Downgrade RAW decoder? Aperture 3.3.2 Raw FAIL Pentax

I have had a huge issue since upgrading to 3.3.2 and the upgrade to the RAW decoder. I shoot Pentax platforms (K-7, K-200 & K-x). I only shoot RAW and this problem NEVER happened before the Aperture update/RAW update. I stop the automatic processing, otherwise, it goes through each photo and darkens and shift the colors significantly. If I open a previous library (ones I created even years ago) it will preprocess the master images AND all the subsequent versions - Thus I refuse to even open my old libraries for Aperture ruining my work.

Also, when Aperture "Processes" the image, it is clear it that it as a JPG master/original image. The data simply isn't there anymore to use adjustments like "recovery." When you try and do so, it just dulls/grays The entire image instead of adjusting the highlights.
I need to know where I can get previous version of the RAW engine and install it into Aperture. How can this be done?
Apple really screw this thing up...infuriating since it was working just fine before. My livelihood is on hold because the app I use and am bound to has turned form a pro tool to one of the iToy applications

Al lot of good questions. I actually got ahold of Apple and got one of the Aperture team memvers after a few transfers and they saw the problem too. They had me send a lot of info to them, including some of my test files from my camera.
To answer (most of) your questions:
Yes, i really looks like its applying some preset, doesn't it? But it's not as far as I can tell. It does the same thing on my iMac as it does in my BacBook Pro, so the same thing happen on two different installs. Hitting M shows no difference. And yes, it does show in the info that it is a PEF file. I even tried today to get some shots on DNG just to see if it made a difference..it didn't.
if I send the file out to export as an original/master--it get's strange. If I use Preview to look at it, it looks like it did in Aperture after the "Processing" gets ahold of it. If I pull it in to Photoshop, it retains its RAW image look and has none of the darkening/shift issues I see in Aperture. So its my opinion it is something to do with Apple's Camera RAW processor.
Changing the RAW settings in the RAW brick in Aperture doesn't seem to make a difference either.
Good news is Apple sees the issue and is working on it. I head overseas for a Photoshop in three weeks. Really hope they can figure this out. I tried installing an older version of Apple Camera RAW, but it fails to do so indicating every time there is a newer version installed already. If I knew how to uninstall or erase it (don't even know where the files are) I'd give that a try. No luck locating them so far.

    I converted to Aperture 2.0 and have a library of about 25k images. I have shot with a Nikon D100, D200 and D300 and have images from each in my library. I am pleased with the appearance of many of my images with RAW decode 1.0 and 1.1 so don't want to migrate my entire library to 2.0. I am able to convert some of my images to 2.0 with no problem. Several images, though, refuse to convert. When switching the decode from 1.0 to 1.1 or 2.0 or from 1.1 to 2.0, I get the spinning beach ball of death and have to force quit Aperture. Sometimes the image will convert when I restart Aperture and sometimes it won't. One image in particular was shot with my D100 and consistently causes Aperture to hang when changing the decode from 1.0 to 2.0.
    Any ideas on how to fix this problem and get that image to decode 2.0?

  • Aperture vs Adobe Camera Raw

    Hey,
    So, lately I've been shooting in RAW and have finally found some time to process some of the images. I am a Mac user, so I have the option of using either Aperture, or Adobe Camera Raw (Lightroom). Can someone please explain to me the main difference between the two programs, in terms of their ability to retouch/edit RAW images. I've had experience with Adobe Camera Raw (through photoshop cs6) and believe it is an excellent piece of software, does Aperture provide the same kind and quality of tools. The reason I am asking is because while I need a program to help process the RAW files, I also want to organize them in a library where I can see my edits. I am currently using iPhoto and I like the way it works.
    So to summarize the question, is aperture as good at processing/editing RAW images as Adobe Camera Raw? If not, why, what are the differences?

