Doubt handling Clob columns with Java JDBC api

Hi,
we have a doubt handling Clob columns with Java JDBC api.
Reading Oracle 10g official documentation (document b10979.pdf, page 236), we found this note:
============================================
To write LOB data, the application must acquire a write lock on the LOB object. One way to accomplish this is through a SELECT FOR UPDATE. Also, disable auto-commit mode.
============================================
We also found a java sample code about how to handle Lob objects at this URL:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/sample_code/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/files/advanced/LOBSample/LOBSample.java.html
In our java2 application, we access Clob objects in a quite different
manner: we use normal setString() and getString() methods, as described into paragraph "Shortcuts For Inserting and Retrieving CLOB Data"
(document b10979.pdf, page 244).
Using those methods, we never lock the table row by a SELECT FOR UPDATE statement (as described into the note above). We use simply SELECT, UPDATE and INSERT prepared statement.
In this way we can insert both clob objects and normal timestamp, number and other types with a single insert statement. Idem for update.
To recap, our question is:
Is it mandatory to create a SELECT FOR UPDATE statement when updating clob data? What may be the consequences if we don't use it? It is also correct to insert with a single sql statement both clob and not clob data using the setString() method for the clob types? And more than one lob column in the same record?
bye,
luca acri.

And columns of type FLOAT. These also have, for some unknown reason a metadata type of OTHER, and a type string of 'FLOAT'. Yet PreparedStatement.setNull(x, Types.OTHER) doesn't work and setNull(x, Types.DECIMAL) does.

  • [End of TNS data channel] with Java SDO API (JDBC thin 9.0.1.2.1)

    Hello folks,
    Environment:
    Win2K, 1.2GHz Intel, 500MB RAM, Oracle 9i, Oracle JDBC Thin (9.0.1.2.1), JDK1.3
    Our data in the DB is 2-D. It consists of SDO LineString geometries. We use SRID = 8307.
    I run into this problem with Java SDO API. I got this exception: "Io exception: End of TNS data channel"
    when I try to execute query that uses the SDO_RELATE function:
    SELECT e.shape
    FROM edge e
    WHERE SDO_RELATE(e.shape,
    mdsys.sdo_geometry( 2003, 8307, NULL,
    mdsys.sdo_elem_info_array(1,1003,1),
    mdsys.sdo_ordinate_array(-125.8,49.9,-125.6,49.9,-125.6,50.0,-125.8,50.0,-125.8,49.9) ),
    'mask=ANYINTERACT querytype=WINDOW') = 'TRUE'
    If I use SDO_FILTER instead of SDO_RELATE it works!
    Here is how I execute the query in Java:
    public int executeSpatialQuery(OracleConnection conn, String spatialQuery) throws Exception
    int numberOfGeometries = 0;
    conn.setDefaultRowPrefetch(1000);
    Statement ps = conn.createStatement();
    ResultSet rs = ps.executeQuery(spatialQuery);
    while (rs.next()) {
    numberOfGeometries++;
    rs.close();
    ps.close();
    return numberOfGeometries;
    Note: I was playing with the "conn.setDefaultRowPrefetch(n)" method hoping that there might be something to do with that but with no success.
    Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.

    Hello folks,
    Here is what I've done:
    1. Created a "mini" Realtional model (modelB) which mimics exactly our existing "big" Realtional model (modelA). The tables, sequences, indices, etc. in modelB have been created in exactly the same fashion we'd created the corresponding entities in modelA. The only difference is that I preceeded the entities in our test modelB with "TEST_".
    2. Populated the modelB with 1298 Lakes (3993 edges in total) in exatly the same fashion we use to populate our modelA - using a Data Loader based on Java SDO API.
    3. Indexed the test modelB in exactly the same fashion as modelA.
    4. Ran the query:
    SELECT e.shape FROM test_edge e WHERE SDO_RELATE(e.shape,
    mdsys.sdo_geometry(
    2003,
    8307,
    NULL,
    mdsys.sdo_elem_info_array(1,1003,1),
    mdsys.sdo_ordinate_array(
    -123.80833332065798,48.58352678668598,
    -123.80833332065798,48.675352618459506,

