DPM 2010 agent install on W2k8 Domain Controller issue

Hey guys, so I'm having a problem getting DPM 2010 agents on my Windows 2008 domain controllers. For some reason the agent will not communicate with the dpm server after running the attach process. The process I go through to install (which is
working in my Dev environment) is
1) (on DC) Run manual agent install by running agent.exe file from ProtectionAgents folder on DPM server
2) (on DC) Run the setdpmserver command line to specify the DPM server
3) (on specified DPM server) Run Agent attach sequence from Agent tabs in DPM console which says successful, but when you return to agents view under "unprotected computers" I see error.
I've verified the tests that other users have posted on this forum including
PING, DCOM permissions, verifying that inbound rules are setup, tested SMB, tested RPC, and also uninstalled and reinstalled the agent. Any ideas where to search next?

I checked the MSDPMCurr.errlog, but I'm not exactly sure how to look for the failures that relate to the DC. When I search for the netbios name of the DC, I can see failures, but I also see identical failures under other server names as well. Is there anything
specifically I should be looking for?
I am requesting turning off the integrated firewall for testing as well and am awaiting an answer.
I am attaching part of the log I was looking at.

  • DPM 2010 agent installation on Domain Controller

Hello all, recently I tried to install the agent from my DPM 2010 server onto a Win2K8 Domain controller which failed (used a Domain Admin's credientials for the install, and on trusted domain). I remember in DPM 2007 you needed to install the agent through
command line. Can someone post up the correct steps to get a DPM 2010 agent installed to a DC?

    Same issue here.
Pushing a DPM 2010 agent to a Windows 2008 DC fails with the error:
    ============
You cannot install the protection agent on SV-MGMT-03.xxxxxx.nl because access to the computer has been denied.
    ============
The DPM 2010 agent software is installed but DPM doesn't add the server. With an attach i can add the server but DPM 2010 cannot communicate with it.
    ===============
    Protection agent version: 3.0.7696.0
Error: Data Protection Manager Error ID: 270
The agent operation failed on sv-mgmt-03.xxxxx.nl because DPM could not communicate with the DPM protection agent. The computer may be protected by another DPM server, or the protection agent may have been uninstalled on the protected computer.
If sv-mgmt-03.xxxxxxx.nl is a workgroup server, the password for the DPM user account could have been changed or may have expired.
Recommended action: Check the following to troubleshoot this issue:
    1) If the agent is not installed on sv-mgmt-03.xxxxxxxxx.nl, run DpmAgentInstaller.exe with this DPM computer as a parameter. For details, see the DPM Deployment Guide.
    2) To attach the computer correctly to this DPM server, run the SetDpmServer tool on the protected computer.
    3) If the computer is protected by another DPM server, or if the protection agent has been uninstalled, remove the protected data sources on this computer from active protection. Then, remove the entry of this computer from the Agents tab in the Management
    task area.
    4) If sv-mgmt-03.xxxxxxxxx.nl is a workgroup server, run SetDpmServer with the -UpdatePassword flag on the protected computer and Update-NonDomainServerInfo.ps1 on the DPM server to update the password.
    5) If the DPM server and the protected computer are not in the same domain, ensure that there is a two-way trust setup between the two domains.
If the computer is protected by another DPM server, or if the protection agent has been uninstalled, you can remove the record of the computer from this DPM server.

  • Install Active Directory Domain Controller on Windows server 2008 enterprise, dont login on Sql Server 2008 R2

I install Active Directory Domain Controller on Windows server 2008 enterprise and dont login on Sql Server 2008 R2. Before install ADDC, I have logon SQL Server 2008r2 Success, After when i install ADDC is don't logon on SQL Server 2008r2 -->not success.
I have uninstalled ADDC but i still can't login on SQL server 2008r2.
please help me. it  is very very disaster!
I think is loss account SQL server 2008r2!

