Dreaded 10.3.9 update

I copied my 10.3.5 disc to another disc and installed. Took 2-5 minutes. I was offline so i used my Windows XP computer and downloaded 10.3.9 update. I restarted and waited 30 mins and didn't boot. I went into Verbose mode and it is stuck at a part that has something to do with the MAC Framework. it said 2289 of 3532 buffers. I was worried so I went back to 10.5 and all was good. Should I keep with 10.3.5 and just use the software compatible with 10.3.5 or keep trying or even go back to 10.5?
PLEASE HELP

Hello Ballymae,
It's always best to start your own topic to get the best and least confusing help for you. Go back to the topics list and look for the "Post A New Topic" link just above the topics list and to the left.
That said, when you do repost your question, make sure to include as much information as possible. Such as, you did not state what OS version you were updating from? You cannot upgrade from an earlier OS version such as 10.2.x to a version of 10.3.x without using retail install disks. If you are having this problem just updating from an earlier version of 10.3, let us know which version and was it a "Combo" version of 10.3.9? Was it a "Client" or "Server" version.
Information like that will be very useful to those trying to help you. Please start a new topic whichever the case so that you will receive the best help.

  • Old update to fix problem?

I've been having the same problem everyone else seems to be having with the ipod not being recognized by itunes. I searched online and found a link from apple.com that allowed the download of the ipod update from 11-17-2005. I'm at work right now so I can't download it, but I'm wondering if anyone has any idea if it would work to download this previous update and try to install that on my ipod that currently has the dreaded 1-16-2006 update on it. Is it even possible to revert back to a previous update like this, and also is this update even a working one because before downloading the 1-16-2006, I hadn't updated the ipod software since purchasing my ipod in late 2004. I'm also not sure if this will cause any more damage to the ipod (such as erase all my music, most of which I don't have backed up). Hopefully someone (preferably apple because they are really dropping the ball here) will be able to solve this problem soon. Thanks.
    Here's that link...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipodupdater20051117.html

Its a challenge and takes patience, but I have managed to install older firmware revisions to my Ipod. I've done it several times with different revisions. Unfortunately, it does not fix these problems.
So I conclude that either 1) the older updates just appear to install but the ipod is actually still running the 2006-1-10 update or 2) the 2006-1-10 update has changed some state that is not corrected by reinstalling an older revision.

  • Fix for 10.5.6 and coreservicesd crashing after update

Both MBP C2D2006 and MacBook Air early 2008 worked fine with the 10.5.6 update so I decided to try it on my PPC. Perfectly happy 10.5.5 PowerMac G5 then the dreaded 10.5.6 update dec 27. Would have thought everything was sorted out. I go to software update and installed it. Everything looked fine until I logged in... nothing responded, I thought my account was hosed so I tried another, it worked for a little while. I kept trying to see what can fix it so I download the combo updater, after reading it can help. After successful combo updater, same thing. I look around and all I can do is ssh in after its booted. It turns out coreservicesd is responsible. I try a couple of things I found here in the discussions none worked. Just for the **** of it I completely removed /Library/Caches and boom its perfectly normal again. Thank god for that I would hate to restore my from a backup and start again.

Thank you so much for this post. I was having this exact issue: 10.5.6 update, coreservicesd crashing (because it was saying it was version 0). I tried the combo update because that has helped stuff in the past, with no luck. Again thank you, I couldn't find any other info out there and I really did not want to reinstall.

  • Helix Win 8.1 update horrors

So, trying to update my Helix to 8.1...   It is been just completely traumatic in so many ways (dramatic flair intentional)
The boatload of windows updates required before you can download the main 8.1 update from the store has failed over a dozen times.  I got the dreaded "Failure configuring Windows updates. Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer" numerous times.  Had to do many hard resets with my trusty paper clip, then do a recovery from the recovery partition.
I had to repair Windows update several times.  I had to manually select and install a dozen or so of the "Critical Updates" from Windows update and do that around 20 times until I got most of the updates installed without a failure.
I've probably rebooted over 100 times, and burnt a solid 2 days trying to get this thing to work.  I tried updating just about everything but it just continues to be nearly impossible to complete this update.
My network adapter stops working randomly, and disconnects me from the download, etc, etc, etc
We have about 7 Thinkpads of all sorts in our family, as well as Lenovo tablets and I have NEVER had so much trouble getting any Lenovo product to work correctly.
Still not sure I can successfully get Windows 8.1 to complete

I'm going to have to agree with Wolfindersteppe, this sounds more like a Windows issue. I recently reinstalled my custom built desktop and experienced many of the problems you described. However, I ran out of time and I had to let it sit for a couple days and all by itself it updated everything to Windows 8.1/8.1.1. My guess is that 8.1 was delivered via Windows Update, which is a first for me. If you can, let the Helix sit for a couple days and let Windows automatically install the updates. Not sure if that will work in your case, but I was pleasantly suprised. Apparently it doesnt like to be micro-managed

  • IOS5 update - anyone else stuck at 'restoring iPhone apps'?

