DPM 2012 - File server backup

Hi,
Is there any article about, what is the best practice to backup file server ?
I'm backing up data to local storage and once a months to Tapes.

  • DPM 2012 R2 long backup to tape job randomly fail after installing SCCM 2012 Client

    Hello,
I'm managing a two nodes 2012 R2 file server cluster that contains a 16To CSV. I'm using DPM 2012 R2 to backup this entire shared volume directly to LTO 4 tapes, the job last about 55h.
Since SCCM 2012 client has been installed(I don't manage it), the tape jobs are failing ramdomly after several hours with the error:
    Type: Tape backup
    Status: Failed
Description: The DPM service was unable to communicate with the protection agent on serverX.xxxx.xxx . (ID 52 Details: The semaphore timeout period has expired (0x80070079))

Protection group: File Server Tape Protection
Library: Quantum PX500 Series Medium Changer
Tape Label (Barcode): File Server Tape Protection-00000230 (000043L4)
If I uninstall SCCM 2012 client, no more issue, backups succeed. I've asked our SCCM team, no specific task has been scheduled or deployed in SCCM.
I can't see anything abnormal in logs.
    Any idea?

I have disabled "Configuration Manager Maintenance" and I have also tried to set the registry value HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CCM\CcmEval\NotifyOnly to TRUE and still the same issue.
I can't find any correlated errors in the Windows event logs, task scheduler history neither in the DPM logs.
I've increased the log level of DPM by following the following procedure
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/george_bethanis/archive/2013/11/04/how-to-collect-dpm-verbose-logs.aspx
Now i'm suspecting the maintenance job of Windows 2012 R2, i'll try to disabled this task. But the fact is that I don't have this backup issue if SCCM 2012 client is not installed.
I'm waiting for next logs and will keep you informed

  • DPM 2012 R2 cannot backup VM online

    Hi Everyone,
I'm having a problem trying to backup a VM with DPM, as it shows "offline" backup only (not online).
    Our environment:
DPM 2012 R2 server with UR5, running on Windows 2012 R2. This server backs up all Virtual Machines running on a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster. All the VMs are running Windows 2008 R2, with the latest Hyper-V Integration Tool (v6.3.9600.16384).
Only a few VMs on that cluster cannot be backed up "online".
    I already checked the following:
     - The backup (volume snapshot) integration service is installed and enabled in the VM configuration
     - The VM does not have any dynamic disks
     - All Disks on the VM are NTFS
     - The VM Cluster resource is online
     - The VM is running
     - The Shadow storage assignment inside the VM for all volumes are set on the respective volume (not different)
     - The VM has a SCSI controller
     - Although meant for another version of DPM and OS, I tried to add the following registry key:
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore - REG_DWORD ScopeSnapshots 0x0
    (solution found here: https://mvanvliet.wordpress.com/2013/04/10/issue-windows-server-2012-virtual-machines-can-only-be-backed-up-using-saved-state/)
     - Also tried to remove all VHDX from the VM configuration, save the config and re-add the VHDX
    (solution found here: http://blog.metasplo.it/2014/02/dpm-2012-r2-only-allows-offline-backups.html)
     - All the disks within the VM have plenty of free space (more than 30% on each volumes)
     - Try to move the VM around on different hosts on the Hyper-V cluster
I've run out of troubleshooting steps...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Stephane

    Hello Stephane.
It seems that we have the same Problem.
Since we have installed the UR5 we have some VM’s that
can no more backed up Online. Last Sunday we had a crash on a host. After we
have investigated the issue we think it have to do with the Backup and the UR5.
We have found some errors where the host have lost the iscsi Target when the
    Backup have begun.
We have 2 Infrastructures with the same configuration HP
Store Virtual and the Hardware VSS Provider. We can see that on the Storage no
    Snapshots are created.
We try now to add (Workaround) a little Disk to this
Vm’s that is configured as DynamicDisk. So we hope to make an Offline backup.
I think we have to open a case.

