DPM 2012 R2 - Database Error 943 in Restore Pane

Hi all,
this morning we came upon a problem with our DPM server. It is on version 4.2.1273.0 (UR4), running on 2012 Server German with the latest patches.
When opening the restore pane, we get an error window mentioning a database inconsistency (ID: 943). The dpm client closes then. All other dpm functions seem to work correctly. What we have tried already:
DBCC checkdb yields no errors. The sql database is online, also all backup operations of dpm run normally.
A dpmsync -sync does not change the problem.
Trying a restore via powershell, the powershell window closes as soon as a Get-DPMRecoverypoint is issued. So the problem seems not only dpm interface-related.
The last backup of the database is from 10/29 when the UR4 was installed (shame on us!). Restoring this DB renders the DPM service inoperable (missing sql stored procedure). So we went back to a backup of today that shows the error described above.
We have not tried a restore after UR4 was installed, but definitely within a month before, where everything worked fine.
Any ideas? Does it make sense to uninstall UR4? Any advanced troubleshooting to find the 'inconsistency' in the DB?
Thanks for your help,
Best,
Markus

Unfortunately I am not able to find any related entries. I checked eventlog, SQLserver logs and the DPM logs under DPM\Temp. I have added the Traceloglevel entry to the registry and set it to 0x400. Again no entries with current timestamp in the dpm log.
A verbose log setting fills a 15MB log file in about 5 seconds...
The tape backup did not run over the weekend. I get a number of failed SQL Jobs in the event log:
SQL Server Scheduled Job 'b176171f-43f8-41c0-aa05-8c7208080c19' (0x2E83A67F375A1E4098FE306980DC2328) - Status: Failed - Invoked on: 2014-11-17 12:30:00 - Message: The job failed.  The Job was invoked by Schedule 27148 (Schedule 1).  The last step
to run was step 1 (Default JobStep).
I am tempted to do a complete reinstall of the DPM server and OS; my problem is that I lose all current backups doing so. Running out of ideas.
Best,
Markus

  • DPM 2012 R2 installation error ID: 812

    Server 2012 R2 Datacenter (virtual).
Installed SQL server 2012 SP1 locally, with all default settings.
Changed accounts according to DPM requirements for agent, server and reporting services
DPM setup complains as below, reporting service is running and, I believe, it is configured correctly, any clue ?
(error log is available, but does not give me valuable information).
    EDIT:
Just realized that reporting services relies on web server so I installed IIS and fiddled a little with reporting services encryption key which brought me to the next error as follows:
Pasted from error log (just prior to error):
Information : Querying WMI Namespace: \\dpm01\root\cimv2 for query: SELECT * FROM Win32_Service WHERE Name='SQLSERVERAGENT'
Information : Sql Agent account name = ad\DPM01$
Information : Add user: ad\DPM01$ to local group: Distributed COM Users on server: DPM01
I don't know the ad\DPM01$ user, however it looks like it is the builtin Local System
I also tried to add this builtin to the group manually, but DPM still reports error.
Is DPM really designed to be so complicated and giving so much headache ?
Anyone able to help me out ?

  • SCCM 2012 SQL database error while installation.

    Hi,
I'm trying to install SCCM 2012 R2 in a test Lab. While completing installation I'm getting an error message "setup has encountered fatal errors during database initialization. check the log for details. click the view log button for more information"
and installation finishes successfully. I'm using SQL server 2008 R2 with CU6 installed. SCCM Prerequisite checker shows only SQL memory and WSUS package warnings. Still I'm able to finish installation but not able connect SCCM. I'm installing Primary site.
My system is running on Win 2k8 R2 SP1.
    Please help.
    Regards,
    Dhananjay

In my experience you can get strange problems if you extract the ISO to a folder and run the setup from there (that seems to be what you have done).
Try mounting the ISO directly and I believe you will have better success. You are using W2008R2 so you will need a 3rd party app (Virtual CloneDrive is a good one).
(Obviously if this is a VM you can just add the ISO to the DVD drive)

  • DPM 2012 R2 install error ID:811

    Hi
I have a new installation of
    win2012R2+SQL2012withSP1 same physical server
    .Server is in domain.
When the installation occur server time this error:

    I already reinstall SQL server
    ,recommended changes locations
    etc...