    -123.65050767229724,48.58352678668598,
    -123.80833332065798,48.58352678668598
    ), 'mask=ANYINTERACT querytype=WINDOW'
    ) = 'TRUE'
    in SQL*PLUS and it worked fine (retrieved a bunch of geometries)!
    Ran the same query in the Daniel Geringer's OraTest utility and it worked this time and returned:
    TIME : 1.222 seconds, TOTAL FETCH TIME 267 ROWS
    Ran the query with our JCS Query Plug-In and it worked fine!

    it SUCCESSFULLY returns the related geometries!
    So, what can we make of all this? We know that there exists a model for which the SDO_RELATE works via the Java SDO API. This model is a subset (w.r.t. the data set) of our original model in which we detected the "TNS end of communication channel problem". The environment we used for these tests is exactly the same: JDBC Thin driver (version 9.0.1.0.0), Oracle9i Enterprise Edition (Release 9.0.1.2.1 - Production).
    One can think that the problem lies in the Oracle Object-Realational or Oracle Spatial but the fact that we can successfully execute the same SDO_RELATE queries in SQL*PLUS rejects this possibility. Perhaps it depends on the amount of data passed to the JDBC driver and the fashion in which it handles it! In our test above we had RELATED 267 geometries. We know that there exist SDO_RELATE queries that run successfully with modelA, but those are queries which ONLY retrieve an EMPTY set of RELATED geometries. In other words we don't get the "TNS end of communication channel" because NO data gets fetched from the server to the client! As soon as we find a SDO_RELATE query which retrieves (RELATES) at least 1 geometry that runs successfully in SQL*PLUS and run it via the Java SDO API - it FAILS! This means that no matter what volume of data is fetched from the server-JDBCThin-SDOAPI-client as long as there is ANY data, the query FAILS in modelA.
    Perhaps something internally in the Oracle 9i Server happens that prevent the data being fetch to the JDBCThin for that particular modelA. But what that might be?
    Very peculiar problem!

    Georgi

  • Problems with Java Scripting API

    Hello Everyone!
    Guys, I need help with Java scripting API. A problem is that I cannot understand how can I operate Java Object's fields and methods from the script language. I have chosen embedded javascript to work with. And I can get the fields and methods of in-box java classes (such as ArrayList for example), but I cannot work with methods and fields from my own classes!
    Here is an example:
    public class ScriptingExample {
        class MyClass {
            int myfield = 5;
            int getInt() {return 7;}
        public void runExample() {
            ScriptEngineManager mgr = new ScriptEngineManager();
            List<ScriptEngineFactory> factories = mgr.getEngineFactories();
            ScriptEngineManager factory = new ScriptEngineManager();
            ScriptEngine engine = factory.getEngineByName("JavaScript");
            MyClass mc = new MyClass();
            try{
                engine.put("mc", mc);
                engine.eval("print(mc.myfield); print(mc.getInt())"); // or engine.eval("print(mc.myfield)");
            } catch (Exception e) {e.printStackTrace();}
    }  If I run the code with the commented part it prints "undefined" instead of "5".
    If I run the code as it is it prints error instead of "7":

    How can I fix it?

    Guys,
    please let me raise this topic because several new questions emerged.
    (1) How can I get all the variables created inside my engine?
    There are two kinds of variables: first kind is Java obejcts put inside the engine and second kind is the variables created in my script, such as 'var a = 4;'. How can I list all the variables of that two kinds?
    (2) Is there is a way to make 'import static' to the engine? I dont want to write MyClass.MyEnum.MyEnumItem every time. Also, I cannot put the whole enum into the engine with engine.put("MyEnum", MyEnum); I can put only enum items separately: engine.put("MyEnum", MyEnum.EnumItemA);. Thats why I ask about static import.
    (3) How can I cast engine variables back to java variables inside my java code?
    Here is my example:
    package mypackage;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    import java.util.List;
    import javax.script.ScriptEngine;
    import javax.script.ScriptEngineFactory;
    import javax.script.ScriptEngineManager;
    public class Main
         public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
              ScriptEngineManager mgr = new ScriptEngineManager();
              List<ScriptEngineFactory> factories = mgr.getEngineFactories();
              ScriptEngineManager factory = new ScriptEngineManager();
              ScriptEngine engine = factory.getEngineByName("JavaScript");
              ArrayList<Double> myList = new ArrayList<Double>();
              myList.add(5.0);
              engine.put("MyList", myList);
              engine.eval("MyVar = MyList.get(0);");
              System.out.println((Double)engine.get("MyVar"));
    }The result is:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: sun.org.mozilla.javascript.internal.NativeJavaObject cannot be cast to java.lang.Double
    +     at mypackage.Main.main(Main.java:28)+
    Is it possible to retrieve my Double java object from the engine?