  • Slow applications start from win 2012 file server using win 7 workstations

I hope someone can help me with why applications are slow to load i have replaced a 8 year old server running  win 2003 and replaced it with dell t620 running win 2012 r2 it is like 20 times faster but it is slower than the old server. the office has
7 win 7 x64 machines all our applications are running from win 2012 file server. The server is set up as following the server runs with two hyper-v machines one machine runs ad, file server, dhcp, dns and printer server and the other is domino server and remote
    desktop.
the machine is more than capable but it is not so i started reading after i run out of ideas. i looked every where but the issue is with the server after trying everything else i did a simple test If i go to the application folder and click on it apps load
instantly if i then type a unc path it takes from instant load to 3 and a bit seconds the same as the workstations. The same speed if I use ip address.
    network cards are intel
i would really appreciate if somebody has suggestions that i could try
    thank you

    Hi,
Do you mean that applications in the application folder start slowly when you access the application folder on the Windows 2012 R2 file server from Windows 7 workstations using UNC path or IP address. Do all the files in the application folder have the same
issue? Please create a shared folder on the file server, then access the shared folder from Windows 7 workstations to check if the issue still exists.
You could disable SMBv3 on server 2012 to check if the issue related to SMB protocol.
How to enable and disable SMBv1, SMBv2, and SMBv3 in Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2696547/en-us
Warning: We do not recommend that you disable SMBv2 or SMBv3. Disable SMBv2 or SMBv3 only as a temporary troubleshooting measure. Do not leave SMBv2 or SMBv3 disabled.

  • Hyper-V 2012 High Availability using Windows Server 2012 File Server Storage

    Hi Guys,
Need your expertise regarding hyper-v high availability. We setup 2 hyper-v 2012 host in our infra for our domain consolidation project. Unfortunately, we don't have hardware storage that is said to be a requirement that we can use to create a failover cluster
for hyper-v host to implement HA. Here's the setup:
    Host1
    HP Proliant L380 G7
    Windows Server 2012 Std
Hyper-V role, Failover Cluster Manager and File and Storage Services installed
    Host2
    Dell PowerEdge 2950
    Windows Server 2012 Std
Hyper-V role, Failover Cluster Manager and File and Storage Services installed
    Storage
    Dell PowerEdge 6800
    Windows Server 2012 Std
    File and Storage Services installed
I'm able to configure the new feature about Shared Nothing Live Migration - i'm able to move VM's back and fort between my hosts without storage. But this is planned and proactive approach. My concern is to have my hyper-v host to become highly available in
the event of system failure. If my host1 dies, the VMs should go/move to host2 and vice versa. In setting this up, i believe i need to enable the failover clustering between my hyper-v hosts which i already did but upon validation, it says "No disks
were found on which to perform cluster validation tests." Is it possible to cluster it using just a regular windows file server? I've read about SMB 3.0 and i've configured it as well i'm able to save VMs on my file server, but i don't think that my hyper-v
    hosts are already highly available.
Any feedback and suggestions or recommendation is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Your shared storage is a single point of failure with this scenario so I would not consider the whole setup as a production configuration... Also setup is both slow (all I/O is travelling down the wire to storage server, running VMs from DAS is ages faster)
and expensive (third server + extra Windows license). I would think twice about what you do and either deploy a built-in VM replication technologies (Hyper-V Replica) and apps built-in clustering features that does not require shared storage (SQL Server and
Database Mirroring for example, BTW what workload do you run?) or use some third-party software creating fault tolerant shared storage from DAS or investing into physical shared storage hardware (HA one of course).
    Hi VR38DETT,
Thanks for responding. The hosts will cater a domain controller (on each host), Web filtering software (Websense), Anti-Virus (McAfee ePO), WSUS and an Auditserver as of the moment. Is the Hyper-V Replica somewhat give "high availability" to VMs or Hyper-V
hosts? Also, is the cluster required in order to implement it? Haven't tried that but worth a try.