    I finally solved the
    problem.
First I tried to install using a different
    server where I already running
    MS SQL everything went fine.
    SQL Server uses instances !!
    I try DPMBD transmission
    over dpmbackup <> dpsync,
but without success did not lead to
    the origin server to import
    at all.
    So I did re-install SQL
Server, but I did not use defoult
    MSSQLSERVER, but I named
    it. Account all were consistent
with anything else and did not alter the

  • Moving the DPM 2012 SQL Database to another SQL Server

I have 2 DPM Servers running and I would like to move those SQL Dbs onto another SQL Server. I know during the install you can select whether or not you want to install SQL or use another instance, but I dont want to re-install the whole thing and start
over. Is there any easy way to do this?

    Hi,
in my opinion, you can stop with this Walkthrough after step 6, dont think that you Need to do a sync or consistency check.

  • DPM 2012 R2 journal wrap error

    Hi,
i try to backup my active directory Using DPM 2012 R2.Below error has occurred.
A journal wrap error has occurred on the change journal, and therefore DPM is unable to track any more changes or may have missed some changes for the data source C:\ on DC-Name.domin (ID 30117 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909D1)

    Hi,
In the alert, Click the link to run synchronization with consistency check.
If the problem persists, you can increase the change journal size or configure the current protection group to synchronize more often. To change the synchronization schedule, select the protection group in the Protection task area, and in the Actions pane,
click Modify protection group. To change the change journal size, click Modify disk allocation, select the Protected Server tab, click Modify, and then change the space allocated.
If you consistently get that error, then it may be antivirus s/w that is causing the USN to wrap.

  • DPM 2012 R2 catalog failing, not all database items are available for restore

I recently started protecting my SharePoint 2013 site using DPM 2012 R2.  I was able to get item level recovery working, but not all of the database items are showing in the recovery section.  I go get the warning "DPM failed to gather item
level catalog for 1 database(s) of the SharePoint Farm Some of the recovery points for these databases in the farm would be associated with an earlier successful catalog. (ID 3133)"
I have looked on the SharePoint front end web server in the WssCmdletsWrapperCurr log file and I do not see any exception there.
It it is strange because I do get the option to restore some items, just not all of them.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Resizing the boot partition (usually C:) should not effect DPM in any way.  DPM writes directly to it's volumes contained in the storage pool and not through the mount points on the C: drive.    So is the DPM UI showing
missing volume next to some data sources ?   Try doing a DPM disk rescan and see if that removes the missing volume flag.

  • Can I restore a DPM database from DPM 2012 directly to DPM 2012 R2?

    HI,
I have to completely reinstall SQL and DPM on a server.  I know the backups are OK on the storage, and I know I have a good backup of the database (dpmbackup -db, etc.)
It was running on DPM 2012, no SP1 (I think), I have anyway to upgrade it to 2012 R2.  I'd like to know if it is possible to restore the database with "dpmsync -restoredb -dbloc..." directly into DPM 2012 R2.  I would install
DPM 2012 R2 directly instead or installing DPM 2012, restoring DB, installing UR3, installing SP1, Installing UR3 for SP1... and finally upgrading to 2012 R2... Long run with a lot of possibilities of issues.
I just can't find the answer... Somebody knows if it is possible?
Thanks a lot for you help!

    Hi,
    <snip>
    I ran into problems upgrading from DPM 2012 SP1 to 2012 R2.
    <snip>
I assume this was the virtual machine ? You should troubleshoot that and once that is upgraded, you can restore that DB on the physical machine.  Make sure it's the same machine name and on the network before performing the upgrade.

  • DPM 2012 R2 unable to connect to Database after failed Update Rollup 4 Installation

