Drop Cap problem

When text in TextFrame is aligned to baseline and scaled - Drop Cap becomes too large and hangs over text. Is it an InDesign bug or I've missed something?
Here is an example of such behaviour: scale is 200%, drop cap size is 8 lines. I'm using InDesign CS5.5.

One can use this script to produce document with this bug (or behaviour?):
#target indesign
function main() {
    //create new document
    var document = app.documents.add();
    document.viewPreferences.horizontalMeasurementUnits = MeasurementUnits.pixels;    // horizontal ruler - in pixels
    document.viewPreferences.verticalMeasurementUnits = MeasurementUnits.pixels;    // vertical ruler - in pixels
    document.viewPreferences.textSizeMeasurementUnits = MeasurementUnits.pixels;    // text size - in pixels
    document.gridPreferences.baselineStart = 36;        //baseline start for 36 pixels
    document.gridPreferences.baselineDivision = 36;    //baseline every 36 pixels
    var page = document.pages.add(); //create new page
    var frame = page.textFrames.add(); //create new textframe with default font settings (Minion Pro Regular, 12px)
    frame.geometricBounds = [20,20,400,200]; //set bounds to text frame
    var s = "";
    for (var i = 0; i < 100; ++i) {
        s += "text "; //create some long text
    frame.contents = s; //fill frame with text
    frame.texts[0].alignToBaseline = true; //align text to baseline
    frame.texts[0].dropCapCharacters = 1; //add drop cap with 1 character
    frame.texts[0].dropCapLines = 8; //and 8 line height
    frame.absoluteHorizontalScale = 200; //scale the textframe by 200%
    frame.absoluteVerticalScale = 200; //uniformly
main();
I know that redefine scaling to 100% fixes everything, but it is not an option for me (because it affects text reflow, text wrap offset, etc). Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Drop Caps PDF export problem

    When I export the document I'm working on, all of my drop caps change slightly. I've attached an image showing the IND (CS5) layout, and on the right the exported PDF change to the drop caps.
    They have been set up using styles with drop caps that use a character style to style the letter itself.
    I have another document with the same styles used and it exports fine. I've tried exporting with different settings with no luck.
    Anyone ever seen this happen? Any thoughts on the cause?

    Thanks Steve—I think I solved my own question.
    Baseline grid issue, it seems.
    For future reference if this comes up with anybody though:

  • Control space after the Drop Cap

    ID3, XP
    We character style drop caps. When the DC is a single character, we use the tracking in the character style to add space to the right of the dropped character. However, this method cannot be used when it is a two character drop, in this case, chapter numbers are dropped 2 lines. We want to adjust the space between the dropped number and the start of text, and keep that space equal on both lines.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    The first issue is still that humbled wasn't able to add space after the drop caps and maintain alignment of the text. Bottom line is that  his method of using character spacing was a bad hack. I'm pointing out that the alternative solutions he tried (ex. post #4) didn't work because he wasn't using the correct value for the number of drop characters. And per his post #21, he is still assuming that 2 is the correct value to define a double digit drop cap. If he gets past that, solutions to other complications may come easier.<br /><br />In fact, unless he needs some specific sized space HIS WHOLE PROBLEM FROM START TO FINISH could be solved simply by selecting 3 as the number of characters for his drop caps rather than sticking with 2. That would have the effect of including the space after the chapter numbers as part of the drop cap making it larger and adding considerably more space.<br /><br />If he does need more space, then he is going to have to add another character. But that character still has to be included in the DC character count:<br /><br />12<space>Text (3 drop caps)<br />12<hardspace>Text (3 drop caps)<br />12<space><hardspace>Text (4 drop caps)<br /><br />He can even use a tab character for a specific indent if he wants. Just switch a tab for the hardspace above.<br /><br />P.S. The same logic holds true for in single drop caps. If you want extra space after, increase the drop cap count to 2 to include the space after.

  • Getting Rid of Space After Drop Caps?

    Styles are awesome, and using InDesign is a real treat! However, I'm having a rather frustrating problem when exporting to EPUB.
    My Drop Caps span only 2 lines, and they display just fine within InDesign itself. Yet, when exporting to EPUB, there's a large space after the Drop Cap. It;s really ugly and screws up the text flow, of course. How do I eliminate this problem??
    I'm new to InDesign, so a step-by-step would be great! In case it;s needed, here's the style setup for this paragraph:
    1. First two words are small-capped AND bolded
    2. First letter is, additionally, drop-capped (2 lines)
    The styles are applied separately - no nesting. I can use either CS5 or CS5.5, if that makes a difference. If you have any other questions to help me resolve this, please feel free to ask. Thanks!
    Mike

    I do believe I answered my own question. I also had the first line indented 2p0, just like the other normal paragraphs. I set the drop cap to 0p0 - on a lark - and the problem resolved itself. I supposed, with a drop cap, there's really no need to indent, so I won't!
    However, if anyone knows a way to indent the first line 2p0 without the space after a drop cap, that'd be nice to know. otherwise, I'm okay for now. Thanks!