  • Server 2012 File Server Cluster Shadow Copies Disappear Some Time After Failover

    Hello,
I've seen similar questions posted on here before however I have yet to find a solution that worked for us so I'm adding my process in hopes someone can point out where I went wrong.
The problem: After failover, shadow copies are only available for a short time on the secondary server.  Before the task to create new shadow copies happens the shadow copies are deleted.  Failing back shows them missing on the primary server as
    well when this happens.
We have a 2 node (hereafter server1 and server2) cluster with a quorum disk.  There are 8 disk resources which are mapped to the cluster via iScsi.  4 of these disks are setup as storage and the other 4 are currently set up as shadow copy volumes
    for their respective storage volume.
Previously we weren't using separate shadow copy volumes and seeing the same issue described in the topic title.  I followed two other topics on here that seemed close and then setup the separate shadow copy volumes however it has yet to alleviate the
issue.  These are the two other topics :
    Topic 1: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/ba0d2568-53ac-4523-a49e-4e453d14627f/failover-cluster-server-file-server-role-is-clustered-shadow-copies-do-not-seem-to-travel-to?forum=winserverClustering
    Topic 2: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/c884c31b-a50e-4c9d-96f3-119e347a61e8/shadow-copies-missing-after-failover-on-2008-r2-cluster
After reading both of those topics I did the following:
    1) Add the 4 new volumes to the cluster for shadow copies
    2) Made each storage volume dependent on it's shadow copy volume in FCM
    3) Went to the currently active node directly and opened up "My Computer", I then went to the properties of each storage volume and set up shadow copies to go to the respective shadow copy volume drive letter with correct size for spacing, etc.
    4) I then went back to FCM and right clicked on the corresponding storage volume and choose "Configure Shadow Copy" and set the schedule for 12:00 noon and 5:00 PM.
    5) I noticed that on the nodes the task was created and that the task would failover between the nodes and appeared correct.
    6) Everything appears to failover correctly, all volumes come up, drive letters are same, shadow copy storage settings are the same, and 4 scheduled tasks for shadow copy appear on the current node after failover.
Thinking everything was setup according to best practice I did some testing by changing file contents throughout the day making sure that previous versions were created as scheduled on server1.  I then rebooted Server1 to simulate failure.  Server2
picked up the role within about 10 seconds and files were avaiable.  I checked and I could still see previous versions for the files after failover that were created on server1.  Unfortunately that didn't last as the next day before noon I was going
to make more changes to files to ensure that not only could we see the shadow copies that were created when Server1 owned the file server role but also that the copies created on Server2 would be seen on failback.  I was disappointed to discover that
the shadow copies were all gone and failing back didn't produce them either.
Does anyone have any insight into this issue?  I must be missing a switch somewhere or perhaps this isn't even possible with our cluster type based on this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc779378%28v=ws.10%29.aspx
Now here's an interesting part, shadow copies on 1 of our 4 volumes have been retained from both nodes through the testing, but I can't figure out what makes it different though I do suspect that perhaps the "Disk#s" in computer management / disk
management perhaps need to be the same between servers?  For example, on server 1 the disk #s for cluster volume 1 might be "Disk4" but on server 2 the same volume might be called "Disk7", however I think that operations like this
and shadow copy are based on the disk GUID and perhaps this shouldn't matter.
Edit, checked on the disk numbers, I see no correlation between what I'm seeing in shadow copy and what is happening to the numbers.  All other items, quotas, etc fail and work correctly despite these diffs:
    Disk Numbers on Server 1:
Format: "shadow/storerelation volume = Disk Number"
    aHome storage1 =   16
    aShared storage2 = 09
    sHome storage3 =   01
    sShared storage4 = 04
    aHome shadow1 =   10
    aShared shadow2 = 11
    sHome shadow3 =   02
    sShared shadow4 = 05
    Disk numbers on Server 2:
    aHome storage1 = 16 (SAME)
    aShared storage2 = 04 (DIFF)
    sHome storage3 = 05 (DIFF)
    sShared storage4 = 08 (DIFF)
    aHome shadow1 = 10 (SAME)
    aShared shadow2 = 11 (SAME)
    sHome shadow3 = 06 (DIFF)
    sShared shadow4 = 09 (DIFF)
Thanks in advance for your assistance/guidance on this matter!