    Much of the difference between the two has to do with the way brushes work (for local adjustments) and some features.
    Brushes:
    In ACR, the adjustment brush works as a multi-parameter brush where you brush in strokes and can adjust quite a few parameters after adding the brush stroke (e.g., exposure, highlights, shadows, sharpening, noise reduction, clarity, saturation, etc.). ACR adds a 'pin' for each new adjustment which can then be selected to change the parameters of that adjustment.
    In Aperture, you use what is called a 'brick' which is a panel dedicated to the type of adjustment (e.g., enhance, highlights & shadows, edge sharpen, noise reduction, etc.). In this case, you use each 'brick' (or panel) to change the brushed in parameters for that specific type of adjustment.
    In summary; you can add or change more parameters in ACR with one brushed adjustment than you can in Aperture, but both can add or change the same parameters (with the exception of exposure, which Aperture doesn't currently do as a local brushable adjustment).
    ACR has arguably better sharpening and noise reduction control. ACR also has a gradient tool and lens distortion correction which Aperture currently lacks.
    I do find that brush speed is about the same with a lot of adjustments added, with Aperture getting better marks overall.
    All that said, I would be surprised if Aperture didn't receive some of the tools it currently lacks in the future.
    As far as RAW decoding goes, Aperture relies on the OS X camera RAW compatibility feature to render RAW files, so you will already have a sense of what that default render is like with iPhoto and Preview. Aperture can alter those parameters either as a RAW fine tuning preset that you create or with the adjustment bricks.
    FWIW, I have been using Adobe ACR at work (on Windows) since it's inception; and while I like the results with some images with regards to highlights, shadows, sharpening and noise, I can get there faster with Aperture. I also don't agree with Adobe's new rental policy for the CC line, so won't be investing in their products anymore. I quite like the 'App Store' paradigm.

  • Trying to understand RAW decoding of D700 in-camera processing

    I use Aperture 2 along with my Nikon D700 to manage and make minor edits to my pix (I know Phototshop well but use it sparingly). Though I believe I understand the benefits and theoretical underpinnings of RAW, until lately I've shot mostly JPEGs just for efficiency's sake and frankly just because I was a doofus too scared to make the leap. I now want to switch to a RAW workflow and I've been researching in that regard (e.g., the Apple 2 Digital Workflow Book, this website, asking friends) but there are a few basics I still don't get. While I know that relying on in-camera processing limits the potential quality of my pix, at least I'm comfortable with Nikon processing and know what to expect. I've read that with RAW files you can set the decoding to produce an initial image to work upon that reflects your in-camera settings. So are these in-camera settings just passed along (if you so choose) by default or do you need to set the decoding paramaeters? I imagine that WB for example is passed along as set in the camera (but can of course be modified afterward) but what about sharrpening? I know that Aperture includes default decoding that's supposed to be generally tailored for each camera model, but does this decoding reflect the particular sharpening settling set in the D700 for a specific photo? Or perhaps this is irrelevant since the sharpening that takes place at this RAW decoding stage may be minimal anyway since it is preferred for one to sharpen later (using Edge Sharpen) at the output stage? In short, as an example, let's say that I normally shoot my images as JPGs with an in-=camera sharpening set to 6 in my D700 -- what do I need to do in my new RAW workflow to end up with images with similar levels of sharpening? Thanks in advance!

    It is a valid question, but I fear the safest way to get an answer is to try it.
    Aperture understands some of the incamera settings, but not all. I never saw a list of exactly which settings it understands. The most striking example, in my opinion, is if you set the image to Monochrome picture control in the camera. Nikon software will see it as black and white, but Aperture will display the image in colour. As there is a sharpening associated with the picture control, I assume that sharpening will be ignored by Aperture.
    If you find somewhere else to set the sharpening in the camera, it is possible that it will be understood by Aperture.

  • Aperture and Adobe Camera Raw

    I would love to set up Aperture to allow me to edit images in Adobe Camera Raw.  I can open images from Aperture in Adobe Camera Raw by setting Adobe Bridge as my external editor, but none of the adjustments are saved in Aperture.  From Bridge, I can also save the file as a dng file that Aperture should be able to read and save it in the numbered folder where Aperture placed the original raw image, but the saved dng file doesn't show up in Aperture.  Apparently Aperture can't see any images in its own folders if it didn't place them there.
    I also tried making my adjustments in Adobe Raw, saving it as a dng file and then importing it into Aperture.  This is not ideal, as it would be convenient to do the Adobe Raw adjustments from within Aperture, but it does allow me to import the edits into Aperture.  Aperture does something odd in this case.  When I open the imported dng image in Aperture, at first it displays it with the edits I made in Adobe Raw but after a few seconds reverts to the originla raw image.  I can't figure out how to recover the adjustments.
    Can anyone fill me in on the nuances of Aperture in this workflow?  Is there some way I can at least make the raw edits in Adobe Raw and make them available in Aperture.
    Some of this may be my ignorance.  For some reason, I have never been able to fully grok the whole version/master process in Aperture, never quite sure how to move between versions and masters.  I suspect that some of my issues with the imported dng files is a version/master thing that I am not understanding.
    I'm beginning to wish that I had set Aperture up to use external folders rather than place my files in the Aperture database.  I think if I had done this it might have eased my current issues.
    Is there any way to export an Aperture database so it exports the images into folders that correspond to projects and folders in Aperture?  I suspect not, but . . . one can wish.
    Any help with any of this would be greatly appreciated.