  • Is there a way to create drop caps in iBooks Author?

    Is there a way to create initial drop caps in iBooks Author?

    Great, drop caps work, thanks.
    I wanted to kern them back (I can't help myself) and I found that if I put a space after the box and then kerned the space back, it worked visually. Do you think that will cause issues down the road? It previewed ok.
    Also if I make the boxes too tight, again to make it more typographically pleasing, may I have issues later if people increase or decrease the font size?
    I don't have an iPad yet so I can't check it that way. If something previews, will it run?
    thanks

  • AirTunes with AirportExpress cut or drop out problems - my solution...

    I buyed 2 of the Airport Extreme one month ago (Firmware 6.3, Itunes 7.1.1), never got them working fine, till yesterday...
    I have A Zyxel ADSL WLAN Router Switch. WPA-PSK as I wanted a secure Network. Both of the AX were connected with static IPs. WLAN was always working fine, but I had many cut outs with airtunes. I wanted a solution with lossles streaming audio with the possibility to connect my Receiver digitally. That's why I bought my first Apple hardware, as I was always told, Apple=Plug'n play. Very frustrating!
    I tried other switches, Routers, WLAN adapters and cards, nothing worked. Airfoil does not support multiple speakers yet, so it's useless for me.
    In the FAQ of the Airtunes, Apple mentioned to use lower security, as some Computers probably do not have enough power to stream music flawlessly. But my Computers really do have enough power! I think the AX does not have enough power to do that. So I created another wireless network with one of my AX. I set the security to WEP-40bit key and joined this new Network with my other AX. Not the best solution, as I'm now connected to the Internet or to the AX to use Airtunes. Cables could fix that problem, but then I could use a wired system instead...
    I use Channel 11 for the AX WLAN (the only clean channel in my area), Multicast to 11, only G mode for Wireless and a 5 characters WEP-40 key and no WDS. Seems to work at the moment.
    I hope this will help others with the cut or drop out problem. If you have a working AirTunes system, please post your setup. Mostly I'm interested in a Setup with working WPA...

    Thanks, I hope I can help others with this annoying problem...
    Sorry, I forgot to write about the RF Interference. Belive me, I spent hours and hours searching for a solution in the Internet and every checkbox the Admin utility offered me to try out... I'm working as a system engineer, and supporting computer systems since the early 90ties, so I'd say I have a bit knowledge about all the networking, WLAN, Audio... In school we had the Apple Mac I with the 12" monochrome monitor and appletalk for networking quite funny!
    But back to the RF interference: At the moment I activated it on both AX I own. I have a microwave, wireless phone and I'm living in a Area with many WLAN access points. I can choose between 6 networks!
    I'm the only one with a network higher than channel 6, so this area is clean at least.
    As my AirTunes do work at the moment, I'm not going to try if I could also deactivate it.
    Next step is to try if I can connect the AX Router to the internet. A connection to my ADSL router should do that, but up to now I had very strange behavior when plugging in a ethernet cable to the AX. If this will work, it will be my final solution, at the moment I only see it as a workaround...

  • How do I use a picture as Drop caps?

    I have a picture that I want to place to the left of the paragraph. I want the same function as a Drop cap, ie it should occupy a certain amount of rows, and it should follow the first line in the paragraph.
    Just placing the picture before the first letter and juggle with the Text Wrap settings seems to be impossible. I have to use the Drop cap setting, but then I get other strange behaviors.
    Placing it as a picture alloww me to adjust the Text Wrap and position correctly, but then the image will not follow the Paragraph...
    I hate when I don't understand how I should do things!
    How do I do?

    Text Wrap is the best way to go. But you also want the graphic to move with the text.
    So you need to create an Anchored Object. You can read about the topic in InDesign Help.
    If you tried to cut and paste the graphic into the text, it won't work because it's just creating an inline graphic. You actually want to create the graphic to be anchored in the previous paragraph so you can also have the text wrap. Here are a couple screen captures to help you.
    It's a lot easier to create this in InDesign CS5.5 (you didn't say which version of InDesign you're using) because you can drag from a blue square which appears at the upper right corner to where you'd like to anchor the file. It's a little trickier in earlier versions of InDesign.