    Hello Alex,
Thank you for your reply.  I will go through your questions in order as best I can, though I'm not the backup expert here.
    1) "Did you see any event ID when the VSS fail?
please offer us more information about your environment, such as what type backup you are using the soft ware based or hard ware VSS device."
I saw a number of events on inspection.  Interestingly enough, the event ID 60 issues did not occur on the drive where shadow copies did remain after the two reboots.  I'm putting my event notes in a code block to try to preserve formatting/readability.
I've written down events from both server 1 and 2 in this code block, documenting the first reboot causing the role to move to server 2 and then the second reboot going back to server 1:

We are using Symantec NetBackup.  The client agent is installed on both server1 and 2.  We're backing them up based on the complete drive letter for each storage volume (this makes recovery easier).  I believe this is what you would call "software
based VSS".  We don't have the infrastructure/setup to do hardware based snapshots.  The drives reside on a compellent san mapped to the cluster via iScsi.
    2) "Confirm the following registry is exist:
    - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Settings"
The key is there, however the DWORD value is not, would that mean that the
default value is being used at this point?

  • DPM 2012 secondary server

    Hi Everyone
Just confirming that a secondary DPM server connects to the individual agents which the primary protects? Rather than getting the replica information straight from the primary?
When I went to protect the primary server with a secondary, the secondary complained that it didn't have access to the clients which are protected by the primary.
    Sound correct?

    Hi,
No. Please read this statement from this link: (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb795680.aspx) as it breaks it down.
"The secondary DPM server protects the database of the primary DPM server, and also protects the replicas of volumes C and D of the file server."
So the Secondary DPM server is protecting the Primary DPM servers database and replicas. It communicates with the Primary DPM server not directly with Protected Servers of that Primary DPM server. Another indicator is that you have to switch protection (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb808972.aspx)
if you want the secondary DPM server to protect the Primary DPM servers Protected Servers directly.

  • Server 2012 file server loses connection to passthrough disk

    Hi!
We have a virtual fileserver (server 2012), on a server 2012 hyper-v cluster. This server uses a passthrough disk as the main file store (D:\). This disk contains all the user data, profiles etc. Data is stored on a Dell Powervault md3220 (Direct Attached
Storage). The other two virtual disks on the storage have no issues.
I contacted Dell support and they couldn't find an issue with the storage.
A few days ago the D: drive of the file server became unaccesable for no apparent reason, the server became unresponsive and the only way to get it up and running was to shutdown the file server and reboot it. After that the disk became accesible again,
but the issue repeated after a few minutes. After that, it worked for about three days.
A couple of days later we had the same issue.
I can't find any apparent causes in the logs and searching the web leads me nowhere (maybe one topic on this forum, but I'm not sure if it's the same issue, but it doesn't have a solution anyway).
I really hope someone has an idea on how to solve it, because it interferes with the final exams taking place at the moment.

    Hi,
Did you access the D: drive of the file server locally or on a client? There is a similar thread, please go through it to help troubleshoot this issue:

  • Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 - Server Backup Retention

    Hi,
all info that I find on Technet seems to say that WSE should manage the space of the server backup hard drives automatically (ie. delete older backups to create newer ones). However, all threads on this topic usually involve users who only have 1 backup
    drive.
In my case, we use 2 server backup hard drives in onsite/offsite rotation. Both drives are identical 2Tb hard drives. Drive 1 was nearing full capacity, so we swapped it out with Drive 2. A few days later, we plugged Drive 1 back in, expecting it to self-clean.
Instead, it reached 100% capacity, and backups have been failing for 3 days now.
So Drive 1 is 100% full (2Tb), and contains 91 backups.
Drive 2's is lower, but I suspect that's simply because we didn't leave it plugged in to the server as long as Drive 1 (so it has fewer backups).
How can this situation be fixed?

