Server 2012 file server loses connection to passthrough disk

Hi!
We have a virtual fileserver (server 2012), on a server 2012 hyper-v cluster. This server uses a passthrough disk as the main file store (D:\). This disk contains all the user data, profiles etc. Data is stored on a Dell Powervault md3220 (Direct Attached
Storage). The other two virtual disks on the storage have no issues.
I contacted Dell support and they couldn't find an issue with the storage.
A few days ago the D: drive of the file server became unaccesable for no apparent reason, the server became unresponsive and the only way to get it up and running was to shutdown the file server and reboot it. After that the disk became accesible again,
but the issue repeated after a few minutes. After that, it worked for about three days.
A couple of days later we had the same issue.
I can't find any apparent causes in the logs and searching the web leads me nowhere (maybe one topic on this forum, but I'm not sure if it's the same issue, but it doesn't have a solution anyway).
I really hope someone has an idea on how to solve it, because it interferes with the final exams taking place at the moment.

Hi,
Did you access the D: drive of the file server locally or on a client? There is a similar thread, please go through it to help troubleshoot this issue:

  • Hyper-V 2012 High Availability using Windows Server 2012 File Server Storage

    Hi Guys,
Need your expertise regarding hyper-v high availability. We setup 2 hyper-v 2012 host in our infra for our domain consolidation project. Unfortunately, we don't have hardware storage that is said to be a requirement that we can use to create a failover cluster
for hyper-v host to implement HA. Here's the setup:
    Host1
    HP Proliant L380 G7
    Windows Server 2012 Std
Hyper-V role, Failover Cluster Manager and File and Storage Services installed
    Host2
    Dell PowerEdge 2950
    Windows Server 2012 Std
Hyper-V role, Failover Cluster Manager and File and Storage Services installed
    Storage
    Dell PowerEdge 6800
    Windows Server 2012 Std
    File and Storage Services installed
I'm able to configure the new feature about Shared Nothing Live Migration - i'm able to move VM's back and fort between my hosts without storage. But this is planned and proactive approach. My concern is to have my hyper-v host to become highly available in
the event of system failure. If my host1 dies, the VMs should go/move to host2 and vice versa. In setting this up, i believe i need to enable the failover clustering between my hyper-v hosts which i already did but upon validation, it says "No disks
were found on which to perform cluster validation tests." Is it possible to cluster it using just a regular windows file server? I've read about SMB 3.0 and i've configured it as well i'm able to save VMs on my file server, but i don't think that my hyper-v
    hosts are already highly available.
Any feedback and suggestions or recommendation is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Your shared storage is a single point of failure with this scenario so I would not consider the whole setup as a production configuration... Also setup is both slow (all I/O is travelling down the wire to storage server, running VMs from DAS is ages faster)
and expensive (third server + extra Windows license). I would think twice about what you do and either deploy a built-in VM replication technologies (Hyper-V Replica) and apps built-in clustering features that does not require shared storage (SQL Server and
Database Mirroring for example, BTW what workload do you run?) or use some third-party software creating fault tolerant shared storage from DAS or investing into physical shared storage hardware (HA one of course).
    Hi VR38DETT,
Thanks for responding. The hosts will cater a domain controller (on each host), Web filtering software (Websense), Anti-Virus (McAfee ePO), WSUS and an Auditserver as of the moment. Is the Hyper-V Replica somewhat give "high availability" to VMs or Hyper-V
hosts? Also, is the cluster required in order to implement it? Haven't tried that but worth a try.

