Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac work with OSX Server?

Hi There
I wonder if I should install OSX Server on an iMac wher several users work on the same files and folders.
My question - before I do something I might regret:
Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac within several users really work with the help of OSX Server?
All I want to be able to do:
Admin creates a new folder1 and gives it read- and write access for user1 and user2.
User1 creates a subfolder1 in folder1, and a document1 in subfolder1.
User2 edits document1. Later Admin edits document1.
All these simple editing of files and folders (and subfolders) within a main folder should be possible. This is not possible now.
Is everything clear? I'm not a network specialist or something, I just want to give some co-workers access to some data on my computer without problems.

So what you need are recursive permissions.
I suggest you create a group and add user1 and user2 to that group. You can name that group whatever you want, but for now i will call it FSUsers
Execute this in terminal. Replace FSUsers with your new group
sudo chmod -R +a "FSUsers allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextat tr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/*
Replace /Users/Shared with the location of your shared folder. Make sure you keep the /* at the end (this allows all subfolders and files to get the same permissions.
If you need to add people to the share just add them to the FSUsers group, the FSUsers group should should also be allowed in the sharing preferences.

  • File and folder sharing and permissions.

Many times when we copy files or folders to another mac computer, their permissions change, and many times the new user can not open it, until the file or folder permissions are changed. It start happen with MacOX 10.5, and still is happening with 10.7, with 10.5 we were waiting for the patch, but it never arrived, then I think is not a mistake for apple software developers??. But how can I solve this issue? the people need to interchage files and folders by USB, or network, and need to work as soon as possible with that materials and not loose time changing permissions. Someone knows what can I do to solve it?

Did you log out of one account and into the other or just used Fast user switching?
Is the permissions set to anyone?
When you move data to teh Shared folder is it copied or just moved?
If copied then it's not a folder both can access, just a way station like a USB thumb drive that things are coped too and off of likely.
You can run this #5 on each user account to reset the user permissions once they are taken back out of the Shared folder

  • File and Printer Sharing

Running XpHomeSp2. Just purchased a WRT150N to replace a failing SMC wireless router. Was able to share files and printers before replacement, now cannot. Microsoft Windows Network recognizes Local network by name after long, slow delay, but does not list any computers or shared locations or devices there when access attempted from main computer, but, oddly, list is possible from another network computer, but only the shares it offers to the network are accessible.
Only difference between now and prior is the router and that WPA security is invoked. Access is not granted when security is disabled. Have found no support for this issue anywhere. Also now note that Xp no longer lists Simple File Sharing in Folder Options, not that I'd used it in original sharing setup.
Anyone experiencing similar issues able to offer resolution?

Your computer software firewall may be blocking the file and printer sharing. It was for me. You changed from a 'Trusted' network physical address to a new network physical address. Go into your software firewall 'Trust' settings and change the new address to 'Trusted'.
I had previously just disabled the firewall. Apparently that's not totally effective.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem with file and printer sharing

I just installed a Linksys WRT54G to replace a D-Link wireless router and cannot reestablish my file and printer sharing since replacing the router.  I had file and printer sharing working fine before installing the WRT54G.   All of the computers are running either XP Pro or 2000 Pro.  I have two printers attached to one of my computers that I was previously sharing with all of the other computers on our home network.  One is attached via a parallel port, the other via a USB port.
Here's what I've tried so far without success.
    1.  The IP of the WRT54G is 192.168.1.1, and the IP's it assigns to my LAN computers begin 192.168.1.XXX.  The old IP of the D-Link was 192.168.0.1 and its LAN IPs were 192.168.0.XXX, so I've gone into my firewall and changed the settings for the range of trusted computers to correspond to the WRT54G's IP addresses.
    2.   I've tried uninstalling the printers and reinstalling them, including reinitializing printer sharing.
    3.  When I try to use the Windows  "Add printer" wizard to add a networked printer, it can see the computer that has the printers attached, but it does not see the printers.
    4.  I haven't fooled around with the file sharing settings, but they've all be lost too, so I suspect there is a common problem for both printer and file sharing.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.  I don't know what would be different about the WRT54G that would cause this problem.

Try this to Enable File and Printer Sharing...Turn Off the Router Firewall...Make sure the Windows Firewall is also Off...