    Hi,
It seems that the Drive 1 needs to be attached to the server when you swapped it out with Drive 2. You could try to refer to the article below to resolve the issue:

  • DPM 2012 R2 All backups fail with recovery point volume not available after resizing OS disk

I resized the C drive partition of my DPM server (the data is on a separate dedicated array) and everything failed. I put it back but everything is still failing with the same problem as here:
DPM 2007: The recovery point volume is not available?
I've run chkdsk for a couple and both have given the following after doing 3 stages:
Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.
    No further action is required.
The backups still fail and the only error information I can find in the event logs is:
Backup job for datasource: Online\<VM name> on production server: <host FQDN> failed.
How can I find out what the problem actually is?
Is it possible to resize the C drive containing a DPM install? If so what can it be safely resized to? It easily met the minimum requirements and I don't know of anything in the documentation that says resizing the OS disk may cause issues.
Preparing your environment for System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager (DPM)

    Hi,
Resizing the boot partition (usually C:) should not effect DPM in any way.  DPM writes directly to it's volumes contained in the storage pool and not through the mount points on the C: drive.    So is the DPM UI showing
missing volume next to some data sources ?   Try doing a DPM disk rescan and see if that removes the missing volume flag.

  • Unable to configure BMR protection on Windows Server 2008 from DPM 2012 r2 server

We are trying to implement BMR and System State protection on our physical servers and have had issues when trying to set it up for a server running windows server 2008. I have verified that the DPM agent is up to date running version 4.2.1273.0. When
configuring the protection group and expanding system protection the only option is system state. When configuring protection on other physical servers running Windows Server 2012 I am able to select bare metal recovery. Has anyone else had this issue and
know how we can resolve this? Thank you for anyone who takes the time to lend a helping hand.

    Hi,
Do you have Windows backup feature installed on the server in question?
Also is the server part of a work group or untrusted domain?

  • Windows server 2012 File Server - Corrupt Images

    Hi Guys,
I migrated a windows file share from Windows server 2003 to a new virtual windows server 2012 data centre server. All appears ok except for one issue
There are numerous word docs on this file share (over 300 pages) with images in them (jpegs, pngs ) At times when users open these docs on the new server the images in them are corrupted. When a local copy of the same file is opened all appears fine. It has
happened on a few docs now but I cant pin point why this is happening. Obviously it was not happening on the 2003 server. I have no dedup turned on or compression. I simply copied the files over and ntfs permissons. It does not happen all the time so I am
thinking it is some read/write issue in 2012. The server reports no high cpu or memory at any time.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks

Hi. Did you ever get to the bottom of this problem?
I have the exact same issue after migrating from Server 2003 to 2012. Occasionally Office files that include images stored on the share will get corrupted with the top of some of the images showing normally and then blurring or noise in the rest of them.
I can usually restore a copy of the file made by shadow copy but the corruption of images should not be happening in the first place. Some users are losing confidence in storing their work on the share which is potentially a big issue.
I am pretty convinced that this is an issue with Server 2012 as we have not migrated from Office (2010 Enterprise) and files stores on 2003 servers on or PC hard drives are not affected.
    Thanks!

  • Anyone using DPM 2012 R2 for backup on Windows 8.1 64-bit laptops? - any issues like freezes/crashes?

We've been using this for a a few months now, still testing. Feedback initially good, but now noticed users reporting back their laptops are freezing, typically when using Outlook. It's been a hard one to figure out, but the only common factor we can see
to prevent this happening again is to disable or remove the DPM client.
We are looking into all possibilities like anti-virus exclusions etc, but just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before, got any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi,
Try this - On the client - Increase the WaitInMSPerRequestForClientRead to 100 to take the load off the client and  DPM when synchronizations are in progress.