Got past the dreaded 3200 error when updating and everything restored to the phone.  The sync finished but my iTunes has a pop-up box that says 'Restoring iPhone Apps' and a 'STOP' button.  and just keeps churning and churning.  Anyone else stuck in this mode?  Not sure if I'm supposed to wait forever for this thing to go away?
I tried hitting the Stop button but nothing happens.
Some apps transferred to the phone, some didn't.
What to do now???  Any suggestions??
    Thanks!

I'm sorry I'm no help but just to say I'm in the same boat. I went through the on-screen instructions on my iPhone and got the home screen but I can't open any of my apps.
Went back to iTunes to see this window still open..
It's been like it for half an hour, but oh! as I was typing my iTunes pinged. It's just finished and I can confirm that my apps are opening and working correctly.
I guess it depends on the speed of the computer your using, but it will finish eventually!

  • Updates failing to install

I have 7 VM's running on Hyper-V and all of them fail to install updates, all running Server 2012's. Updates seem to be installing fine, until the reboot and the dreaded "Failed to install updates - Reverting" screen. I've tried the DISM commands
with no luck. I did not try installing these updates individually yet, should I?
    Thanks for any input.

    Hi,
Thanks for your feedback and glad to hear that the issue was solved.

  • Flash CS5.5 is Irritating me

There was a day when I looked forward to new releases from Adobe. Now I tend to dread every new release, and unfortunately Flash CS5.5 is giving me plenty of headaches so far. Why change what isn't broken!!?? It drives me crazy when shortcuts are changed, and when the workflow changes. I'm all about new features, but please don't mess with what's already in place...or at least only mess with it when you have an undoubtedly better solution..arr! Instead of a partner in my work and business, Adobe begins to feel like a dreaded enemy when program updates get in the way of my workflow, instead of contributing to it.
Anyway...sorry had to get the rant out....the thing I am hung up on right now is the publlish settings dialogue which is now totally different...
I can't seem to figure out how to revert to default file names for the export. In previous versions of Flash, there was a button that said "Use default file names," now that button is gone in place of a convoluted publish settings dialogue.
Anyone know how to return to default file names? The only way I can figure out how to do it right now is retyping the original filenames manually...not very useful..
    Thanks!!
    Elliott

I have to agree that Adobe, with each new release, break their products instead of improving them. Old bugs don't get fixed, new ones appear. For example, In Flash CS5.5 when switching to Russian keyboard layout (input source), all the letter-based keyboard shortcuts just stop working. In Photoshop 12.1, when changing fullscreen modes or hiding palettes by pressing Tab, all keyboard shortcuts stop working oftenly. Alt/cmd-tabbing from and to Photoshop several times makes them work again. But sometimes it doesn't and you have to change instruments or press Esc, or just roll your face over the keyboard in order for them to work again.
Also, the inconsistency and total randomness of keyboard shortcuts throughout the whole CS suite just drives me nuts. Switching between documents: in some apps it's Cmd-~, in some -- it's Ctrl-Tab. Why can't you gather all the division managers together and agree on one single solution?
I also can't copy-paste paths from Photoshop into Flash, so I have to copy-paste them in Illustrator first, and then copy-paste them from Illustrator to Flash.
And there are many more major bugs/annoyances, which thankfully I can't remember right now.
My Adobe expert certificate feels like something dirty and disgusting, more and more each year. Like I sold my soul to the devil, or something.

  • IPhoto/Photoshop problem

I recently had to do an archive and install to get away from the dreaded 10.4.11 update and I now have a problem and I don't know whether it's with iPhoto, Photoshop or the OS. I have my iPhoto set to open in Photoshop CS and prior to the update it all worked fine. Now when I double-click on a photo it starts up Photoshop but doesn't load the file! I've tinkered with preferences in PS and iPhoto but to no avail. Anybody any ideas?

    You need to re-install Photoshop.
When you did the A+I install, a part of Photoshop that's in the old System Folder got left behind. This is the bit that deals with the Applescripts that pass the pics to and from from iPhoto to Photoshop.