  • How can i create messenger with java tv API on STB

    deal all.
    how can i create messenger with java tv API on STB.
    how can Xlets communicate each other?
    how?
    i am interested in xlet communications with java tv.
    is it impossible or not?
    help all..

    You can create a messenger-style application using JavaTV fairly easily. JavaTV supports standard java.net, and so any IP-based connection is pretty easy to do. The hard part of the application will be text input, but people have been using cellphone keypads to send SMS messages for long enough that they're familiar with doing this. This doesn't work well for long messages, where you really need a decent keyboard, but for short SMS-type messages it's acceptable.
    The biggest problem that you need to work around is the return channel. Many receivers only have a dial-up connection, ties up the phone line and potentially costs people money if they don't get free local calls. Always-on return channels (e.g. ADSL or cable modem) are still pretty uncommon, so it's something that you nee to think about. Of course, if you do have an always-on connection then this problem just goes away.
    This is really one of those cases that's technically do-able, but the infrastructure may not be there to give users a good experience.
    Steve.

  • Trying to connect to Sybase with Java jdbc

    Hoping someone can help me to connect to Sybase database (version is Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 12.5.3). I am using a technique I read that worked with Access and adapting by some examples for Syabase I found on the web but keep getting errors. Below is my code with some of the examples Ive been using commented out.
    I have created a DSN on my Windows Xp o/s named GPTS_SYBASE via ODBC Use DSN set-up wizard, driver is Sybase ASE ODBC Driver.
    import java.sql.*;
    public class DBConn {
    public DBConn(){
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    try {
    //Class.forName("com.sybase.jdbc2.jdbc.SybDriver.class.getname()");
    //Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
    Class.forName("com.sybase.jdbc2.jdbc.SybDriver");
    String sourceURL = "jdbc.odbc.GPTS_SYBASE";
    //String sourceURL = "jdbc.sybase.Tds:GPTSPSYB1:5000/gpts";
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(sourceURL, "gptsdbo", "gptsdbo");
    //Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(sourceURL);
    System.out.println("Success");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.err.println("Got an excpetion! ");
    System.err.println(e.getMessage());
    Error message from this code is
    Got an excpetion!
    com.sybase.jdbc2.jdbc.SybDriver

    Have you read the Sybase docs or the Java JDBC docs? ODBC != JDBC. They sound the same but are totally different. The DSN is totally irrelevant for type 4 JDBC drivers.
    It would help to actually print the stack trace by changing your code to:
    catch (Exception e) {
        System.err.println("Got an excpetion! ");
        e.printStackTrace();
    }Also, you're mixing the wrong class name with the URL. You need "com.sybase.jdbc2.jdbc.SybDriver" and, in your case jdbc:sybase:Tds:GPTSPSYB1:5000/gpts - note the change to colons, not periods! - when in doubt read the docs!

    I know there was a problem in 6i where you would get a crash if your query returned more than {Max Length} characters of the field representing the CLOB column.

  • How to handle fieldnames ending with # in JDBC receiver?

    Hello Experts,
      I am developing a scenario JDBC to IDOC. I have 2 tables for  header & line item. I have to retrieve a header record first using sender JDBC & then for that header need to fetch the corresponding lineitems from second table.
        We cannot have data types defined in XI with fieldnames containing # or any other special charecter. Both DB tables contain fieldnames ending with #.
      For Sender JDBC, I managed it in SQL query using :
        Select abc, xyz# as xyz .... from tbname
    But for receiver JDBC we need to define a data type with the typical format ( Doccument format required for JDBC receiver).
    Please let me know how to handle this for JDBC receiver.
    Thanks in Advance & hope for a quick replies.
    Abhijeet.