  • Server 2012 File Server Cluster Shadow Copies Disappear Some Time After Failover

    Hello,
I've seen similar questions posted on here before however I have yet to find a solution that worked for us so I'm adding my process in hopes someone can point out where I went wrong.
The problem: After failover, shadow copies are only available for a short time on the secondary server.  Before the task to create new shadow copies happens the shadow copies are deleted.  Failing back shows them missing on the primary server as
    well when this happens.
We have a 2 node (hereafter server1 and server2) cluster with a quorum disk.  There are 8 disk resources which are mapped to the cluster via iScsi.  4 of these disks are setup as storage and the other 4 are currently set up as shadow copy volumes
    for their respective storage volume.
Previously we weren't using separate shadow copy volumes and seeing the same issue described in the topic title.  I followed two other topics on here that seemed close and then setup the separate shadow copy volumes however it has yet to alleviate the
issue.  These are the two other topics :
    Topic 1: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/ba0d2568-53ac-4523-a49e-4e453d14627f/failover-cluster-server-file-server-role-is-clustered-shadow-copies-do-not-seem-to-travel-to?forum=winserverClustering
    Topic 2: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/c884c31b-a50e-4c9d-96f3-119e347a61e8/shadow-copies-missing-after-failover-on-2008-r2-cluster
After reading both of those topics I did the following:
    1) Add the 4 new volumes to the cluster for shadow copies
    2) Made each storage volume dependent on it's shadow copy volume in FCM
    3) Went to the currently active node directly and opened up "My Computer", I then went to the properties of each storage volume and set up shadow copies to go to the respective shadow copy volume drive letter with correct size for spacing, etc.
    4) I then went back to FCM and right clicked on the corresponding storage volume and choose "Configure Shadow Copy" and set the schedule for 12:00 noon and 5:00 PM.
    5) I noticed that on the nodes the task was created and that the task would failover between the nodes and appeared correct.
    6) Everything appears to failover correctly, all volumes come up, drive letters are same, shadow copy storage settings are the same, and 4 scheduled tasks for shadow copy appear on the current node after failover.
Thinking everything was setup according to best practice I did some testing by changing file contents throughout the day making sure that previous versions were created as scheduled on server1.  I then rebooted Server1 to simulate failure.  Server2
picked up the role within about 10 seconds and files were avaiable.  I checked and I could still see previous versions for the files after failover that were created on server1.  Unfortunately that didn't last as the next day before noon I was going
to make more changes to files to ensure that not only could we see the shadow copies that were created when Server1 owned the file server role but also that the copies created on Server2 would be seen on failback.  I was disappointed to discover that
the shadow copies were all gone and failing back didn't produce them either.
Does anyone have any insight into this issue?  I must be missing a switch somewhere or perhaps this isn't even possible with our cluster type based on this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc779378%28v=ws.10%29.aspx
Now here's an interesting part, shadow copies on 1 of our 4 volumes have been retained from both nodes through the testing, but I can't figure out what makes it different though I do suspect that perhaps the "Disk#s" in computer management / disk
management perhaps need to be the same between servers?  For example, on server 1 the disk #s for cluster volume 1 might be "Disk4" but on server 2 the same volume might be called "Disk7", however I think that operations like this
and shadow copy are based on the disk GUID and perhaps this shouldn't matter.
Edit, checked on the disk numbers, I see no correlation between what I'm seeing in shadow copy and what is happening to the numbers.  All other items, quotas, etc fail and work correctly despite these diffs:
    Disk Numbers on Server 1:
Format: "shadow/storerelation volume = Disk Number"
    aHome storage1 =   16
    aShared storage2 = 09
    sHome storage3 =   01
    sShared storage4 = 04
    aHome shadow1 =   10
    aShared shadow2 = 11
    sHome shadow3 =   02
    sShared shadow4 = 05
    Disk numbers on Server 2:
    aHome storage1 = 16 (SAME)
    aShared storage2 = 04 (DIFF)
    sHome storage3 = 05 (DIFF)
    sShared storage4 = 08 (DIFF)
    aHome shadow1 = 10 (SAME)
    aShared shadow2 = 11 (SAME)
    sHome shadow3 = 06 (DIFF)
    sShared shadow4 = 09 (DIFF)
Thanks in advance for your assistance/guidance on this matter!