  • DVD R Write Speed and Media

I recently replaced my superdrive (I think due to the dreaded superdrive 2.1 update) with a Mashita DVD-R UJ-857E model. I bought some 16x DVD+R media to burn a project I am working on, and reading the package, it warns against using the discs in a drive with max write speed of 8x or less. Does anyone know if these discs will work in my drive, or should I return them for 8x media? I can't seem to find the max speed for this drive anywhere!
    Thanks

Here are the current specs so yours is not likely to be any better. I use an external 16X burner due to these loping speeds.
    8x slot-loading SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    Maximum write: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R; 4x DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, DVD+RW; 24x CD-R; 10x CD-RW
    Maximum read: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-ROM; 6x DVD-ROM (double layer DVD-9), DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, DVD+RW; 24x CD

  • A safe way to upgrade to 10.5.7

This is an update of my earlier post at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1829014
Before you start you should note that Apple advise backing up before updating. Your views on this will probably depend upon when you last backed up and how inconvenient it will be if you lose everything. Some third party disks have not been accessible after updating. This could be particularly inconvenient if you have put critical items such as Home folders or your only backup onto them.
1 - If you normally have Software Update running and now have OS X 10.5.6. Do NOT allow Software Update to upgrade to 10.5.7 as there is a mixed history of various difficulties described in other threads here. Download the 442 MB dmg updater from:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7Update
Follow the instructions but note that it will require further disk space to expand into.
2 - If you have OS X 10.5 but it is not up to date. Download the 729 MB dmg Combo updater from:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
3 - If you have doubts about any previous 'Software Update' attempts I advise following the instructions in one of the above - ie run the updater over the top of the already installed OS.
I am not sure why the incidence of defective or partial updates appears to have increased. Some say it could be excessive load on Apple servers. I have experienced more difficulty with 8 Mb home networks than with 100 Mb university networks. In the past I have been happy to let Software Update do everything but more recently I have opted to download standalone installers for the major updates so that I can see them verified prior to updating.
I have no plans to mark this topic as 'answered' but would prefer comments to be restricted to improvements or disadvantages of these methods.

I am very new to the "Mac" world, I bought my computer in Dec.'07 and have since been faithfully updating with Auto Update from 10.x.x to 10.5.7. I have never run any disk repairs, utilities, repair permissions, clones, backups, and in doing the update to 10.5.7 the My Book 1TB usb drive for Time Machine was left connected.
Upon reading all the post of trouble in this forum I am left confused about what to do in the future with Auto Updates as I have no issues to report and my computer seems to running fine.
So after everyone instilling dread and fear of updating, what advise would you guys pass on to me now?
This is the first Time Machine Buddy info after updating to 10.5.7

  • TS3694 Swapped phone with wife had "searching" error then get 1669 on restore.

Bought wife a 5S for Xmas - She took backup to itunes of old 5 & restored to 5S then swapped sim from 5 to 5S - was working fine for about a week now phone sits at "Searching" and wont make/take calls.
I put new sim into her old phone, restored my last backup (of my iphone 4) onto it and it was fine until the same day her phone stopped working now I get "searching".
So I performed a factory reset & now get the dreaded 1669 error on updating firmware and phone is stuck in reset loop.
So I put sim back into 4 and it works fine.
Only possible problem is we both forgot to delete the phones from icloud "find my phone" when we swapped sims - which I've now done on the 4 but obviously she can't on the 5 as its stuck.
So is this a IOS/icloud find my phone security bug or are both phones broken?
BTW both phones worked fine until 02-JAN-2014.

    No joy...
I had already tried "recovery mode" restore to get iphone 5 working, just get 1669 after "updating firmware" status message (with progress bar 3/4 across).
Tried DFU method 1 at work this afternoon and get same message "1669" but that was using iTunes V 11.1.3.8
Due to work's Internet proxy I can't test method 2 until I get home as I can't download any software at work.
Last night we both logged into iCloud and deleted all the phones stored in there (as wife's phone wouldn't let her de-register on the 5S even though she had never registered it in the first place).
This has sorted the problem I had on the 4 where I couldn't turn off "find my phone" - I can now register & de-register the iphone 4 from the phone.
The wife can also register & de-register the 5S from the phone too now but it still wont make any calls.
Going to the local apple store tonight to see if we can get any help.
This smacks of an IOS 7.0.4 + a "find-my-phone" authorisation issue which blocked my initial restore thinking the phone was owned by someone else and leaving it in an unusable state.
    I'll post an update later.

  • I'm trying to download some purchased TV shows to my iPad Air.  I keep getting the dreaded Download Error Tap to Retry Message.  I've signed out of iTunes and back in.  I've updated my software.  I have plenty of room for them on the Air.  Help?

I'm trying to download some purchased TV shows to my iPad Air.  I keep getting the dreaded Download Error Tap to Retry Message.  I've signed out of iTunes and back in.  I've updated my software.  I have plenty of room for them on the Air.  We are taking a long flight this week, and I wanted to have something new to watch.  I've read through lots of threads on this but I can't seem to find a good solution that I haven't tried.
If I can get them to download them on my iMac computer, can I then transfer them to my iPad?  How is this done?  (Please pardon an older lady's ignorance, and thank you for any assistance!)