    In the Adobe Camera Raw preferences, there is a section called: 'DNG File Handling'. You can (and may already have) select the option 'Update embedded JPG previews' and use the drop down to select either Medium or Full Size. The result should be (in Bridge at least) that adjustments you make in ACR and then either click 'Done' to save to the .XMP file inside the DNG file or click 'Open' to launch and render the image in PS for further work.
    The result should be an updated embedded JPEG inside the DNG file that can be used by any program that can read DNG and is set to use an embedded JPEG.
    In testing on my machine a couple of years ago on Snow Leopard, the OS X included program Preview did not show the updated previews though. It only displayed the original RAW data. I assumed it either was not set to show any embedded JPEG preview, or was simply not designed to be compatible in that way. Preview uses the same digital camera RAW compatibility function of OS X that Aperture uses. So it did not surprise me to see that it was not working in Aperture at that time. This was either a later version of AP 2 or early version of AP3, but I can't remember for sure.
    It was my understanding that the purpose and function of dng files is so that raw edits made by any software could be accessed cross platform through the open source dng file.  If Aperture simply chooses to ignore that data, it defeats the purpose of dng.
    My understanding of DNG is that it is an archive type file made of (1) a RAW conversion which holds the decoded RAW data, (2) any .XMP file that has been created by the decoding software as well as; (3) ITPC and EXIF metadata and some other info such as ICC profiles and the JPEG preview. You can also opt to include the original RAW file.
    I don't know the extent to which Aperture is designed to support the DNG file though. Does it handle it like a PSD file where it retains the full file content, but only supports displaying it in a limited fashion (e.g., no transparency)? Or should it actually read the .XMP data file and render it based on that info? I don't think this is the case as the .XMP data that pertains to adjustments made by another RAW decoder doesn't seem to be compatilble with the way Aperture is handling adjustments.
    You could certainly test the embedded JPEG in a DNG file by making and saving some changes to the copy of a file in Finder and then comparing the original DNG to the adjusted one using the Preview program. If the changes are not shown, then the issue (or lack of one depending on Apple's point of view) is with the OS X digital camera RAW compatibility function (which they update for new digital cameras periodically).
    If Preview does show the changes, you could then import both the original and adjusted DNG into an Aperture library (even a new test library) and see if it displays the differences. If it does, then this would point to an issue with sending a file from inside Aperture to an external program and then saving back (assuming this still fails to work as you expect).
    Sorry I don't have more. I decided not to go with DNG and just archive with RAW and JPEG depending on what I end up wanting to do with the images.

  • Missing "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file

    I'm having and issue with tint shifting when using the white balance brick. Several users have suggested deleting the Raw Decode Presets.plist however; that file is not located on my computer. How do I get Aperture to regenerate the list? Can somebody from Apple please help me correct this? This program is now unusable to me and I really do not want to go back to LR2 to complete my current project.
    This issue happened when the Prokit 5.1 update was installed. All of the images that were processes with A3 prior to the ProKit update do not have this issue until the RAW image is manually reprocessed. Also any image that was edited transfer to PSCS4 and brought back to AP3 is unaffected. This only seems to be an issue with new RAW files with AP3.0.1 with ProKit update.
    All suggestions are great appreciated.

    There is a way to do this with Camera Raw as well. Open your original raw image and make changes to it. Then, in ACR, use the save button to save a DNG copy that includes all of the changes. The DNG file will contain all of your changes as well as the original raw image data. After you have saved the DNG, either click on the Cancel button to cancel the changes you have made to the original raw image and return to Bridge, or else reset the image and start on your next rendering that you will save to another DNG file.

  • XSI RAW to Aperture via DNG not working

    I just got the Digital Rebel XSI and have been using Aperture for my JPEGs on my P&S camera and was hoping to finally shoot in RAW. From what I understand XSI's RAW is not supported in Aperture so I tried to batch convert RAW to DNG using Adobe Digital Negative Converter. However, Aperture did not accept these DNG files and said the file format was unsupported any thoughts on how I can get XSI's RAW into Aperture?

