothing I do now will repair it. I have taken ALL accounts Offline and then brought them back ONline, and that didn't work.

See what Mail/Window/Connect Doctor is showing. If you get a red server, select it and check the Show Details box.

You can also try deleting the account and adding it back.

  • Configure ipage domain imap account with mac mail client

I have a new website with ipage and would like to configure my new domain imap email on my mac mail client. Neither Apple nor Ipage support have been able to resolve why the outgoing server will not send messages. All variations of settings have been tried. I think it may be an SSL issue, but whichever, it must be possible to set up such an account. Anyone? Please?

    Shootist007,
I too loaded sparrow and it did seem to work fine with my (multiple) Gmail accounts and the folder/labels looked great (they do allow you to separate your inboxes/labels) with just a keystroke??---What I found was their HELP files were as MINIMAL as their program (fine for the more experienced I am sure)
I spent several hours!!! trying to figure out how to move the inbox messages to the (FOLDERS)??? I gave up!!
IF ANYONE KNOWS THE STEPS FOR DOING THIS I may well try the program again as it did seem to behave with Gmail/multiple accounts/personal domain quite well!
I will download thunderbird and give it a go in the morning
    Thanks for the quick response!

  • Why does my Mac Mail programme keep turning on the SSL option?

For a couple of years now my wife's Mac Mail programme has from time to time stopped getting most of the emails sent to it for a week or more. I've wasted many hours on the phone to our service provider without ever getting to the bottom of the problem. Now I believe I know what's been happening. It seems that her Mail preferences keep turning on the SSL option without any human involvement. Apparently emails sent to an SSL selected email address will only make it into her in-box if they come from an SSL selected mail programme. Yesterday, scratching my head as to why, once again, few emails were getting through, I once again looked at the preferences and noticed that the SSL option, which I had recently unchecked, was once again checked. I unchecked it. It immediately re-checked itself. I unchecked it. It immediately re-checked itself. And so on, for ten minutes when, suddenly, it remained unchecked.
Why is this happening? My wife never, and I mean never fiddles with settings on her computer and nobody else uses it. The checking of the SSL option is being done entirely at the behest of the machine itself. Can anybody tell me how this could be happening? And could anybody tell me how I can stop it from happening again?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Why does my guest account have the same apps as my regular account?

    How do I prevent this?

    telephonedude98 wrote:
So let's say I have an account logged into Messages, the standard/guest account will not see my account logged into Messages on the standard/guest account?
No, they won't see your messages. To review how this works:
No other account can see anything you are doing. It doesn't matter what level they are. Similarly, you cannot see the documents and activity in any other account, unless you use your Administrator powers to enter their accounts.
The difference between Guest/Standard and Administrator is that Administrator can change the configuration of the computer. If you are the Administrator, you can install and uninstall apps, and you can change network settings, account passwords, etc. but Guest and Standard cannot.
User accounts were designed as if there were walls between them. If you are logged into Messages and another user is also logged into Messages, when you open Messages you only see the communications associated with your Apple ID, and they only see the communications associated with their Apple ID. The entire concept of accounts is to prevent the info of different users from being mixed up together.
The only way someone would see your documents is if you stored them in a folder above the level of your account Home folder.
    It works like this:
Hard Drive / Users / YourAccountName / Home (Only you can see in here)
Hard Drive / Users / User1AccountName / Home (Only User2 can see in here)
Hard Drive / Users / User2AccountName / Home (Only User2 can see in here)
Hard Drive / Users / Shared / (everyone can see in here)
Hard Drive / (everyone can see this level)
The reason you can only see your messages is that your Messages account info is stored in
    Hard Drive / Users / YourAccountName / Home / Library / Messages
Another user would only see the Messages account info is stored in
    Hard Drive / Users / User1AccountName / Home / Library / Messages
(The Library folder is hidden by default. To see it, Option-click the Go menu in the Finder.)
It is very important to understand how accounts work, because the way it works on the Mac is the same way it works in Windows, and Unix, and just about any other professional operating system you will run into.
If you were to log in and out of different user accounts (as with the Fast User Switching feature in the Mac or Windows), you'd see that as you switch between accounts, each account looks like a completely different computer and can't see what's in the other accounts.

  • Why can I not access ICloud mail on Mac Mail anymore.  When I reopen a new ICloud account, the "incoming server" box is gray and I cannot enter anything.   This happened the 3-4 times I attempted to start a new icloud account?

Was getting ICloud mail then it stopped.   Icons next to ICloud on my mac mail say it's a netweork error.   I tried deleting the iCloud account several times and reentering it but it always leaves out the info that goes into the "incoming server" box and there is no way to manually enter it as the box is grayed out.

Sign out of iCloud (system preference>iCloud) reboot and sign back in.

  • Mac Mail Constantly Downloading thousands of messages from Gmail IMAP

    Hello,
I have seen similar problems posted, but no real solutions.  I use Google apps +(and regular gmail) and like to keep copies of my messages saved locally on my Macbook.  When I setup an IMAP account in Mac Mail ver 4.6, it downloads the messages fine, but then constantly keeps 'updating' and downloading more messages - the status indicates x number of messages out of 20,000+
This eats up my hard drive space very quickly!
    Any solutions?
    Much appreciated!

  • Mail.app and purging of moved messages with IMAP accounts?

I REALLY want to like Mail.app but one item that has caused frustration for years is the handling (or lack) of handling of my messages once moved to another folder with IMAP accounts. I would like for Mail.app to purge/expunge the messages from the server automatically when the message is moved but it doesn't seem to complete that transaction until you actually quit out of mail.
I use multiple computers and I don't remember to quit out of Mail.app going from one of my Macs to another and don't want to but I'm getting tired of having to file the messages twice (or more). Is there a way to set Mail.app to do the automatic instant purging (or expunging) of the messages from the originating folders without having to quit out of the application? This seems to be the default behavior for nearly every other mail client I've used, including Entourage and is an option in Outlook and Outlook Express (PC).

same is true with popmail, not just imap.
moreover, i think hitting "remove now" just puts content in your server's trash folder, meaning it's still taking up disk quota and you'll never know till you stop getting mail...

  • Does my Mac need to have the OS5 to get iOS5 on my ipod touch? I plugged my ipod in, have the 10.5 version of itunes but not getting the update on my ipod.

I am trying to get the iOS5 on my ipod touch. iTunes says I have the latest updates (10.5). My Mac does not have the iOS5. Do I need to get iOS5 for my computer before I can get the benefits on my ipod touch?

If you have a 3G iPod it may really be a 2G iPod. If it is 8 or 16 GB it is a 2G iPod.  Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods. A 32 GB one can be either. To identify ours see:

  • My Mac Mail is assigning someone else's name to my account.

One of my OLD client's names is getting assigned to my email address somehow!
Many people have let me know that when they receive and email from me my name shows as this other lady's. VERY strange. The people who I am sending the email to do not have any clue who the other person is. I'm not sure if it only happens when I email a gmail account or something like that, because it doesn't happen every time. I haven't been able to figure it out. I've checked everything in the Mail > Preferences  and also searched my computer to see if her name came up on anything else. She is not in my contacts list, I've deleted my email account and set it back up and I'm still unable to figure this out!
This is confusing my other clients and not making me look very professional. If anyone has any advice for how to fix this PLEASE let me know.

It sounds like Mail isn't accepting your changes for some reason.
I don't have a Mavericks machine available so I can't do too much double-checking for places where it would be pulling the name.
I would remove the account from Mail (delete it) and re-add it. You may want to post over in the Mavericks forum, too, as someone there may have more troubleshooting ideas.