    Hello,
I stronly recommend you post the detail error message to us while you try to connect to SQL Server instance, it's useful for us to do further investigation.
Microsoft recommends that you do not install SQL Server 2008 R2 on a domain controller, there are some limitations:
You cannot run SQL Server services on a domain controller under a local service account or a network service account.
After SQL Server is installed on a computer, you cannot change the computer from a domain member to a domain controller. You must uninstall SQL Server before you change the host computer to a domain controller.
After SQL Server is installed on a computer, you cannot change the computer from a domain controller to a domain member. You must uninstall SQL Server before you change the host computer to a domain member.
SQL Server failover cluster instances are not supported where cluster nodes are domain controllers.
SQL Server Setup cannot create security groups or provision SQL Server service accounts on a read-only domain controller. In this scenario, Setup will fail.
On Windows Server 2003, SQL Server services can run under a domain account or a local system account.
So, I would suggest you try to open up Windows Services list and changed the account for SQL Server service.

  • Anyone have Contract Manager v13 installed on a domain controller?

    Hello Everyone
I have a client who says that the primavera reseller told him it was ok to install CM13 on his Domain controller w2k3 r2, which hosts other databases such as quickbooks and instances of IIS.
Has anyone ever installed in a situation like this, concurrently with other Dbs and Web servers running?
I understand that the app server and web server is usually 2 separate machines as well, but with previous versions of CM, you were able to install both on one machine. And those machines were dedicated to CM.
A quick one line response on if your server/serves are dedicated for CM would be great!
Any other information would be a great help as well!
    Thanks
    Dennis

Technically its not impossible. :) one line! :]
Tough I would never install CM on DC, basically I would avoid anything that would make the crash of DC more probable.
CM service will take 500-800MB of the RAM, takes a huge peek on CPU while deployment, after that is basically not that troublesome,
Database (SQL or oracle) needs it own memory and CPU.
I'm not sure if want your DC with other services to be overloaded.
IIS - they need to know that if any of the apps they use on IIS is using port 80 they will not be able to use CM service on port 80 as well.
With the prices of hardware vs prices of CM licenses I would ask a loud - why do you want all in one machine?

  • Is it possible Lync 2013 to be installed on a Domain Controller?

I run a small infrastructure with two servers only,
Both Domain Controllers with Windows 2008 R2 and the one is a file server too. I would like to know if I can install Lync 2013 Standard Server to any of them? I have not found a clear answer anywhere as I found for 2010.
    Thank You in advance

    Hi,
    Agree with Michael,
You can't install Lync server on DC. You should use another server.
Here is a similar may help you, it is for Lync server 2010 but similar for Lync server 2013:

  • Agent status - Unavailable (DPM 2010)

We seem to be experiencing problems with our DPM agents. Everything was working fine until we came in this morning to find that all of our DPM 2010 Agents were reporting 'Unavailable'
    'Protection agent version: 3.0.7706.0
Error: Data Protection Manager Error ID: 308
The protection agent operation failed because DPM could not communicate with the Protection Agent service.
Detailed error code: VssError:Invalid value for registry
     (0x80040153)'
We've tried all of the suggested steps to fix the problem without any success. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
    Are you seeing
Event ID: 18213 in the System event logs of the protected servers?
If so, it could be the DCOM permissions in the registry have become corrupted. Permissions for DCOM applications are stored in the registry. The steps below rewrite the permissions in the registry thus correcting the corruption:
    1.
On the protected server that is generating the 18213 event run dcomcnfg.exe.
    2.
Navigate to Component Services -> Computers -> My Computer -> DCOM Config ->
    DPM RA Service.
    3.
Right-click on DPM RA Service and select Properties.
    4.
On the Properties dialog go to the Security Tab. Edit the Launch and Activation Permissions.
    5.
Simply Add “Everyone” and grant some permission to them ( e.g. Local Launch). Click OK then OK.
    6.
Go back in and remove the permission just added.
    7.
    Exit dcomcnfg.exe

  • Dpm 2010 and ws2012r2 hyper-v

Hi i have dpm 2010 and new ws2012r2 hyper-v. I get the error replica is not consistency. I get error id104 unknow error 0x80041010.
ok i found out that dpm 2010 dont support ws2012r2.
is there a fix or anything i can use dpm on ws2012r2hyper-v?Or need i install agents into vm becase the os of vm are 2008r2.