    First off thanks for all your help. If you haven't figured I'm an amateur newbie who's trying to take the next step to being an advanced amateur with getting the XSI. I've been using Aperture for my jpegs on my P&S camera since I prefer it's organizational tools to those in iPhoto.
    So now my "workflow" (I always think of that as a professional word and feel funny using it as an amateur) right now is to shoot in RAW and convert to DNG for including in Aperture and save the RAW files. If I later want to import the RAW files can I "overwrite" the DNGs with the corresponding RAW files and preserve whatever editing/touchups I did on the DNGs? Or will I have to reedit the RAW files again later?

    There's a bit to learn.  It will slowly make sense.
    Aperture is an empty field.  You're given a tractor and a whole bunch of attachments. What you grow, how, and where, is entirely up to you.
    Vaults are for back-up and only for back-up.  They have nothing to do with storing your working files.
    When your Library outgrows your system drive (and for good performance, you should leave c. 20% of every drive empty), it's time to convert some of your image's Masters from Managed to Referenced.  ("Managed" and "Referenced" refer to Masters, not to Libraries.)
    There are hundreds of posts in the forum, and several pages in the User Manual on using Masters.
    Many people run Aperture with the Library on their system disk, and most (or all) of their images' Masters on external FW drives.  This is a good set-up.  Note that you will likely have to take steps to back-up the data on your external drives.
    If you do the above, there should be no reason to delete any Projects.
    The choice of RAW or RAW+JPEG or JPEG depends on the kind of work you are doing.  I capture RAW only -- but I don't do any commercial shoots.  Pros on deadlines report that the RAW+JPEG works well for them.  Capture JPEG if it saves you time.  IMHO, there is not a good reason to shoot JPEG to save space (space is cheap; time expensive).
    Short-term solution: buy and use a FW800 external 1 TB drive, formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", and using Aperture relocate the Masters of all images older than 30 days to that drive.  (Be sure to change your back-up strategy to include this new drive; you may need a second new drive.)

    Since when did this happen? Directly after you upgraded to Aperture 3.3.2?
    If it happened directly after the upgrade the problem may be, that the raw support for your camera got lost. For some posters it helped to register the raw support again, see this post by Alan Roseman:

    If this does not help, you may need to reinstall Lion to bring back the raw support.
    But if the problem occured independent of a new installation, ypu may have a problem with your camera or the card you are using. Have you tried to use a different card or to reformat the card in the camera?

  • Adobe Camera Raw and Aperture

    Ok.. Please correct me if I'm wrong, because if what I am saying is actually true, then Aperture has some seriously frustrating issues.
    I use Aperture 3 to organize my photos and to do minor corrections, but the majority of my photo editing takes place in Photoshop CS5. I shoot in Raw so I expect to be able to use Adobe's wonderful Camera Raw plugin before opening a photo in Photoshop.
    Aperture gives you the ability to edit a photo in Photoshop and have the edited photo go back into Aperture. Thats a great feature. Unfortunately, it seems that if I try to send a raw photo from aperture to photoshop, it will not open in the Adobe Camera Raw plug in. It simply opens in photoshop. If I just drag the thumbnail from aperture into photoshop, it will open the camera raw dialogue and everythings great.. but if I do it that way, it will not update in aperture once I am done editing.
    It would be totally fine if I could just save the photoshop file and reimport it into aperture, but when I do that, it just shows up as a blank white photo, instead of the actual photo.
    So long story short there is no way to use Aperture AND adobe camera raw. I don't want to use Bridge.
    or is there???? Please give me a solution here or I want my money back.
    Or is there a way to reopen the camera raw function in photoshop, once the photo is already opened?

    regarding a possible workflow for your situation (altho' they are using CS3, not CS5).
    I use CS4 but want to move to CS5 to get the additional features of ACR (excellent noise reduction, lens-specific aberration controls, etc.) Thus, my interest in using ACR vs AP3 for some of my images.
    I know now that AP3 is doing RAW processing at the moment of import, and that 'file' is no longer able to be processed by ACR via AP3. I was wondering about your trick of dragging the thumbnail to Photoshop and having it open in ACR. I cannot duplicate this, and I've tried different methods. If I could do this, that would be half the battle. (Can you enlighten me?) I will also take a look at Catapult.
    I know of no way to open ACR while an image is open in Photoshop (APS). The plugin seems to kick in only when you open it from Bridge or the Finder.
    Regarding the blank white photo, I'm assuming it is a PSD with no thumbnail. I have seen this when I import 'old' PSD's into AP3. I fixed this by going into the Preferences in APS, under File Handling/File Compatibility make sure you set 'Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility' to 'Always'. Then, you must open the blank white photo files and Save As... the same file name to overwrite the blank one. You should then see the thumbnail. (Also in APS Preferences, set File Saving Options, Image Preview to 'Always Save').
    Granted, not having the option of easily using ACR is a tough pill to swallow for those of us who are in the Bridge/APS camp. I will readily forgo the 'pleasures' of using Bridge for AP3. I will NEVER give up APS since I need layers and graphic/text capabilities it offers. So a smooth interaction between AP3 and APS is a must for me. However, AP3 offers so much more than Lightroom, that I won't look back, now that I've made the switch. Good luck!