On some client computers, you may notice the computer running slow when a backup is in progress. You can improve the computer’s responsiveness by setting the following registry key DWORD.
    Key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Agent\ClientProtection
    Value
    WaitInMSPerRequestForClientRead
    Data
    50
    Type
    DWORD
    NOTE: Optimizing WaitInMSPerRequestForClientRead settings
The default value for WaitInMSPerRequestForClientRead DWORD is 50 (32H). This means the dpm agent will wait 50ms per read cycle to locate changed data. You can increase the value to 75 or 100 to reduce IO on the disk to improve machine responsiveness at
the cost of longer backup times. If you want to increase backup speed at the expense of responsiveness, reduce the value to 40 or 30.

  • DPM 2012 R2 fails to back up one of two disks on file server

Good day! I've built a new DPM 2012 R2 server and migrated or re-created jobs from my older 2012 SP1
DPM servers as trying to upgrade them was not working out. The DPM R2 server is running great besides this one issue. The problem is with a file and print server at a remote office. Since it has around 750 GB of user data on it I chose to do manual replica
creation on the data disk, (E:) but created the C:\ drive replica normally, over the WAN. The manual replica creation was successful, and the initial consistency check and recovery point creation worked as expected, however, since then it will not create another
RP or run a CC on the E:\ drive. Recovery points on the C:\ drive are being created properly. When I try to run a CC I get this error: "An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005))" I've
tried to drop protection on the two directories of the E:\ drive (retaining data) and re-create, but that didn't help. I've even done a recovery from the initial RP to verify that it was created properly, and that worked as well.

Open command prompt on target file and print server, change directory to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\Temp> and run below command
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\Temp>find /i "[0x80070005]"
    DPMRACur*.errlog >C:\Errors.txt
Paste the output here from C:\Errors.txt

  • Saved State Backup on Server 2012 R2 and DPM 2012

Hello, Our environment in currently in transition with planned migration to 2012 R2. In the mean time, we have a 5 node 2008 R2 hyper-v cluster with CSV.  We are currently using DPM 2012 for our backup.  I have read multiple postings about child
partition backup and saved state and all that seems to make relative sense.
What I have noticed is that in our existing environment (2008 R2 Hyper-v, DPM 2012) that all 2012 R2 Virtual servers setup in our hyper-v cluster show 'Backup Using Saved State'.  All virtual 2003 - 2008 R2 servers on the same cluster show as 'Backup
    using Child Partition Snapshot'.
So, the question: is this normal and the only way virtual 2012 R2 servers can be backed up in our environment? Or, is there some configuration on the virtual 2012 R2 servers that needs to be done so that the Hyper-v VSS writers show that it can be backed
up using Child Partition Snapshot. (Yes, I viewed the Hyper-V VSS Writer Caption: for each system on all the nodes and no, I am not talking about what is displayed in DPM 2012 since I understand it may not truly reflect the current backup method)

Have you already checked typical reason for DPM doing saved state backup? If not, find them below.
    Also, do your VM have
SCSI controller added? Prior to using Veeam as our primary backup solution, we leveraged DPM and confronted the very same issue. Fortunately, by adding ISCSI controllers to VMs in question we were able to solve the problem.
Conditions when DPM fails to back up Hyper-V virtual machines in an online state
By default, System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM) performs a backup of a Hyper-V Virtual Machine (VM) in an online state. However, DPM cannot back up a Hyper-V VM in an online state, if one or more of the following
    conditions are true:
Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
The virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
The virtual machine has one or more non-NTFS based volumes.
The virtual machine Cluster Resource Group in a cluster setup is offline.
The virtual machine is not in a running state.
A ShadowStorage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.
An App-V drive is installed on the virtual machine that creates a non-NTFS volume.
These conditions are set by the Hyper-V writer. In such a case, the VM is put in a saved state before a snapshot of host volumes are taken (except when the VM is turned off) for a backup. The Hyper-V writer adds the VM in the following format:
For offline backups: Backup Using Saved State\<VMName>
For online backups: Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\<VMName>
Additional reason if we have less than 300MB free space on a volume in the guest.
    Kind regards, Leonardo.