We have a DPM 2012 R2 Server with SQL Server 2012 installed locally.
We tried to install Rollup 4 for DPM 2012 R2 (KB3009516) using Windows Update
and it failed with error code 0x80070643. Now when we open the DPM Console
it is totally empty (no Protection Groups, Servers, Disks, just like a fresh install).
In the eventlog we get a lot of Errors and warnings:
    Event 941 (MSDPM)
Unable to connect to the DPM database.  Make sure that SQL Server is running and that it is configured correctly.
Cannot open database "DPMDB" requested by the login. The login failed.
    Event 4209 (MSDPM)
The description for Event ID 4209 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
DPM Writer encountered an internal error.  Please restart the DPM Writer service, and then try the backup operation again. For additional troubleshooting information, review the application event log and the DPM Troubleshooting Guide.
Event 107 (Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER)
Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database.
    Event 274 (SQLISService110)
    Microsoft SSIS Service:
Registry setting specifying configuration file does not exist.
Attempting to load default config file.
Then there are some Errors/warnings from SQLSERVERAGENT about failed scheduled Jobs.
I think the failed Installation changed some database Settings, so that now the DPM Console
    cant access the database anymore.
I would be happy if someone can help me getting this Server working again!

Our biggest problem is, that the DPM is not working any more. So there is no chance to backup the SQL Server via DPM.
I think the main problem is that DPM have no access to the database. Every time I start the DPM Application, I get an error "verify that the DPM service is running on this computer". In the eventlog are many errors that the msdpm service was unable
to connect to DPM Database. Another "information" is that the user 'nt authority\system' failed to open the database of dpm.
We've tried to reinstall the DPM but its still the same problem. I suppose that is a corrupt database.
Tomorrow I try to restore the database and hope it will be the solution of our problem.

  • DPM 2012 Install Fails, The Database was not Created ID 811

    Hi.
I've tried installing DPM on a Standalone Server (SQL + DPM), and get the "Database was not Created" error. I initially tried DPM 2012 R2, and found that there is an issue with Disjoint Namespaces, so went to DPM 2012 SP1, but still getting
    the same error.
The Install Account has full access rights (sysadmin) to the DPM SQL Instance, however cannot seem to get it right. The account using to do the install has full Enterprise admin, Domain Admin, Backup Operators & Administrators rights.
When opeining SQL Managemet studio, I can see the database has been created but the setup fails and requires me to revert. Here is the last few lines of the Install Log File, please help I always mark as answer.

  • DPM 2012 UR3 Agent Update Error: HRESULT E_FAIL...DCOM Error

My DPM Server is Windows 2008 R2 SP1 with a locally installed SQL and DPM Server and fully patched. My Workstations are all Windows 7 Ultimate x64, fully patched. I have manually installed the DPM RTM Agent and pushed the UR2 update from the DPM Server
without any challenges or issues. I have SCEP running with process exclusions for the DPM services on the WS and DPM Server. I’ve been running DPM 2012 RTM and then UR2 without any issues or challenges to-date.
I have recently updated my DPM 2012 Server from UR2 to UR3 and pushed out all the Agent Updates, which appeared to go successfully from the DPM Console perspective. I spot checked a few systems, 1 workstation (WS) and 1 server, everything looked good. A
couple of days after this I noticed 2 of my workstations failed backing up to Tape. I noticed the recovery options available for these WS’s have stopped updating hours after pushing the UR3 Agent update. The 2 WS’s I'm troubleshooting have a little different
scenario. I have 2 other WS’s that were updated in the same manner and are working perfectly.
Both WS cannot connect to the DPM Server and displays this DCOM Error:
"ERROR:ERROR HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component."
The 1st WS DPM Client has a Yelow Sign over-lay and "Administrator has not configured backups." when you hover over it.
The 2nd WS does not the Yellow Sign over-lay.
All the properties of the Local DPM Client Console 'Summary and Protected item'  tabs are not updated on the 1st WS but are on the 2nd WS.
    1st WS process:
The Recovery Tab shows the available recover dates to choice from.
I can expand one of the backup dates, folders and copy a file to this system.
I can view my previous recovery Points from the console dating back to when I updated the Agents.
I’ve validated the DCOM settings on both WS's compared to a WS that is working, they are the same.
I uninstalled the agent manually, then copied and reinstalled the new UR3 Agent Version with the same outcome.
I uninstalled the new version and reinstalled the previous version, same error.
I then proceeded with upgrading UR2 agent version installing the UR3 version over the top, same error.
I logged on to this WS as the Domain Admin, removed and reinstalled the UR3 version, same error.
I removed, applied and then re-added the DPM server to the local WS DPM and DCOM Groups.
I removed, applied and then re-added the WS from the Groups on the DPM Server.
I’m able to see, ping and view other backup folders presented on the DPM server on this WS.
In the DPM Console I am able to connect to this Workstation successfully from the Administrative, Agent Space.
The DPMClientProtectionCurr.errlog file shows this repeatedly:

    I flushed local DNS cache.