    Hello Alex,
Thank you for your reply.  I will go through your questions in order as best I can, though I'm not the backup expert here.
    1) "Did you see any event ID when the VSS fail?
please offer us more information about your environment, such as what type backup you are using the soft ware based or hard ware VSS device."
I saw a number of events on inspection.  Interestingly enough, the event ID 60 issues did not occur on the drive where shadow copies did remain after the two reboots.  I'm putting my event notes in a code block to try to preserve formatting/readability.
I've written down events from both server 1 and 2 in this code block, documenting the first reboot causing the role to move to server 2 and then the second reboot going back to server 1:

We are using Symantec NetBackup.  The client agent is installed on both server1 and 2.  We're backing them up based on the complete drive letter for each storage volume (this makes recovery easier).  I believe this is what you would call "software
based VSS".  We don't have the infrastructure/setup to do hardware based snapshots.  The drives reside on a compellent san mapped to the cluster via iScsi.

  • Windows server 2012 File Server - Corrupt Images

    Hi Guys,
I migrated a windows file share from Windows server 2003 to a new virtual windows server 2012 data centre server. All appears ok except for one issue
There are numerous word docs on this file share (over 300 pages) with images in them (jpegs, pngs ) At times when users open these docs on the new server the images in them are corrupted. When a local copy of the same file is opened all appears fine. It has
happened on a few docs now but I cant pin point why this is happening. Obviously it was not happening on the 2003 server. I have no dedup turned on or compression. I simply copied the files over and ntfs permissons. It does not happen all the time so I am
thinking it is some read/write issue in 2012. The server reports no high cpu or memory at any time.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks

Hi. Did you ever get to the bottom of this problem?
I have the exact same issue after migrating from Server 2003 to 2012. Occasionally Office files that include images stored on the share will get corrupted with the top of some of the images showing normally and then blurring or noise in the rest of them.
I can usually restore a copy of the file made by shadow copy but the corruption of images should not be happening in the first place. Some users are losing confidence in storing their work on the share which is potentially a big issue.
I am pretty convinced that this is an issue with Server 2012 as we have not migrated from Office (2010 Enterprise) and files stores on 2003 servers on or PC hard drives are not affected.
    Thanks!

  • Slow applications start from win 2012 file server using win 7 workstations

I hope someone can help me with why applications are slow to load i have replaced a 8 year old server running  win 2003 and replaced it with dell t620 running win 2012 r2 it is like 20 times faster but it is slower than the old server. the office has
7 win 7 x64 machines all our applications are running from win 2012 file server. The server is set up as following the server runs with two hyper-v machines one machine runs ad, file server, dhcp, dns and printer server and the other is domino server and remote
    desktop.
the machine is more than capable but it is not so i started reading after i run out of ideas. i looked every where but the issue is with the server after trying everything else i did a simple test If i go to the application folder and click on it apps load
instantly if i then type a unc path it takes from instant load to 3 and a bit seconds the same as the workstations. The same speed if I use ip address.
    network cards are intel
i would really appreciate if somebody has suggestions that i could try
    thank you

    Hi,
Do you mean that applications in the application folder start slowly when you access the application folder on the Windows 2012 R2 file server from Windows 7 workstations using UNC path or IP address. Do all the files in the application folder have the same
issue? Please create a shared folder on the file server, then access the shared folder from Windows 7 workstations to check if the issue still exists.
You could disable SMBv3 on server 2012 to check if the issue related to SMB protocol.

  • Server 2012 Print Server and DNS CNAME - setspn advice

    Hi,
I am building a new Server 2012 Print server. What I would like to do is utilise a DNS CNAME when I deploy the printer, rather than its host name.
I have used 'setspn' to accomplish this, running the following command:
    setspn -A HOST/<ALIAS> <hostname>
Now when I browse the alias I can see the installed printer. The problem I have is when I then deploy this via Group Policy it uses the servers host name instead, but it does work. If I manually edit
the GPO to reflect the alias name instead it does not deploy the printer. Moreover the indication on the 2012 server has gone so it does not see that it has any printers deployed.
When I browse the computers host name and try to manually install the printer it will state that it is downloading the drivers but never seems to complete. If I browse it's alias and try the same
thing I receive an error stating that it couldn't connect to the printer. The client machine in this instance is Windows 7 SP1 x64.
What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Howard