  • Drop Cap Issue

    So have a Drop Cap set up as a nested style for an opening chapter for a book. Body style is Sabon and the Drop Cap is Gill Sans and is set up through 1 character. The drop cap is applying the Gill Sans properly to the first letter (which is the Drop Cap), but it's also making the next character Gill Sans as well (not as a drop cap but in its regular size. So for example, the word "All" starts the paragraph, and the A is Gill Sans and a drop Cap, and the first 'l' is Gill Sans and the second "l" Sabon. I've cleared all charcter styles and still the second character won't automatically change to Sabon. I've even tried setting the Nested Style through 1 letter, but that didn't help either.
    Using latest version of CC.

    Why do you use nested style? Use only the proper style in Drop Character section of the nested styles.

  • Drop cap for FIRST paragraph only

    I know how to create a drop cap for a paragraph manually. But I will be filling a textbox from XML, which may contain one or more paragraphs. If I assign a drop cap as part of the paragraph style, every paragraph gets a drop cap, when I only want it on the FIRST paragraph. It seemed liked Nested Styles offered some promise, but that appears to only work with character styles, and drop cap is available only as a paragraph style.
    Is there any solution to this, short of scripting? And if scripting is required, does anyone have any pertinent examples of applying paragraph styles with scripting? I'm a seasoned pro with VB, but I haven't tried VBScript in InDesign yet, and not even sure what the object model looks like.
    Thanks!

    Please forgive my ignorance, but is "next style" some kind of intrinsic functionality (as suggested by the quotes)? If there is some kind of functionality that says apply a variant of style to the first paragraph, and the original (based on) style to the rest, that's what I'm looking for.
    I did arrive at a work-around, using the original style and basing a new style on it (thanks for the tip, I didn't think about that), but it's less elegant than I'd like. What I did is, instead of assigning an XML tag to the entire textbox, I selected the first paragraph and assigned a tag to it; then I selected the remaining paragraph(s) and assigned a different tag. I mapped styles to each tag, with the first having the drop cap. So far, it seems to work--though I've found that with ID and XML, it's best to keep things as simple as possible. ID's implementation of XML can be a little squirrely. This also adds the burden of having the software which generates the XML, determine when the first paragraph ends and the second begins.
    If anyone else out there tries this, please note: ID adds as "Story" tag to the structure. You'll need to add this tag to your XML as well (and remember, tag names are case sensitive).

  • Drop cap in first paragraph only...

    Hi All,
    I've found what looks like the solution to this, but it doesn't work (thereby rendering it a non-solution).
    Anyways, I have created two paragraph styles ("First Paragraph Style" and "Following Paragraph Style"). In "First Paragraph Style" I have set the Drop Cap, and I have set "Next Style" (under "General") to "Following Paragraph Style" (which does not have a Drop Cap setting, or rather the default settings ie. 0 lines, etc.).
    The rub: I apply First Paragraph Style to my text and... all the paragraphs have a drop cap as defined in First Paragraph Style. Major sadness!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot!

    Next style only works automatically when you are typing and hit enter. For placed or pasted text, or previousluy entered text, follow Fred's instuctions.

  • Reverse Drop Cap- what's it called

    InDesign has handy feature for drop caps. But what's it called when the first letter towers above the first line rather than drop to cover 2 or lines? Does InDesign have a function for that in the Paragraph files too?

    "Upcap"? (I never heard it named before.)
    You can use a nested style for that, spanning just one character. I've seen the entire first word in upcaps as well.
    (Afterthougt: although you can use the regular point size to change it, it might work better -- i.e., not messing with line heights -- if you use the Horizontal and Vertical size to make it larger.)

  • Ending drop cap styling after a paragraph return

    I’m working back in the dark ages of CS4 and I’m having an issue with drop caps and my workflow in the office. I have a drop-cap applied to the first paragraph via the Paragraph Style and I have apply next style active. When editors go into the text box and add a new paragraph, mid way through the existing first paragraph, the newly created paragraph had the drop cap applied. How do I get InDesign to deactivate the drop cap command after the first word or first sentence so this will not happen.

    You'll just have to apply a new paragraph style to the new paragraph.
    The Next Style doesn't apply here, because there's text after the cursor
    where you split the paragraph.
    So just apply a new paragraph style that doesn't have a drop cap --
    verty quick if you use a keyboard shortcut for it.

  • Drop Cap distance from text

    Just wondering if there is a way to reduce the amount of space from a text box within another text box. The only way I know how to create a "drop cap" is to insert another text box into the text, but the distance between the text box and the rest of the text seems huge. Can that be reduced? Any ideas? MANY THANKS in advance.