    Hi,
I have a Windows 7 x64 machine that exhibits this problem. It seems that it is not caused on the client side but on the server side.
In our case the server logs the following every time the client tries to connect:

Errors on the client side appear the moment the agent is re-added to the DPM server (I use "connect agent" instead of "install agent"). After that moment I get the message "Error connection to the DPM server. Error: a COM-component returned E_FAIL" every time
I open the DPM client. This is mirrored by the Verify error mentioned above on the server side.
To me it seems that parts of the machine config are still in the MSDB after removal (maybe caused by the registry error). If this client is connected again, the orphaned database entries cause the Verify error
If that's true, how could we get rid of those entries? Would it help to rename the client?

  • DPM 2012 R2 (ID 104 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FF)

We are running DPM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012 R2
We have a Protection Group:Servers (9 members) where 5 servers always give the same error message, when we try to run a synchronization job with consistency check. With other 4 server everything is fine. (All 9 servers: Windows Server 2012 R2)
All servers have "Windows Server Backup" feature installed
    Error message:
The replica of Microsoft Hyper-V \Online\S022 Reports on S022 Reports.SynCrust.********.eu is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can
recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.
For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)
    Any help would be appreciated

Just wanted to add some further details to this thread...
    As suggested in
this article, Windows Server Backup has been installed on all 3 cluster nodes. I have also tried disabling/enabling the WinRE agent, as it suggests, with no effect.
The Virtual Machine I am trying to back up is running Windows Server 2008 R2 with the latest updates, and has integration services version 6.3.9600 installed.
    Additional searching led me to
this article, which states "DPM works seamlessly with Hyper-V VSS writer to ensure that consistent versions of virtual machines are captured and protected without affecting virtual machine access." It doesn't clarify if this is the method used
when backing up VMs stored in a CSV, however. Regardless, the Hyper-V VSS writer is not listed when issuing
    vssadmin list providers
I went through the steps outlined in
this article to install the writer, but even after following said steps, the writer still does not appear as registered on the Windows Server 2012 R2 cluster node via the above command.
    I should also mention that
this prereqs article mentions that the Hyper-V role should be installed on the DPM server. The hardware I'm using has an old AMD Sempron 3400+ CPU, so I'm unable to install this role on the DPM. The article states "DPM protects Hyper-V virtual
machines even without the role, but you cannot perform item-level recovery (ILR) unless the role is installed.", so it's doubtful that lack of the role would cause this issue; MindaugasKa, is the Hyper-V role installed on your DPM?
Despite the effort of upgrading my storage server to Windows Storage Server Standard 2012 R2, my cluster nodes to Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, and my DPM to 2012 R2, the
    nightmare continues...

  • Restore from DPM 2010 backup in DPM 2012

    Hi,
I am planning to move from current DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 R2.
In-place upgrade to DPM2012 does not seem to be possible due to upgrade errors so I will have to wipe off the physical server and install DPM2012 from scratch. I use virtual tape drive (firestreamer) and backup to disk for long term protection.
The problem is how will I read my existing DPM2010 backups in DPM2012.
Is there a way to attach old virtual tapes  and be able to restore data from it?
    Thanks for all your feedback.
    Tech Farmer

    Hi Eugene,
    Thanks for your reply.
Your solution will work for inplace upgrade. My scenario is building DPM2012r2 from scratch., which means I will not be restoring DPM2010 DB. Due to this, DPM will have no record of the tape catalog/contents.
Firestreamer will be able to mount the vTape but not identify whats in the vTape.
With this in mind, I trying to figure out if there is a way to read the old virtual tapes (files) in the new DPM2012r2.

OK I bit the bullet and contacted support on this one.
There is a known issue with MDS 2012 and business rules with a combination of "must be unique" attributes. If you do not list the attributes in the same order that they were created you will get the generic error I cited. At first they told me it must be
in the same order the attributes are in and that worked on one entity but not the other. The difference was that in the second entity I previously rearranged the attributes in question. Once I changed the order in the business rule to reflect the *original*
order it worked like a champ.
Hopefully this helps save someone some time and money.