I've been struggling with the same problem, for a Windows 2012 R2 print server.
I've added SPN entries and registry tweaks (OptionalHostnames, DisableStrictNameChecking, DnsOnWire etc.), but still couldn't connect printers using the alias, even though I could browse shares on the server, using the alias.
While not explicitly covering 2012 R2, this KB article helped me:
    KB2546625.
Adding the alias to the local hosts file solved it for me.
Now, I wanted to be sure that I wasn't applying a bunch of unnecessary tweaks, so I went ahead and removed all registry tweaks (including DnsOnWire mentioned in the KB article), the SPN entry for the alias and rebooted - it still works!
In my case, maybe on Windows Server 2012 R2 in general, all that was needed was to add the alias in the local hosts file.

  • Moving user profiles from Server 2012 with RDS services to User profile disks Server 2012R2

Hello i have a question about moving my C:\users profiles.
My current settings on the servers are:
    AD-Server 2012
    SQL-Server 2012
TS- server with RDS roles (RDwebacces, RDs broker, RD session host) 2012
everything about user profiles is now in C:\Users
My new settings for the server will be:
    AD-ActiveDirectory - server
    SQL-Server
TS1- RDS (RDwebacces, broker, RDS server group management) 2012R2 (I have enabeld userProfileDisks to Filesistem server)
    TS2- RDS(Session host) load balance 2012R2
TS3- RDS (Session host) load balance 2012
FileSistem - server ( here i will have on E: partition the new functionality UserProfileDisks) 2012R2
So is there a way to move profiles from TS - C:\Users to FileSistem - E:\UserProfileDisks
I am new to this so any idea wil be helpful.

    Hi,
If the UPD is configured on the server which holds existing user profiles, just select the option:
store all user settings and data inside the profile disk.
Since you are moving user profiles between different servers, then user profile contents need to be migrated manually.

  • Creation of System Stored Procedure in SQL Server 2012 & SQL Server 2012 R2.

    Hi all,
I am stuck at a point I am looking for a system stored procedure named 'sp_dboption' in SQL Server 2012  & R2 but could not find.
Searched for it on the net and found that, this stored procedure 'sp_dboption' is now obsolete. So I tried to copy the content of 'sp_dboption' stored procedure from SQL Server 2008 R2 and create new system stored procedure with this name 'sp_dboption' in
SQL Server 2012 but was unable to create the system stored procedure.
Can you guys please tell me how to create system stored procedure in SQL Server 2012 & SQL Server 2012 R2. The reason of why I want to achieve this is because I have used 'sp_dboption' system stored procedure  in my application to create a database.
As 'sp_dbotion' stored procedure is present in SQL Server 2008 R2 I am able to create the database in SQL server 2008 R2 but not in SQL server 2012.
Can you please guide me how to create system stored procedure. I am out of luck.
Please assist me, thanks & looking for help at the earliest. Hope someone will come to the fore and help me.

    Hi Vishwajeet,
If you tried to create any object in the sys schema, you will get the error below.
The specified schema name "sys" either does not exist or you do not have permission to use it.
So I am afraid creating any object in sys schema is not supported by SQL Server. Here is a similar link for your reference.
How to create table in SYS schema in SQL Server?
Though sp_dboption is not in SQL Server 2012, does creating a user-defined one with the same content in 2008 make any difference in your business? You just need to specify the fully qualified name dbname.dbo.sp_dboption.
If you are still interested in creating a system sp_dboption, you can register it with the
    sp_ms_marksystemobject.

  • Difference between SQL SERVER 2008 & SQL SERVER 2012 & SQL SERVER 2014

    Difference between SQL SERVER 2008 & SQL SERVER 2012 & SQL SERVER 2014 ?