  • File and folder permissions for Adobe Photoshop CS5

    Good day,
I am an IT specialist and I work for a Canadian governement agency and we are having an issue with Photoshop CS5. After successfully installing Photoshop CS5 from the Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium set(using a local machine administrator account), Photoshop crashes immidiatly after launching it(even with the local administrator account). The exact error message is as follows:
The instruction at "0x230dad8dc" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
I know this is an environement issue and not an application or hardware issue since I was able to successfully install and run Adobe Photoshop CS5 on a plain vanilla install of Windows SP3 XP on the same model of workstation(HP DC7800). This later also confirms it is not a RAM or video adapter issue either. My experience tells me it would be more related to file/folder permissions on the workstation(although I'm open to other suggestions).  Because we are a governement agency, our workstations have machine and user policies and desktop configurations that get applied to the workstations automatically upon joining our domain via GPOs and SMS. Certain system files and folder permissions may be locked down for security reasons therefor I was wondering is someone has a list of files and folders that Adobe CS5 needs access to upon startup in order to properly function?
If anyone would like more details or information please let me know and I'll try to be more specific.
Thanks in advance to all who take the time to read and help out!

I appreciate that you're trying to surmise what's different, and it's good that you have had success with similar/identical hardware.  At least you know it can work.
However, I wouldn't bet just yet that it's a permissions issue.  I'd think you should get a specific error if a locked-down file needed to be accessed, not a null pointer crash.  The Photoshop installer should be setting up the proper permissions on its own files for it to run.
Is it exactly the same video card as the other computer, on which Photoshop works?
Are you sure the video drivers are up to date with the same version as on the other computer?
At exactly what point during startup does the failure occur (i.e., is the splash screen showing, and what does the status line in the splash screen say it's doing)?

  • Prevent using special characters in file and folder names?

I've recently begun adding windows clients to my network. In doing so, I've found that on my file shares from OS X server, the windows clients are unable to see files and folders which have names containing special characters such as / ? < > \ : * | ”
Unfortunately my accounting department has been creating files with these characters in their names for several years. I would like to find if there is a way to prevent them from using a defined set of characters in the file and folder names to prevent them from "accidentally" doing so in the future.
I've found that by turning off streams support on SMB in OS X server, that my windows clients can at least see that a file or folder should exist, albeit with a corrupted file name. Removing the special characters from these names allows the proper name to become visible and the file accessible.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

PS: basically it's not a url encoding issue.
    I can url encode "ça alors: it's a déjà-vu",
and pass it in a url query string. But my issue is not
with an url query string, it's with an actual URL, that is,
the actual name of the directory. It
    can't be "ça alors: it's a déjà-vu". But I
want to allow the user to name their directory like that
if they want. So I need a way to encode this into characters
that can be used for an actual
    directory on the server.

  • Lenovo Thinkvantage Access Connections prevents Microsoft File and Printer Sharing

We have several Think pad laptops deployed in our company, including G41, T61, and T500 models.  We are using Numara's Track It software to inventory our workstations and laptops.  The auditing process needs to have Microsoft File and Printer Sharing turned on in order to work.  We have enabled a group policy to set this to on by default.  However, the Thinkavntage Access connections manager for the LAN connection overrides the GP and turns off the File and Printer Sharing by default.  What's worse, with it off, we can't remotely manage the machine's services or even access the registry.  We know that his is the issue, because reconfiguring the access connections manager to allow the file and printer sharing will allow all of our remote administration tools to work, insluding the inventory audit.
Does anyone know how to disable the access connection manager from running remotely?  or does anyone know how to change the settings remotely to all for the microsoft file and printer sharing to be enabled by default.  I would hate to have to visit each user individually just to turn off a setting.
anyone else run into headaches because of this "security feature"?

  • Windows 7 GPO Script - Enable file and printer sharing

    Hello,
I'm trying to activate the Advanced File and Network sharing bia script (as there is no GPO option to do this)
    The script is simple :
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="File and Printer Sharing" new enable=Yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="network discovery" new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall set currentprofile state on
in .bat and .ps1 it works fine when logged in to a computer with admin rights. I want to run this script on the computer level via GPO. The GPO applies properly, but the settings aren't changed. Any ideas on getting this to work?
    Environment is the following :
    DC is WinServ 2008 R2, test machines : Win 7 Pro x64
Test OU with Inheritance disabled, GPO for testing enforced with no other parameters apart from this Computer Startup script. User and Computer account are in the Test OU.
gpresult shows the GPO is applied, but no data is available under Computer or User configuration. the script is stored in the correct sysvol location.