  • I am in Aperture 3, editing from raw, getting bouncing ball every few edits.  i created a new aperture library to see if this would help.  it does not.  i have to force quit to keep working.   I  shoot alot as my work.. this is making the process take lon

    How much RAM, how full is the hard drive, and what computer? 8 GB RAM is recommended, and I also recommend that you do not upgrade to OS 10.7 Lion at this time.

  • Aperture imports Lumix GF2 RAW files with strong green colour cast

    I'm using Aperture 3.3.1 with Digital Camera RAW 3.14.0 built 6460000.1 and iPhoto 9.3.1
    When importing RAW files from my Panasonic Lumix GF2 into Aperture, the initial thumbnails are fine (it displays those embedded in the RAW file), but when Aperture has finished its processing, thumbails and full size images are dark and green - it seems only the green channel has been taken into account.
    When importing the same photos in iPhotos, they look normal, with all their colours.
    If I open the iPhoto library with Aperture, the photos are fine as well.
    This is the first time I import photos since updating Aperture, iPhoto and Camera RAW a few days ago - I had the previous versions from before the updates issued around the last WWDC event.
    I would have assumed iPhoto and Aperture use the same Camera RAW engine so I don't understand how Aperture is "broken" but not iPhoto.
    Any ideas for the resolution of this issue are welcome.

    Read the instructions carefully as there is a space to remove (introduce by the line break in the forum), then you need to reboot your Mac.
    I solved my problem for new image imports. Regenerating the thumbails of already imported images didn't change anything. I gues this was because my issue was not just with the thumbails, but the whole image, without the Quick Preview feature activated.

  • Aperture and Canon 40D RAW

    When will Aperture support RAW from my Canon 40D?
    In the meantime how should I handle my RAW images? Can I import them into Aperture now with metadata attached and when the support is there all my photos and metadata will appear?

    The first question has been asked many times in the last 4 weeks and there's no answer. Ask more and Apple will lock this thread.
    Second question. If you shoot RAW only, Aperture will import the file, and you won't be able to see it or work with it. You can export it to use Canon's DPP, Photoshop or other available converter to process it, save it to TIFF or JPEG, and then reimport to Aperture for now.
    If you shoot RAW and JPEG, Aperture will import both files, but it's not apparent where the JPG file is. Control-click or right-click the grey square thumbnail or the reddish main window, and click "New Version from Master JPEG" to reveal the full-resolution JPEG image the camera took.
    When OSX starts supporting 40D in the future, those RAW files will automatically be shown inside Aperture.

    Hi all,
    I'm tempted to buy Vuescan and change my scanning workflow so that I can save my scans as RAW's.
    It's being advertised that Aperture can now see RAW files that are not (yet) natively supported by Apple in the 2.0 DNG 'mode'.
    - can someone who uses both programs please confirm this?
    - how good are the Vuescan RAW files?
    - how big are the files in 300 dpi for 24 x 36 cm?
    - can someone please post a Vuescan RAW to play with in Aperture?

    Peter,
    Vuescan DNG RAW files cannot be read by Aperture 2. Vuescan can also save RAW as tif but using them in Aperture 2 is not really possible.Extremely slow.
    Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom can read them swiftly and it works very well.
    To use them in Aperture, I (batch) convert to tif in Lightroom or ACR.
    I can either adjust them in LR or ACR before exporting, or I can export them straight and adjust in Aperture.
    I scan 24x36mm slides using a Nikon 8000 at 4000 dpi and the files are about 57mb both as tif and DNG!
    The reason I started scanning RAW with Vuescan is that I do batch scans and then can always adjust only the files I want to work with using Lightroom.
    To make a long story longer, using the Nikon Scan software I can also save the files as NEF but these are NOT the same as NEF RAW camera files and they are only useful using Nikon Capture NX and again converting to tif.