What sort of databases do you have OLTP? Data warehouse? What requirements do you have for High Availability?
The main features for SQL 2012/2014, as I see it:
o  Support for window functions, which makes it possible to write fast queries for running totals, sliding windows etc.
o  Columnstore indexes, which can speed up your data warehouse enormously. But of no interest for OLTP. Only writable in SQL 2014.
o  AlwaysOn and Availability Groups, a vastly improve story for high availability and disaster recovery.
o  try_convert/try_cast, you can now easily filter out values from a column which does not convert to a number. A small but essential feature.
o  In memory-OLTP, a new in-memory engine in SQL 2014. This far with very limited feature set, and quite specialised.
Of the points above, the second and third require Enterprise Edition, the first and fourth are in all editions. For the last, I don't think Microsoft has announced anything yet.
There are also new stuff in the BI area, but that's out of my league.
And, oh, there is a new licensing model - which I think is holding more than one customer back.

    Hello,
This seems not related to SQL Server but more related to IIS.
Try setting the trust level to full using the following article:

  • Inline upgrade from server 2012 to server 2012r2

just wanted to see peoples experience for upgrading server 2012 to server 2012r2 on an inline upgrade?  is this ok to do or a reimage is best?
    thanks

    Hi iworkhere,
I have a Windows Server 2012 DC and a Windows 2012 member server in my lab environment. I have upgraded them to Windows Server 2012 R2 with no issue. After upgrading, you will
have a Windows.old folder under C:\ and as there is no disk cleanup tool in Windows Server versions without the Desktop Experience feature, you may have to delete it manually if needed.
In addition, if no data needs to be kept in Windows Server 2012, you can choose either a clean installation or a upgrading. Personally, I prefer the clean installation.
    Hope this helps.

  • Connection Broker (Server 2012) what server to connect to ?

I have setup 3 Windows Server 2012 servers.
    Server A running:
    Remote Desktop Services Licensing
    Remote Desktop Web Access
    Remote Desktop Connection Broker
    Server B running:
    Remote Desktop Services Session Host
    Server C running:
    Remote Desktop Services Session Host
In old days you had to connect (with your RDP client) to the server running Session Directory, then you was redirected to one of the Terminal Service servers.
    What about now ?
Does clients have to connect to the Connection Broker server to be directed to right session host ?
Should I create a DNS record that points to the Connection Broker and let RDP clients connect to that DNS address ?
Or should I create a round robin DNS address consisting of server B and server C ?
I'm a little confused on that matter, so hope anyone can help :-)
This is my first Remote Desktop Services setup on Server 2012

    Hi,
In Server 2012/2012 R2 the initial connection goes to the RD Connection Broker.  Yes, if necessary you would create a DNS record that points to the broker.
Also in 2012 a user would normally connect via RD Web Access, or RemoteApp and Desktop Connections (RADC), or Remote Resources instead of manually opening the Remote Desktop client and connecting that way.  If they connect using the above methods they
will use a pre-configured .rdp file that has the target collection contained within it.  The broker needs this target collection so that it knows where to send the user.
If you want users to manually launch a connection (without RDWeb, RADC, etc.) then you can use a non-IE web browser to download the .rdp files from RDWeb and give them to your users.  Another alternative is to set the default collection in the broker's
registry so that if someone connects to the broker without specifying the target collection it will know to automatically send them to the default collection.

  • Server 2012 RTM Remote Desktop Connection Broker Role Won't Install

    Hey guys,
I have been searching for and trying fixes for this for 3 days, and I've gotten no where.  Thanks in advance for trying to help me out.
    Here's the situation:
I have a brand new installation of the Windows Server 2012 Datacenter 64-Bit RTM from MSDN.  This is my one and only server (just my personal one for home), so I'm using this single server to run all of the services that I need.  After a fresh
installation, I added the AD and DNS roles and promoted the server to the PDC.  Then I go to add the Remote Desktop Virtualization Services (the VM virtualization role).  The installation fails, but I can't find any explanation as to why.
I've wiped out the OS and reinstalled from scratch at leat 15 times, trying various combinations, fixes, approaches, etc.  including powershell, Remote Desktop Services Deployment, standard role-based deployment, etc.
Using the role-based deployment, I can get every 'Remote Desktop Services' component to install except the Remote Desktop Connection Broker.  I've tried enabling RDMSUI_TRACING, but didn't get any information at all as to why it's failing.  I also
    cannot find RDMSDeploymentUI.txt log.
I've also tried to deploy this using Powershell using this command:
    New-SessionDeployment [-ConnectionBroker] <string> [-WebAccessServer] <string> [-SessionHost] <string>
That particular item does provide some error messages, but they seem to complain about the Session Host not being able to install due to not being able to find the connection string key in the registry for the Windows Internal Database.  However, I can
get the session host and every other component to install using role-based deployment, except the Connection Broker.
I've run an SFC scan, which found no issues.   I've also tried applying the one update available in Microsoft Update, and tried it without applying that update (reinstalling between attempts of course).
I'm completely at a loss.  Has anyone encountered this before?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Is there a powershell command for just installing the Connection Broker that might provide some additional error information, or any
    information at all?
I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could offer.  I'm willing to try anything.  Thanks for taking the time to read this.
    Sincerely,
    Dominick