  • X301 "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" removed at re booting (XP SP-3)

Even if I run the “Network Identification Wizard” (under System properties/Computer Name) to join a Workgroup, the box ‘File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks’ remains unchecked.  If I ticked it manually, it remains checked for the current session, but it is unchecked at booting.
The same occurs with the Windows Firewall (I am running that from Symantec). I switch the Windows Firewall off, but after rebooting, it appears selected again!.
This happens only with my brand new ThinkPad X301, which came with Vista. The package included a kit to convert to XP, but this installed a ‘naked’ XP, which required downloading from Lenovo and Windows about 1Gb of files (bad service, Lenovo guys!).
I wonder which “safety” issue of the X301 causes this, but how can I stop this happening? (It does not occur with any of my two old ThinkPads, also running XP SP-3 and Lenovo software).
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

See -> http://www.vistax64.com/vista-networking-sharing/72537-file-printer-sharing-turned-off-reboot.html  Here is the text. Re: File and Printer sharing turned off on reboot
    I FOUND MY SOLUTION!!!
In my case, it was in Lenovo's "ThinkVantage Access Connections" applet. It
is additional security that is applied at the CONNECTION level.
Here is how I fixed it:
    1. Double click on the ThinkVantage Access Connections applet in the
    notification area.
    2. Click on the MANAGE button on the toolbar
    3. Select the SSID where you want File Sharing to work, and click EDIT
    4. Click on the ADDITIONAL SETTINGS tab
    5. Next to "Network Security", click the SETTINGS button
    6. The first option in Security Settings is "Disable file and printer
sharing". UNCHECK this box. Click OK for 3 levels of dialog boxes, then
    close Access Connections
Although these directions are specific to ThinkPad notebooks, the same
principle may apply for other manufacturers' connection managers.
    Best of luck!

  • Mac CAN't Cut files and folder???

    i'm new Mac user!
My Mac CAN't Cut files and folder! is it normal? just copy, then delete orig.
or use drag with OPT key. But i can't use CMD+X or CUT in EDIT menu.

I have been having the same problem, and thought it was just me. Had the same problem with deleting files/folders in Finder...till I found you have to hold the cmd key down while deleting.
Was hoping there was a keyboard shortcut for copy as well.
Really infuriating, what would be a CMD-X, move mouse, CMD-V operation becomes a copy, navigate to new folder/move to new window, paste, go back to other window, re select and delete operation.
My work around is to use Windows Explorer in unity mode in VMWareFusion if I am doing any major search/move/cut operations.
Saves having to have multiple windows open/going back/forwards, between them.
I did see a terminal hack that enabled the CMD-X keyboard shortcut....but it just deletes to the Trash Bin and does not actually paste the items back.
Can understand the reasons nerowolfe states, but that does not stop it from being b**y annoying

  • How to check if file and printer sharing is on or off

    Hi,
i want to evaluate if the windows file and printer-sharing is turned on or not with a script.
With regshot i found out that the DLL hgclp.dll is involved but not which registry-entry is the one set.

i know it should be but on some machine it is not the case even if the domain-bind etc is fine.
Manual workaround is to look at each one by hand and set it to enabled. Gpupdate does not change something in these cases.
If i had a way to validate this setting via script it'd be faster.

  • Fix for WRT54G file and printer sharing

I have two computers, both connected via wireless. They were connected with a 2 year old Linksys router, that was working great, but got destroyed in a move.
    I purchased a new linksys WRT54G router.
Symptoms were that both had great access to the internet, but I could not file and print share between them.
After 5 phone calls into tech support, I finally escallated to a senior tech support guy, who had me turn off the firewall.
I have McAfee firewall. I diabled the firewall for testing, and it all worked instantly.
So, I went to McAfee personal Firewall, Options on bottom left, and set a trusted range of ip addresses from 192.168.1.0 through 192.168.1.255, then turned the firewall back on. On my computer, I already had the policy of "trust devices on the local network", but for some reason that wasn't good enough.
For some reason, the McAfee does not like the new router. I know there are a BUNCH of posts on this forum, and other forums, and I would hate for Linksys to become known as not being a great product.
The first level tech support at Linksys told me "we do not support file and print sharing." I had to keep escallating to finally reach someone that understood the router SHOULD pass packets back and forth.
I never thought of the firewall.
Also, you have to adjust the firewall on every computer that you want to share devices or files off of.

Do any experts know the reason of this problem?  Thanks!

  • QTSS file and folder permissions

I am having a lot of problems getting QTSS and QTSS Publisher working correctly. I think this may be due to file and folder permissions. Does anyone know what the correct ownership and access settings should be for the folders containing my quicktime files?
    Thanks.

Try setting the ownership and permissions of those files to the ones mentioned on the end of this page, which are: owner: qtss, group: admin, permissions for owner and group: Read & Write, and Read only for others.