    Hi,
That is correct - only DPM 2012 R2 can protect Windows 2012 R2 workloads.  I would recommend setting up a dedicated DPM 2012 R2 server to protect the Hyper-V guests.   If that is not doable, then yes, you can protect the guest workloads directly
by installing DPM 2010 agents inside the guests.

  • Adding second domain controller in Windows server 2012 R2

Hello, our primary domain controller is currently on a machine that has Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. We are planning to setup a second domain controller as a failover to our primary domain controller. My question is, can we have a secondary domain
controller on a Windows Server 2012 R2 even if our primary domain controller is on a machine that has Windows Server 2008 R2?

I think I found the answer to my question.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd464018(v=ws.10).aspx
"In Windows Server 2012, Adprep.exe is integrated into the AD DS installation process and runs automatically as needed. For example, when you install the first domain controller that runs Windows Server 2012 into an existing domain and forest, then adprep
/forestprep and adprep /domainprep automatically run and report the results of the operations.
Some organizations may prefer to run Adprep.exe separately in advance of an AD DS installation. For this reason, Adprep.exe is also included in the \Support\Adprep folder of the operating system disk.
In Windows Server 2012, there is only one 64-bit version of Adprep.exe. It can be run remotely from any server that runs a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012. The computer where you run it can be either
    domain-joined or in a workgroup.
The version of Adprep.exe in Windows Server 2012 includes new syntax and parameter options in order to run it remotely. For more information, see
    Adprep."

  • How to install Windows Updates on a 2012 Domain Controller w/Group Policy Settings

    Hello All,
I'm having an issue installing Windows Updates on my Windows Server 2012 Standard with AD DS role, acting as a backup DC.
I have Group Policies setup for the Domain Controllers to download updates from my WSUS server but not to install them. When I go to my Windows Server 2003 R2 Domain Controller, I can install updates via the "Install Updates and Shutdown". That
option doesn't show up on the 2012 server. I can see from my WSUS server and the event viewer that the updates are being downloaded to the 2012 server........just no option for me to install the updates.
Am I just missing something or will I need to change the way my Group Policy is setup to allow installs and/or downloads? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Tony

So I've totally removed the GPO settings for configuring updates on the Default Domain Controllers OU and I can get the Windows Server 2003 Server to get updates from Windows Updates, but the 2012 Server still won't show me how to download or install any
updates. It just states on the log-in screen that there are "Windows Updates Sign in and install important updates".
Well guess what Microsoft! I've signed in and still don't see where I can install updates!!!
    I guess because you've set AU=3.
There doesn't seem to be much documented in depth about AU/WUAgent (not in the history of forever), but Lawrence and others in the WSUS forum do cover a lot of related question about the agent and also GP settings.
Lawrence has blogged a lot of detail about the registry settings which are available for AU/WU, and how some of those settings are not practically of any use since WinXP.
So, even though your question isn't about WSUS, the WSUS forum is a great place to visit for help for WUAgent etc.
Anyway, "where can I install updates?" :
on the Start screen, Search for "Windows Update"
    or
    Settings charm
    Change PC Settings
    Update and Recovery
    Windows Update
    or
    Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update
Some further (light) discussion on the "new" behaviour:

  • Remove Domain Controller role from Exchange 2010 Server

    Hi team,
There is a client with Domain Controller (2008 R2) running together with Exchange Server 2010 SP3. However there were some huge problems with Exchange and DC therefore since the best practice is to keep those roles seperately, they are in need of doing so.
Can someone please suggest me the best approach? The server they use right now is with 16GB therefore whatever done, Exchange should be on that machine and DC on the other 6GB.
    Option 01.
Both Exchange and DC are together
Install new Exchange on a temporary Server and move everything make that Exchange server the only working primary
Remove exchange from the DC server
Promote new Additional DC and promote it with FSMO and make primary
Demote the old DC from the 16GB server
Install Exchange again on the 16GB server and move everything from the temporary server
    Or Option 02
Add new additionall Domain Controller server and make it primary with GC and FSMO
Run dcpromo to demote the old Domain controller role from where the Exchange Server too is installed
Once DC role is removed from the exchange server, set up DNS and perform a restart, so Exchange will identify the new GC and domain controller
    Live happily ever after
    Thank You,
    Cheers!!

Adding/Removing the DC-Role while Exchange is installed, is not supported so forget about your Option 2.
    Here's what I would do:
    1. Install a new GC/DC (move FSMO etc)
    2. Install a new temporary server for Exchange and move everthing over
    3. Decomission the old Exchange Server
    4. Demote the old Domain Controller
    5. Install Exchange on a newly freshly installed OS and move everything over from your temp server

  • Installing Exchange on a domain controller?

We are very small business firm like less than 10 people. I planning to setup new server. Initially I thought install AD, DNS, DHCP, DC and Exchange on same server. Microsoft not recommending all in my server
Installing Exchange on a domain controller is not recommended.
So give me suggestion, Is it OK install everything on server for small company like us? or
create 1 virtual and install Exchange on that server and rest will be on base?.
    ItsMeSri SP 2013 Foundation

    Hi,
It is not recommended to install Exchange server on a domain controller. You can create a virtual Exchange server, there is a lot of planning that goes into constructing a virtualized Exchange infrastructure, with the primary consideration being hardware
allocation and fault tolerance. Concerning these factors will guide you to a solid and reliable infrastructure.
For more information, here is a blog for your reference.

  • DPM 2012 Manual Agent Install Fails

    Hello Everyone,
Using DPM 2012 SP1, I've been stuck on an issue for some time now in trying to get a DPM agent install accomplished on a certain server. The DPM server resides on a parent domain and the server that I am having an issue with is on a child domain. Other servers
on the child domain have installed the agent without issue when doing it manually.
Here is the command I use (as an administrator):
    net use X: \\DPMSERVERNAME.parentdomain.com\c$
    cd /d X:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\agents\RA\4.1.3465.0\amd64\1033
    DPMAgentInstaller_KB2991995_AMD64.exe dpmservername.parentdomain.com
The installation proceeds through the Microsoft License Terms, begins to install and then backs out. The error message that is generated states: "DPMAgentinstaller failed with error code = 0X80070643 error says: fatal error during installation"
In researching the 1708 error within the log file it lead me to the fact that maybe the firewall on the target server was the issue. I
ran this suggested fix on the target server:
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=\"@FirewallAPI.dll,-29502\" new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=\"@FirewallAPI.dll,-34251\" new enable=yes
    netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name=dpmra dir=in program=\"%PROGRAMFILES%\\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\\DPM\\bin\\DPMRA.exe\" profile=Any action=allow
    netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name=DPMRA_DCOM_135 dir=in action=allow  protocol=TCP localport=135 profile=Any
    The issue still persists.
The MSDPMAgentinstall log file says the following at the end:

Any ideas where to turn next?

I do not have a Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\ProductionAgents\RA\4.1.3313.0\amd64
file path on the DPm system.
Rather Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\ProtectionAgents\RA\4.1.3313.0\amd64
    Still, I ran the DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe
from that file path and the agent did not install.
Also, on the DPM server I have added the target machine name to the DPMRADmTrustedMachines
group. I also made sure that the domain service account is in the same group. Still no luck.