    Also Found this:
    1. You try to install the Remote Desktop Connection Broker (RDCB) on a server that also has the Active Directory Domain Server (domain
controller) role installed. This configuration is not supported by Microsoft. You need to install the RDCB on a server that does not have this role installed. See: Remote Desktop Services role cannot co-exist with AD DS role on Windows Server 2012 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2799605
    2. If you don’t have the Active Directory Domain Service install, this issue might be caused by the Windows internal database (WID) that
the connection broker installs and the Windows Update KB2821895. If you have KB2821895 installed, unfortunately you can not uninstall this KB. Try to install the Remote Desktop Connection Broker (RDBC) role on a server that does not have this Windows update.
Note: There is currently no official communication from Microsoft that here is an issue with RDBC and KB2821895. However, try the RDBC installation
without this KB and see what happens.

  • Sql server 2012 express - tcp/ip connection to named instance using dynamic port not working

I have a named instance on a SQL 2012 Express server that won't connect via TCP/IP when wanting to connect off of the dynamic port.  I can connect via shared memory locally on the server.   I can connect to the namespace when specifying the
dynamic port listed in the configuration manager.
This is the only named instance on the server and it is not the default.
    TCP/IP is enabled
    Allow Remote connections is enabled
the server browser service is running
I can connect via the dynamic port number
I am testing the connection locally on the server, so I don't believe a firewall is the issue.  I get the same results if I test it from a remote computer.
When using the sqlcmd (sqlcmd -S tcp:SQLSRVR\NAMEINST -E) I get the message that "the requested protocol isn't supported [xfffffffff]".   The command (sqlcmd -S tcp:SQLSRVR\NAMEINST,59992 -E) works.
Through SSMS, I get the message "the connection was actively refused".
On other boxes, I can connect with the named instance without having to specify the port.
I have looked through the sql logs and nothing much shows up.  The log does show that is listening on the port # for ipv4 and ipv6.   There is also a line in there talking about the SPN not being registered and not to worry about it if
you are not using Kerberos.  I logged in through shared memory and it said I was using NTLM.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi clw,
I’m writing to follow up with you on this post. According to your description, I do a test, if you configure the database engine to listen on a specific TCP port (59992), and
the port is opened in the firewall. If you want to connect to the SQL Server instance, you 'd better to
    use the port number.
In my opinion, by default, the default instance of the Database Engine uses port 1433, usually, if you have configured the server to listen on a non-default port number, when an instance of SQL Server uses dynamic port allocation, the connection string that
is built at the SQL Server client does not specify the destination TCP/IP port unless the user or the programmer explicitly specifies the port. Therefore, the SQL Server client library queries the server on UDP port 1434 to collect the information about the
    destination instance of SQL Server.
If UDP port 1434 is disabled, the SQL Server client cannot dynamically determine the port of the named instance of SQL Server. Therefore, the SQL Server client may be unable to connect to the named instance of SQL Server. In this situation, the SQL Server
client must specify the dynamically allocated port where the named instance of SQL Server is listening.
For more information about configuring an instance of SQL Server to listen on a specific TCP port or dynamic port, you can review the following article.
    https://support.transfrm.com/entries/503111-How-to-configure-an-instance-of-SQL-Server-to-listen-on-a-specific-TCP-port-or-dynamic-port