    Hi Abhijeet,
    If you can write a query with join( you can call join query using JDBC adapter), i think this would be a fastest way and good approch rather than having 2 JDBC call.
    Another approch would be writing SP( stored procedure and then you can have your complete logic here). You can call SP using JDBC adapter.
    Eventhough query would be complex...it will be one time job.:)...I am not sure about data type for handling field names with special characters.
    Let me know if you need more details.

    session session1 = session.getInstance(properties, null);
    System gives an error Sourced file: inline evaluation of: ``Properties props = new Properties(); session session1 = session.getInstance(prop . . . '' : Typed variable declaration : Class: session not found in namespace

  • Extract specific value of a Clob column with multiple nodes,similar name

    Hi,
    There is a clob column in the table USER_DETAILS which hold the values similar to the one given below, i would like to form a query which should fetch the entire record where the age<30, as all the child nodes are with similar name i couldn't fetch it out using xmltype.extract. Also the order of the node values may change for eg. age may follow salary or age can be the first node in the list. Please help me to fetch the desired details.

    <value>20000</value>

    <value>12091980</value>
    </enter>

    Let's start with the easy part.
    Cells on a Numbers table can contain data entered directly, or can contain a formula. They can't contain both. That means you cannot 'type the conditions into a single cell' in column A ("the left header" cell) AND have a formula which sets that cell to TRUE if the typed in data contains an "A".
    There's no problem doing this using column A as the key holder and columns B:Z to hold the TRUE/FALSE results, staring in both cases on row 2.
    Here's an example
    The column header cells (row 1) contain the letter corresponding to that column.
    The row header cells (starting at row 2) contain the 'bunch of letters' you describe. Note (A4) that the letters do not have to be entered in any particular order, and that extraneous characters (eg. a space) are ignored.
    The formula shown is entered B2, and filled down and right from there.
    =IFERROR(FIND(B$1,$A2)>0,FALSE)
    FIND returns the position of the first occurrence of the target string (in this case, the single letter at the top of the column) in the search string, then compares that with the value zero. For any letter that is included in the search string, the find value will be at least 1, so the comparison will return TRUE. If the target letter is not found, FIND returns an error. IFERROR traps this and returns FALSE.
    Since the target depends on the letter at the top of the column, all that's needed to extend the range of possible letters to the full alphabet is to enter an A in cell B1, then run through the alphabet A to Z, with Z in cell AA1.
    Depending what you want to do with the TRUE or FALSE values in these 26 columns, it may be possible to skip the auxiliary column step and use a formula similar to the one above as the condition argument of an IF(condition,do-if-true,do-if-false) statement.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Problem with Java Communication API

    hi
    I installed the Java Communication API on win32 platform (as per the guidelines)
    Now when I try to run the sample program 'Blackbox' for the serial port, I get an error (in fact an exception is generated inside main function in BlackBox.class file)
    I tried the SimpleRead.java example but that too generated the same exception
    Can anybody help me out.... I am a novice with Java Comm API

    I tried running the sample BlackBox program provided for serial port and now it says
    No Serial Ports Found!
    I verified that both comm.jar and javax.comm.properties are in the <JDK>\lib directory.
    Actually, I am using netBeans IDE 1.4 and I used the C:\J2SDK folder installed with netBeans for the Java Communicaion API
    plz help.

  • Problem with java logging API

    Hi there
    It`s the first time I`m using (I have to use) the standard java logging API.
    My need is to integrate it in an existing web-application based on struts.
    So my first step was to include the following code into an Struts Action-class:
    FileHandler file = new FileHandler("/pathToLogFile/myLogFile.log",true);
    file.setFormatter(new SimpleFormatter());
    logger.info("create info");
    By intention is to have exactly one log-file for the whole application, but indeed I'm getting multiple log-files, even for each request of one and the same Action/Servlet class, like
    myLogFile.log
    myLogFile.log.1
    myLogFile.log.2
    myLogFile.log.3
    Why does using append=true not work in the constructor of "FileHandler"
    Do I have to close the FileHandler each time I've used it?
    Is this a known issue?
    Thanks for any responds!

    @ Stone.li
    First, thanks for your answer.
    perhaps my question was quite confusing .... but my need is just
    to establish the logging API in an existing Web-Application and to have exactly one log-file for the whole application. This means I would have to provide in each servlet a FileHandler referencing to the log-file. I thought it would be part of the job of the logging API to synchronise this file access.