  • The dreaded "Proapps" codec update death...with a twist!  HELP!!!!!

Please help.  I am at the end of my rope with this.
I recently updated my ios to 10.6.8 and from what I remember, it made me updated Quicktime and Itunes (?) . . . this was all just so I could put music on my stupid Iphone.
Then I went into FCP7 today (regular 7...i still can't find a link to download 7.0.3) and I could *VIEW* the XF files in log and transfer (Canon XF100) but none of them would 'log and transfer' into .AVI files.  Gave me the red
Frustrated, I began to re-download everything.  Dug through info.   The XF utility, etc.  I believe I downloaded this dreaded program you all speak of in the process.
THEN, *NOTHING* would work.  I could put the XF files into log and transfer, but theyd only play for 2 seconds, and theyd be black.
Then I found this thread.  I downloaded the HDV file you all speak of, and it did nothing.
HOWEVER, the "PerianXDcam" file *DOES* work!  I was elated, but then, to my dismay, FCP7 keeps crashing.  I can encode about 6 seconds of videos, but when I try to move to something else, or play them in 'log and transfer', crash crash crash.  This never happened before.
ALL I HAVE in the library folder of Quicktime is now this "persianxdcam" from the other thread .... (i don't even think the XF100's are XD format?)
I don't have my original disc, and I don't have my original FCP7 disk!
Am I screwed?  Why is it crashing so much?
Could someone ZIP me their Library folder?
    This is my info.
FCP7 (there are no .x.x after it)
    Canon XF100 (w/ XF100 FCP plugin)
    ios 10.6.8
HELP!!!!!! I'm gonna beat up a wall!  I need to get to work.

    Here's the link for 7.0.3.

Not sure if it will help.

  • Just update Yosemite to 10.2.2 and now LR5 has that dreaded spinning wheel. Takes about 30 seconds for each click of Wacom pen or mouse. Adobe Bridge will not open. Worked fine prior to this update. have the latest LR5 installed and Bridge CC

Is there some fix for this? this also affects my LR4. PS CC works fine and all other apps.

It's usually necessary to clean up whats left behind after updating OSX.
Try trashing the prefs. Start by quitting Lightroom 5.
Launch Finder and click the Go menu whilst holding down the Option (alt) key. Then go to Library >> Preferences and clear everything relating to LR5 which usually means deleting the following files:
    com.adobe.Lightroom5.plist
    com.adobe.Lightroom5LSSharedFileList.plist
    Then re-launch Lightroom.
Also look for the corresponding files for LR4 and Bridge plist files.

  • Dreaded three beeps of RAM death related to OSX 10.8.3 update?

I installed the 10.8.3 update soon after it became available using the OSX software updater. About a week later, when attempting to wake my iMac from sleep, it gave me a black screen and the three repeating beeps for the first time ever. It restarted upon a hard restart, and I then did a bit of research online to find out the 3 beeps meant a possible RAM issue. As I had added 8 GB of Kingston Mac RAM (2x4GB of this) to my iMac about a year ago, I then ran Apple hardware test (looped and extended) overnight, but it came up with no problems. I then ran Rember over several loops too, but that came up with nothing as well.
So I opened up my iMac and switched around the memory, mindful of the pairing. I did a reformat and reinstall of everything as well, updating again to 10.8.3 using OSX software update. But yesterday, about 2 days after the reformat, I again got the three beeps when waking from sleep.
Could these three repeating beeps be related to 10.8.3? Up until 10.8.2 I didn't have any such issues. Any ideas?
I have just done another reformat, but installed 10.8.3 using the combo updater rather than using OSX software update. Will keep you updated if this solves the issue. If not, I will reformat and go back to 10.8.2. Hopefully that works!

UPDATE (and tentative resolution to my issue): So the 10.8.3 combo updater I installed still gave the 3 beeps issue, as did the revert to 10.8.2. After all that, I figured it wasn't the OS or software, so I played around with the RAM -  I tried out the pairs of RAM in turn, and well, after some relatively extensive testing, I didn't get any beeps when the pairs were installed on their own. So it turns out that the RAM pairs are actually fine, but the 4 GB of factory installed RAM wasn't playing nice with the 8 GB of Kingston RAM. Strange, coz for a year they worked fine together (which is why I didn't initially suspect a RAM compatibility issue). Anyway, so now I just kept the 8 GB of Kingston Mac RAM installed in my iMac, and removed the factory installed RAM, and so far so good.
